General Warnings:

FAILURE TO INSTALL, MAINTAIN, AND/OR OPERATE THIS MACHINE ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURER’S INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN CONDITIONS WHICH CAN PRODUCE SERIOUS INJURY, DEATH AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury or death, do not operate the SPEED QUEEN SC50CE tumbler if it does not perform correctly. Immediately disconnect electrical service and contact an authorized service representative. All service and repairs must be performed by authorized service representatives only.

To reduce the risk of serious injury, install lockable door(s) to prevent public access to the rear of the tumbler.

To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, serious injury, or death when using your SPEED QUEEN SC50CE dryer, follow these basic precautions:

1. Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

2. DO NOT tamper with controls.

3. DO NOT bypass any safety devices.

4. Always follow the fabric care instructions supplied by the garment manufacturer.

5. Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

6. DO NOT reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

7. Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision of children is necessary when the tumbler is used near children.

8. Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

9. Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

10. Run the tumbler with a load before putting it into service.

11. Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing. Disconnect power by shutting off the appropriate circuit breaker or fuse and by turning off the disconnect switch located on the rear of the tumbler.

12. Activation of the emergency stop switch stops all machine control circuit functions but does not remove all electrical power from the machine.

To avoid creating any flammable vapors which may explode, ignite, or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials in your SPEED QUEEN SC50CE:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in, or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents, or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubber-like materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals, or thinner. DO NOT put articles soiled with vegetable or cooking oil in the dryer as these oils may not be removed during washing. Due to the remaining oil, the fabric may catch on fire by itself.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

• Use for drying water-washed fabrics only.

The warning labels found on the SPEED QUEEN SC50CE indicate the following:

• Fire Hazard: A clothes dryer produces combustible lint. The tumbler MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

• Rotating Parts: Do not touch rotating parts.

• Hot Surface: Do not touch the surface until it has cooled.

• Guard Warning: Do not operate without guards in place.

• Electrical Hazard: Disconnect electrical power before servicing.

The model and serial numbers for your SPEED QUEEN SC50CE are located on the nameplate. The nameplate can be found on the rear of the tumbler or underneath the door hinge.

The specifications for the SPEED QUEEN SC50CE 50 Pound (22 kg) Electric Tumbler are as follows:

Upon delivery, visually inspect the crate, carton, and parts for any visible shipping damage. If there are signs of damage, have the carrier note the condition on the shipping papers before signing the receipt, or inform the carrier as soon as it is discovered. A written claim should be filed with the carrier immediately if articles are damaged or missing.

Remove the crate and protective cover as soon as possible and check the items against the packing list.

IMPORTANT: Remove the shipping tape from the two back draft dampers located in the exhaust thimble.

Materials Required (Obtain Locally)

You will need to obtain one circuit breaker for the SPEED QUEEN SC50CE.

Facility Requirements

• Floor: The drying tumbler may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed.

• Layout: Whenever possible, the tumbler should be installed along an outside wall where the duct length can be kept to a minimum, and make-up air can be easily accessed. The construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler, as this would prevent an adequate air supply.

• Venting: For maximum efficiency and minimum lint accumulation, the tumbler air must be exhausted outdoors by the shortest possible route.

• Make-Up Air: The tumbler is a forced-air exhaust appliance and requires provisions for make-up air to replace the exhausted air. The recommended make-up air opening is 144 square inches (928 sq. cm). Protective louvers can reduce air movement by approximately 40%, so the opening size must compensate for the area taken up by louvers.

Properly sized exhaust ducts are essential for the operation of the SPEED QUEEN SC50CE.

• Exhaust ducts must be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, with strength equivalent to galvanized sheet steel not less than 0.0195 inches (0.495 mm) thick.

• All elbows should be sweep type. Do not use sheet metal screws to join vent sections, as interior surfaces must be smooth to reduce lint accumulation.

• Where an exhaust duct pierces a combustible wall or ceiling, provide an opening that is 4 inches (10.2 cm) larger in diameter than the duct, and center the duct in the opening. The space around the duct must be sealed with non-combustible material.

• Individual Venting: It is preferred to exhaust each tumbler individually to the outdoors. The cross area of the installed venting must not be less than the cross area of the tumbler’s exhaust thimble. The maximum allowable length of venting is 14 feet (4.3 m) with two 90° elbows or equivalent. If a longer duct is needed, the diameter must be increased.

• With the tumbler in operation, the airflow at any point in the duct must be at least 1200 feet (366 m) per minute to ensure lint remains airborne.

• Collector Venting: A main collector duct may be used if sized correctly. It must be tapered, and individual tumbler ducts must enter the collector duct at a 45° angle in the direction of air flow. Never connect a tumbler duct at a 90° angle to the collector duct.

Equivalent Length of Straight Duct for 90° Elbows

Positioning the Tumbler:

1. The tumbler can be removed from its shipping skid before or after moving to the installation location.

2. Remove the tumbler from the skid by unscrewing the four shipping capscrews (one at each corner).

3. The lint panel door will have to be removed to access and remove the two front capscrews.

4. NOTE: Do not discard these four capscrews; they are the leveling legs.

5. Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top.

6. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible. All four legs must rest firmly on the floor so the weight is evenly distributed and the tumbler does not rock.

Leveling the Tumbler:

The SPEED QUEEN SC50CE should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear and side to side.

• To check the front-to-rear level, rotate the clothes cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that bottom rib.

• To check the side-to-side level, place a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

WARNING: All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit before making any connections. Never attempt to connect a live circuit.

NOTE: DO NOT use aluminum wire.

Electrical Requirements for SPEED QUEEN SC50CE (50 Pound Electric Models)

Connection Steps:

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. A separate circuit breaker should be provided for each tumbler.

2. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

3. Turn the disconnect switch on the tumbler to “off” and open the junction box.

4. Insert the conduit-encased leads through a knockout hole in the junction box.

5. Connect wire leads to the disconnect switch. For 3 Phase Units, connect one lead to each connection point.

6. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

7. For three-phase units, check the phase sequence: Energize the service and momentarily start the tumbler. Check the cylinder rotation direction. If it rotates clockwise (viewed from the front), the sequence is correct. If not, disconnect power and reverse any two leads at the connections.

8. Close the junction box cover and turn the disconnect switch “on”.

The SPEED QUEEN SC50CE drying tumbler must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding reduces the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance for the electric current.

The tumbler must be connected to a grounded, metal, permanent wiring system; or an equipment-grounding conductor must be run with the circuit conductors and connected to the PE Busbar.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and electric shock, check with a qualified serviceman for proper grounding procedures. Improper connection of the equipment grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and electric shock, if the electrical supply is coming from a three-phase service, DO NOT connect a “Stinger Leg” to a single-phase machine.

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension and adjust if necessary (refer to the Adjustment Section).

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. (Gas models only step)

5. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If it does not stop, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

6. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

7. (Gas models only step)

8. Check the air flow switch operation by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 1-1/2″ (3.81 cm). Adjust if necessary.

9. Turn off the tumbler.

10. Check the air flow switch operation again by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 6″ (15.24 cm) with a full load.

Manual Dual Timer Tumbler Operation:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH and set the drying and cool-down selectors to their maximum settings.

2. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start, the heat system will turn on, the drying indicator will light, and the drying selector will rotate counterclockwise.

3. When the drying selector reaches zero (0), the heat system will shut off, the drying indicator will turn off, the cooling indicator will light, and the cooling selector will rotate counterclockwise.

4. When the cooling selector reaches zero (0), the motor will stop, and the cooling indicator will turn off, indicating the cycle is finished.

Coin Operated Tumbler Operation:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2 1/2 minute cool-down cycle will start.

5. When the metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

Electronic Control Tumbler Operation:

The SPEED QUEEN SC50CE may come equipped with an Electronic Control, which gives the owner a variety of programming options. To learn how to use the Electronic Control, consult the supplemental manual.

The air flow switch is factory-set but may require adjustment. On electric models like the SPEED QUEEN SC50CE, if the switch remains open or frequently opens and closes during a cycle, the heating system will shut off, though the cylinder and fan will continue to operate.

WARNING: Air flow switch operation can be affected by a clogged lint screen, lack of make-up air, or obstructions in the ductwork. Check and correct these conditions before adjusting the switch.

NOTICE: The control panel must be in place and the access door closed before adjusting.

Adjustment Steps:

1. Load the tumbler.

2. Start the tumbler. Open the lint panel 6 inches (15.24 cm). The airflow disc should move away from the cabinet, opening the switch contacts and shutting off the heat system. This indicates proper adjustment.

3. If the switch does not open as described, it needs to be made MORE sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight toward the disc. Retest by opening the lint panel and continue adjusting until it operates correctly.

4. If the switch opens BEFORE the lint panel is opened 6 inches, it needs to be made LESS sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight away from the disc. Retest and continue adjusting until it operates correctly.

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler when the door is opened. To adjust it, follow these steps:

1. Start the tumbler following its operating instructions.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3 inches (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4 inch (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the loading door. The switch should close with an audible “click” when the door is closed 3 inches (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4 inch (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct point:

a. Close the loading door completely.

b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops.

c. Tighten the lower screw on the switch coupler.

d. Return to step 1 to verify the adjustment.

The door strike must be adjusted to have enough tension to hold the loading door closed against the force of the tumbling load. Proper adjustment is achieved when a pull of 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut on the door strike, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Once adjusted, retighten the jamnut.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation. The guard MUST be reinstalled on the rear of the tumbler after the adjustment is made.

Proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) with light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and motor pulley. The upper poly V-belt is self-adjusting and requires no adjustment.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust the belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt that holds the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt:

a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen the V-belt:

a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler.

Daily Maintenance:

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint from the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the screen is torn, replace it immediately.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood to prevent lint from flowing into the ductwork.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe to prevent overheating.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

Monthly Maintenance:

1. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

3. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

4. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

5. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

6. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

7. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

8. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

Quarterly Maintenance:

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch.

2. Perform daily and monthly cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Clean accumulated lint and other debris from the front and back motor air vents.

4. Remove the screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

5. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension (refer to the Adjustments section).

6. Reinstall the rear drive guard.

7. Energize the electrical circuit by turning on the disconnect switch.

Biannual Maintenance:

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch.

2. Perform daily, monthly, and quarterly inspections and cleaning.

3. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

4. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose connections.

5. Close the electrical junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit.

Accessory timing cams allow for different timer increments. The cycle length is determined by dividing the timer motor speed (60) by the number of pins on the cam. For example, a 5-pin cam provides a 12-minute cycle (60 ÷ 5 = 12).

Removal of Existing Timing Cam:

1. Rotate the cam by hand until the “V” notch lines up beneath a ratchet tooth.

2. Insert a narrow screwdriver under the nylon cam, close to the clock shaft. Lift gently off the shaft, ensuring the “V” notch clears the ratchet tooth.

Installation of New Timing Cam:

1. Insert the drive fork into the new timing cam, with the wide prong in the wide hole.

2. Position the timing cam and drive fork over the timer shaft, aligning the timer flat with the drive fork and the “V” notch with one of the ratchet teeth.

3. Press the timing cam down firmly to seat it onto the motor shaft.

4. Remove all accumulated time by turning the cam counterclockwise until the switch shuts off. Apply moderate clockwise pressure to fully seat the cam and drive against the motor shaft. The meter must be advanced electrically for one cycle before an accurate measure of time can be made.

To take the SPEED QUEEN SC50CE out of service, follow these steps:

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the gas supply external to the machine (if applicable).

4. Turn off the manual gas shut-off valve on the machine (if applicable).

5. Turn off the steam supply external to the machine (if applicable).

6. Remove all electric, gas, and steam connections.
