The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the User’s Guide for your BROTHER MCF-L2800DW:

Before attempting any printing operation, confirm the following:

• Make sure you have installed the correct software and drivers for your machine.

• For USB or network cable users: Make sure the interface cable is physically secure.

If your computer is protected by a firewall and you are unable to network print, network scan, or PC-FAX, you may need to configure the firewall settings. If you are using the Windows Firewall and you installed the drivers using the steps in the installer, the necessary firewall settings have been already set. If you are using any other personal firewall software, see the User’s Guide for your software or contact the software manufacturer.

When text is required, you can enter characters on the machine. The available characters may differ depending on the operation you perform. The buttons 0, #, and * are used for special characters.

Press the appropriate dial pad button the number of times shown in the reference table to access the character you want.

Inserting spaces: To enter a space in a fax number, press the right arrow key once between numbers. To enter a space in a name, press the right arrow key twice between characters.

Making corrections: If you entered a character incorrectly, press the left or right arrow key to move the cursor to the incorrect character, and then press Clear.

Repeating letters: To enter a letter that is on the same button as the previous letter, press the right arrow key to move the cursor before pressing the button again.

Special symbols and characters: Press *, #, or 0, then use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the symbol you want. Press OK to select it.

Step 1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

Step 2. Press and slide the paper guides to fit the paper. Press the green release levers to slide the paper guides.

Step 3. Fan the stack of paper well.

Step 4. Load paper in the paper tray with the printing surface face down.

Step 5. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (indicated by three triangles).

Step 6. Slowly push the paper tray completely into the machine.

Step 7. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the output tray.

Use the ADF when copying or scanning multi-page, standard-sized documents. The ADF can hold up to 50 sheets of standard 80 g/m² paper.

IMPORTANT:

• DO NOT use paper that is curled, wrinkled, folded, ripped, stapled, paper-clipped, glued, or taped.

• DO NOT use cardboard, newspaper, or fabric.

• To avoid damaging your machine, DO NOT pull on the document while it is feeding.

Supported Document Sizes:

• Length: 147.3 to 355.6 mm

• Width: 105 to 215.9 mm

• Weight: 60 to 105 g/m²

Loading Instructions:

Step 1. Unfold the ADF document output support flap.

Step 2. Fan the pages well.

Step 3. Stagger the pages of your document and load it into the ADF face up and top edge first.

Step 4. Adjust the paper guides to fit the width of your document.

Use the scanner glass to fax, copy, or scan one page at a time. The ADF must be empty to use the scanner glass.

Supported Document Sizes:

• Length: Up to 300 mm

• Width: Up to 215.9 mm

• Weight: Up to 2kg

Loading Instructions:

Step 1. Lift the document cover.

Step 2. Place the document on the scanner glass face down.

Step 3. Place the corner of the page in the upper left corner of the scanner glass.

Step 4. Close the document cover. If the document is thick, like a book, gently press on the cover.

The following table shows the maximum unscannable and unprintable areas from the edges of the paper. Do not attempt to scan, copy, or print in these areas.

Always test paper samples before purchasing them to ensure desirable performance. Store paper in its original packaging, sealed, flat, and away from moisture, direct sunlight, and heat.

IMPORTANT: Some types of paper may not perform well or may cause damage to your machine. This damage is not covered under any Brother warranty or service agreement. DO NOT use paper:

• that is highly textured

• that is extremely smooth or shiny

• that is curled or warped

• that is coated or has a chemical finish

• that is damaged, creased, or folded

• that exceeds the recommended weight specification

• with tabs and staples

• that is multipart or carbonless

• that is designed for inkjet printing

Press Stop/Exit.

To cancel multiple print jobs, press and hold Stop/Exit for four seconds.

If you are experiencing problems with print quality, follow these instructions to print a test page:

Step 1. Press Menu.

Step 2. Press the up or down arrow key to display the [Printer] option, and then press OK.

Step 3. Press the up or down arrow key to display the [Test Print] option, and then press OK.

Step 4. Press Start. The machine prints a Test Print page.

Step 5. Press Stop/Exit.

Step 1. Press Fax.

Step 2. Load your document. You can place the document face up in the ADF or face down on the scanner glass.

Step 3. Enter the fax number using one of the following methods:

• Using the dial pad: Enter the fax number directly.

• Using the Shortcut Button: Hold down the Shortcut button, and then enter the assigned Shortcut number using the dial pad.

• Using Speed Dial Codes: Press the Address Book button twice, and then enter the three-digit Speed Dial code. Press OK.

Step 4. Press Start. The machine scans and sends the document.

If you placed the document on the scanner glass, follow the on-screen instructions to scan additional pages.

You must choose a Receive Mode depending on the external devices and telephone services you have on your line. By default, your machine will automatically receive any faxes that are sent to it.

• Do you want to use a telephone or external answering device on the same line?

• If NO, select Fax Only Mode.

• If YES, proceed to the next question.

• Are you using the voice message function of an external telephone answering device?

• If YES, select External TAD Mode.

• If NO, proceed to the next question.

• Do you want the machine to answer fax and telephone calls automatically?

• If YES, select Fax/Tel Mode.

• If NO, select Manual Mode.

To change the receive mode:

Step 1. Press Menu.

Step 2. Press the up or down arrow key to display the [Fax] option, and then press OK.

Step 3. Press the up or down arrow key to display the [Setup Receive] option, and then press OK.

Step 4. Press the up or down arrow key to display the [Receive Mode] option, and then press OK.

Step 5. Press the up or down arrow key to select [Fax Only], [Fax/Tel], [External TAD], or [Manual], and then press OK.

Step 6. Press Stop/Exit.

Step 1. Remove any paper from the ADF that is not jammed.

Step 2. Open the ADF cover.

Step 3. Pull the jammed document out to the left. If the document rips or tears, be sure you remove any debris or scraps to prevent future jams.

Step 4. Close the ADF cover.

Step 5. Press Stop/Exit.

Step 1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes for the internal fan to cool the extremely hot parts inside the machine.

Step 2. Open the front cover.

Step 3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.

WARNING: HOT SURFACE. The machine’s internal parts will be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before touching them.

Step 4. Pull out the jammed paper slowly.

Step 5. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

Step 6. Close the front cover.

If your BROTHER MCF-L2800DW is not printing, try the following suggestions:

• Check that the machine is not in Power Off mode. If it is, press the power button and send the print data again.

• Check that the correct printer driver has been installed and selected.

• Check to see if the Status Monitor or the machine’s control panel displays an error.

• Check that the machine is online. For Windows, open “control printers”, right-click your printer’s icon, select “See what’s printing”, and in the Printer menu, make sure “Use Printer Offline” is not selected.

• If a print job is stuck, cancel the print job and clear it from the machine’s memory, then try sending the data again.

Adverse conditions on the power connection (such as lightning or a power surge) may have triggered the machine’s internal safety mechanisms. Unplug the power cord. Wait for ten minutes, then plug in the power cord and press the power button to turn the machine on.

If the problem is not solved and you are using a power breaker, disconnect it to make sure it is not the problem. Plug the machine’s power cord directly into a different known working wall electrical socket. If there is still no power, try a different power cable.

Step 1. Press Menu.

Step 2. Press the up or down arrow key to display the [Machine Info.] option, and then press OK.

Step 3. Press the up or down arrow key to select one of the following options:

Step 4. Press OK.

Step 5. Press Stop/Exit.

You can reset your machine’s settings through the control panel menu.

Step 1. Press Menu.

Step 2. Press the up or down arrow key to display the [Initial Setup] option, and then press OK.

Step 3. Press the up or down arrow key to display the [Reset] option, and then press OK.

Step 4. Press the up or down arrow key to choose the type of reset you want to perform, and then press OK.

Step 5. A confirmation message will appear. To proceed with the reset, press the up arrow key. To cancel, press the down arrow key.

Step 6. The LCD will display [Reboot OK?]. To reboot the machine, press the up arrow key. To exit without rebooting, press the down arrow key.

The following reset functions are available:

• Machine Reset: Resets settings like programmed fax jobs, Coverpage Message, Remote Fax Options, and Language Setting.

• Network Settings Reset: Resets the print server to its default factory settings (including IP Address information, but not the administrator password). Unplug the interface cable before performing this reset.

• Address Book and Fax Settings Reset: Resets the Address Book, programmed fax jobs, Station ID, Coverpage Message, Remote Fax Options, Reports, and Setting Lock password.

• All Settings Reset: Resets all machine settings back to the factory settings. This takes less time than a Factory Reset.

• Factory Reset: Resets all machine settings to the settings originally set at the factory. This takes more time than All Settings Reset and is recommended when you dispose of the machine. Unplug the interface cable before performing this reset.

Step 1. Make sure the machine is turned on.

Step 2. Open the front cover.

Step 3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

Step 4. Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

Step 5. Unpack the new toner cartridge and remove its protective cover.

Step 6. Hold the new toner cartridge by the handle and shake it from left to right several times. Then push it firmly into the drum unit until it locks into place.

Step 7. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and back again several times. Ensure the tab is returned to the Home position (indicated by an arrow).

Step 8. Reinsert the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

Step 9. Close the front cover of the machine. Do not turn the machine off until the display returns to Ready Mode.

Step 1. Make sure the machine is turned on.

Step 2. Open the front cover.

Step 3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

Step 4. Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

Step 5. Unpack the new drum unit.

Step 6. Push the toner cartridge firmly into the new drum unit until it locks into place.

Step 7. Reinsert the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

Step 8. Close the front cover of the machine.

After installing the new drum unit, you must reset the drum counter.

After you replace the drum unit with a new one, you must reset the drum counter. Do not reset the drum counter unless you are replacing the drum unit.

Step 1. Make sure the machine is turned on and the cover is closed.

Step 2. Press OK and the up arrow key (▲) at the same time.

Step 3. Press OK to select [Drum].

Step 4. Press the up arrow key (▲) to reset the drum counter.

If you have print quality problems, clean the corona wire.

Step 1. Open the front cover.

Step 2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

Step 3. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left several times.

Step 4. Be sure to return the tab to the Home position (▲). The arrow on the tab must be aligned with the arrow on the drum unit. If it is not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.

Step 5. Reinsert the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

Step 6. Close the front cover of the machine.

Step 1. Press Menu.

Step 2. Press the up or down arrow key to display the [Machine Info.] option, and then press OK.

Step 3. Press the up or down arrow key to display the [Parts Life] option, and then press OK.

Step 4. Press the up or down arrow key to select the [Toner] or [Drum] option, and then press OK.

Step 5. The LCD displays the approximate remaining toner or drum life.

Step 6. Press Stop/Exit.

Find the Default Password

The default password to manage your BROTHER MCF-L2800DW’s settings is located on the back of the machine and marked “Pwd“.

Change the Password

We recommend immediately changing the default password to protect your machine from unauthorised access. You can use Web Based Management to change the password.

Reset the Password

If you forget your password, you must reset your machine to its factory default settings. This will also reset the password to the default password (“Pwd” on the back of the machine).
