General Operation:

Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate this machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death and/or property damage.

To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury or death, do not operate the tumbler if it does not perform according to these instructions. Immediately disconnect electrical service, shut off gas supply and contact an authorized service representative. Service and repairs are to be performed by authorized service representatives only.

To reduce the risk of serious injury, install lockable door(s) to prevent public access to the rear of tumblers.

Before Use:

Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

DO NOT tamper with controls.

DO NOT bypass any safety devices.

Always follow the fabric care instructions supplied by the garment manufacturer.

Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

DO NOT reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

To avoid creating any flammable vapors which may explode, ignite, or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials in your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals or thinner.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

• DO NOT put articles soiled with vegetable or cooking oil in the dryer as these oils may not be removed during washing. Due to the remaining oil, the fabric may catch on fire by itself.

To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, serious injury or death to persons when using your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH dryer, follow these basic precautions:

1. Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision of children is necessary when the tumbler is used near children. This is a safety rule for all appliances.

2. Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

3. Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

4. Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate this machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death and/or property damage.

5. Run tumbler with a load before putting tumbler into service.

6. Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing. Disconnect power by shutting off the appropriate circuit breaker or fuse and by turning off the disconnect switch located on the rear of the tumbler.

7. All manually operated models are factory-equipped with an emergency stop button located on the front panel. If the emergency stop function is desired on coin-operated models, an external emergency stop switch may be installed as specified on the machine wiring diagram. Activation of the emergency stop switch stops all machine control circuit functions but does not remove all electrical power from the machine.

The model and serial numbers for your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH will be found on the nameplate. The nameplate is located on the rear of the tumbler or underneath the door hinge.

Upon delivery of your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH, visually inspect the crate, carton, and parts for any visible shipping damage. If there are signs of damage, have the carrier note the condition on the shipping papers before signing the receipt, or advise the carrier as soon as it is discovered. A written claim should be filed with the carrier immediately if articles are damaged or missing.

Remove the crate and protective cover as soon as possible and check items listed on the packing list.

IMPORTANT: Remove shipping tape from the two back draft dampers located in the exhaust thimble.

The following materials should be obtained locally for the installation of your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH:

For Gas, Electric, or Steam Drying Tumblers:

• One circuit breaker.

For Gas Drying Tumblers Only (like the SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH):

• One gas shut-off valve for the gas service line to each tumbler.

For Steam Drying Tumblers Only:

• One steam shut-off gate valve for the steam service line to be connected upstream of the solenoid steam valve.

• Two steam shut-off gate valves for each condensate return line.

• Flexible steam hoses with a 125 psig (8.79 kg/sq. cm) working pressure for connecting steam coils.

• Two steam traps for the steam coil outlet to the condensate return line.

• One steam pressure relief valve rated at 125 psig (8.79 kg/cm²).

Floor: The SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed.

Layout: Whenever possible, the tumbler should be installed along an outside wall where duct length can be kept to a minimum, and make-up air can be easily accessed. Construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler, as this would prevent an adequate air supply to the tumbler’s combustion chamber.

Venting: For maximum efficiency and minimum lint accumulation, tumbler air must be exhausted to the outdoors by the shortest possible route.

Make-Up Air: A tumbler is a forced air exhaust and requires provisions for make-up air to replace the air exhausted by the tumbler.

Venting Requirements:

• Exhaust ducts shall be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, with strength and corrosion resistance equivalent to galvanized sheet steel not less than 0.0195 inches (0.495 mm) thick.

• All elbows should be sweep type. Exhaust ducts must be assembled with smooth interior surfaces to reduce lint accumulation. Do not use sheet metal screws to join vent sections.

• Where an exhaust duct pierces a combustible wall or ceiling, an opening 4 inches (10.2 cm) larger than the duct diameter must be provided, with the duct centered. The space around the duct must be sealed with non-combustible material.

• For individual venting, the maximum allowable length is 14 feet (4.3 m) and two 90° elbows. If a longer duct is needed, the diameter must be increased.

• With the tumbler in operation, airflow at any point in the duct must be at least 1200 feet (366 m) per minute to ensure lint remains airborne.

• If using a collector duct, it must be tapered, and individual tumbler ducts must enter at a 45° angle in the direction of airflow.

Make-Up Air Requirements:

• The recommended make-up air opening for a 30-pound tumbler like the SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH is 144 square inches (928 sq. cm).

• At a minimum, tumblers must have at least 1 sq. inch (2.54 sq. cm) of opening for every 1000 BTU/hr of input rating for proper combustion.

• Protective louvers can reduce air movement by approximately 40%, so the opening size must compensate for this.

• If make-up air is ducted to the tumbler, increase the area of the ductwork by 25% to compensate for restriction in air movement.

The following tables show the electrical requirements for a 30-pound gas model like the SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH. DO NOT use aluminum wire.

Gas and High Pressure Steam Drying Tumblers

The SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH drying tumbler must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding will reduce the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance for electric current. The drying tumbler must be connected to a grounded metal, permanent wiring system; or an equipment grounding conductor must be run with the circuit conductors and connected to the PE Busbar.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and electric shock, check with a qualified serviceman for proper grounding procedures. Improper connection of the equipment grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and electric shock, if the electrical supply is coming from a three-phase service, DO NOT connect a “Stinger Leg” to a single-phase machine.

WARNING: All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit being connected to the tumbler before making any electrical connections. Never attempt to connect a live circuit.

Use the following steps to connect electrical service to the tumbler:

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. If more than one tumbler is being installed, a separate circuit breaker should be provided for each.

2. a. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

b. Turn the disconnect switch on the tumbler to “off” and open the junction box.

c. Insert the conduit-encased leads through one of the knockout holes in the junction box.

d. Connect wire leads to the disconnect switch. For 1 Phase Units (like the gas-powered JCB30CSH): Connect one lead to the top left connection point and the other lead to the top right connection point.

e. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

3. For three-phase units only, check the electrical service phase sequence. Energize the service and momentarily start the tumbler. If the cylinder rotates clockwise (viewed from the front), the phase is correct. If it rotates counterclockwise, disconnect power and reverse any two leads at the connections.

4. Close the junction box cover and turn the disconnect switch “on”.

Positioning:

The SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH tumbler may be removed from its shipping skid before or after moving to the installation location. To remove it from the skid, unscrew the four shipping capscrews (one at each corner). The lint panel door will need to be removed to access the two front capscrews. NOTE: Do not throw these four capscrews away – they are the leveling legs.

Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible. All four legs must rest firmly on the floor so the weight of the tumbler is evenly distributed and it does not rock.

Leveling:

Each tumbler should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear, and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from side to side. To check the front-to-rear level, rotate the clothes cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that bottom rib. The side-to-side level should be checked by placing a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

Before connecting gas piping to the SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH tumbler, make certain the gas service is the same as specified on the nameplate.

• Natural Gas: Service must be supplied at 6 1/2 ± 1 1/2 inch water column pressure (1.62 ± .37 kPa).

• L.P. Gas: Service must be supplied at 11 ± .3 inch water column pressure (2.74 ± .07 kPa).

If the gas service is not the same as specified, DO NOT CONNECT THE GAS LINE. The gas burner orifice and gas valve will need to be converted first by authorized personnel.

It is important that equal gas pressure be maintained at all tumbler gas connections. This can be best done by installing a one-inch pipe gas loop.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire or explosion, if the tumbler is to be connected to Liquefied Petroleum (L.P.) gas, a vent to the outdoors must be provided in the room where the tumbler is installed.

The following table shows the required pipe size for 1,000 BTU Natural Gas (.64 specific gravity) at 6 1/2 ± 1 1/2 inch water column pressure, based on a 0.3″ water column pressure drop for the given length.

1. Purge air and sediment from the gas service line before connecting it loosely to the SPEED QUEEN JCB30CSH tumbler.

2. Purge the remaining air until the odor of gas is detected, then tighten the connection.

3. Use pipe compound that is resistant to the actions of L.P. gas on all pipe threads.

WARNING: The tumbler and its individual shut-off valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing of that system at test pressures in excess of 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa).

WARNING: The tumbler must be isolated from the gas supply piping system by closing its individual manual shut-off valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping system at a test pressure equal to or less than 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa).

WARNING: Check all pipe connections, internal and external, for gas leaks using a soapy solution. To reduce the risk of explosion or fire, DO NOT USE AN OPEN FLAME TO CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS! Gas connections should be checked annually for leakage.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler with laundry, etc. Doing so would prevent an adequate air supply to the tumbler’s heat chamber.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury, install lockable doors to prevent public access to the rear of tumblers.

A typical tumbler enclosure can touch the tumbler top and side panels. Be aware that there may be local codes and ordinances which must be complied with.

• Top Clearance: Clearance of the tumbler cabinet from combustible construction must be a minimum of 12 inches (30.5 cm) at the top.

• Front Clearance: 0″ clearance is permitted for the first 4″ (10.16 cm) from the front edge. A maximum of 4″ (10.16 cm) is allowed for any adjacent structure in front of this area.

• Side Clearance: 0″ clearance is permitted.

• Rear Clearance: A minimum of 24″ (61 cm) is required, with 36″ (91.4 cm) recommended for maintenance purposes.

• A provision for make-up air must be included in the enclosure construction.

Lighting the System:

1. Turn the machine disconnect switch, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position.

2. Turn the gas shut-off valve, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position (gas valve handle should be parallel with the gas line).

3. Start the tumbler, following the operating instructions.

NOTE: The ignition control circuitry will verify the airflow switch is open before starting the cylinder motor. Once the motor starts, air flowing through the tumbler will close the airflow switch. The tumbler will purge air for 18 seconds. Ignition will then start with a three-second release of gas from the gas valve and sparking of the ignitor. If ignition does not occur during the first three seconds, the ignition control will “lockout,” causing the gas valve to close and a red button on the ignition control to illuminate.

To reset the ignition system, open the access door and press the red button on the ignition control. Close and lock the access door, verify the gas shut-off valve is in the “on” position, and return to step three.

Shutting Down the System:

If the tumbler will not start, remove it from service by:

1. Turning the machine disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler to the “off” position.

2. Turning the gas shut-off valve on the rear of the tumbler to the “off” position (the gas valve handle should be at a right angle to the gas line).

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension; adjust if necessary (refer to the Adjustment Section).

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line (gas models only). The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

5. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If the cylinder does not stop, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

6. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

7. Start the tumbler and check the burner flame; adjust the gas inlet shutter if necessary.

8. Check the airflow switch operation by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 1-1/2″ (3.81 cm). Adjust if necessary.

9. Turn off the tumbler.

10. Check the airflow switch operation again by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 6″ (15.24 cm) with a full load.

For Manual Dual Timer Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH and set the drying and cool-down selectors to their maximum settings.

2. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start, the heat system will turn on, the drying indicator will light, and the drying selector will rotate counterclockwise.

3. When the drying selector reaches zero (0), the heat system will shut off, the drying indicator will turn off, the cooling indicator will light, and the cooling selector will rotate counterclockwise.

4. When the cooling selector reaches zero (0), the motor will stop, and the cooling indicator will turn off, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

For Coin Operated Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2 1/2 minute cool-down cycle will start.

5. When metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

NOTICE: Both air inlet shutters on the burner must be adjusted so sufficient air is metered into the system for proper combustion and maximum efficiency. Before adjusting, ensure all lint is removed from the lint compartment and lint screen.

1. Unlock and open the access door.

2. Start the tumbler and check the flame pattern. A correct air and gas mixture is indicated if the flame pattern is primarily blue with small yellow tips and bends to the right of the heater section. Too little air is indicated if the flame is yellow, lazy, and smoky.

3. To adjust the air shutter, loosen the air inlet shutter adjusting screw.

4. Open or close the air shutter as necessary to obtain the proper flame intensity.

5. After the air shutter is adjusted for a proper flame, tighten the air shutter adjusting screw securely. The control panel may need to be removed temporarily to loosen the air shutter screws to turn the shutter.

6. If the shutter is correctly adjusted, but the flame pattern is straight up, it indicates insufficient primary air is flowing through the tumbler. If the flame pattern flares to the right and left, it indicates no air is flowing through the tumbler.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, airflow switch operation may be affected by a clogged lint screen, lack of make-up air, or obstructions in the exhaust ducts. These conditions must be checked and necessary corrections made before adjusting the airflow switch. Always adjust airflow at installation.

The counterweight should be adjusted so airflow will force the disc away from the cabinet when the lint panel is opened 6 inches (15.24 cm) with a full load. Adjust as follows:

1. Load the tumbler.

2. Start the tumbler. Open the lint panel 6 inches (15.24 cm). The airflow disc should move away from the cabinet, opening the switch contacts and shutting off the heat system. This indicates proper operation.

3. If the switch is not opening as described, it needs to be MORE sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight toward the disc. Retest by opening the lint panel and continue moving the counterweight toward the disc until it operates correctly.

4. If the switch opens BEFORE the lint panel is opened the proper distance, it needs to be LESS sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight away from the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight away from the disc until it operates correctly.

Loading Door Switch Adjustment:

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler anytime the loading door is opened. To adjust:

1. Start the tumbler following operating instructions.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the loading door. The loading door switch should close with an audible “click” when the loading door is closed 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct point:

a. Close the loading door completely.

b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the switch coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops.

c. Tighten the lower screw on the switch coupler.

d. Return to step 1 to verify proper operation.

Cylinder Door Strike Adjustment:

The door strike must be adjusted to have sufficient tension to hold the door closed against the force of a tumbling load. Proper adjustment is when 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) of pull is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut on the door strike, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Retighten the jamnut.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation.

Proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) by applying light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and motor pulley. The upper Poly V-belt is self-adjusting and requires no adjustment.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt holding the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten V-belt:

a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen V-belt:

a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, the guard MUST be installed on the rear of the tumbler after the belt adjustment is made.

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint in the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the lint screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the lint screen is torn, replace it immediately. A torn lint screen allows lint to flow into the ductwork system, restricting air circulation.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps between the lint screen and hood allow lint to flow into the ductwork system, restricting air circulation.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the sensing probe will cause overheating of the tumbler.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

1. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

3. (This step appears to be missing from the source document but is typically to check motor vents)

4. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

5. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

6. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

7. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

8. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

9. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Clean accumulated lint and other debris from the front and back motor air vents.

5. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line (gas models only). The handle of the gas shut-off valve should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

6. Remove screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

7. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension (refer to the Adjustments section).

8. Reinstall the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

9. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

10. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line (gas models only). The handle of the gas shut-off valve should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Perform quarterly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

5. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

6. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line (gas models only). The handle of the gas shut-off valve should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

7. Unlock and open the service panel and inspect gas connections for evidence of leakage or loose connections. NOTE: Spraying a mild solution of soap and water on joints will cause bubbles to appear on any leaking connections.

8. Close and securely lock the service panel.

9. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose electrical connections.

10. Close the electrical junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

11. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line (gas models only). The handle of the gas shut-off valve should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

Quarterly Maintenance

Biannual Maintenance

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the gas supply external to the machine.

4. Turn off the manual gas shut-off valve on the machine.

5. Turn off the steam supply external to the machine (for steam models).

6. Remove all electric, gas, and steam connections.
