Please observe the following critical warnings when using your SPEED QUEEN JC50CG drying tumbler:

FAILURE TO INSTALL, MAINTAIN, AND/OR OPERATE THIS MACHINE ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURER’S INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN CONDITIONS WHICH CAN PRODUCE SERIOUS INJURY, DEATH AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury or death to persons:

• Do not operate the tumbler if it does not perform according to these instructions. Immediately disconnect electrical service, shut off gas supply and contact an authorized service representative. Service and repairs are to be performed by authorized service representatives only.

• Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

• DO NOT tamper with controls.

• DO NOT bypass any safety devices.

• Always follow the fabric care instructions supplied by the garment manufacturer.

• Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

• DO NOT reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

To avoid creating any flammable vapors which may explode, ignite or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials in your SPEED QUEEN JC50CG:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals or thinner.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

• DO NOT put articles soiled with vegetable or cooking oil in the dryer as these oils may not be removed during washing. Due to the remaining oil, the fabric may catch on fire by itself.

To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, serious injury or death to persons when using your SPEED QUEEN JC50CG, follow these basic precautions:

1. Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision of children is necessary when the tumbler is used near children. This is a safety rule for all appliances.

2. Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

3. Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

4. Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate this machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death and/or property damage.

5. Run the tumbler with a load before putting it into service.

6. Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing. Disconnect power by shutting off the appropriate circuit breaker or fuse and by turning off the disconnect switch located on the rear of the tumbler.

7. If equipped with an emergency stop button, its activation stops all machine control circuit functions but does not remove all electrical power from the machine.

The following warning labels will be found on the SPEED QUEEN JC50CG drying tumbler:

• A clothes dryer produces combustible lint. TUMBLER MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

• Do not touch rotating parts.

• Do not touch surface until it has cooled.

• WARNING!

• Do not operate without guards in place.

• Disconnect electrical power before servicing.

• To reduce risk of accumulating unsafe concentrations of combustion gases, tumbler MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

When writing for information on your SPEED QUEEN JC50CG, be sure to mention the model and serial numbers. The model and serial numbers will be found on the nameplate as shown on the rear of the tumbler or underneath the door hinge.

The following are the specifications for the 50 Pound (22 kg) Gas Tumbler models, including the SPEED QUEEN JC50CG.

REVERSING MOTOR SIZES (50 LB. MODELS)

Upon delivery, visually inspect the crate, carton, and parts for any visible shipping damage. If there are signs of damage, have the carrier note the condition on shipping papers before signing, or advise the carrier as soon as it is discovered. A written claim should be filed immediately if articles are damaged or missing.

Remove the crate and protective cover and check items against the packing list.

IMPORTANT: Remove shipping tape from the two back draft dampers located in the exhaust thimble.

Floor: The drying tumbler may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed.

Layout: Whenever possible, the tumbler should be installed along an outside wall where duct length can be kept to a minimum, and make-up air can be easily accessed. Construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler, as this would prevent an adequate air supply to the combustion chamber.

Venting: For maximum efficiency and minimum lint accumulation, tumbler air must be exhausted to the outdoors by the shortest possible route.

Make-Up Air: A tumbler is a forced air exhaust and requires provisions for make-up air to replace the air exhausted by the tumbler. The recommended make-up air opening is 144 square inches (928 sq. cm). At a minimum, the tumbler must have at least 1 sq. inch (2.54 cm²) of opening for every 1000 BTU/hr of input rating for proper combustion.

Properly sized exhaust ducts are essential for proper operation. All elbows should be sweep type. Exhaust ducts shall be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, equivalent in strength and corrosion resistance to galvanized sheet steel not less than 0.0195 inches (0.495 mm) thick.

• Individual Venting: It is preferred to exhaust tumblers individually to the outdoors. The maximum allowable length of venting is 14 feet (4.3 m) and two 90° elbows or equivalent. If the required duct length exceeds this, the duct diameter must be increased.

• Collector Venting: A main collector duct may be used if sized properly. The collector duct must be tapered, and individual tumbler ducts must enter the collector duct at a 45° angle in the direction of air flow. Never connect a tumbler duct at a 90° angle to the collector duct.

• Airflow: With the tumbler in operation, airflow at any point in the duct must be at least 1200 feet (366 m) per minute to ensure that lint remains airborne.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and accumulation of combustible gases, DO NOT exhaust tumbler air into a window well, gas vent, chimney or enclosed, unventilated area such as an attic wall, ceiling, crawl space under a building, or concealed space of a building.

NOTE: Do not install wire mesh or screen in the exhaust opening as lint will build up and prevent proper discharge of air.

WARNING: All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit before making any connections. Never attempt to connect a live circuit.

Use the following steps to connect electrical service to the SPEED QUEEN JC50CG:

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. A separate circuit breaker should be provided for each tumbler.

2. a. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

b. Turn “off” the disconnect switch on the tumbler and open the junction box.

c. Insert conduit-encased leads through one of the knockout holes in the junction box.

d. Connect wire leads to the disconnect switch.

e. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

3. For three-phase units only, check the electrical service phase sequence:

a. Energize electrical service and momentarily start the tumbler. Check the direction of the cylinder rotation. If the cylinder rotates clockwise (viewed from the front), the phase sequence is correct. If it rotates counterclockwise, proceed with step “b”.

b. Disconnect and reverse any two leads at the connections.

4. Close the junction box cover and turn “on” the disconnect switch.

Positioning:

The SPEED QUEEN JC50CG may be removed from its shipping skid before or after moving to its installation location. To remove from the skid, unscrew the four shipping capscrews (one at each corner). The lint panel door will have to be removed to access two front capscrews. NOTE: Do not throw these four capscrews away; they are the leveling legs.

Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible. All four legs must rest firmly on the floor so the weight is evenly distributed and the tumbler does not rock.

Leveling:

The tumbler should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear, and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from side to side. Check the front-to-rear level by rotating the cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that bottom rib. The side-to-side level should be checked by placing a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

Before connecting, make certain the gas service is the same as specified on the nameplate. If it is not the same, DO NOT CONNECT THE GAS LINE. The gas burner orifice and gas valve will need to be converted first by authorized personnel.

• Natural Gas (NG): Must be supplied at 6-1/2 ± 1-1/2 inch water column pressure (1.62 ± .37 kPa).

• Liquefied Petroleum (LP) Gas: Must be supplied at 11 ± .3 inch water column pressure (2.74 ± .07 kPa).

Purge air and sediment from the gas service line before connecting it loosely to the tumbler. Purge the remaining air until the odor of gas is detected, then tighten the connection. Use pipe compound resistant to LP gas on all pipe threads.

WARNING: Check all pipe connections, internal and external, for gas leaks using a soapy solution. To reduce the risk of explosion or fire, DO NOT USE AN OPEN FLAME TO CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS! Gas connections should be checked annually for leakage.

WARNING: The tumbler and its individual shut-off valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing of that system at test pressures in excess of 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa). The tumbler must be isolated by closing its manual shut-off valve during pressure testing at or below 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa).

Lighting the System:

1. Turn the machine disconnect switch, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position.

2. Turn the gas shut-off valve, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position (gas valve handle should be parallel with the gas line).

3. Start the tumbler, following its operating instructions.

NOTE: The ignition control circuitry will first verify the airflow switch is open. Once the cylinder motor starts, the airflow switch will close. The tumbler will purge air for 18 seconds. Ignition will then start with a three-second release of gas and sparking of the ignitor. If ignition does not occur, the control will “lockout,” closing the gas valve and illuminating a red button on the ignition control. To reset, open the access door, press the red button on the ignition control, close the door, verify the gas shut-off valve is “on,” and return to step 3.

Shutting Down the System:

If the tumbler will not start, remove it from service by turning the machine disconnect switch to the “off” position and turning the gas shut-off valve to the “off” position (handle should be at a right angle to the gas line).

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension and adjust if necessary (refer to Adjustment Section).

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve (gas models only). The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

5. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If it doesn’t stop, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

6. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

7. Start the tumbler and check the burner flame, adjusting the gas inlet shutter if necessary.

8. Check airflow switch operation by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 1-1/2″ (3.81 cm). Adjust if necessary.

9. Turn off the tumbler.

10. Check airflow switch operation again by opening the lint panel. The heating systems should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 6″ (15.24 cm) with a full load.

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2-1/2 minute cool-down cycle will start.

5. When the metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

NOTICE: Before adjusting, ensure all lint is removed from the lint compartment and screen. Both air inlet shutters on the burner must be adjusted for proper combustion.

1. Unlock and open the access door.

2. Start the tumbler and check the flame pattern. A correct mixture is indicated if the flame is primarily blue, with small yellow tips, and bends to the right of the heater section. Too little air is indicated if the flame is yellow, lazy, and smokey.

3. To adjust, loosen the air inlet shutter adjusting screw.

4. Open or close the air shutter as necessary to obtain the proper flame intensity.

5. After adjustment, tighten the air shutter adjusting screw securely.

6. If the shutter is correctly adjusted but the flame pattern is straight up, it means insufficient primary air is flowing through the tumbler. A flame that flares to the right and left indicates no air is flowing through the tumbler.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, air flow switch operation may be affected by a clogged lint screen, lack of make-up air, or obstructions in ducts. These conditions must be checked and corrected before adjusting the switch. Always adjust air flow at installation.

The counterweight should be adjusted so the airflow will force the disc away from the cabinet when the lint panel is opened 6 inches (15.24 cm) with a full load.

1. Load the tumbler.

2. Start the tumbler. Open the lint panel 6 inches (15.24 cm). The airflow disc should move away from the cabinet, opening the switch contacts and shutting off the heat system. This indicates proper operation.

3. If the switch does not open as described, it needs to be MORE sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight toward the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight toward the disc until it operates correctly.

4. If the switch opens BEFORE the lint panel is opened the proper distance, it needs to be LESS sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight away from the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight away from the disc until it operates correctly.

Loading Door Switch Adjustment:

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler when the door is opened.

1. Start the tumbler.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the loading door. The switch should close with an audible “click” when the door is closed 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct point:

a. Close the loading door completely.

b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops.

c. Tighten the lower screw on the switch coupler.

d. Return to step 1 to verify correct operation.

Cylinder Door Strike Adjustment:

The door strike must have sufficient tension to hold the door closed against the force of a tumbling load. Proper adjustment is when 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) of pull is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut on the door strike, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Retighten the jamnut.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation. The guard MUST be reinstalled after adjustment.

Proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) with light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and motor pulley.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt holding the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt:

a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen the V-belt:

a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler.

NOTE: The upper belt (Poly V-belt) requires no adjustment as it is self-adjusting.

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint from the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the lint screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the lint screen is torn, replace it immediately. A torn screen allows lint to flow into the ductwork, restricting air circulation.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps will allow lint to flow into the ductwork.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the probe will cause overheating.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

1. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

3. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

4. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

5. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

6. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

7. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

8. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

Quarterly Maintenance:

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit.

2. Perform daily and monthly lint cleaning.

3. Clean accumulated lint and debris from front and back motor air vents.

4. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve (handle at 90° angle to the line for “OFF”).

5. Remove the rear drive guard.

6. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension.

7. Reinstall the rear drive guard.

8. Energize the electrical circuit.

9. Turn on the gas supply (handle parallel to the line for “ON”).

Biannual Maintenance:

1. Perform all daily, monthly, and quarterly maintenance tasks.

2. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

3. With the gas off, unlock and open the service panel and inspect gas connections for evidence of leakage or loose connections. (NOTE: Spraying a mild solution of soap and water on joints will cause bubbles to appear on any leaking connections).

4. Close and securely lock the service panel.

5. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose connections.

6. Close the junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit.

7. Turn on the gas supply.

To safely decommission your SPEED QUEEN JC50CG, follow these steps:

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the gas supply external to the machine.

4. Turn off the manual gas shut-off valve on the machine.

5. If applicable, turn off the steam supply external to the machine.

6. Remove all electric, gas, and steam connections.
