If you smell gas, follow these safety instructions carefully:

1. Do not try to light a match or cigarette, or turn on any gas or electrical appliance.

2. Do not touch any electrical switch; do not use any phone in your building.

3. Clear the room, building, or area of all occupants.

4. Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions carefully.

5. If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department.

Under certain conditions, hydrogen gas may be produced in a water heater that has not been used for two weeks or more. Hydrogen gas can be explosive under these circumstances.

If the hot water has not been used for two weeks or more, prevent the possibility of damage or injury by turning on all hot water faucets and allowing them to run for several minutes. Do this before using any electrical appliance connected to the hot water system. This simple procedure will allow any built-up hydrogen gas to escape.

Since the gas is flammable, do not smoke or use an open flame or appliance during this process.

This appliance must be properly installed and located in accordance with the installation instructions before it is used.

• Properly ground the appliance to conform with all codes and ordinances. Follow details in the installation instructions.

• Install or store it where it will not be exposed to temperatures below freezing or to the weather, which could cause permanent damage and invalidate the warranty.

• Connect to a properly rated, protected, and sized power supply circuit to avoid electrical overload.

• Remove all sharp packing items and dispose of all shipping materials properly.

For exhaust and ducting on the MABE GE MCL2040ESBB:

1. Gas dryers must be exhausted to the outside.

2. Use only rigid metal 4″ diameter ductwork inside the dryer cabinet. Use only rigid metal conductor flexible metal 4″ diameter ductwork for exhausting to the outdoors. Never use plastic or other combustible, easy-to-puncture ductwork.

To ensure safety and proper operation of your MABE GE MCL2040ESBB, maintain your laundry area as follows:

• Keep the area underneath and around your appliances free of combustible materials (lint, paper, rags, etc.), gasoline, chemicals, or other flammable vapors and liquids.

• Keep the floor around your appliances clean and dry to reduce the possibility of slipping.

• Keep all laundry aids (such as detergents, bleaches, etc.) out of the reach of children, preferably in a locked cabinet. Observe all warnings on container labels to avoid injury.

• Never climb on or stand on the Stacked Unit – Laundry Center.

For your safety, please adhere to the following instructions when using your MABE GE MCL2040ESBB:

• Do not mix chlorine bleach with ammonia or acids such as vinegar and/or rust remover, as this can produce toxic gas.

• Never attempt to operate the appliance if it is damaged, malfunctioning, or has missing/broken parts.

• Never reach into the appliance while it is moving.

• Before loading, unloading, or adding clothes, wait until the machine has completely stopped.

• Clean the lint filter before each load. Do not use the dryer if the lint screen is not in place.

• Do not wash or dry articles that have been in contact with combustible or explosive substances (wax, oil, paint, gasoline, kerosene, etc.).

• Do not place items exposed to cooking oils in your dryer as they may cause a chemical reaction that could lead to a fire.

• Do not dry articles containing rubber, plastic, or similar materials that may melt or burn.

• Garments labeled “Dry Away from Heat” or “Do Not Tumble Dry” must not be put in the dryer.

• Do not dry fiberglass articles in your dryer.

When your MABE GE MCL2040ESBB is not in use, follow these steps:

• Grasp the plug firmly when disconnecting the appliance to avoid damaging the cord.

• Turn off water faucets to relieve pressure on hoses and valves and to minimize leakage. It is recommended to change the fill hoses every 5 years.

• Before discarding the appliance, remove the washer and dryer lids to prevent children from hiding inside.

For long vacations, be sure the water supply is shut off at the faucets. Drain all water from hoses if the weather will be below freezing.

Follow these steps for a basic washing cycle on your MABE GE MCL2040ESBB:

Step 1. Add detergent, liquid bleach, and fabric softener (optional) to their respective dispensers.

Step 2. Add clothing to the washer basket.

Step 3. Select the load size and other wash options, then select the wash cycle.

Step 4. Close the lid and press START.

For general loads, place clothes evenly around the infuser (preferably not over it) so that the load is evenly distributed. The machine will start the cycle by turning the basket to accommodate the load.

For bulky items, a special accommodation is suggested. Take one end of the item and insert it in a spiral shape, keeping it arranged around the basket until you reach the other end. If the clothes exceed the indicated limit, compress them slightly inward to ensure the volume is below the limit.

For waterproof or water-resistant items, ONLY use the Bulky cycle. DO NOT use other cycles for items like diaper covers, bulky waterproof bed covers, vehicle covers, sleeping bags, waterproof coats, etc. Using the wrong cycle can cause abnormal vibration and may result in injury or damage to the washer, walls, floor, or clothing. Do not mix waterproof and non-waterproof items.

The Sanitized cycle is designed to eliminate bacteria, viruses, and germs found in clothing. For correct operation, you must use hot water. Ensure that there is hot water available in your installation.

1. Put the detergent in the bottom of the tub first, then add the clothes.

2. This cycle is best for high-cotton items such as towels, jeans, sheets, and bathrobes.

3. For best cycle performance, set the “Temperature” and “Water Level” knobs to the “Automatic” position.

Here is a guide to the washer controls on your MABE GE MCL2040ESBB:

1. **Selecting cycles:** Turn the knob to select from the available programs depending on the type of clothes you are washing. Each program controls the duration and intensity of the washing process.

2. **Temperatures:** Select the water temperature for the wash and rinse cycles.

3. **Water level:** There are 4 water levels and one automatic sensor. Select the one you need or let the automatic sensor do it for you.

4. **Selecting functions:** Press the select button repeatedly to choose independent functions of the wash cycle or a combination of stages. You can select to wash only, rinse only, wash and spin, etc. The lights will turn on to indicate the selected functions.

5. **Start/pause:** Press this button to start operating your washer. Press it again to pause the operation. To resume, press the button again.

Your MABE GE MCL2040ESBB washer has programs designed to better clean and care for your clothes. Refer to the table below for details.

In personal touch mode, you can go through the wash stages independently. This allows you to take advantage of the wash water or rinse water for another load of laundry.

• **Wash only:** This function will fill the washer and then provide agitation. At the end of the wash stage, the spin light will turn on, but the water will not be drained.

• **Rinse only:** This function drains and spins the wash. Then, it will fill the tub with clean water and provide rinse agitation to complete the stage. The water is not drained at the end, and the rinse light will stay on.

• **Only wash and rise:** It will fill the washer and provide wash agitation. At the end, it will drain the washer, and the spin light will come on. After that, it will fill the tub with clean water and provide rinse agitation, without draining the water at the end. The Rinse light will stay on.

• **Only wash and spin:** This function will fill the washer and provide wash agitation. At the end, it will drain the water and spin the clothes to complete the cycle. The spin light will stay on.

• **Only rise and spin:** This function will drain the water. The spin light will turn on, and the tub will be filled with clean water for rinse agitation. Then, it will drain the water and spin the clothing.

The fabric softener dispenser automatically releases liquid fabric softener at the proper time during the cycle. To use it correctly, follow these steps:

1. Make sure the dispenser is securely attached to the agitator.

2. Use only liquid diluted fabric softener. Pour the amount recommended on the package into the dispenser. Never pour fabric softener directly on clothes, as it may cause stains.

3. Add water to the dispenser until it reaches the maximum fill line.

4. Select the FABRIC SOFTENER setting on the control panel for proper dispersion.

Note: Do not stop the washer or raise the lid during the first spin, as this will cause the dispenser to empty too soon. Do not pour bleach into the fabric softener dispenser.

1. Remove the dispenser from the top of the agitator.

2. Separate the dispenser cup from the cover by grasping the top and pushing down on the inside of the cup with your fingers. The dispenser cup will pop free from the cover.

3. To clean the dispenser, soak both the dispenser cup and cover in a solution of 3.8 liters of warm water, 1/4 cup (60 ml) of heavy-duty liquid detergent, and 1 cup (240 ml) of bleach.

4. If necessary, loosen any accumulated dirt with a clean, soft cloth after soaking. Do not use a stiff brush, as it may roughen the surface of the dispenser.

5. Rinse and reassemble the dispenser. Place the dispenser back on the agitator.

The water fill dilutes chlorine bleach as the washer fills for the wash cycle.

1. Check clothing care labels for special instructions.

2. Measure liquid bleach carefully, following instructions on the bottle. Never pour undiluted liquid chlorine bleach directly onto clothes or into the wash basket. Do not pour powdered bleach into the bleach funnel.

3. Before starting the washer, pour the measured amount of bleach directly into the bleach funnel. Avoid splashing or overfilling.

Important: Do not mix chlorine bleach with ammonia or acids such as vinegar and/or rust remover, as this can produce a toxic gas.

Below are the recommended wash loads for your MABE GE MCL2040ESBB.

Always follow the fabric manufacturer’s care label when laundering.

• **Sorting Wash Loads:** Sort by color (whites, lights, colors), soil level, and fabric type (sturdy cottons, easy care, delicates). Also, separate fabrics that produce lint (like terry cloth) from those that collect lint (like velveteen).

• **Proper Use of Detergent:** Add detergent and turn on the washer before adding items so the detergent can work effectively. Using too little or too much detergent is a common cause of laundry problems. Use less detergent for soft water, a smaller load, or a lightly soiled load.

• **Loading the Washer:** Load the washer with dry items, no higher than the top row of holes in the washer basket. When loading wet items, set the right water level for items to move freely; the water should just cover the clothes. To add items after the washer has started, lift the lid and submerge them in the water. Ensure bulky items are distributed along the basket wall. Agitation will not begin if the lid is up.

• **Wash Basket:** Leave the lid open after washing to allow moisture to evaporate. To clean the basket, use a clean soft cloth dampened with liquid detergent, then rinse. Do not use harsh or gritty cleaners.

• **Fill Hoses:** It is recommended to change the hoses every 5 years.

• **Exterior:** Immediately wipe off any spills with a damp cloth. Try not to hit the surface with sharp objects.

• **Moving and Storage:** Ask a service technician to remove water from the drain pump and hoses. Refer to the installation instructions for information on how to reinstall the shipping rod to keep the tub stationary when moving the washer.

During the automatic drying cycle, the knob will not turn until the thermostat sensor indicates the clothes are dry; the knob will then automatically turn to the off position.

• **High:** For regular to heavy cottons. For most loads, select OPTIMUM DRY.

• **Sanitized:** Do not use for delicate clothing like lycra or sports, or items with a high percentage of synthetics. Do not put in more than 6 clothes that have laces or ribbons.

• **Medium:** For synthetics, blends, and items labeled permanent press.

• **Low:** For delicates, synthetics, and special care knits. For items labeled tumble dry low.

Automatic cycles determine fabric dryness. Select “less dry” if you want your clothes slightly damp at the end of the cycle. Select “more dry” if you want them to be more dry.

The timed dry cycles run for the amount of time you select on the timer.

• **Dewrinkle:** For removing wrinkles from items that are clean and very lightly damp.

• **Fluff:** For freshening or removing lint from already dry clothing.

To start a timed cycle, close the dryer door and press start. Opening the door during operation will stop the dryer. To restart, close the door and press start again.

The Sanitized cycle on the dryer is a high-temperature cycle. The duration depends on the humidity, quantity, and type of clothing entered. It is recommended for clothes with a high cotton content, such as towels, jeans, and sheets.

For best performance, fill the dryer up to half or 3/4 parts maximum. Verify that the dryer duct is in good condition and free of obstructions.

• **Exterior:** Wipe or dust any spills or washing compounds with a damp cloth. Dryer control panel and finishes may be damaged by some laundry pretreatment soil and stain remover products. Keep these products away from the dryer.

• **The Lint Filter:** Clean the filter before each use. Slide the grid that covers the filter out and move your fingers through the filter. Wax buildup may form due to fabric softeners; to remove this residue, wash the lint filter with soap and warm water. Dry it completely before replacing it. Do not operate the dryer without the lint filter and grid in place. Have a qualified technician vacuum the lint from the dryer once a year.

• **The Exhaust Duct:** Inspect and clean the exhaust duct at least once a year to prevent clogging, which can lengthen drying time. Follow these steps:

1. Turn off the electrical supply by disconnecting the plug from the wall socket.

2. Disconnect the duct from the dryer.

3. Vacuum the duct with a hose attachment and reconnect the duct.

• **The Exhaust Hood:** Using a mirror, make sure the inner flaps of the exhaust hood move freely when operating. Check that there is no wildlife (birds, insects, etc.) nesting inside the duct or hood.

For the best drying performance, the MABE GE MCL2040ESBB dryer needs to be properly vented. The dryer will use more energy and run longer if ventilation does not meet the following specifications:

• Use only rigid metal 4″ diameter material for the duct inside the dryer cabinet.

• Use only rigid or flexible metal 4″ diameter material approved by UL for the duct of the exhaust leading to the outside.

• Do not use plastic or other combustible ductwork.

• Use the shortest length possible.

• Do not crush or collapse the duct.

• Avoid resting the duct on sharp objects.

• Venting must conform to local building codes.

If you see too many suds, it is likely due to using too much detergent. Measure detergent carefully. Use less soap if you have soft water, a smaller load, or a lightly soiled load.

There are several possible reasons for water leaks:

• **Fill hoses or drain hose is improperly connected:** Make sure hose connections are tight at faucets and washers are in place. Ensure the end of the drain hose is correctly inserted and secured to the drain facility.

• **Household drain may be clogged:** Check household plumbing. You may need to call a plumber.

• **Constant pressure to hoses at the water source:** Tighten hoses at the faucets and turn the water off after each use. Check the condition of fill hoses; they should be replaced every 5 years.

• **Drain hose is kinked or improperly connected:** Straighten the drain hose and make sure the washer is not sitting on it. The top of the drain outlet should be less than 8 ft (2.5 m) above the floor.

If the water temperature seems incorrect, check the following:

• **Water supply is turned off or improperly connected:** Turn hot and cold faucets completely on and make sure hoses are connected to the correct faucets.

• **The mesh filters of the water valve are clogged:** Turn off the water source and remove the water connection hoses from the upper back of the washer. Use a brush to clean the washer valves, then reconnect the hoses and turn the water back on.

• **House water heater is not properly set:** Make sure the house water heater is delivering water at 120°F–140°F (48°C–60°C).

Also, note that new detergents are formulated to work at lower water temperatures without affecting washer performance.

If your washer won’t operate, here are some things to check:

• **Washer is unplugged:** Make sure the cord is plugged securely into a working outlet.

• **Water supply is turned off:** Turn both hot and cold faucets fully on.

• **Controls are not set properly:** Check the controls.

• **Lid is open:** The safety feature prevents agitation and spinning when the lid is open. Close the lid and restart the cycle.

• **The circuit breaker/fuse is tripped/blown:** Check your house circuit breakers/fuses. Replace fuses or reset the breaker. The washer should have a separate outlet.

• **Electronics need to be reset:** Unplug the washer, wait 2 minutes, plug it back in, and press START.

• **START was not pressed:** Press the START button.

• **Lid magnet is missing:** This may require a service call.

• **Dye transfer:** Separate whites or lightly colored items from dark colors.

• **Insufficient amount of detergent:** Use more detergent, especially with larger loads. Be sure to follow the detergent manufacturer’s directions.

• **Hard water:** Use a water conditioner like Calgon brand or install a water softener.

• **Water is not hot enough:** Make sure the water heater is delivering water at 120°F – 140°F (48°C – 60°C).

• **Washer is overloaded:** Select the load size based on the laundry load.

• **Dye transfer:** Sort clothes by color. If a fabric label states to wash separately, unstable dyes may be indicated.

• **Clothes are air or line dried:** If you do not dry your clothes with a clothes dryer, they may retain more lint.

• **Incorrect sorting:** Separate lint producers (like chenille) from lint collectors.

• **Washing too long:** Wash small loads for a shorter time than larger loads.

• **Detergent not dissolving:** Add detergent as the basket is filling with water, before loading clothes. Try a liquid detergent or use warmer water.

• **Overloading:** Load clothes loosely, no higher than the top row of holes in the washer basket.

• **Incorrect use of fabric softener:** Check the fabric softener package for instructions and follow directions for using the dispenser.

• **Improper sorting:** Avoid mixing heavy items (like work clothes) with light items (like blouses). Try a fabric softener.

• **Overloading or incorrect water level:** Load the washer so clothes have enough room to move freely and the water covers all garments.

• **Incorrect wash and dry cycles:** Match the cycle selection to the type of fabric you are washing.

• **Repeated washing in water that is too hot:** This can set wrinkles in some fabrics.

If your dryer doesn’t start, check the following:

• **Dryer is unplugged:** Make sure the dryer plug is pushed completely into the outlet.

• **Fuse is blown/circuit breaker is tripped:** Check the house fuse/circuit breaker box and replace the fuse or reset the breaker. Note: Most electric dryers use 2 fuses/breakers.

If the dryer runs but does not heat:

• **Fuse is blown/breaker is tripped:** Check the house fuse/circuit breaker box and replace both fuses or reset both breakers. The dryer may dry if only one fuse is blown or one breaker is tripped.

• **Gas service is off (for gas models):** Make sure the main and dryer gas taps are completely open.

• **Improper use of fabric softener:** Follow the directions on the fabric softener package.

• **Drying dirty items with clean ones:** Use your dryer to dry only clean items. Dirty items can stain clean items and the dryer.

• **Clothes were not completely clean:** Sometimes stains which cannot be seen when clothes are wet appear after drying. Use proper washing procedures before drying.

• **No fabric softener was used:** Try using a fabric softener.

• **Overdrying:** Try a fabric softener and set the dryer to LESS DRY or DAMP DRY.

• **Synthetics, permanent press, and blends can cause static:** Try a fabric softener.

• **Improper sorting:** Separate heavy items from lightweight items.

• **Large loads of heavy fabrics:** These contain more moisture and take longer to dry. Separate large, heavy fabrics into smaller loads.

• **Improperly set controls:** Match control settings to the load you are drying.

• **Lint filter is full:** Clean the lint filter before each load.

• **Improper or obstructed ducting:** Check installation instructions for proper ducting/venting. Make sure ducting is clean, free of kinks, and unobstructed. Check that the outside wall damper operates easily.

• **Overloading:** Do not put more than one washer load in the dryer at a time.
