GENERAL WARNINGS:

• Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate this machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death and/or property damage.

• To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury or death, do not operate the tumbler if it does not perform correctly. Immediately disconnect electrical service and contact an authorized service representative. Service and repairs are to be performed by authorized service representatives only.

FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS:

• To avoid creating any flammable vapors which may explode, ignite or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals or thinner.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

OPERATIONAL SAFETY:

• Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

• DO NOT tamper with controls.

• DO NOT bypass any safety devices.

• Always follow the fabric care instructions supplied by the garment manufacturer.

• Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

• DO NOT reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

• Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision is necessary when the tumbler is used near children.

• Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

• Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

• Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing.

The model and serial numbers for your SPEED QUEEN JC50CSH tumbler will be found on the nameplate. The nameplate is located on the rear of the tumbler or underneath the door hinge.

The specifications for the SPEED QUEEN JC50CSH, which is a 50 Pound (22 kg) High Pressure Steam Tumbler, are as follows:

Upon delivery of your SPEED QUEEN JC50CSH tumbler, visually inspect the crate, carton, and parts for any visible shipping damage. If there are signs of damage, have the carrier note the condition on the shipping papers before signing the receipt, or inform the carrier as soon as it is discovered. A written claim should be filed with the carrier immediately if articles are damaged or missing.

After inspection, remove the crate and protective cover and check the items listed on the packing list.

IMPORTANT: Remove the shipping tape from the two back draft dampers located in the exhaust thimble.

The following materials must be obtained locally for the installation of your SPEED QUEEN JC50CSH tumbler:

For all tumblers:

• One circuit breaker.

For steam drying tumblers only:

• One steam shut-off gate valve for the steam service line to be connected upstream of the solenoid steam valve.

• Two steam shut-off gate valves for each condensate return line.

• Flexible steam hoses with a 125 psig (8.79 kg/sq. cm) working pressure for connecting steam coils.

• Two steam traps for the steam coil outlet to the condensate return line.

• One steam pressure relief valve rated at 125 psig (8.79 kg/cm²).

Floor:

The drying tumbler may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed.

Layout:

Whenever possible, the tumbler should be installed along an outside wall where duct length can be kept to a minimum, and make-up air can be easily accessed. The construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler.

Venting:

For maximum efficiency and minimum lint accumulation, the tumbler air must be exhausted to the outdoors by the shortest possible route. Exhaust ducts must be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material and have smooth interior surfaces. Do not use sheet metal screws to join vent sections.

Make-Up Air:

The tumbler is a forced air exhausted unit and requires provisions for make-up air to replace the exhausted air. The recommended make-up air opening is 144 square inches (928 sq. cm). Protective louvers can reduce air movement, so the opening size must compensate for the area taken up by louvers.

Proper venting is essential for the operation of your SPEED QUEEN JC50CSH tumbler. Follow these guidelines:

Individual Venting:

• It is preferred to exhaust the tumbler individually to the outdoors.

• The maximum allowable length of venting is 14 feet (4.3 m) and two 90° elbows or equivalent.

• If the duct length exceeds this, the diameter must be increased by 10% for each additional 20 feet (6.1 m) of length.

• Airflow in the duct must be at least 1200 feet (366 m) per minute to ensure lint remains airborne.

Equivalent Length of Straight Duct for 90° Elbows:

• 6″ (15.2 cm) Duct: One 90° elbow = 7′ (2.1 m)

• 8″ (20.3 cm) Duct: One 90° elbow = 9.3′ (2.83 m)

• 10″ (25.4 cm) Duct: One 90° elbow = 11.6′ (3.5 m)

• 12″ (30.5 cm) Duct: One 90° elbow = 14′ (4.3 m)

Collector Venting:

• A main collector duct may be used if sized properly. The provided table should be consulted for minimum diameters, which should be increased if the collector length exceeds 20 feet (6.1 m).

• Individual tumbler ducts must enter the collector duct at a 45° angle in the direction of airflow.

• Never connect a tumbler duct at a 90° angle to the collector duct.

• Never connect two tumbler exhaust ducts directly across from each other at the point of entry.

• The collector system must be designed so that static back pressure does not exceed the maximum allowable pressure specified on the installation sticker on the rear of the tumbler.

The SPEED QUEEN JC50CSH tumbler must be grounded. All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. Do not use aluminum wire. Disconnect power before making any connections.

WARNING: All electrical connections must be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit before making any connections. Never attempt to connect a live circuit.

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. Each tumbler requires its own circuit breaker.

2. To connect the leads:

a. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

b. Turn the disconnect switch on the tumbler to “off” and open the junction box.

c. Insert the conduit-encased leads through a knockout hole in the junction box.

d. Connect the wire leads to the disconnect switch. For 3-Phase Units, connect one lead to each connection point.

e. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar inside the junction box.

3. For three-phase units, check the phase sequence:

a. Energize the electrical service and momentarily start the tumbler. Check the direction of cylinder rotation (viewed from the front). If it rotates clockwise, the sequence is correct. If it rotates counterclockwise, proceed to step b.

b. Disconnect power and reverse any two leads at the connections.

4. Close the junction box cover and turn the disconnect switch to “on”.

Positioning:

The tumbler can be removed from its shipping skid before moving to its final location. To do this, unscrew the four shipping capscrews (one at each corner). You may need to remove the lint panel door to access the two front capscrews. NOTE: Do not throw these four capscrews away; they are the leveling legs.

Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible. All four legs must rest firmly on the floor so the weight is evenly distributed and the tumbler does not rock.

Leveling:

The tumbler should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from side to side.

• To check the front-to-rear level, rotate the cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that bottom rib.

• To check the side-to-side level, place a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

The SPEED QUEEN JC50CSH is a high pressure steam model and requires a constant 80 to 100 psig (5.62 to 7.03 kg/sq. cm) steam service for optimum operation. The specific size of the steam service pipe depends on variables like length and system layout and should be determined by a qualified steam fitter.

WARNING: Flexible steam hoses connecting the solenoid steam valve to the coil inlets must have a 125 psig (8.79 kg/sq. cm) working pressure. A shut-off gate valve must be installed upstream from the solenoid steam valve. The steam solenoid valve must be supported so minimum load is exerted on the steam coil inlet connections.

Installing Steam Inlet Connections:

1. Install a manual shut-off gate valve in the condensate return line after the steam trap for each coil.

2. Connect the steam solenoid valve to the related steam coil inlet connection using nipples, flex hoses, unions, a tee, and a pressure relief valve.

3. Install a gate shut-off valve in the steam supply line. Connect the outlet of this shut-off valve to the solenoid steam valve inlet connection.

Installing Steam Trap and Condensate Return Connections:

1. Connect a flexible hose to each steam coil outlet.

2. Install a strainer to the end of each flexible hose.

3. Install a steam trap to each strainer. IMPORTANT: The steam trap must be installed a minimum of 10 inches (25.4 cm) below the steam coil outlet connections.

4. Install a gate shut-off valve to each steam trap.

5. Connect to the condensate return lines.

Removal of Existing Timing Cam:

1. Rotate the cam by hand until the “V” notch lines up beneath a ratchet tooth.

2. Insert a narrow screwdriver under the nylon cam, close to the clock shaft. Lift gently off the shaft, ensuring the pressure is directed upward and the “V” notch clears the ratchet tooth.

Installation of New Timing Cam:

1. Insert the drive into the timing cam with the wide prong in the wide hole of the cam.

2. Position the timing cam and drive fork over the timer shaft, aligning the timer flat with the drive fork and the “V” notch with one of the ratchet teeth.

3. Press the timing cam down firmly to seat it onto the motor shaft.

4. Remove all accumulated time by turning the cam counterclockwise until the switch shuts off. Apply moderate clockwise pressure to the fully seated timing cam and drive against the timing motor shaft. The meter must be advanced electrically for one full cycle before an accurate measure of time can be made.

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension and adjust if necessary (refer to the Drive V-Belt adjustment section).

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If it doesn’t stop, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

5. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

6. Turn off the tumbler.

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2 1/2 minute cool down cycle will start.

5. When the metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler when the door is opened. To adjust it, follow these steps:

1. Start the tumbler following its operating instructions.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3 inches (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4 inch (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the loading door. The switch should close with an audible “click” when the door is closed 3 inches (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4 inch (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct point:

a. Close the loading door completely.

b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops.

c. Tighten the lower screw on the switch coupler.

d. Return to step 1 to verify the adjustment.

The door strike must be adjusted to have sufficient tension to hold the loading door closed against the force of the tumbling load. Proper adjustment is achieved when a pull of 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut on the door strike, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Retighten the jamnut when finished.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation. The guard MUST be reinstalled after adjustment is made.

Proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) with light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and motor pulley. The upper poly V-belt is self-adjusting and requires no adjustment.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt that holds the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt:

a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen the V-belt:

a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint in the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the lint screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the lint screen is torn, replace it immediately. A torn screen allows lint to flow into the ductwork, restricting air circulation.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps will allow lint to flow into the ductwork.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the probe will cause overheating.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

1. Perform the daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

3. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

4. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

5. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

6. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

7. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

8. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Clean accumulated lint and other debris from the front and back motor air vents.

5. Remove the screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

6. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension (refer to the Adjustments section).

7. Check and clean the steam coils (Steam Models Only).

8. Reinstall the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

9. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily, monthly, and quarterly cleaning and inspection tasks.

3. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

4. Inspect the steam connections for evidence of leakage or loose connections (Steam Models Only).

5. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose connections.

6. Close the electrical junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

Follow these steps to safely decommission your SPEED QUEEN JC50CSH tumbler:

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the steam supply external to the machine.

4. Remove all electric and steam connections.
