If the tumbler does not perform correctly, immediately disconnect the electrical service, shut off the gas supply, and contact an authorized service representative. Service and repairs must be performed by authorized service representatives only.

To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury, or death when using the SPEED QUEEN JC50CE, follow these basic precautions:

• Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

• DO NOT tamper with controls.

• DO NOT bypass any safety devices.

• Always follow the fabric care instructions supplied by the garment manufacturer.

• Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

• DO NOT reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

• Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision is necessary when the tumbler is used near children.

• Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

• Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

• Run the tumbler with a load before putting it into service.

• Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing.

To avoid creating any flammable vapors which may explode, ignite or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials in your SPEED QUEEN JC50CE:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals, or thinner.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

• Do not put articles soiled with vegetable or cooking oil in the dryer as these oils may not be removed during washing. Due to the remaining oil, the fabric may catch on fire by itself.

The model and serial numbers for your SPEED QUEEN JC50CE will be found on the nameplate. The nameplate is located on the rear of the tumbler or underneath the door hinge.

Floor:

The drying tumbler may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed.

Layout:

Whenever possible, the tumbler should be installed along an outside wall where duct length can be kept to a minimum, and make-up air can be easily accessed. Construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler, as this would prevent an adequate air supply to the tumbler’s combustion chamber.

Properly sized exhaust ducts are essential for proper operation. For maximum efficiency, tumbler air must be exhausted to the outdoors by the shortest possible route.

• Exhaust ducts must be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, equivalent in strength and corrosion resistance to galvanized sheet steel not less than 0.0195 inches (0.495 mm) thick.

• All elbows should be sweep type. Do not use sheet metal screws to join vent sections.

• Where an exhaust duct pierces a combustible wall or ceiling, an opening having a diameter of 4 inches (10.2 cm) larger than the duct diameter shall be provided, with the duct centered in the opening.

• It is preferred to exhaust tumblers individually. At no point may the cross area of installed venting be less than the cross area of the tumbler’s exhaust thimble.

• The maximum allowable length of venting is 14 feet (4.3 m) and two 90° elbows or equivalent. If the duct length exceeds this, the duct diameter must be increased.

• With the tumbler in operation, airflow at any point in the duct must be at least 1200 feet (366 m) per minute to ensure that lint remains airborne.

• A main collector duct may be used if sized properly. Individual tumbler ducts must enter the collector duct at a 45° angle in the direction of airflow.

All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit before making connections.

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. A separate circuit breaker should be provided for each tumbler.

2. Follow these steps:

a. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

b. Turn “off” the disconnect switch on the tumbler and open the junction box.

c. Insert conduit-encased leads through one of the knockout holes in the junction box.

d. Connect wire leads to the disconnect switch. For 1 Phase Units: Connect one lead to the top left connection point and the other lead to the top right connection point.

e. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

3. For three-phase units, check the electrical service phase sequence. Energize the service and momentarily start the tumbler. If the cylinder rotates clockwise (viewed from the front), the sequence is correct. If it rotates counterclockwise, disconnect power and reverse any two leads at the connections.

4. Close the junction box cover and turn “on” the disconnect switch.

Positioning:

1. The tumbler may be removed from its shipping skid before or after moving to the installation location.

2. Remove the tumbler from the skid by unscrewing the four shipping capscrews (one at each corner). The lint panel door will need to be removed to access the two front capscrews.

3. These four capscrews are the leveling legs. Screw them back into the level adjusting fittings from the top.

4. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible.

Leveling:

1. The tumbler should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear, and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from side to side.

2. To check the front-to-rear level, rotate the clothes cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that bottom rib.

3. The side-to-side level should be checked by placing a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

4. All four legs must rest firmly on the floor so the weight of the tumbler is evenly distributed and the tumbler does not rock.

Gas Requirements:

Before connecting, ensure the gas service is the same as specified on the nameplate. DO NOT CONNECT if the service type is different.

• NATURAL GAS service must be supplied at 6-1/2 ± 1-1/2 inch water column pressure (1.62 ± .37 kPa).

• L.P. GAS service must be supplied at 11 ± .3 inch water column pressure (2.74 ± .07 kPa).

It is important that equal gas pressure be maintained at all tumbler gas connections, which can be achieved by installing a one-inch pipe gas loop.

Gas Connections:

1. Purge air and sediment from the gas service line before connecting it loosely to the tumbler.

2. Purge the remaining air until the odor of gas is detected, then tighten the connection.

3. Use pipe compound, resistant to the actions of L.P. gas, on all pipe threads.

4. Check all pipe connections, internal and external, for gas leaks using a soapy solution. DO NOT USE AN OPEN FLAME. Gas connections should be checked annually for leakage.

For applicable steam-heated models:

Steam Requirements:

• High pressure machines require a constant 80 to 100 psig (5.62 to 7.03 kg/sq. cm) steam service.

• Low pressure machines require a constant 10 to 15 psig (.70 to 1.05 kg/sq. cm) steam service.

Installing Steam Solenoid Valve and Inlet Connections:

1. Install a manual shut-off gate valve in the condensate return line after the steam trap for each coil.

2. Connect the steam solenoid valve to the related steam coil inlet connection with nipples, flex hoses, unions, a tee, and a pressure relief valve.

3. Install a gate shut-off valve in the steam supply line and connect its outlet to the solenoid steam valve inlet connection.

Installing Steam Trap and Condensate Return Connections:

1. Connect a flexible hose to each steam coil outlet.

2. Install a strainer to the ends of each flexible hose.

3. Install a steam trap to each strainer. The steam trap must be installed a minimum of 10 inches (25.4 cm) below the steam coil outlet connections.

4. Install a gate shut-off valve to each steam trap.

5. Connect to the condensate return lines.

The table below provides sizing information:

Lighting the System:

1. Turn the machine disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler to the “on” position.

2. Turn the gas shut-off valve on the rear of the tumbler to the “on” position (gas valve handle should be parallel with the gas line).

3. Start the tumbler following its operating instructions. The ignition control will first verify the airflow switch is open. Once the cylinder motor starts, the airflow switch will close. The tumbler will purge air for 18 seconds. Ignition then starts with a three-second release of gas and sparking of the ignitor.

NOTE: If ignition does not occur during the first three seconds, the ignition control will “lockout,” causing the gas valve to close and a red button on the control to illuminate. To reset, open the access door, press the red button on the ignition control, close and lock the door, verify the gas shut-off valve is “on,” and return to step 3.

Shutting Down the System:

If the tumbler will not start, remove it from service by turning the machine disconnect switch to the “off” position and turning the gas shut-off valve to the “off” position (gas valve handle should be at a right angle to the gas line).

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension and adjust if necessary.

3. Energize the electrical circuit at the circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. For gas models, turn on the gas supply at the manual shut-off valve (handle should be parallel to the line).

5. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) ± 1/4″ (0.635 cm). Adjust the door interlock if needed.

6. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

7. Start the tumbler and check the burner flame, adjusting the gas inlet shutter if necessary.

8. Check the airflow switch operation by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 1-1/2″ (3.81 cm). Adjust if necessary.

9. Turn off the tumbler.

10. Check airflow switch operation again by opening the lint panel with a full load. The heating system should shut off when the panel is opened approximately 6″ (15.24 cm).

Operating checks vary by control type:

Manual Dual Timer Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH and set the drying and cool-down selectors to their maximum settings.

2. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three seconds. The motor will start, the heat system will turn on, the drying indicator will light, and the drying selector will rotate counterclockwise.

3. When the drying selector reaches zero (0), the heat system will shut off, the drying indicator will turn off, the cooling indicator will light, and the cooling selector will rotate counterclockwise.

4. When the cooling selector reaches zero (0), the motor will stop, and the cooling indicator will turn off, indicating the cycle is finished.

Coin Operated Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three seconds. The motor will start, and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2 1/2 minute cool-down cycle will start.

5. When metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

Electronic Control Tumbler:

This tumbler is equipped with an Electronic Control that offers a variety of programming options. To learn how to use the Electronic Control, consult the supplemental manual.

Before adjusting, ensure all lint is removed from the lint compartment and screen. Both air inlet shutters on the burner must be adjusted for proper combustion.

1. Unlock and open the access door.

2. Start the tumbler and check the flame pattern. A correct mixture is indicated if the flame is primarily blue with small yellow tips and bends to the right. Too little air is indicated if the flame is yellow, lazy, and smoky.

3. To adjust, loosen the air inlet shutter adjusting screw.

4. Open or close the air shutter as necessary to obtain the proper flame intensity.

5. After adjusting, tighten the air shutter adjusting screw securely.

6. If the shutter is correctly adjusted but the flame pattern is straight up, it indicates insufficient primary air is flowing through the tumbler. If the flame flares to the right and left, it indicates no air is flowing through the tumbler.

The control panel must be in place and the access door closed before adjusting the air flow switch. The switch operation can be affected by a clogged lint screen, lack of make-up air, or obstructions in ductwork. Check and correct these conditions first.

1. Load the tumbler.

2. Start the tumbler. Open the lint panel 6 inches (15.24 cm). The airflow disc should move away from the cabinet, opening the switch contacts and shutting off the heat system. This indicates proper operation.

3. If the switch does not open as described, it needs to be MORE sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight toward the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight toward the disc until it operates correctly.

4. If the switch opens BEFORE the lint panel is opened 6 inches, it needs to be LESS sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight away from the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight away from the disc until it operates correctly.

Loading Door Switch Adjustment:

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler when the door is opened.

1. Start the tumbler.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the loading door. The switch should close with an audible “click” when the door is closed 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct point, adjust it: a. Close the door completely. b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops. c. Tighten the lower screw. d. Return to step 1 to verify.

Cylinder Door Strike Adjustment:

The door strike must be adjusted to hold the door closed against the force of a tumbling load. Proper adjustment is when 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) of pull is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut on the door strike, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Retighten the jamnut.

Disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation. Proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) with light thumb pressure midway between the sheave and motor pulley. The upper poly V-belt is self-adjusting and requires no adjustment.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt that holds the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt: a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt. b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension. c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen the V-belt: a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt. b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension. c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler. The guard MUST be reinstalled after adjustment is made.

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint in the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the lint screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the lint screen is torn, replace it immediately.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps can allow lint to flow into the ductwork.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the probe can cause overheating.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

1. Perform the daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

3. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

4. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

5. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

6. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

7. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

8. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Clean accumulated lint and other debris from the front and back motor air vents.

5. For gas models, shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

6. Remove the screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

7. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension.

8. Reinstall the rear drive guard.

9. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

10. For gas models, turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Perform quarterly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

5. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

6. For gas models, shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

7. Unlock and open the service panel and inspect gas connections for evidence of leakage or loose connections. NOTE: Spraying a mild solution of soap and water on joints will cause bubbles to appear on any leaking connections.

8. Close and securely lock the service panel.

9. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose electrical connections.

10. Close the electrical junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

11. For gas models, turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

QUARTERLY MAINTENANCE

BIANNUAL MAINTENANCE

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the gas supply external to the machine.

4. Turn off the manual gas shut-off valve on the machine.

5. Turn off the steam supply external to the machine (if applicable).

6. Remove all electric, gas, and steam connections.
