The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the User’s Guide for your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW:

Before using your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW, please consider the following:

• Not all models are available in all countries.

• Before giving your machine to anyone else, replacing it, or disposing of it, we strongly recommend resetting it to its factory settings to remove all personal information.

• In the user’s guide, the LCD messages of the MFC-L2800DW/MFC-L2860DW are used unless otherwise specified.

• In the user’s guide, the illustrations of the MFC-L2860DW are used unless otherwise specified.

• The screens or images in the user’s guide are for illustration purposes only and may differ from those of the actual products.

• Unless otherwise specified, the screens in the manual are from Windows 10. Screens on your computer may vary depending on your operating system.

• The contents of the document and the specifications of this product are subject to change without notice.

The control panel on your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW includes several buttons and a display screen to operate the machine. The layout and functions are as follows:

1. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD):

Displays messages to help you set up and use the machine.

• In Fax Mode, it shows Date & Time and Receive Mode.

• In Copy Mode, it shows Type of copy, Number of copies, Quality, Contrast, and Copy ratio.

2. Menu Buttons:

• Clear: Press to delete entered data or cancel the current setting.

• Menu: Press to access the Menu to program your machine settings.

• OK: Press to store your machine’s settings.

• ◀ or ▶: Press to scroll back or forward through menu selections.

• ▲ or ▼: Press to scroll up or down through menus and options. Also used to change the resolution in Fax Mode.

• Address Book Icon: Press to access speed dial numbers.

• Options: Press to access temporary settings for faxing, scanning, or copying.

3. Dial Pad:

• Use to dial fax and telephone numbers.

• Use as a keyboard to enter text or characters.

4. Mode Buttons:

• Fax: Press to switch the machine to Fax Mode.

• Copy: Press to switch the machine to Copy Mode.

• Scan: Press to switch the machine to Scan Mode.

5. Function Buttons:

• Redial/Pause: Press to dial the last number you called. This button also inserts a pause when programming quick dial numbers or when dialling a number manually.

• Tel/R: Press to have a telephone conversation after picking up the external handset. When connected to a PBX, use this button to gain access to an outside line, recall an operator, or transfer a call.

• Wi-Fi (for wireless models): Press and hold to launch the wireless installer on your computer. The light indicates the wireless connection status.

• Resolution (for certain models only): Press to change the Fax resolution.

• 2 in 1 (ID) Copy: Press to copy both sides of an identification card onto a single page.

• 2-sided: Press to copy on both sides of a sheet of paper.

• Shortcut Button: Store and recall up to ten fax and telephone numbers.

6. Power On/Off:

• Press to turn the machine on.

• Press and hold to turn the machine off. The LCD displays [Shutting Down].

7. Stop/Exit:

• Press to stop an operation.

• Press to exit from a menu.

8. Start:

• Press to start sending faxes, copying, or scanning documents.

When text is required, you can enter characters on your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW using the dial pad. The characters available may differ depending on the operation you perform. The buttons 0, # and * are used for special characters.

Press the appropriate dial pad button the number of times shown in the reference table to access the character you want.

Inserting spaces:

To enter a space in a fax number, press ▶ once between numbers. To enter a space in a name, press ▶ twice between characters.

Making corrections:

If you entered a character incorrectly, press ◀ or ▶ to move the cursor to the incorrect character, and then press Clear.

Repeating letters:

To enter a letter on the same button as the previous letter, press ▶ to move the cursor right before pressing the button again.

Special symbols and characters:

Press *, # or 0, then press ◀ or ▶ to move the cursor to the symbol or character you want. Press OK to select it.

To load paper into the paper tray of your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW, follow these steps:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Press and slide the paper guides to fit the paper size you are using. Press the green release levers to slide the paper guides.

3. Fan the stack of paper well to prevent jams.

4. Load paper in the paper tray with the printing surface face down.

5. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (▼▼▼). Overfilling the paper tray will cause paper jams.

6. Slowly push the paper tray completely into the machine.

7. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the output tray.

Note: When you load a different size and type of paper in the tray, you must also change the Paper Size and Paper Type settings on the machine or on your computer.

When you use preprinted paper for 2-sided printing on your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW, you need to change the machine’s settings. Please follow the correct paper orientation:

• For 1-sided printing: Load paper face down with the top edge towards the front of the paper tray.

• For automatic 2-sided printing (long edge binding): Load paper face up with the bottom edge towards the front of the paper tray.

To change the machine settings:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Printer]. Press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [2-sided]. Press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Single Image]. Press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [2-sided Feed]. Press OK.

6. Press Stop/Exit.

Before loading, press the corners and sides of the envelopes to make them as flat as possible. Follow these steps to print on envelopes with your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW:

1. Open the machine’s back cover (the face up output tray).

2. Pull down the two green levers as shown in the illustration (applicable to models with green levers).

3. On the front of the machine, open the manual feed slot cover.

4. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the envelope.

5. Using both hands, put one envelope in the manual feed slot with the printing surface facing up, until the front edge touches the paper feed roller. When you feel the machine pull it in, let go.

6. Send your print job to the machine. Change your print preferences in the Print dialog box for the correct envelope size (Com-10, DL, C5, Monarch) and media type (Envelopes, Env. Thick, Env. Thin).

7. After the printed envelope comes out of the machine, put in the next envelope. Repeat for each envelope you want to print.

8. When you finish printing, return the two green levers to their original position.

9. When finished, close the back cover (the face up output tray) until it locks in the closed position.

When you change the size and type of paper you load in the tray of your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW, you must also change the settings on the LCD. Follow these steps:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [General Setup] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Tray Setting] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Paper Type] option, and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Thin Paper], [Plain Paper], [Thick Paper], or [Recycled Paper] option, and then press OK.

6. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Paper Size] option, and then press OK.

7. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the option you want, and then press OK.

8. Press Stop/Exit.

Use the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) on your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW for copying or scanning multi-page, standard-sized documents. The ADF can hold up to 50 sheets of standard 80 g/m² paper.

Supported Document Sizes:

• Length: 147.3 to 355.6 mm

• Width: 105 to 215.9 mm

• Weight: 60 to 105 g/m²

IMPORTANT:

• DO NOT leave thick documents on the scanner glass, as this may cause the ADF to jam.

• DO NOT use paper that is curled, wrinkled, folded, ripped, stapled, paper-clipped, glued, or taped.

• DO NOT use cardboard, newspaper, or fabric.

• To avoid damaging your machine, DO NOT pull on the document while it is feeding.

Loading Instructions:

1. Unfold the ADF document output support flap.

2. Fan the pages well.

3. Stagger the pages of your document and load it into the ADF face up and top edge first.

4. Adjust the paper guides to fit the width of your document.

Use the scanner glass on your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW to fax, copy, or scan one page at a time, or for important and fragile documents.

Supported Document Sizes:

• Length: Up to 300 mm

• Width: Up to 215.9 mm

• Weight: Up to 2kg

NOTE: To use the scanner glass, the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) must be empty.

Loading Instructions:

1. Lift the document cover.

2. Place the document on the scanner glass face down.

3. Place the corner of the page in the upper left corner of the scanner glass.

4. Close the document cover. If the document is a book or is thick, gently press down on the document cover.

The table below shows the maximum unscannable and unprintable areas from the edges of the paper for your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW. Any content in these areas will not be reflected in the output.

Some types of paper may not perform well or may cause damage to your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW. It is important to test paper samples before purchasing them to ensure desirable performance. DO NOT use the following types of paper:

• Paper that is highly textured

• Paper that is extremely smooth or shiny

• Paper that is curled or warped

• Paper that is coated or has a chemical finish

• Paper that is damaged, creased, or folded

• Paper that exceeds the recommended weight specification

• Paper with tabs and staples

• Multipart or carbonless paper

• Paper designed for inkjet printing (it may cause a paper jam or damage your machine)

Using these types of paper may damage your machine, and this damage is not covered under any Brother warranty or service agreement.

To cancel a print job on your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW, press the Stop/Exit button. To cancel multiple print jobs, press and hold the Stop/Exit button for four seconds.

If you are experiencing problems with print quality on your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW, follow these instructions to print a test page:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Printer] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Test Print] option, and then press OK.

4. Press Start.

The machine will print a Test Print page.

5. Press Stop/Exit.

To send a fax from your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW, follow these steps:

1. Press the (Fax) button.

2. Load your document. You can place it face up in the ADF (recommended for multiple pages) or face down on the scanner glass.

3. Enter the fax number using one of the following methods:

• Using the dial pad: Enter the fax number directly.

• Using the Shortcut Button: Hold down the Shortcut button, and then enter the one-digit Shortcut number.

• Using Speed Dial Codes: Press the address book icon twice, and then enter the three-digit Speed Dial code. Press OK.

4. Press Start.

The machine will scan and send the document. If you used the scanner glass, follow the on-screen instructions to scan additional pages:

To stop the faxing process, press Stop/Exit.

You must choose a Receive Mode on your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW depending on the external devices and telephone services you have on your line. The default mode is Fax Only.

Use this guide to select the correct mode:

• Do you want to use a telephone feature or an external device on the same line?

• If No, select Fax Only Mode.

• If Yes, continue to the next question.

• Are you using the voice message function of an external telephone answering device?

• If Yes, select External TAD Mode.

• If No, continue to the next question.

• Do you want the machine to answer fax and telephone calls automatically?

• If Yes, select Fax/Tel Mode.

• If No, select Manual Mode.

To set the receive mode:

1. Press (Fax).

2. Press Menu.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Fax] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Setup Receive] option, and then press OK.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Receive Mode] option, and then press OK.

6. Press ▲ or ▼ to select [Fax Only], [Fax/Tel], [External TAD], or [Manual], and then press OK.

7. Press Stop/Exit.

You can reset the settings on your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW. The following reset functions are available:

1. Machine Reset:

This resets settings like Programmed fax jobs, Coverpage Message, Remote Fax Options, and Language Setting.

2. Network Settings Reset:

Resets the print server to its default factory settings (excluding the administrator password).

3. Address Book and Fax Settings Reset:

This resets the Address Book, programmed fax jobs, Station ID, Coverpage Message, Remote Fax Options, Reports, and Setting Lock password.

4. All Settings Reset:

Resets all the machine’s settings back to the factory settings. This takes less time than a Factory Reset.

5. Factory Reset:

Resets all of the machine’s settings to the settings originally set at the factory. This operation is recommended when you dispose of the machine.

To perform a reset:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Initial Setup] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Reset] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to choose the type of reset you want to perform, and then press OK.

5. Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm the reset. The LCD will display [Reboot OK?].

6. Press ▲ to reboot and reset the machine. The machine will restart.

Follow these steps to replace the toner cartridge in your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW:

1. Make sure the machine is turned on.

2. Open the front cover.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

4. Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

5. Unpack the new toner cartridge and remove its protective cover.

6. Hold the new toner cartridge by the handle and shake it from left to right several times to distribute the toner evenly.

7. Push the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until it locks into place.

8. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and back again several times. Ensure the tab is returned to the Home position (▲).

9. Reinsert the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

10. Close the front cover of the machine. Do not turn the machine off until the display returns to Ready Mode.

To replace the drum unit in your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW, follow these steps:

1. Make sure the machine is turned on.

2. Open the front cover.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

4. Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

5. Unpack the new drum unit.

6. Push the toner cartridge firmly into the new drum unit until it locks into place.

7. Reinsert the new toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

8. Close the front cover of the machine.

After installing the new drum unit, you must reset the drum counter.

After you replace the drum unit with a new one on your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW, you must reset the drum counter. Do not reset the counter unless you are replacing the drum unit.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and the front cover is closed.

2. Press OK and ▲ at the same time.

3. Press OK to select [Drum].

4. Press ▲ to reset the drum counter.

If you have print quality problems or the control panel displays a [Drum !] status, you should clean the corona wire on your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW.

1. Open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

3. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left several times.

4. Be sure to return the tab to the Home position (▲). The arrow on the tab must be aligned with the arrow on the drum unit. If it is not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.

5. Reinsert the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

6. Close the front cover of the machine.

To check the approximate remaining life for parts like the toner or drum unit on your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW, follow these steps:

1. Press Menu.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Machine Info.] option, and then press OK.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to display the [Parts Life] option, and then press OK.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to select the [Toner] or [Drum] option, and then press OK.

The LCD displays the approximate remaining toner or drum life.

5. Press Stop/Exit.

If your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW displays “Cannot Print ##” or “Cannot Scan ##”, it indicates a mechanical problem. Follow these steps to troubleshoot:

• For “Cannot Print ##” or “Cannot Scan ##” (MFC models): To prevent losing received fax data in the machine’s memory, first transfer the data to another fax machine or to your computer.

• Remove any documents from the machine.

• Press and hold the Power On/Off button to turn the machine off, wait a few minutes, and then turn it on again.

If the problem continues after these steps, contact Brother customer service or your local dealer.

If you experience a paper jam in your BROTHER MCF-L2802DW, the location of the jam will be indicated on the control panel or Status Monitor. Follow the steps for the specific location:

Paper is Jammed in the Paper Tray:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Slowly pull out the jammed paper. Pulling it downwards may help remove it more easily.

3. Fan the stack of paper, check it is below the maximum paper mark, and put the paper tray firmly back into the machine.

Paper is Jammed in the Output Paper Tray:

1. Use both hands to open the scanner.

2. Remove the jammed paper.

3. Push the scanner down with both hands to close it.

Paper is Jammed in the Back of the Machine:

1. Leave the machine on for 10 minutes to cool down the internal parts.

2. Open the back cover.

3. Pull the blue tabs on the left and right sides to release the fuser cover. WARNING: Internal parts will be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool before touching them.

4. Use both hands to gently pull the jammed paper out.

5. Close the fuser cover and then close the back cover.

Paper is Jammed inside the Machine:

1. Leave the machine on for 10 minutes to cool down.

2. Open the front cover.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.

4. Pull out the jammed paper slowly.

5. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

6. Close the front cover.
