If you smell gas near the PLEASANT HEARTH VFF-PH26NG-T1, follow these steps immediately:

1. Do not try to light any appliance.

2. Do not touch any electrical switch; do not use any phone in your building.

3. Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions.

4. If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department.

This heater uses air (oxygen) from the room in which it is installed. Provisions for adequate combustion and ventilation air must be provided. The PLEASANT HEARTH VFF-PH26NG-T1 shall not be installed in a confined space or unusually tight construction unless provisions are provided for adequate combustion and ventilation air. A confined space is defined as a space whose volume is less than 50 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU/hr of the aggregate input rating of all appliances installed in that space.

1. If equipped, lift the fireplace screen up and pull out to remove. Set the screen aside.

2. Cut two plastic straps to remove the log from the firebox cavity. Set the log aside.

3. Locate four black Phillips sheet metal screws in the hardware packet.

4. Slide the hood between the louver and the firebox top and align the screw holes.

5. Insert the screws and tighten them firmly.

6. Carefully lift the insert through the center opening in the front of the fireplace. Slide the insert back through the opening until the metal trim makes contact with the front of the mantel.

Carefully follow these minimum clearances:

• Clearances from the side of the fireplace cabinet to any combustible material and wall: 6 inches on either side.

• Clearances from the top of the fireplace opening to the ceiling should not be less than 36 inches.

• Do not install where curtains, furniture, clothing, or other flammable objects are less than 42 inches from the front, top, or sides of the heater.

• If installed in a home garage, the pilot and burner must be at least 18 inches above the floor.

A qualified service technician must connect the heater to the gas supply. Follow all local codes. Important steps include:

1. Use only new black iron or steel pipe. Internally tinned copper tubing may be used in certain areas.

2. Installation must include an equipment shutoff valve, union, and plugged 1/8-in. NPT tap. Locate the NPT tap within reach for test gauge hook up upstream from the heater.

3. Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male threads to prevent excess sealant from going into the pipe.

4. Install a sediment trap in the supply line where it is within reach for cleaning and not likely to freeze.

5. Use a wrench to hold the gas regulator when connecting into gas piping to avoid damage.

Never use an open flame to check for a leak. Follow these steps:

1. Open the equipment shutoff valve and the gas supply tank valve.

2. Make sure the control knob of the heater is in the OFF position.

3. Apply a mixture of liquid soap and water to all joints from the equipment shutoff valve to the control valve.

4. If bubbles form, there may be a leak. Correct all leaks immediately.

5. Light the heater and check all other internal joints for leaks.

6. Turn off the heater.

It is very important to install the logs exactly as instructed. Do not modify the logs. Use only logs supplied with the heater.

1. Insert log #1 onto the rear row of pins on the base pan.

2. Insert log #2 onto the front left pin on the base pan.

3. Insert log #3 onto the front right pin on the base pan.

4. Insert log #4 onto the left pin of log #1 and the pin of log #2.

5. Insert log #5 onto the right pin of log #1 and the pin of log #3.

1. STOP! Read the safety information provided in the manual.

2. Open the lower access panel located below the fireplace screen.

3. Turn the control knob clockwise to the “OFF” position.

4. Wait five (5) minutes to clear out any gas. Then smell for gas, including near the floor. If you smell gas, STOP and follow safety instructions. If you don’t smell gas, proceed.

5. Turn the control knob counterclockwise to the “PILOT” position. Depress the control knob.

6. With the control knob depressed, push down on the ignitor button until the pilot lights. The pilot is located behind the fireplace screen.

7. Keep the control knob depressed for (30) seconds after the pilot lights. Release the control knob.

8. Turn the control knob counterclockwise to the desired setting.

9. Close the lower access panel.

1. Open the lower access panel located under the fireplace screen.

2. Turn the control knob clockwise to the “OFF” position.

3. Close the lower access panel.

To operate the system in Manual Mode:

• ON OPERATION: Press the ON key. The appliance flame will come on. The LCD screen will show ON, then default to display room temperature.

• OFF OPERATION: Press the OFF key. The appliance flame will shut off. The LCD screen will show OF, then default to display room temperature.

To operate Thermostat Function:

• Press the MODE key until the LCD screen shows the word ROOM.

• Press and hold the SET key until the desired set temperature is reached. (Numbers increase from 45 to 99 degrees F then restart).

• Release the SET key. The LCD screen will flash the set temperature for 3 seconds, then default to room temperature.

• To disengage thermo mode, press the MODE key until the word ROOM disappears.

Transmitter: Install (2) 1.5V AAA alkaline batteries into the battery compartment on the back of the remote.

Remote Receiver: The remote receiver operates on (4) 1.5V AA-size alkaline batteries. The battery cover slides on/off.

We recommend cleaning the unit every three months during operation. Follow these steps:

1. Shut off the unit including the pilot and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes.

2. Inspect burner, pilot, and primary air inlet holes for dust and dirt.

3. Blow air through the ports/slots and holes in the burner using compressed air (no greater than 30 PSI) or use a vacuum cleaner.

4. Clean the pilot assembly. A yellow tip on the pilot flame indicates dust and dirt. Lightly blow air through the small pilot air inlet hole about 2″ from where the pilot flame exits.

5. Wipe the cabinet exterior with a soft cloth dampened with a mild soap and water mixture.

If there is no spark at the ODS/pilot when the ignitor button is pressed, check the following:

• Ignitor electrode is positioned wrong or broken: Replace electrode.

• Ignitor electrode is not connected to ignitor cable: Reconnect.

• Ignitor cable is pinched or wet: Free ignitor cable if pinched. Keep ignitor cable dry.

• Damaged ignitor cable: Replace ignitor cable.

• Bad piezo ignitor: Replace piezo ignitor.

Burner backfiring may be caused by:

1. Burner orifice is clogged or damaged: Clean burner orifice or contact customer service.

2. Burner is damaged: Contact dealer or customer service.

3. Gas regulator is damaged: Replace gas regulator.

A high yellow flame may be caused by:

1. Not enough air: Check burner for dirt and debris. If found, clean burner.

2. Gas regulator is defective: Replace gas regulator.

3. Inlet gas pressure is too low: Contact your gas supplier.

Unwanted odors can be caused by:

1. Heater burning vapors from paint, hair spray, glues, etc.: Ventilate room. Stop using odor-causing products while heater is running.

2. Gas leak: Locate and correct all leaks immediately.

3. Low fuel supply: Refill supply tank (Propane/LP models).

If the heater shuts off during use (ODS operates), the causes may be:

1. Not enough fresh air is available: Open window and/or door for ventilation.

2. Low line pressure: Contact local gas supplier.

3. ODS/pilot is partially clogged: Clean ODS/pilot.
