Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate the SPEED QUEEN JC75CG according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death and/or property damage.

It must be understood that common sense, caution, and carefulness are factors which cannot be built into this tumbler. These factors must be supplied by the person(s) installing, maintaining, or operating the tumbler.

To reduce the risk of serious injury, install lockable door(s) to prevent public access to the rear of the tumblers.

To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury, or death, do not operate the SPEED QUEEN JC75CG if it does not perform according to these instructions. Immediately disconnect electrical service, shut off the gas supply, and contact an authorized service representative. Service and repairs are to be performed by authorized service representatives only.

To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury or death to persons when using the SPEED QUEEN JC75CG, follow these basic precautions:

• Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

• DO NOT tamper with controls.

• DO NOT bypass any safety devices.

• Always follow the fabric care instructions supplied by the garment manufacturer.

• Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

• DO NOT reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

To avoid creating any flammable vapors which may explode, ignite, or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials in the SPEED QUEEN JC75CG:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in, or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents, or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals, or thinner.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, serious injury or death to persons when using your SPEED QUEEN JC75CG, follow these basic precautions:

1. Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision of children is necessary when the tumbler is used near children.

2. Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

3. Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

4. Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate this machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death and/or property damage.

5. Run the tumbler with a load before putting it into service.

6. Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing. Disconnect power by shutting off the appropriate circuit breaker or fuse and by turning off the disconnect switch located on the rear of the tumbler.

7. All manually operated models are factory-equipped with an emergency stop button located on the front panel. Activation of the emergency stop switch stops all machine control circuit functions but does not remove all electrical power from the machine.

The following warning labels will be found on the SPEED QUEEN JC75CG drying tumbler:

• A clothes dryer produces combustible lint. TUMBLER MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

• Do not touch rotating parts.

• Do not touch surface until it has cooled.

• Do not operate without guards in place.

• Disconnect electrical power before servicing.

• To reduce risk of accumulating unsafe concentrations of combustion gases, tumbler MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

• WARNING! – This label contains multiple warnings, including: do not put articles soiled with flammable liquids in the dryer; do not store or use flammable liquids near the appliance; various chemicals can corrode the appliance; the dryer must be exhausted outdoors and the area kept free of lint; do not dry articles with foam rubber or similar materials; use for drying water-washed fabrics only; do not put articles with vegetable or cooking oil in the dryer; do not reach into the dryer until all parts stop moving; do not let children play in the dryer.

The model and serial numbers for your SPEED QUEEN JC75CG will be found on the nameplate located on the rear of the tumbler or underneath the door hinge.

The minimum clearances to the nearest combustible material for the SPEED QUEEN JC75CG are:

• Top: 12″ (30.5 cm) Minimum. 0″ is permitted for the first 4″ (10.2 cm) along the front of the machine.

• Back: 0″ – 24″ (61 cm) Minimum is recommended for service access.

• Sides: 0″ Permitted.

Upon delivery, visually inspect the crate, carton, and parts for any visible shipping damage. If there is damage or signs of possible damage, have the carrier note the condition on shipping papers before signing the receipt, or advise the carrier as soon as it is discovered. A written claim should be filed with the carrier immediately.

Remove the crate and protective cover and check items listed on the packing list.

IMPORTANT: Remove shipping tape from the two back draft dampers located in the exhaust thimble.

The following materials must be obtained locally for installation:

• One circuit breaker.

• One gas shut-off valve for the gas service line to the tumbler.

FLOOR

The SPEED QUEEN JC75CG may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed.

LAYOUT

Whenever possible, the tumbler should be installed along an outside wall where duct length can be kept to a minimum, and make-up air can be easily accessed. Construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler, as this would prevent an adequate air supply to the combustion chamber.

VENTING

For maximum efficiency and minimum lint accumulation, tumbler air must be exhausted to the outdoors by the shortest possible route.

Properly sized exhaust ducts are essential for proper operation. All elbows should be the sweep type. Exhaust ducts must be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, equivalent in strength and corrosion resistance to galvanized sheet steel not less than 0.0195 inches (0.495 mm) thick.

Ducts must be assembled so interior surfaces are smooth to reduce lint accumulation. Do not use sheet metal screws to join vent sections.

Where an exhaust duct pierces a combustible wall or ceiling, an opening 4 inches (10.2 cm) larger in diameter than the duct shall be provided, with the duct centered. The space around the duct must be sealed with non-combustible material.

Individual Venting: It is preferred to exhaust the tumbler individually to the outdoors. The cross area of the installed venting must not be less than the cross area of the tumbler’s exhaust thimble. Maximum allowable length is 14 feet (4.3 m) and two 90° elbows or equivalent.

With the tumbler in operation, airflow at any point in the duct must be at least 1200 feet (366 m) per minute to ensure lint remains airborne.

The table below shows how to determine the equivalent length of straight duct for different elbow sizes.

Example: A 6-inch (15.2 cm) diameter duct’s equivalent length of 14 feet (4.3 m) of duct and two 90° elbows is:

Equivalent length = 14 feet (4.3 m) + (2) 90° elbows

= 14 feet (4.3 m) + 7 feet (2.1 m) + 7 feet (2.1 m)

= 28 feet (8.5 m)

The SPEED QUEEN JC75CG is a forced air exhausted tumbler and requires provisions for make-up air to replace the air it exhausts.

The manufacturer’s recommended make-up air opening is 195 square inches (1258 sq. cm). At a minimum, the tumbler must have at least 1 sq. in. (2.54 cm²) of opening for every 1000 BTU/hr of input rating for proper combustion.

Protective louvers in the opening can reduce air movement by approximately 40%, so the opening size must compensate for the area taken up by louvers.

Make-up air openings for a room containing the tumbler and/or other gas-fired appliances must be increased sufficiently to prevent downdrafts in any vents when all tumblers are in operation. Do not locate gravity-vented appliances between the tumbler and make-up air openings.

Yes, there are two important warnings regarding the air supply and exhaust:

Solvent Gases: Solvent gases and vapors from dry cleaning machines create acids when drawn through the heater of a drying tumbler. These acids are corrosive to the tumbler and the laundry load. Ensure the make-up air is free of solvent gases and vapors. If dry cleaning machines are in the same area, the tumbler make-up air must come from a source free of these contaminants.

Exhaust Location: To reduce the risk of fire and accumulation of combustible gases, DO NOT exhaust tumbler air into a window well, gas vent, chimney, or an enclosed, unventilated area such as an attic, wall, ceiling, crawl space, or concealed space of a building.

NOTE: Do not install wire mesh or screen in the exhaust opening as lint will build up and prevent proper air discharge.

General Requirements

Gas and High Pressure Steam Drying Tumblers

The SPEED QUEEN JC75CG must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding reduces the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance for electric current. The tumbler must be connected to a grounded metal, permanent wiring system, or an equipment grounding conductor must be run with the circuit conductors and connected to the PE Busbar.

To reduce the risk of fire and electric shock, check with a qualified serviceman for proper grounding procedures. Improper connection of the equipment grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock.

If the electrical supply is coming from a three-phase service, DO NOT connect a “Stinger Leg” to a single-phase machine.

All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit before making any connections.

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. If installing more than one tumbler, provide a separate circuit breaker for each.

2. Perform the following steps:

a. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

b. Turn “off” the disconnect switch on the tumbler and open the junction box.

c. Insert the conduit-encased leads through a knockout hole in the junction box.

d. Connect wire leads to the disconnect switch.

e. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

3. For three-phase units only, check the electrical service phase sequence:

a. Energize the electrical service and momentarily start the tumbler. Check the direction of cylinder rotation. If it rotates clockwise (viewed from the front), the phase sequence is correct. If it rotates counterclockwise, proceed to step ‘b’.

b. Disconnect power and reverse any two leads at the connections.

4. Close the junction box cover and turn “on” the disconnect switch.

Positioning:

The tumbler may be removed from its shipping skid by unscrewing the four shipping capscrews, one at each corner. The lint panel door will need to be removed to access the two front capscrews.

NOTE: Do not throw these four capscrews away – they are the leveling legs.

Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible. All four legs must rest firmly on the floor so the tumbler’s weight is evenly distributed and it does not rock.

Leveling:

The SPEED QUEEN JC75CG should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear, and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from side to side. To check the front-to-rear level, rotate the cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that rib. The side-to-side level should be checked by placing a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

The size of the gas service pipe depends on many variables (length, tees, etc.). Specific pipe size information should be obtained from a gas supplier.

It is important that equal gas pressure be maintained at all tumbler gas connections. This can be best achieved by installing a one-inch pipe gas loop.

If the tumbler is to be connected to Liquefied Petroleum (L.P.) gas, a vent to the outdoors must be provided in the room where the tumbler is installed to reduce the risk of fire or explosion.

To determine the correct pipe size, you need the total BTU/hr load of all appliances on the line and the equivalent length of the pipe run from the meter. Use the following table for Natural Gas at 6.5 ± 1.5 inch water column pressure. This table is based on a 0.3″ water column pressure drop.

Before connecting, ensure the gas service is the same as specified on the tumbler’s nameplate.

• NATURAL GAS service must be supplied at 6.5 ± 1.5 inch water column pressure (1.62 ± .37 kPa).

• L.P. GAS service must be supplied at 11 ± .3 inch water column pressure (2.74 ± .07 kPa).

If the gas service is not the same as specified, DO NOT CONNECT THE GAS LINE. The gas burner orifice and gas valve must be converted first by authorized personnel.

Purge air and sediment from the gas service line before connecting it loosely to the tumbler. Purge remaining air until the odor of gas is detected, then tighten the connection. Use pipe compound resistant to the actions of L.P. gas on all pipe threads.

WARNING: Check all pipe connections, internal and external, for gas leaks using a soapy solution. To reduce the risk of explosion or fire, DO NOT USE AN OPEN FLAME TO CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS! Gas connections should be checked annually for leakage.

WARNING: The tumbler and its individual shut-off valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing of that system at test pressures in excess of 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa). The tumbler must be isolated from the gas supply piping system by closing its individual manual shut-off valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping system at test pressure equal to or less than 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa).

IMPORTANT: DO NOT block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler with laundry, etc. Doing so would prevent adequate air supply to the tumbler’s heat chamber.

A typical tumbler enclosure can touch the tumbler’s top and side panels. However, clearances must be maintained for safety and servicing.

• NOTICE: Clearance of the tumbler cabinet from combustible construction must be a minimum of 12 inches (30.5 cm) at the top.

• Rear Clearance: A minimum of 24″ (61 cm) is required, with 36″ (91.4 cm) recommended for maintenance purposes.

• Side Clearance: 0″ clearance is permitted for the first 4″ (10.16 cm) from the front, but sufficient clearance must be maintained for servicing.

• WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury, install lockable doors to prevent public access to the rear of tumblers.

Lighting the System:

1. Turn the machine disconnect switch, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position.

2. Turn the gas shut-off valve, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position (gas valve handle should be parallel with the gas line).

3. Start the tumbler, following its operating instructions.

NOTE: The ignition control circuitry will verify the airflow switch is open before starting the cylinder motor. Once the motor starts, air flowing through the tumbler will close the airflow switch. The tumbler will purge air for 18 seconds. Ignition will then start by a three-second release of gas from the gas valve and sparking of the ignitor. If ignition does not occur during the first three seconds, the ignition control will “lockout,” causing the gas valve to close and a red button on the ignition control to illuminate.

To reset the ignition system, open the access door and press the red button on the ignition control. Close and lock the access door, verify the gas shut-off valve is in the “on” position, and return to step three.

Shutting Down the System:

If the tumbler will not start, remove it from service by turning the machine disconnect switch to the “off” position and turning the gas shut-off valve to the “off” position (gas valve handle should be at a right angle to the gas line).

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension, adjust if necessary (refer to Adjustment Section).

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

5. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If the cylinder does not stop, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

6. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

7. Start the tumbler and check the burner flame, adjust the gas inlet shutter if necessary.

8. Check air flow switch operation by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 1-1/2″ (3.81 cm). Adjust if necessary.

9. Turn off the tumbler.

10. Check air flow switch operation by opening the lint panel with a full load. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 6″ (15.24 cm).

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH and set the drying and cool down selectors to their maximum settings.

2. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start, the heat system will turn on, the drying indicator will light, and the drying selector will rotate counterclockwise.

3. When the drying selector reaches zero (0), the heat system will shut off, the drying indicator will turn off, the cooling indicator will light, and the cooling selector will rotate counterclockwise.

4. When the cooling selector reaches zero (0), the motor will stop and the cooling indicator will turn off, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

NOTICE: Both air inlet shutters on the burner must be adjusted for proper combustion and maximum efficiency. Before adjusting, ensure all lint is removed from the lint compartment and screen.

1. Unlock and open the access door.

2. Start the tumbler and check the flame pattern. A correct air and gas mixture is indicated if the flame pattern is primarily blue with small yellow tips and bends to the right of the heater section. Too little air is indicated if the flame is yellow, lazy, and smokey.

3. To adjust the air shutter, loosen the air inlet shutter adjusting screw.

4. Open or close the air shutter as necessary to obtain the proper flame intensity.

5. After adjustment, tighten the air shutter adjusting screw securely.

6. If the shutter is correctly adjusted but the flame pattern is straight up, it means insufficient primary air is flowing through the tumbler. If the flame flares to the right and left, it indicates no air is flowing through the tumbler.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, air flow switch operation may be affected by a clogged lint screen, lack of make-up air, or obstructions in the ductwork. These conditions must be checked and corrected before adjusting the switch.

The switch should be adjusted so airflow will force the disc away from the cabinet when the lint panel is opened 6 inches (15.24 cm) with a full load. Adjust as follows:

1. Load the tumbler.

2. Start the tumbler. Open the lint panel 6 inches (15.24 cm). The airflow disc should move away from the cabinet, opening the switch contacts and shutting off the heat system. This indicates proper operation.

3. If the switch is not opening as described, it needs to be MORE sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight toward the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight toward the disc until it operates correctly.

4. If the switch opens BEFORE the lint panel is opened the proper distance, it needs to be LESS sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight away from the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight away from the disc until it operates correctly.

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler anytime the loading door is opened. To adjust:

1. Start the tumbler following operating instructions.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the loading door. The switch should close with an audible “click” when the door is closed 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct point:

a. Close the loading door completely.

b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops.

c. Tighten the lower screw on the switch coupler.

d. Return to step 1 to verify the new adjustment.

The door strike must be adjusted to have sufficient tension to hold the loading door closed against the force of a tumbling load. Proper adjustment is when 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) of pull is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Retighten the jamnut when finished.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation.

Proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) by applying light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and motor pulley.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt holding the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt:

a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen the V-belt:

a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler. The upper belt requires no adjustment as it is self-adjusting.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, the guard MUST be installed on the rear of the tumbler after belt adjustment is made.

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint in the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the lint screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the lint screen is torn, replace it immediately.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps will allow lint to flow into the ductwork.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the probe will cause overheating.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

1. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

3. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

4. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

5. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

6. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

7. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

8. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Clean accumulated lint and other debris from the front and back motor air vents.

5. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line. The handle should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

6. Remove screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

7. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension (refer to the Adjustments section).

8. Reinstall the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

9. Energize the electrical circuit by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

10. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Perform quarterly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

5. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

6. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

7. Unlock and open the service panel and inspect gas connections for evidence of leakage or loose connections. NOTE: Spraying a mild solution of soap and water on joints will cause bubbles to appear on any leaking connections.

8. Close and securely lock the service panel.

9. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose connections.

10. Close the electrical junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

11. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the gas supply external to the machine.

4. Turn off the manual gas shut-off valve on the machine.

5. Remove all electric and gas connections.
