• Never leave this equipment operating unattended unless otherwise specifically stated that it is designed to do so or in standby mode. Only use the designated power switch to turn off the power and ensure that all potential users are instructed how to do so. Make special arrangements for infirm or handicapped persons.

• Never watch TV while operating a motor vehicle. It is illegal to watch TV while driving.

• Never listen to headphones at high volume. Doing so may damage your hearing.

• Never obstruct the ventilation of this equipment. Doing so may cause overheating and result in a malfunction or damage.

• Never use makeshift stands or attempt to affix legs with wood screws. When using a manufacturer’s approved stand or legs, use only the fixtures provided and follow the installation instructions.

• Never allow this equipment to be exposed to rain or moisture.

• Never allow anyone, especially children, to insert anything into an opening in the case. Doing so may result in a fatal electrical shock.

• Never guess or take chances with electrical equipment of any kind. It is better to be safe than sorry.

If you need to fit a new mains plug, follow the instructions below:

Important: Do not make any connection to the larger terminal which is marked with the letter E or by the safety earth symbol or coloured green or green-and-yellow.

The wires in the mains lead on this product are coloured in accordance with the following code:

• Blue: Neutral

• Brown: Live

As these colours may not correspond with the coloured marking identifying the terminals in your plug proceed as follows:

• The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter N or coloured black.

• The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter L or coloured red.

When replacing the fuse, use only a correctly rated approved type and always re-fit the fuse cover.

How to replace the fuse:

Open the fuse compartment with a blade screwdriver, and replace the fuse.

If in doubt – consult a competent electrician.

WARNING: TO PREVENT FIRE OR SHOCK HAZARD, DO NOT EXPOSE THIS APPLIANCE TO RAIN OR MOISTURE.

Always use the provided AC adapter and power cord.

Handling Warnings:

• Fingers may be trapped under the TV causing injuries. Hold the TV at the bottom in the middle, and do not allow it to tilt up or down.

• The TV may fall causing injuries. Hold the bottom of the stand with your hand and tilt the TV up and down.

• Do not allow children to hang from the TV, place their elbows on the TV or lean against the TV. Doing so may cause the TV to fall over and lead to injuries.

AC Adapter Cautions:

• To avoid electric shock or damage to the unit, first firmly insert the small end of the power cord into the AC Adapter unit until it is no longer wobbly, and then plug the larger end of the power cord into an AC outlet.

• Operate only from the power source specified (AC 100 – 240 V, 50/60 Hz) on the AC adapter.

• Avoid damaging the AC plug, AC adapter and power cord.

• In use, the AC adapter will get hot on the surface of the case. This is normal, not defective.

• When you are not using this unit for a long period of time, it is recommended that you disconnect the power cord from the main outlet.

• Do not cover the AC adapter with any material while it is in operation.

To ensure proper ventilation, you must maintain certain minimum distances between the TV and surrounding surfaces. Avoid improper installation and never position the unit where good ventilation is impossible.

When installing this TV, distance recommendations must be maintained between the set and the wall, as well as inside a tightly enclosed area or piece of furniture. Keep to the minimum distance guidelines shown for safe operation:

• Left and Right Sides: 150 mm

• Top: 200 mm

• Back: 50 mm

The surface of the TV screen is easily damaged. Be very careful with it when handling the TV. Should the TV screen become soiled, wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Never rub it forcefully. Never use any cleaner or detergent on it.

The screen is coated with a special thin film to reduce reflection. If this film is damaged, uneven colors, discoloration, scratches, and other problems that cannot be repaired may occur. Pay attention to the following when handling the screen:

• Do not use glue or adhesive tape on the screen.

• Do not write on the screen.

• Do not allow the screen to come in contact with any hard objects.

• Do not allow condensation to form on the screen.

• Do not use alcohol, thinner, benzene or other solvents on the screen.

• Do not rub the screen hard.

Your JVC LT-17E31 SJG comes with a Table Top Stand already attached, which can be used to adjust the direction of the TV screen.

Tilt the TV up and down (5° up, 10° down):

While holding the bottom of the stand with one hand, use your other hand to hold the middle of the top of the TV and slowly tilt the TV up and down. As a safety measure, the stand is constructed so that it requires a certain amount of force to tilt the TV.

Rotate the TV to the left and right (20° to the left or right):

While holding the bottom of the stand with one hand, use your other hand to hold the edge of the panel and slowly adjust the direction of the TV screen.

1. Use two AA/R6 dry cell batteries.

2. Insert the batteries from the “-” end, making sure the “+” and “-” polarities are correct.

Important Notes:

• Follow the warnings printed on the batteries.

• Battery life is about six months to one year, depending on your frequency of use.

• The batteries supplied are only for setting up and testing your TV; please replace them as soon as you need to.

• If the remote control does not work properly, replace the batteries.

There are connection terminals behind the covers on the rear of the TV. Remove the covers before connecting a DVD or VCR.

The covers can be removed by removing the hook at the top and then pulling out while lifting slightly. To replace the covers, first connect the hook at the bottom of the cover to the TV and then insert the hook at the top.

• Leave the covers off if they do not fit properly. Do not force to replace the covers. Doing so may cause damage to the connection cables and the covers.

• Leave these covers off when mounting the TV on a wall.

To connect your JVC LT-17E31 SJG, please note that connecting cables are not provided. For further details, refer to the manuals provided with the devices to be connected.

If you are connecting a VCR:

1. Connect the aerial cable to the “Aerial Input” on your VCR.

2. Connect a 75-ohm coaxial cable from the “Aerial Output” on your VCR to the aerial input on the TV.

3. Connect a 21-pin SCART cable from the VCR’s AV OUT terminal to the EXT-1 or EXT-2 terminal on the TV.

If you are not connecting a VCR:

1. Connect the 75-ohm coaxial cable from your aerial directly to the aerial input on the TV.

If you are connecting an AC adapter, follow these steps:

1. Connect the small end of the power cord to the AC adapter, and connect the adapter’s built-in cable to the DC input on the TV.

2. Connect the larger plug end of the power cord to an AC outlet.

Caution:

• Operate only from the power source specified (AC 100 – 240 V, 50/60 Hz) on the unit.

• Remove the AC plug from the outlet to completely disconnect the TV from the power supply.

When the TV is first turned on, it enters the initial setting mode. Follow the instructions on the on-screen display to make the initial settings.

1. Make sure to set the VCR/TV/DVD switch on the remote control to the TV position.

2. Press the ⏻/I button on the remote control. After a short interval, the power lamp will change from red to green.

3. The AUTO PROGRAM menu will appear on the screen.

4. Press the ▼/▲ buttons to choose the LANGUAGE.

5. Press the ◄/► buttons to choose ENGLISH. The on-screen display will then be in English.

6. Press the ◄/► and ▼/▲ buttons to choose the country where you are.

7. Press the ▼/▲ buttons to choose A.P.S. (Auto Program System). Then press the ◄/► buttons.

8. Press the OK button to start A.P.S. The TV will automatically search for and store all received TV channels. To cancel this process, press the MENU button.

After the channels have been registered, the PROGRAM menu appears. You can now watch TV or edit the program numbers if desired.

You can control basic functions of your JVC LT-17E31 SJG using the buttons located on the side of the unit.

• Turn the TV on from standby mode: Press the standby button (⏻) or the P ∨/∧ buttons.

• Choose a TV channel: Press the P ∨/∧ buttons to choose a program number or an EXT terminal.

• Watch images from external devices: Press the TV/AV button to cycle through the TV/AV terminals (EXT-1, EXT-2, PC, etc.).

• Adjust the volume: Press the -/+ buttons.

• Use the Menu: Press the MENU button to open the on-screen menu. Use the P ∨/∧ buttons for up/down navigation and the -/+ buttons for left/right navigation. Press the TV/AV (OK) button to confirm selections.

There are two ways to select a channel using the remote control:

Use the number buttons:

Enter the program number of the channel directly using the number buttons (0-9).

• Example for channel 6: Press 6.

• Example for channel 12: Press 1 and then 2.

Use the P ∨/∧ buttons:

Press the P ∨/∧ buttons to cycle up or down through the stored channels.

Adjust the volume:

Press the -/+ buttons on the remote control to adjust the volume. The volume indicator will appear on the screen.

Muting the sound:

Press the Muting button (speaker icon with a line through it) to turn off the sound. Pressing the Muting button again will restore the sound to its previous volume level.

To view content from a connected device like a VCR, DVD player, or game console:

1. Press the AV button on the remote control.

2. Each press of the AV button will cycle through the available external input terminals (e.g., EXT-1, EXT-2, EXT-2 S, EXT-3, EXT-3 S, PC).

3. Stop when the correct input for your device is displayed on the screen.

To use Programme number 0 for a VCR connected only by an aerial cable, you must manually set the VCR RF channel to Programme number 0 in the “MANUAL” install menu.

You can display the source information and current time on the screen by pressing the information button (i) on the remote control. Pressing the button repeatedly will cycle through the display options: source information with time, and no display.

The display will show information such as:

• The source type (e.g., TV, EXT-1, PC)

• The program number and channel name (e.g., 01 BBC)

• The current time

Note: In PC mode, the current time will not be displayed. When watching videos, an incorrect current time may sometimes be displayed.

You can change the screen size according to the picture aspect ratio. Press the ZOOM button on the remote control repeatedly to cycle through the available modes.

• AUTO: Automatically changes the ZOOM mode based on the Wide Screen Signalling (WSS) signal from the broadcast or external device.

• REGULAR: Displays a normal picture in its original 4:3 aspect ratio.

• PANORAMIC: Stretches the left and right sides of a 4:3 picture to fill the screen, making it appear less unnatural than a uniform stretch.

• 14:9 ZOOM: Zooms up a wide picture (14:9 aspect ratio) to the upper and lower limits of the screen.

• 16:9 ZOOM: Zooms up a wide picture (16:9 aspect ratio) to the full screen.

• 16:9 ZOOM SUBTITLE: Zooms up a wide picture (16:9 aspect ratio) with subtitles to the full screen.

• FULL: Uniformly stretches the left and right sides of a normal picture (4:3 aspect ratio) to fill the wide TV screen.

Adjusting the visible area of the picture:

If subtitles or parts of the picture are cut off, you can adjust the vertical position.

1. Press the ZOOM button to display the ZOOM menu.

2. Press the OK button to display the ZOOM mode indicator.

3. While the indicator is displayed, press the ∨/∧ buttons to change the position of the picture. (This is not available in REGULAR or FULL mode).

The Sleep Timer can turn the TV off for you automatically after a set period. To set the sleep timer, press the sleep timer button (clock icon) on the remote control. Each press will cycle through the available times in intervals of 10 minutes, up to a total time of 120 minutes.

The remote control for your JVC LT-17E31 SJG can operate a JVC brand VCR or DVD player.

1. Set the VCR/TV/DVD switch to the VCR or DVD position:

• VCR: When you are using a VCR, set the switch to the VCR position. You can turn the VCR on or off with the ⏻/I (Standby) button.

• DVD: When you are using a DVD player, set the switch to the DVD position. You can turn the DVD player on or off with the ⏻/I (Standby) button.

2. Press the VCR/DVD Control Buttons to control your player:

Use the playback control buttons (play, stop, pause, etc.) on the remote. Pressing a button that looks the same as the device’s original remote control button will have the same effect.

Important:

• If your device is not made by JVC, these buttons will not work.

• Even if your device is made by JVC, some buttons may not work depending on the model.

• Set the VCR/TV/DVD switch back to the TV position when you want to turn the TV on or off.

Basic Operation:

1. Choose a TV channel with a teletext broadcast.

2. Make sure to set the VCR/TV/DVD switch on the remote to the TV position.

3. Press the Text button (page icon) to display the teletext. Pressing it again cycles through modes (e.g., TV and Text mixed, Text only) and eventually returns to TV mode.

4. Choose a teletext page by pressing the P ∨/∧ buttons, number buttons, or colour buttons.

Teletext Features:

• Hold: Press the Hold button (hand icon) to freeze the current teletext page on the screen. Press it again to cancel.

• Reveal: Some pages have hidden text (like quiz answers). Press the Reveal button (? icon) to show or hide this text.

• Size: Press the Size button (magnifying glass icon) to double the height of the teletext display for easier reading.

• Sub-page: If a page has sub-pages, press the Sub-page button (page with plus icon) and then use the number buttons to enter the sub-page number (e.g., 0001 for sub-page 1).

• Index: Press the Index button (i) to return to the main index page (usually page 100).

• Cancel: To search for a teletext page while watching TV, enter the page number, then press the Cancel button (X icon). The TV program will appear, and the page number will be displayed in the corner when found. Press the Cancel button again to view the page.

You can operate the TV’s functions using the on-screen menus with either the remote control or the buttons on the TV.

Using the Remote Control:

1. Press the MENU button to display the main menu.

2. Use the ▼/▲ buttons to highlight a menu title (e.g., PICTURE, SOUND).

3. Press the ◄/► or OK button to enter that menu.

4. Inside a menu, use the ▼/▲ buttons to choose a function or setting.

5. Use the ◄/► buttons to change the setting of that function.

6. Press the MENU button to exit the menu, or press the BACK button to return to the previous menu.

Using the Buttons on the TV:

1. Press the MENU button on the TV to display the main menu.

2. Use the P ∨/∧ buttons to select an item (▼/▲).

3. Use the -/+ (volume) buttons to adjust a setting (◄/►).

4. Press the TV/AV (OK) button to confirm a selection.

The menu will disappear after about one minute if no operation is performed.

1. Press the MENU button, select PICTURE, and press OK.

2. From the PICTURE menu, you can adjust the following:

• PICTURE MODE: Choose a preset mode (BRIGHT, STANDARD, SOFT, MANUAL) to quickly adjust the picture. MANUAL allows for user-defined settings.

• Picture Adjustment (in MANUAL mode):

• CONTRAST: Adjusts the difference between light and dark areas.

• BRIGHT-1: Adjusts the overall picture brightness.

• SHARP: Adjusts the sharpness of edges in the picture.

• COLOUR: Adjusts the color intensity.

• HUE: Adjusts the picture tint (reddish/greenish), only available for NTSC signals.

• BRIGHT-2: Adjusts the brightness of the back light.

• COLOUR TEMP.: Adjusts the white balance of the picture. Choose from COOL (bluish white), NORMAL (normal white), or WARM (reddish white).

• RESET: Resets all picture settings to their factory defaults.

1. Press the MENU button, select SOUND, and press OK.

2. From the SOUND menu, you can adjust the following:

• BASS: Adjusts the low tones of the sound (weaker/stronger).

• TREBLE: Adjusts the high tones of the sound (weaker/stronger).

• BALANCE: Adjusts the volume balance between the left and right speakers.

• HYPER SOUND: Turn ON to enjoy a surround sound “live” effect. Turn OFF for standard audio.

1. Press the MENU button, select FEATURES, and press OK.

2. From the FEATURES menu, you can adjust the following:

• BLUE BACK: When set to ON, the TV will automatically change to a blue screen and mute the sound if the signal is weak or absent. Set to OFF to disable this function.

• CHILD LOCK: When set to ON, the buttons on the TV will be locked except for Power ON/OFF. The TV can only be controlled by the remote controller.

• EXT-2 OUTPUT: Allows you to choose which signal source is output from the EXT-2 terminal. This is useful for recording from one source to another (e.g., from EXT-1 to a VCR connected to EXT-2). You can choose between TV or EXT-1.

You can automatically or manually store TV channels. Access these options via MENU > INSTALL.

AUTO PROGRAM (Automatic Tuning):

This function automatically stores all available TV channels.

1. In the INSTALL menu, select PROGRAM and press OK.

2. In the PROGRAM menu, press the blue button for A.P.S. (Auto Program System).

3. Set your LANGUAGE and COUNTRY.

4. Select START and press OK to begin the automatic scan. The TV will find and store all available channels.

MANUAL (Manual Tuning):

This allows you to store a single TV channel.

1. In the INSTALL menu, select MANUAL and press OK.

2. PROGRAM: Select the program number where you want to store the channel.

3. BAND: Choose the band type, CH(AIR) or CC(CATV).

4. CHANNEL: Select the channel number.

5. COLOUR SYSTEM: Usually set to AUTO. Change to PAL or SECAM if you have picture issues.

6. SOUND SYSTEM: Usually set to AUTO. Change if the sound is incorrect for the channel.

7. SEARCH: Use the ◄/► buttons to search for a serviceable TV channel.

8. FINE TUNING: If reception is poor, use the ◄/► buttons to fine-tune the program.

9. STORE: Select and press ◄/► to save the manual setting.

After channels have been stored, you can edit the list. Go to MENU > INSTALL > PROGRAM and press OK.

• NAME (Red Button): Assign a name to a TV channel.

1. Use the ▼/▲ buttons to select the channel you want to name.

2. Press the red button to start the NAME function.

3. Use the ◄/► and ▼/▲ buttons to select characters and edit the name.

4. Select STORE and press the red button to save the name.

• INSERT (Green Button): Change the program number of a TV channel.

1. Use the ▼/▲ buttons to select the channel you want to move.

2. Press the green button to start the INSERT function.

3. Use the ▼/▲ buttons to move the channel to a new program number.

4. Press the green button to insert the channel into its new position.

• DELETE (Yellow Button): Delete a TV channel you do not want to list.

1. Use the ▼/▲ buttons to select the channel you want to delete.

2. Press the yellow button to start the DELETE function.

3. Press the yellow button again to confirm and delete the selected TV channel.

When you switch the TV to PC input, a special PC MENU becomes available.

PC PICTURE POSITION Menu:

• AUTO SETUP: Automatically adjusts picture settings for optimized position, clock, and phase.

• H POSITION: Manually adjust the picture’s horizontal position.

• V POSITION: Manually adjust the picture’s vertical position.

• CLOCK: Fine-tune the picture to remove vertical banding.

• PHASE: Fine-tune the picture to remove shimmer or instability.

• RESET: Resets the PC Picture Position settings to default.

PC PICTURE Menu:

• CONTRAST: Adjust the picture contrast.

• BRIGHT-2: Adjust the back light brightness.

• COLOUR TEMP.: Adjust the white balance (COOL, NORMAL, WARM) or enter MANUAL mode.

• R / G / B (in MANUAL mode): Adjust the Red, Green, and Blue color components individually.

• RESET: Resets the PC Picture settings to default.

SOUND Menu (in PC mode):

• Adjust BASS, TREBLE, BALANCE, and HYPER SOUND as you would in TV mode.

Before connecting any equipment, turn off the TV and all other devices. The JVC LT-17E31 SJG has several terminals for connecting external equipment:

• EXT-1 (SCART): For devices like a VCR, Decoder, or DVD player. Supports Video, Audio L/R, and RGB inputs. Also outputs TV broadcast signals.

• EXT-2 (SCART): For devices like a VCR or DVD player. Supports Video, S-VIDEO, Audio L/R, and RGB inputs. Can also output signals (configurable in the FEATURES menu).

• EXT-3 (Component/S-VIDEO/AV): Located on the side. For devices like a Camcorder or TV game console. Consists of RCA connectors (Video, Audio L/R) and an S-VIDEO connector.

• PC INPUT:

• D-SUB (15 pins): Connect the analog RGB video output from your PC.

• PC AUDIO IN (Stereo mini-jack): Connect the audio output from your PC.

• AUDIO OUT: RCA connectors (Audio L/R) and a subwoofer output for connecting to an external amplifier or speaker system.

• Headphone Jack (Stereo mini-jack): For connecting headphones.

If your television will not turn on, please check the following:

• Is the AC plug on the power cord from the TV connected to the AC outlet?

• Make sure the VCR/TV/DVD switch on the remote control is set to the TV position. You cannot turn the TV on when the switch is set to the VCR or DVD position.

If you experience no picture or no sound, please try these solutions:

• Have you chosen a TV channel with very poor reception? If so, the BLUE BACK function may be activated, causing a blue screen and muted sound. To view the channel anyway, go to the FEATURES menu and set the BLUE BACK function to OFF.

• If the SOUND SYSTEM setting for a TV channel is incorrect, it may prevent sound from being issued. Go to the INSTALL menu, select MANUAL, and try changing the SOUND SYSTEM setting.

If the picture quality is poor, consider the following causes and solutions:

• If noise (snow) totally blocks the picture, check the aerial connection. Ensure the cable is connected properly, is not damaged, and the aerial is pointing in the right direction.

• If you see stripes or noise, other equipment (like an amplifier, PC, or hair drier) may be causing interference. Move this equipment away from the TV.

• If you see double-pictures (ghosting), this may be caused by signals reflecting from mountains or buildings. Try changing the aerial’s direction or replacing it with one with better directionality.

• Check if the COLOUR and BRIGHTNESS settings have been adjusted properly. You can adjust these in the PICTURE menu.

• When viewing images from some video software or improperly recorded tapes, the top of the image may be distorted. This is due to the condition of the video signal and is not a fault with the TV.

If the remote control does not seem to be working, please check the following:

• Have the batteries worn out? Try replacing them with new batteries.

• Are you using the remote control from the side or rear of the TV, or from more than seven metres away? Use the remote control from the front of the TV and within seven metres.

• Are you trying to operate the menus while viewing a teletext program? You cannot operate menus in teletext mode. Press the Text button to return to the ordinary TV program and then try again.

• If the TV suddenly stops responding, disconnect the power cord from the AC outlet. Wait a moment, then plug it back in and turn the TV on. If the TV returns to a normal state, it is not a failure.

• TV turns off unexpectedly: The SLEEP TIMER function may be active. Try turning the TV on again with the standby button. If it returns to normal, there is no problem.

• Crackling sound: The TV may make a crackling sound due to a sudden change in temperature. This is normal. If you hear frequent crackling, there may be other causes, and you should ask a service technician to inspect it.

• Screen becomes hot: The top of the TV and the screen may become hot during use, but this has no effect on performance. Ensure ventilation holes are not blocked.

• Faint residual image: If a still image has been displayed for a long period, a faint afterimage may remain for a short time. This is not a malfunction and the image will eventually disappear.

• Error messages in PC Mode:

• NO SIGNAL: The TV is not receiving a signal from the PC. Check that the PC is on and working correctly.

• CABLE NO INPUT: The cable is not connected correctly. Ensure the cable is connected securely.

• OUT OF RANGE: The picture resolution from the PC is not supported. Ensure the PC picture resolution is set to a supported mode.

The resolution and the frequencies which are displayed on the screen may not be exactly the same as this list.
