Please adhere to the following safety warnings and precautions when installing, maintaining, or operating your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSL tumbler:

General Warnings:

• Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate this machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death, and/or property damage.

• If the tumbler does not perform correctly, immediately disconnect electrical service, shut off the gas supply, and contact an authorized service representative. Service and repairs must be performed by authorized service representatives only.

• Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision is necessary when the tumbler is used near children.

• Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

• Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

• Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing by shutting off the appropriate circuit breaker or fuse and turning off the disconnect switch.

• Install lockable doors to prevent public access to the rear of the tumblers.

Operational Precautions:

• Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

• Do not tamper with controls or bypass any safety devices.

• Always follow the fabric care instructions supplied by the garment manufacturer.

• Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

• Do not reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

Fire and Explosion Hazards (DO NOT DRY):

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in, or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents, or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubber-like materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals, or thinner. Articles soiled with vegetable or cooking oil may catch fire by themselves, as these oils may not be fully removed during washing.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

• Do not store or use flammable liquids or spray aerosols near this appliance.

Venting and Airflow:

• The tumbler produces combustible lint and MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS. The area around the dryer must be kept free of lint.

• Do not exhaust tumbler air into a window well, gas vent, chimney, or an enclosed, unventilated area such as an attic, wall, ceiling, or crawl space.

• Solvent gases and vapors from dry cleaning machines create corrosive acids when drawn through the heater. Ensure make-up air is free of these vapors.

The model and serial numbers for your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSL tumbler are located on the nameplate. You can find the nameplate on the rear of the tumbler or underneath the door hinge.

Upon delivery, visually inspect the crate, carton, and parts for any visible shipping damage. If there are signs of possible damage, have the carrier note the condition on the shipping papers before signing the receipt, or inform the carrier as soon as it is discovered. Remove the crate and protective cover, check items against the packing list, and file a written claim with the carrier immediately if any articles are damaged or missing.

IMPORTANT: Remove the shipping tape from the two back draft dampers located in the exhaust thimble.

Floor: The drying tumbler may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Any floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed from under the machine.

Layout: Whenever possible, install the tumbler along an outside wall to keep the exhaust duct length to a minimum and allow for easy access to make-up air. Construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler, as this would prevent an adequate air supply to the combustion chamber.

Venting: For maximum efficiency and minimal lint accumulation, the tumbler’s air must be exhausted outdoors by the shortest possible route. Exhaust ducts must be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, with smooth interior surfaces. Do not use sheet metal screws to join vent sections. Where the duct passes through a combustible wall or ceiling, the opening must be 4 inches (10.2 cm) larger in diameter than the duct, and the duct must be centered in the opening. The space around the duct must be sealed with non-combustible material.

Make-Up Air: A tumbler requires make-up air to replace the air it exhausts. The recommended make-up air opening is 144 square inches (928 sq. cm). At a minimum, there must be at least 1 sq. inch (2.54 cm²) of opening for every 1000 BTU/hr of input rating. If protective louvers are used, they can reduce air movement by approximately 40%, so the opening size must be increased to compensate.

The electrical requirements for the SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSL depend on whether it is a high or low pressure steam model. Always refer to the nameplate on your specific unit for accurate information. Do not use aluminum wire.

Requirements Overview:

Low Pressure Steam Drying Tumblers (240V, 1 Phase, 50 Hz):

WARNING: All electrical connections must be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit before making any connections. Never attempt to connect a live circuit.

Follow these steps to connect electrical service:

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. Each tumbler requires its own circuit breaker.

2. a. Connect the conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

b. Turn the disconnect switch on the tumbler to the “off” position and open the junction box.

c. Insert the conduit-encased leads through a knockout hole in the junction box.

d. Connect the wire leads to the disconnect switch. For 1 Phase Units, connect one lead to the top left and the other to the top right connection point. For 3 Phase Units, connect one lead to each connection point.

e. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

3. For three-phase units only, check the electrical service phase sequence:

a. Energize the electrical service and momentarily start the tumbler. Check the direction of cylinder rotation. If the cylinder rotates clockwise (when viewed from the front), the phase sequence is correct.

b. If the cylinder rotates counterclockwise, disconnect the power and reverse any two leads at the connections.

4. Close the junction box cover and turn the disconnect switch to the “on” position.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS: The tumbler must be grounded. It must be connected to a grounded metal, permanent wiring system, or an equipment grounding conductor must be run with the circuit conductors and connected to the PE Busbar. Improper connection can result in a risk of electric shock.

Positioning:

The tumbler can be removed from its shipping skid before or after moving it to the installation location. To remove it from the skid, unscrew the four shipping capscrews at each corner. You may need to remove the lint panel door to access the two front capscrews.

NOTE: Do not discard these four capscrews, as they are the leveling legs.

Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible, ensuring all four legs rest firmly on the floor so the weight is evenly distributed and the tumbler does not rock.

Leveling:

The tumbler should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear and side to side. To check the front-to-rear level, rotate the cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that bottom rib. To check the side-to-side level, place a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

The steam service requirements for your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSL depend on the model:

• High pressure machines: Require a constant 80 to 100 psig (5.62 to 7.03 kg/sq. cm) steam service.

• Low pressure machines: Require a constant 10 to 15 psig (0.70 to 1.05 kg/sq. cm) steam service.

WARNING: The flexible steam hoses connecting the solenoid steam valve to the coil inlets must have a 125 psig (8.79 kg/sq. cm) working pressure. A shut-off gate valve must be installed upstream from the solenoid steam valve. The steam solenoid valve must be supported to minimize load on the coil inlet connections.

The flexible steam hoses for the coil outlet connections and steam traps must also have a minimum 125 psig working pressure. A shutoff gate valve must be installed downstream from each steam trap. Each steam trap must be supported to minimize load on the coil outlet connection.

Steam Inlet Connections:

1. Install a manual shut-off gate valve in the condensate return line after the steam trap for each coil.

2. Connect the steam solenoid valve to the related steam coil inlet connection using nipples, flex hoses, unions, a tee, and a pressure relief valve.

3. Install a gate shut-off valve in the steam supply line and connect it to the solenoid steam valve inlet.

Condensate Return Connections:

1. Connect a flexible hose to each steam coil outlet.

2. Install a strainer to the end of each flexible hose.

3. Install a steam trap to each strainer. IMPORTANT: The steam trap must be installed a minimum of 10 inches (25.4 cm) below the steam coil outlet connections.

4. Install a gate shut-off valve to each steam trap.

5. Connect to the condensate return lines.

Steam Trap Sizing:

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension and adjust if necessary (refer to Adjustment Section).

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. For gas models only, turn on the gas supply at the manual shut-off valve. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

5. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If it doesn’t stop, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

6. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

7. For gas models, start the tumbler and check the burner flame, adjusting the gas inlet shutter if necessary.

8. Check the air flow switch operation by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 1-1/2″ (3.81 cm). Adjust if necessary.

9. Turn off the tumbler.

10. Check the air flow switch operation again by opening the lint panel with a full load. The heating system should shut off when the panel is opened approximately 6″ (15.24 cm).

Manual Dual Timer Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH and set the drying and cool down selectors to their maximum settings.

2. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start, the heat system will turn on, the drying indicator will light, and the drying selector will rotate counterclockwise.

3. When the drying selector reaches zero (0), the heat system will shut off, the drying indicator will turn off, the cooling indicator will light, and the cooling selector will rotate counterclockwise.

4. When the cooling selector reaches zero (0), the motor will stop, and the cooling indicator will turn off, indicating the cycle is finished.

Coin Operated Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2 1/2 minute cool down cycle will start.

5. When the metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the cycle is finished.

Electronic Control Tumbler:

This model comes equipped with an Electronic Control that provides a variety of programming options. To learn how to use the Electronic Control, consult the supplemental manual.

NOTICE: Both air inlet shutters on the burner must be adjusted for proper combustion and maximum efficiency. Before adjusting, ensure all lint is removed from the lint compartment and screen.

1. Unlock and open the access door.

2. Start the tumbler and check the flame pattern. A correct air and gas mixture is indicated if the flame is primarily blue, has small yellow tips, and bends to the right of the heater section. Too little air is indicated if the flame is yellow, lazy, and smokey.

3. To adjust, loosen the air inlet shutter adjusting screw.

4. Open or close the air shutter as needed to obtain the proper flame intensity.

5. After adjusting, tighten the air shutter adjusting screw securely. You may need to temporarily remove the control panel to access the screws.

6. If the shutter is adjusted correctly but the flame is straight up, it indicates insufficient primary air is flowing through the tumbler. If the flame flares to the right and left, it indicates no air is flowing through the tumbler.

NOTICE: The control panel must be in place and the access door closed before adjusting the air flow switch. Steam models do not have an air flow switch.

WARNING: Air flow switch operation can be affected by a clogged lint screen, lack of make-up air, or obstructions in the exhaust ducts. Check and correct these conditions before adjusting the switch.

The switch should be adjusted so that air flow forces the disc away from the cabinet when the lint panel is opened 6 inches (15.24 cm) with a full load. To adjust:

1. Load the tumbler.

2. Start the tumbler. Open the lint panel 6 inches (15.24 cm). The airflow disc should move away from the cabinet, opening the switch contacts and shutting off the heat system. This indicates proper adjustment.

3. If the switch does not open as described, it needs to be MORE sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight toward the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight toward the disc until it operates correctly.

4. If the switch opens BEFORE the lint panel is opened 6 inches, it needs to be LESS sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight away from the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight away from the disc until it operates correctly.

Loading Door Switch Adjustment:

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler when the door is opened. To adjust it:

1. Start the tumbler.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3 inches (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4 inch (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the door. The switch should close with an audible “click” when the door is closed 3 inches (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4 inch (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct point:

a. Close the loading door completely.

b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops.

c. Tighten the lower screw on the switch coupler.

d. Return to step 1 to verify the adjustment.

Cylinder Door Strike Adjustment:

The door strike must have enough tension to hold the door closed against the force of the tumbling load. Proper adjustment is when 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) of pull is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut on the door strike, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Retighten the jamnut when finished.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation. The guard MUST be re-installed on the rear of the tumbler after the adjustment is made.

Proper tension is achieved when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) with light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and motor pulley. The upper Poly V-belt is self-adjusting and requires no adjustment.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt that holds the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt:

a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen the V-belt:

a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint from the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment can be drawn back onto the screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean the lint from the lint screen. If the screen is torn, replace it immediately, as a torn screen allows lint to flow into the ductwork system, restricting air circulation.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps will allow lint to flow into the ductwork.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the probe can cause the tumbler to overheat.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

1. Perform the daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

4. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

5. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

6. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

7. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

8. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

9. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

Quarterly Maintenance:

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Clean accumulated lint and other debris from the front and back motor air vents.

5. For gas models, shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

6. Remove the screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

7. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension, referring to the Adjustments section.

8. Reinstall the rear drive guard.

9. Energize the electrical circuit by turning on the disconnect switch.

10. For gas models, turn on the gas supply. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

Biannual Maintenance:

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch.

2. Perform daily, monthly, and quarterly cleaning and inspections.

3. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

4. For gas models, shut off the gas supply (“OFF” position).

5. Unlock and open the service panel and inspect gas connections for evidence of leakage or loose connections. NOTE: Spraying a mild solution of soap and water on joints will cause bubbles to appear on any leaking connections.

6. Close and securely lock the service panel.

7. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose connections.

8. Close the electrical junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit.

9. For gas models, turn on the gas supply (“ON” position).

Quarterly Maintenance

Biannual Maintenance

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the gas supply external to the machine.

4. Turn off the manual gas shut-off valve on the machine.

5. Turn off the steam supply external to the machine.

6. Remove all electric, gas, and steam connections.
