• If ever in doubt about the installation, operation or safety of this equipment, consult your dealer.

• Handle all glass panels or covers with care.

• Never operate this equipment if it appears damaged or operates abnormally. Turn the power off, disconnect the main power plug and consult your dealer.

• Never remove any affixed panels or covers. Doing so may result in electrical shock.

• Never leave this equipment operating unattended unless otherwise specifically stated that it is designed to do so or in standby mode. Only use the designated power switch to turn off the power and ensure that all potential users are instructed how to do so. Make special arrangements for infirm or handicapped persons.

• Never watch TV while operating a motor vehicle. It is illegal to watch TV while driving.

• Never listen to headphones at high volume. Doing so may damage your hearing.

• Never obstruct the ventilation of this equipment. Doing so may cause overheating and result in a malfunction or damage.

• Never use makeshift stands or attempt to affix legs with wood screws. When using a manufacturer’s approved stand or legs, use only the fixtures provided and follow the installation instructions.

• Never allow this equipment to be exposed to rain or moisture.

• Never allow anyone, especially children, to insert anything into an opening in the case. Doing so may result in a fatal electrical shock.

• Never guess or take chances with electrical equipment of any kind. It is better to be safe than sorry.

If you need to fit a new mains plug, follow these instructions. The wires in the mains lead on this product are coloured in accordance with the following code:

Blue: Neutral

Brown: Live

As these colours may not correspond with the coloured marking identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows:

The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter N or coloured black.

The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter L or coloured red.

Important: Do not make any connection to the larger terminal which is marked with the letter E or by the safety earth symbol or coloured green or green-and-yellow.

If in doubt – consult a competent electrician.

To replace the fuse, open the fuse compartment with a blade screwdriver, and replace the fuse. When replacing the fuse, use only a correctly rated approved type and always re-fit the fuse cover.

WARNING: TO PREVENT FIRE OR SHOCK HAZARD, DO NOT EXPOSE THIS APPLIANCE TO RAIN OR MOISTURE. Always use the provided AC adapter and power cord.

Handling Warnings:

• Fingers may be trapped under the TV causing injuries. Hold the TV at the bottom in the middle, and do not allow it to tilt up or down.

• The TV may fall causing injuries. Hold the bottom of the stand with your hand and tilt the TV up and down.

• Do not allow children to hang from the TV, place their elbows on the TV or lean against the TV. Doing so may cause the TV to fall over and lead to injuries.

Power Cautions:

• To avoid electric shock or damage, first firmly insert the small end of the power cord into the AC Adapter unit until it is no longer wobbly, and then plug the larger end of the power cord into an AC outlet.

• Operate only from the power source specified (AC 100 – 240 V, 50/60 Hz) on the AC adapter.

• Avoid damaging the AC plug, AC adapter and power cord.

• When you are not using this unit for a long period of time, it is recommended that you disconnect the power cord from the main outlet.

Caution on Heating of AC Adapter:

• In use, the AC adapter will get hot on the surface of the case. This is normal, not defective.

• Do not cover the AC adapter with any material while it is in operation.

LCDs use collections of fine pixels to display images. While more than 99.99% of these pixels will function correctly, please understand that a very small number of pixels may not light up or may remain lit all the time. This is a characteristic of the technology and not a defect.

To ensure proper ventilation, avoid improper installation. When installing the JVC LT-17E31 BJG, maintain the following minimum distances between the set and the wall, as well as inside a tightly enclosed area or piece of furniture:

• 150 mm from the top.

• 200 mm from the left and right sides.

• 50 mm from the back.

Keeping to these minimum distance guidelines will ensure safe operation.

The surface of the TV screen is easily damaged. Be very careful with it when handling the TV. Should the TV screen become soiled, wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Never rub it forcefully. Never use any cleaner or detergent on it.

The screen is coated with a special thin film to reduce reflection. If this film is damaged, uneven colors, discoloration, scratches, and other problems that cannot be repaired may occur. Pay attention to the following when handling the screen:

• Do not use glue or adhesive tape on the screen.

• Do not write on the screen.

• Do not allow the screen to come in contact with any hard objects.

• Do not allow condensation to form on the screen.

• Do not use alcohol, thinner, benzene or other solvents on the screen.

• Do not rub the screen hard.

Failure to take the following precautions may cause damage to the television or remote control:

• DO NOT block the TV’s ventilation openings or holes. (If the ventilation openings or holes are blocked by a newspaper or cloth, etc., the heat may not be able to get out.)

• DO NOT place anything on top of the TV. (such as cosmetics or medicines, flower vases, potted plants, cups, etc.)

• DO NOT allow objects or liquid into the cabinet openings. (If water or liquid is allowed to enter this equipment, fire or electric shock may be caused.)

• DO NOT place any naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, on the TV.

• DO NOT subject the TV to direct sunlight.

The JVC LT-17E31 BJG comes with a Table Top Stand already attached. This stand can be used to adjust the direction of the TV screen 5° up, 10° down, and 20° to the left or right.

Tilt the TV up and down:

While holding the bottom of the stand with one hand, use your other hand to hold the middle of the top of the TV and slowly tilt the TV up and down.

• As a safety measure, the stand is constructed so that it requires a certain amount of force to tilt the TV.

Rotate the TV to the left and right:

While holding the bottom of the stand with one hand, use your other hand to hold the edge of the panel and slowly adjust the direction of the TV screen.

Use two AA/R6 dry cell batteries. Insert the batteries from the – end, making sure the + and – polarities are correct.

• Follow the warnings printed on the batteries.

• Battery life is about six months to one year, depending on your frequency of use.

• The batteries supplied are only for setting up and testing your TV; please replace them as soon as you need to.

• If the remote control does not work properly, replace the batteries.

There are connection terminals behind the covers on the rear of the TV. Remove the cover before connecting a DVD or VCR. The covers can be removed by removing the hook at the top and then pulling out while lifting slightly. To replace the covers, first connect the hook at the bottom of the cover to the TV and then insert the hook at the top.

• Leave the covers off if they do not fit properly. Do not force them to replace them, as this may cause damage to the connection cables and the covers.

• Leave these covers off when mounting the TV on a wall.

For connecting an aerial and a Video Cassette Recorder (VCR):

1. Connect your main aerial cable (75-ohm Coaxial Cable) to the “To Aerial Input” on your VCR.

2. Connect a second aerial cable from the “To Aerial Output” on your VCR to the aerial input on the back of the JVC LT-17E31 BJG.

3. Use a 21-pin SCART cable to connect the VCR’s AV OUT to the EXT-1 or EXT-2 terminal on the TV.

If you are not connecting a VCR, simply connect the main aerial cable directly to the aerial input on the TV.

If you are using an AC adapter, follow these steps:

1. Connect the power cord to the AC adapter, and then connect the AC adapter’s plug to the DC input on the TV.

2. Connect the other end of the power cord (mains plug) to an AC outlet.

Caution: Operate only from the power source specified (AC 100 – 240 V, 50/60 Hz) on the unit. To completely disconnect the TV from the power supply, remove the AC plug from the outlet.

When the TV is first turned on, it enters the initial setting mode. Follow these steps:

1. Make sure to set the VCR/TV/DVD switch on the remote control to the TV position.

2. Press the ⏻/I button on the remote control. After a short interval, the power lamp will change from red to green. Ensure the AC plug is connected to an AC outlet.

3. The AUTO PROGRAM menu will appear on screen.

4. Press the ▼/▲ buttons to highlight LANGUAGE.

5. Press the ◄/► buttons to choose ENGLISH. The on-screen display will then be in English.

6. Press the ▼/▲ buttons to highlight COUNTRY and use the ◄/► buttons to choose the country where you are.

7. Press the ▼/▲ buttons to choose A.P.S. (Auto Program System), then press the ► button.

8. Press the OK button to start A.P.S. The TV will begin searching for and storing available channels. The message “A.P.S. IS RUNNING” will be displayed. To cancel, press the MENU button.

After the TV channels have been registered, the PROGRAM menu appears, and the initial settings are complete.

You can operate the TV using the buttons on the side panel:

Turn the TV on from standby mode: Press the ⏻ button or the P ∨/∧ buttons.

Choose a TV channel: Press the P ∨/∧ buttons to choose a programme number or an EXT terminal.

Watch images from external devices: Press the TV/AV button to choose a TV/AV terminal (EXT-1, EXT-2, etc.).

Adjust the volume: Press the -/+ buttons.

Using the Menu: Press the MENU button to open the on-screen menu. Use the P ∨/∧ buttons for up/down navigation (▼/▲) and the -/+ buttons for left/right navigation (◄/►). Press the TV/AV (OK) button to confirm selections.

There are two ways to select a channel using the remote control:

Use the number buttons:

Enter the programme number of the channel using the number buttons. For example:

• For PR 6, press 6.

• For PR 12, press 1 and then 2.

Use the P ∨/∧ buttons:

Press the P ∨/∧ buttons to cycle through the stored channels.

To adjust the volume:

Press the -/+ buttons on the remote control. The volume indicator will appear on the screen, and the volume will change as you press the buttons.

To mute the sound:

Press the 🔇 (muting) button to turn off the sound. Pressing the 🔇 (muting) button again will restore the sound to its previous volume level.

You can display the source information and current time on the screen by pressing the ⓘ (information) button on the remote control. Pressing the button repeatedly will cycle through the display options: information with time, information only, and no display.

The source type can be TV, EXT-1, EXT-2, EXT-2 S, EXT-3, EXT-3 S, or PC.

You can change the screen size according to the picture aspect ratio. Press the ZOOM button on the remote control to cycle through the following modes:

• AUTO: When a WSS (Wide Screen Signalling) signal is detected, the TV automatically changes to 16:9 ZOOM or FULL mode.

• REGULAR: Displays a normal 4:3 aspect ratio picture in its original shape.

• PANORAMIC: Stretches the left and right sides of a 4:3 picture to fill the screen, making it appear less unnatural.

• 14:9 ZOOM: Zooms up a wide picture (14:9 aspect ratio) to the upper and lower limits of the screen.

• 16:9 ZOOM: Zooms up a wide picture (16:9 aspect ratio) to the full screen.

• 16:9 ZOOM SUBTITLE: Zooms up a 16:9 picture with subtitles to the full screen.

• FULL: Uniformly stretches a 4:3 picture to fill the wide TV screen.

To adjust the vertical position of the picture in certain zoom modes, press the ZOOM button, then press OK. While the indicator is displayed, use the ∨/∧ buttons to change the position of the picture. This adjustment is not available in REGULAR or FULL mode.

The Sleep Timer can turn the TV off for you automatically. To set it, press the 🕒 button on the remote control. Each press will program the TV to turn off in intervals of 10 minutes, for a total time of up to 120 minutes.

You can choose one of four PICTURE MODES to adjust the picture settings automatically. Press the PICTURE button on the remote control to cycle through the options:

• BRIGHT: Heightens contrast and sharpness.

• STANDARD: Standardizes picture adjustment.

• SOFT: Softens contrast and sharpness.

• MANUAL: User-defined settings.

Basic Operation:

1. Choose a TV channel with a Teletext broadcast.

2. Make sure the VCR/TV/DVD switch on the remote is set to the TV position.

3. Press the ⌕ (Text) button to display the Teletext. Pressing it again cycles through modes (e.g., text over picture).

4. Choose a Teletext page by pressing the P ∨/∧ buttons, number buttons, or colour buttons.

5. To return to the TV mode, press the ⌕ (Text) button again.

Teletext Features:

• Hold: Press the ⌕ (Hold) button to freeze the current page on the screen. Press it again to cancel.

• Sub-page: For pages with sub-pages, press the ⌕ button to view sub-page numbers, then use the number buttons to select one.

• Reveal: Press the ⌕ (Reveal) button to show hidden text, such as quiz answers. Press again to hide it.

• Size: Press the ⌕ (Size) button to double the height of the Teletext display.

• Index: Press the ⌕ (Index) button to return to the index page (usually page 100).

• Cancel: To search for a page while watching TV, enter the page number, then press the ⌕ (Cancel) button. The TV program appears, and the page number is shown when found. Press the ⌕ (Cancel) button again to view the page.

Basic Operation with Remote Control:

1. Press the MENU button to display the main menu.

2. Press the ◄/► and ▼/▲ buttons to choose a menu title (e.g., PICTURE, SOUND), and press the OK button to enter that menu.

3. Press the ▼/▲ buttons to choose a function within the menu.

4. Press the ◄/► buttons to change the setting of that function.

5. Press the MENU button to complete the setting and exit the menu. To return to the previous menu, press the BACK button.

Operation with Buttons on the TV:

You can also navigate the menus using the buttons on the front panel of the TV. Use the MENU button to open/close menus, the OK button to select, the P ∨/∧ buttons for up/down navigation, and the VOL -/+ buttons for left/right adjustment.

1. Press the MENU button on your remote.

2. Select PICTURE and press OK.

3. You can now adjust the following settings using the ▼/▲ buttons to select and ◄/► buttons to adjust:

• PICTURE MODE: Choose from BRIGHT, STANDARD, SOFT, or MANUAL.

• CONTRAST: Adjust the picture contrast (lower/higher).

• BRIGHT-1: Adjust the picture brightness (darker/brighter).

• SHARP: Adjust the picture sharpness (softer/sharper).

• COLOUR: Adjust the picture colour intensity (lighter/deeper).

• HUE: Adjust the picture tint (reddish/greenish). This is available for NTSC signals.

• BRIGHT-2: Adjust the back light (darker/lighter).

• COLOUR TEMP.: Select the white balance of the picture (COOL, NORMAL, WARM).

• RESET: Reset all picture settings to their default values.

1. Press the MENU button on your remote.

2. Select SOUND and press OK.

3. You can now adjust the following settings using the ▼/▲ buttons to select and ◄/► buttons to adjust:

• BASS: Adjust the low tone of the sound (weaker/stronger).

• TREBLE: Adjust the high tone of the sound (weaker/stronger).

• BALANCE: Adjust the volume balance between the left and right speakers.

• HYPER SOUND: Turn this function ON to enjoy a “live” surround sound effect, or OFF for standard sound.

1. Press the MENU button on your remote.

2. Select FEATURES and press OK.

3. You can now adjust the following settings:

• BLUE BACK: Set to ON to automatically change to a blue screen and mute the sound if the signal is weak or absent. Set to OFF to disable this.

• CHILD LOCK: When set to ON, the buttons on the TV will be locked except for Power ON/OFF. The TV can only be controlled by the remote controller.

• EXT-2 OUTPUT: Choose a signal source (TV or EXT-1) to be output from the EXT-2 terminal. This is useful for recording from one source to another.

1. Press the MENU button and select INSTALL, then press OK.

2. Select MANUAL and press OK.

3. Select PROGRAM: Use the ◄/► buttons to choose the program number you want to store the channel on.

4. Select BAND: Choose the band type, CH(AIR) or CC(CATV).

5. Select CHANNEL: Choose the channel number.

6. Select COLOUR SYSTEM: Choose AUTO, PAL, or SECAM.

7. Select SOUND SYSTEM: Choose AUTO, B/G, D/K, L, or I.

8. Select SEARCH: Use the ◄/► buttons to search for a serviceable TV channel.

9. FINE TUNING: If reception is poor, use the ◄/► buttons to fine-tune the program.

10. Select STORE: Press the ◄/► buttons to store the manual setting.

After running Auto Program, you can edit the channel list.

1. Press the MENU button, select INSTALL, then select PROGRAM and press OK.

2. The program list will be displayed. Use the ▼/▲ and ◄/► buttons to highlight the channel you want to edit.

You can now use the coloured buttons on the remote for different functions:

• NAME (Red button): Select a channel, press the red button. Use the ▼/▲ and ◄/► buttons to select characters and create a name for the channel (e.g., “BBC1”). Press the red button again to store the name.

• INSERT (Green button): Select a channel you want to move. Press the green button. Use the ▼/▲ and ◄/► buttons to choose a new program number for it. Press the green button again to insert the channel into the new position.

• DELETE (Yellow button): Select a channel you want to delete. Press the yellow button twice to delete it from the list.

• A.P.S. (Blue button): Press this to start the Auto Program process again.

When in PC mode, you can access the PC MENU to adjust settings.

PC PICTURE POSITION Menu:

• AUTO SETUP: Automatically adjusts picture position, clock, and phase for an optimized picture.

• H POSITION: Manually adjust the horizontal position.

• V POSITION: Manually adjust the vertical position.

• CLOCK: Fine-tune the picture clock.

• PHASE: Fine-tune the picture phase.

• RESET: Reset all PC position settings to default.

PC PICTURE Menu:

• CONTRAST: Adjust the picture contrast.

• BRIGHT-2: Adjust the back light brightness.

• COLOUR TEMP.: Choose from COOL, NORMAL, WARM, or MANUAL.

• R / G / B: In MANUAL Colour Temp. mode, adjust the Red, Green, and Blue colour components individually.

• RESET: Reset PC picture settings to default.

SOUND Menu (PC Mode):

Adjust BASS, TREBLE, BALANCE, and HYPER SOUND as you would in TV mode.

Note: The resolution and frequencies displayed on the screen may not be exactly the same as this list. The Auto SETUP function will work automatically when you change the resolution of PC mode.

If you cannot turn on the TV:

• Check if the AC plug on the power cord from the TV is connected to the AC outlet.

• Make sure to set the VCR/TV/DVD switch on the remote control to the TV position. You cannot turn the TV on when the switch is set to the VCR or DVD position.

If you cannot turn off the TV:

• Make sure to set the VCR/TV/DVD switch on the remote to the TV position. You cannot turn the TV off when the switch is set to the VCR or DVD position.

• Have you chosen a TV channel with very poor reception? If so, the BLUE BACK function may be activated, causing the screen to become blue and the sound to be muted. To view the channel anyway, go to the FEATURES menu and set the BLUE BACK function to OFF.

• If the SOUND SYSTEM setting for a TV channel is incorrect, it may prevent the sound from being issued. Go to the INSTALL > MANUAL menu to try to change the SOUND SYSTEM setting.

• If noise (snow) totally blocks the picture, check your aerial and aerial cable connections. Ensure the cable isn’t damaged and the aerial is pointing in the right direction.

• If you see stripes or noise, move other electronic equipment (like amplifiers, computers, or hair dryers) away from the TV, as they may be causing interference.

• If you see double-pictures (ghosting), this may be due to signals reflecting from mountains or buildings. Try to change the aerial’s direction or replace it with one with better directionality.

• Check if the COLOUR and BRIGHT settings have been adjusted properly. Use the PICTURE menu to adjust them.

• Have the batteries of the remote control worn out? Replace them with new batteries.

• Are you using the remote from the sides, rear, or more than seven metres away from the TV? Use the remote control from the front of the TV and within seven metres.

• If you are viewing a Teletext programme, you cannot operate the menus. Press the ⌕ button to return to the ordinary TV programme, and then try operating the menus.

• If the TV suddenly stops responding, disconnect the power cord from the AC outlet, then plug it back in. If the TV returns to a normal state, it is not a failure.

When the correct picture is not displayed on screen, the following error messages may appear:

• NO SIGNAL – The TV has not received a signal from the PC. You may need to check that your PC is working correctly.

• CABLE NO INPUT – The cable is not connected correctly. Ensure that the cable is connected correctly.

• OUT OF RANGE – The picture resolution is out of the supported range. Ensure that the PC picture resolution is set to a supported value.
