To reset your JVC KD-SH909, press the reset button located on the front panel using a ball-point pen or a similar tool. Please note that your preset adjustments, such as preset channels or sound adjustments, will be erased.

For safety:

• Do not raise the volume level too much, as this will block outside sounds, making driving dangerous.

• Stop the car before performing any complicated operations.

Temperature inside the car:

• If you have parked the car for a long time in hot or cold weather, wait until the temperature in the car becomes normal before operating the unit.

CAUTION:

• NEVER insert your finger in between the control panel and the unit, as it may get caught or hurt.

2. CAUTION: Invisible laser radiation when open and interlock failed or defeated. Avoid direct exposure to beam.

3. CAUTION: Do not open the top cover. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Leave all servicing to qualified service personnel.

4. CAUTION: This CD player uses invisible laser radiation, however, is equipped with safety switches to prevent radiation emission when unloading CDs. It is dangerous to defeat the safety switches.

5. CAUTION: Use of controls, adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may result in hazardous radiation exposure.

To turn on the power and select a source:

Press the SOURCE / ⏻ button. When you press it for the first time, the power comes on. Each subsequent press cycles through the available sources.

The source order for the JVC KD-SH909 is as follows:

AM TUNER (AM) → FM TUNER (FM) → CD → LINE INPUT (LINE) → CD CHANGER (CD CH) → AUX INPUT (AUX)

Notes on source selection:

• If a disc is not in the loading slot, you cannot select CD.

• Without a connected CD changer, you cannot select it as a source.

• If “LINE IN” or “AUX IN” is set to “OFF” in the settings, you cannot select them.

To turn off the power:

Press and hold the SOURCE / ⏻ button until “SEE YOU” appears on the display.

Turn the control dial to adjust the volume. Turn it clockwise to increase and counter-clockwise to decrease the volume. The volume level will appear on the display. After adjusting, you can push the control dial in to prevent unintended operations; push it again to make it come out for further use.

To drop the volume in a moment (Attenuate):

Press and hold the ATT button. “ATT” will start flashing, and the volume will drop significantly. To resume the previous volume, press and hold the ATT button again or turn the control dial clockwise.

Volume Setting Caution:

CDs produce very little noise compared to other sources like the tuner. If the volume level is adjusted high for the tuner, the sudden increase in output level when playing a CD can damage your speakers. Always lower the volume before playing a disc and adjust it as required during playback.

The display demonstration is activated by default and starts automatically after about 3 minutes of no operations.

To cancel the display demonstration:

1. Press and hold the SEL (select) button for more than 2 seconds until a PSM (Preferred Setting Mode) item appears on the display.

2. Use the arrow buttons to select “DEMO MODE” if it’s not already shown.

3. Turn the control dial to select “OFF.”

4. Press the SEL button to finish the setting.

To activate the display demonstration:

Repeat the same procedure, but select “ON” in step 3.

1. Press and hold the SEL (select) button for more than 2 seconds to enter the PSM menu.

2. Select “CLOCK H (hour)” if not shown, then turn the control dial to adjust the hour.

3. Press the arrow button to select “CLOCK M (minute),” then turn the control dial to adjust the minute.

4. Press the SEL button to finish the setting.

To check the current time when the unit is turned off, press the DISP (D) button. The unit will power on, show the time for 5 seconds, and then power off again.

Using the MODE (M) button:

If you press the MODE (M) button, the unit enters “functions mode.” In this mode, the number buttons (1-6) and the DISP (D) button act as different function buttons. A time countdown indicator will light up. To use these buttons for their original function again, either wait for 5 seconds without pressing any button, or press the MODE (M) button again to exit functions mode.

Changing Display Patterns:

This unit has two display patterns: one with source symbol animation and one without. To change the pattern, first press MODE (M), then press DISP (D) within 5 seconds. Each press of DISP (D) will toggle between the two patterns.

Select a Band and Automatically Search for Stations:

1. Press the SOURCE button repeatedly to select FM or AM.

2. For FM, press the BAND (B) button to cycle through the FM bands (FM1, FM2, FM3).

3. Press the up or down arrow buttons (◄◄ / ►►) to start automatic searching. The search stops when a station is received. To stop searching manually, press the same arrow button again.

Tune to Strong FM Stations Only (Local Seek):

1. While listening to an FM broadcast, press the MODE (M) button.

2. While in functions mode, press the LO (local) button (number 3). The LOCAL indicator will light up on the display. This function limits searching to only strong signals. Press it again to turn it off.

Manually Search for Stations:

1. Press and hold an up or down arrow button (◄◄ / ►►) until “M” (manual) starts flashing on the display.

2. While “M” is flashing, press the arrow buttons briefly to tune up or down in steps. The manual mode will turn off automatically after 5 seconds of inactivity.

Improve Reception for Weak FM Stereo Broadcasts:

1. While listening to an FM broadcast, press the MODE (M) button.

2. While in functions mode, press the MO (monaural) button (number 2). The MO indicator lights up, and the broadcast will be received in monaural. This improves reception clarity but removes the stereo effect.

You can store up to 6 stations for each band (FM1, FM2, FM3, and AM).

Automatic Preset for FM Stations (SSM – Strong-station Sequential Memory):

1. Select the FM band (FM1, FM2, or FM3) you want to store stations in.

2. Press and hold both arrow buttons (which also function as SSM buttons) for more than 2 seconds. “SSM” will appear on the display.

3. The unit will search for and automatically store the 6 strongest stations in that band. When finished, it will tune to the station stored in preset 1.

Manual Preset for FM and AM Stations:

1. Tune in to the station you want to store.

2. Press and hold the number button (1 – 6) you want to assign the station to for more than 2 seconds. The preset number will flash for a while to confirm it’s stored.

Tuning to a Preset Station:

1. Select the desired band (FM1, FM2, FM3, or AM).

2. Press the number button (1 – 6) corresponding to the stored station you want to listen to.

1. Press the eject button (▲) to open the control panel, revealing the loading slot.

2. Insert a disc into the loading slot. The unit will draw the disc in, the control panel will close, and CD play will start automatically.

By default, all tracks on the disc will be played repeatedly (All Track Repeat Play) until you stop playback.

To stop play and eject the disc:

Press the eject button (▲). CD play stops, the control panel moves down, and the disc is automatically ejected. If an ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, it will be re-inserted to protect it from dust, but playback will not start.

Note: Do not insert 8 cm (mini) discs into the loading slot.

Go to the Next or Previous Track:

Press the up or down arrow buttons (◄◄ / ►►) briefly.

Fast-forward or Reverse the Track:

Press and hold the up or down arrow buttons (◄◄ / ►►).

Go to a Specific Track Directly:

• To select a track from 1 – 6: Press the corresponding number button (1 – 6) briefly.

• To select a track from 7 – 12: Press and hold the corresponding number button (1 for 7, 2 for 8, etc.) for more than one second.

View CD Text Information:

If you are playing a CD Text disc, press the DISP (D) button to cycle through the available information, such as Disc Title/Performer and Track Title/Performer.

To access playback modes, press the MODE (M) button while a disc is playing to enter functions mode.

Random Play (RND):

Press the RND button (number 6) to turn random play on or off. When on, all tracks on the disc will be played in a random order.

Repeat Play (RPT):

Press the RPT button (number 5). This toggles “One Track Repeat Play” on and off. When on, the current track will repeat. When off, the unit defaults to “All Track Repeat Play,” where the entire disc repeats.

Intro Scan (INT):

Press the INT button (number 4) to turn intro scan on or off. When on, the unit plays the first 15 seconds of each track sequentially.

To Prohibit Disc Ejection (Lock):

While pressing the SEL (select) button, press and hold the eject button (▲) for more than 2 seconds. “NO EJECT” will flash on the display for about 5 seconds, and the disc will be locked.

To Cancel the Prohibition (Unlock):

While pressing the SEL (select) button, press and hold the eject button (▲) for more than 2 seconds again. “EJECT OK” will flash for about 5 seconds, and the disc will be unlocked.

Playing an MP3 Disc:

Insert an MP3 disc into the loading slot. The unit will display “FILE CHECK” as it scans the disc. Once complete, playback will start automatically from the first file in the first directory.

Navigating Files:

• Skip/Fast-Forward/Reverse File: Use the arrow buttons (◄◄ / ►►) the same way as for an audio CD (press briefly to skip, press and hold to fast-forward/reverse).

Navigating Directories:

• Go to a Directory Directly (Control Panel): To directly select directories 1-12, the directories must have 2-digit numbers at the beginning of their names (e.g., “01 FOLDER”). Press number buttons 1-6 briefly for directories 01-06. Press and hold number buttons 1-6 for more than one second for directories 07-12.

• Skip to Next/Previous Directory (Control Panel): Press the MODE (M) button, then briefly press the up arrow (►► ∧) to go to the next directory or the down arrow (◄◄ ∨) to go to the previous directory.

• Navigate Directories (Remote Controller):

– Press and hold PRESET ▲/▼ to skip to the next/previous directory.

– Press briefly DISC ▲/▼ to move to directories on an upper or lower hierarchy level.

– Press R•D to go directly back to the root directory.

Changing Display Information:

While playing an MP3 file, press the DISP (D) button repeatedly to cycle through available information like Directory Name, File Name, Album Name/Performer (ID3 Tag), Track Title (ID3 Tag), and elapsed time.

To access MP3 playback modes, press the MODE (M) button while an MP3 disc is playing.

Basic Sound Adjustment:

Press the SEL (select) button repeatedly to cycle through the adjustable items: FADER, BAL (Balance), WOOFER (Subwoofer), VOL ADJ (Volume Adjust), and VOLUME. Turn the control dial to change the setting for the selected item.

Reinforcing Bass Sound (Extended Bass):

Press the E-BASS (EB) button to turn Extended Bass on or off. To adjust the level, select VOL ADJ in the SEL menu and use the control dial.

Adjusting Input Level for Each Source:

To match the volume level of different sources (e.g., CD, AUX) to the FM radio level, you can adjust the input level. Select a source other than FM, press SEL until “VOL ADJ” appears, and turn the control dial to adjust its level from -12 to +12. This setting will be stored for that source.

Selecting a Preset Sound Mode (EQ):

1. Press the EQ button to activate or deactivate the sound mode.

2. When activated, turn the control dial to select a preset mode suitable for the music genre (e.g., FLAT, HARD ROCK, POP, JAZZ, USER 1, USER 2, USER 3, etc.).

Storing a Sound Mode for Each Source (EQ Link):

To have a specific EQ mode activate automatically with a specific source, enter the PSM menu (press and hold SEL), select “EQ LINK,” and set it to “ON.” The last selected EQ mode will then be stored for the current source.

Storing Your Own Sound Adjustments (USER 1/2/3):

1. Press EQ to activate a sound mode.

2. Select any sound mode to start with.

3. Press SEL (select) to enter adjustment mode. The last adjusted frequency and its level appear.

4. Use the arrow buttons to select a frequency (70 Hz, 150 Hz, 400 Hz, 1 kHz, 2.4 kHz, 6 kHz, 12.5 kHz).

5. Turn the control dial to adjust the level of that frequency from “-05” to “+05”.

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for other frequencies.

7. Press the EQ button to select one of the user sound modes (USER 1, USER 2, or USER 3) where you want to store your settings.

8. Press SEL (select) to store the adjustments.

1. Press and hold the SEL (select) button for more than 2 seconds. One of the PSM (Preferred Setting Mode) items will appear on the display.

2. Use the arrow buttons to select the PSM item you want to adjust.

3. Turn the control dial to change the setting of the selected item.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for any other items.

5. Press the SEL button to finish and exit the PSM menu.

The following table shows the available PSM settings:

You can assign names to radio stations, CDs, and external components. You can assign up to 11 characters for stations and external components, and up to 32 characters for up to 40 CDs.

1. Select the source you want to assign a name to.

2. Press and hold the SEL (select) button for more than 2 seconds while also pressing the DISP (D) button.

3. A flashing cursor “!!” will appear. Press DISP (D) to select the character set: Capital letters (A) → Small letters (a) → Numbers and symbols (@).

4. Turn the control dial to select a character.

5. Press the arrow buttons (◄◄ / ►►) to move the cursor to the next or previous character position.

6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 to input the entire name.

7. Press the SEL button while the last selected character is flashing to finish the procedure.

To Adjust the Control Panel Angle:

Press the ATT (angle/attenuator) button. Each press changes the panel angle, cycling through four positions.

To Detach the Control Panel:

1. Be sure to turn off the power and return the panel to its original, flat position.

2. Press the control panel release button (🡄).

3. The control panel will unlock and come out toward you.

4. Move the control panel to the right, then pull it out of the unit.

5. Store the detached panel in the provided case.

To Attach the Control Panel:

1. Insert the left side of the control panel into the groove on the panel holder.

2. Press the right side of the control panel to fix it to the panel holder.

The JVC KD-SH909 can connect to two external components: one via the MP3 INPUT jack on the front panel, and another via the LINE IN plugs on the rear.

To Play an External Component:

1. Ensure the respective input is enabled in the PSM settings (“AUX IN” for the front jack, “LINE IN” for the rear plugs).

2. Connect your component (e.g., MP3 player, MD player).

3. Press the SOURCE button repeatedly to select “AUX INPUT” or “LINE INPUT”.

4. Turn on your connected component and start playing the source.

Operating a Connected JVC DVD Player or VCR:

If you connect a JVC DVD player or VCR to the LINE IN plugs, you can use the number buttons on the control panel for basic operations. First, select the target component (DVD or VCR) in the “KEY SEL” PSM setting.

• For DVD player: ⏻ (Power), ► (Playback), ►► (Next Chapter/Fast-forward), ◄◄ (Previous Chapter/Reverse), ■ (Stop).

• For VCR: ⏻ (Power), ► (Playback), ►► (Fast-wind), ◄◄ (Rewind), ■ (Stop).

Playing CDs:

Select “CD CHANGER” or “CD CH” as the source. Playback will begin automatically. If “NO DISC” appears, there are no discs in the magazine or they are inserted upside down.

Playback Control:

• Skip/Fast-Forward/Reverse Track: Use the arrow buttons (◄◄ / ►►) the same as for a single CD.

• Go to a Particular Disc Directly: Press the number button (1-6) briefly to select discs 1-6. Press and hold the number button (1-6) for more than a second to select discs 7-12.

Playback Modes (Random, Repeat, Intro Scan):

Enter functions mode by pressing MODE (M), then select the desired mode. The functions are similar to single CD and MP3 modes, but apply to the discs in the changer:

• RANDOM1: Random tracks on the current disc, then moves to the next disc.

• RANDOM2: Random tracks from all discs in the magazine.

• REPEAT1: Repeats the current track.

• REPEAT2: Repeats all tracks on the current disc.

• INTRO1: Plays the first 15 seconds of all tracks on all inserted discs.

• INTRO2: Plays the first 15 seconds of the first track on each inserted disc.

How to handle discs:

• Always hold discs by the edges; do not touch the recording surface.

• When removing a disc from its case, press the center holder.

• Store discs in their cases after use.

To keep discs clean:

• If a disc becomes dirty, wipe it with a soft cloth in a straight line from the center to the edge.

• Do not use solvents like record cleaner, spray, thinner, or benzine.

To play new discs:

• New discs may have rough spots on the edges. To remove them, rub the edges with a pencil or ball-point pen.

Moisture Condensation:

• If moisture condenses on the lens inside the unit (e.g., after starting the car heater), the unit may malfunction. Eject the disc and leave the unit turned on for a few hours until the moisture evaporates.

CD-R/CD-RW Cautions:

• User-edited CD-Rs and CD-RWs must be “finalized” to be played back.

• Some discs may not play due to their characteristics, damage, or a dirty lens.

• CD-Rs and CD-RWs are sensitive to high temperatures and humidity; do not leave them in your car.

If sound is sometimes interrupted:

• The contents on the disc may not be compatible with the unit. Try changing the disc.

• You may be driving on rough roads, causing mistracking. Stop playback while driving on such roads.

• The disc may be scratched. Try changing the disc.

If sound cannot be heard from the speakers:

• Check that all cords and connections are correct and secure.

• The volume level may be set to the minimum. Adjust it to an optimum level.

• Check the “P.AMP SW” setting in the PSM menu. If you are not using external amplifiers, it should be set to “ON”.

Unit or CD changer does not work at all:

• The built-in microcomputer may have malfunctioned due to noise. Press the reset button on the control panel.

CD-R/CD-RW cannot be played back or tracks cannot be skipped:

• The disc is not finalized. You must finalize the CD-R/CD-RW with the component you used for recording.

“NO DISC” or “EJECT ERR” appears and disc cannot be ejected:

• The unit may be functioning incorrectly. While pressing the eject button (▲), press and hold the up arrow (►►) for more than 2 seconds. Be careful not to drop the disc when it ejects.

“ERR 00” to “ERR 44” appears on the display:

• There is something blocking the control movement. Press the reset button on the front panel.

For CD Changer errors (“RESET 1” – “RESET 8”):

• Check that the connection to the CD changer is correct and secure, then press the reset button on the CD changer itself.

SSM (Strong-station Sequential Memory) automatic preset does not work:

• The radio signals in your area are too weak for the automatic search. You will need to store stations manually.

Static noise while listening to the radio:

• The antenna is not connected firmly. Check the antenna connection and ensure it is secure.

Disc cannot be played back:

• MP3 files must have the extension code “.mp3” in their file names.

• The disc must be recorded in a format compliant with ISO 9660 Level 1, Level 2, or Joliet.

Files skip, or “00’00” appears and playback stops:

• The files may be encoded in MPEG1/2 Audio Layer 1 or Layer 2 format. The JVC KD-SH909 only supports Layer 3. Insert a disc that contains files encoded in Layer 3 format.

A longer readout time is required (“FILE CHECK” flashes):

• This is caused by the complexity of the directory and file structure on the disc. To reduce readout time, do not use too many hierarchies and directories, and do not record other types of audio tracks along with MP3 files.

“MP3” flashes on the display:

• The current directory you have selected contains no MP3 files. Select another directory.

“NO FILES” appears, then the disc ejects:

• There are no MP3 files in this disc at all. Insert a disc that contains MP3 files.

Correct characters are not displayed (e.g., album name):

• The unit can only display a specific set of alphabets (A-Z, a-z), numbers, and symbols for ID3v1 tags.

The fuse blows:

• Check that the red and black power leads are connected correctly.

Power cannot be turned on:

• Check that the yellow power lead is connected.

Sound is distorted or the unit becomes hot:

• Check if the speaker output lead is grounded.

• Check if the “-” terminals of the left and right speakers are grounded in common. These conditions can cause distortion or overheating and should be corrected.
