If you smell gas, follow these steps immediately:

Do not try to light any appliance.

Do not touch any electrical switch; do not use any phone in your building.

Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions.

If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department.

Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids in the vicinity of this or any other appliance.

The PLEASANT HEARTH VFF-PH20NG-C1 falls under the VFF-PH20NG Series. Below are the specifications:

This heater shall not be installed in a room or space unless the required volume of indoor combustion air is provided by the method described in the Nation Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54, the International Fuel Gas Code, or applicable local codes.

Spaces fall into three classifications: Unusually Tight Construction, Unconfined Space, and Confined Space.

Unusually Tight Construction: Defined as construction where walls and ceilings have a continuous water vapor retarder with a rating of one perm or less with gasketed openings, weather stripping on windows/doors, and caulking applied to joints. If your home meets these criteria, you must provide additional fresh air.

Confined and Unconfined Space: An unconfined space has a volume not less than 50 cu. ft. per 1,000 BTU/hr of the aggregate input rating of all appliances. A confined space is less than 50 cu. ft. per 1,000 BTU/hr. If the space is confined, you must provide additional fresh air via ventilation from inside the building or from outdoors.

Maintain the following minimum clearances:

Never install the heater where curtains, furniture, clothing, or other flammable objects are less than 42 inches from the front, top, or sides of the heater.

Clearances from the top of the fireplace opening to the ceiling should not be less than 36 inches.

Clearances from the side of the fireplace cabinet to any combustible material and wall should be at least 6 inches on either side.

If installed in a home garage, the fireplace pilot and burner must be at least 18 inches above the floor.

If installing directly on carpeting, tile, or other combustible material other than wood flooring, the appliance must be installed on a metal or wood panel extending the full width and depth of the appliance.

A qualified service technician must connect the heater to the gas supply following all local codes.

Never connect the heater directly to the gas supply; an external regulator must be installed (provided by the gas supplier for natural gas).

Use only new black iron or steel pipe. Internally tinned copper tubing may be used in certain areas. Use pipe of 1/2 inch diameter or greater.

Installation must include an equipment shutoff valve, union, and plugged 1/8-inch NPT tap. Locate NPT tap within reach for test gauge hook up upstream from the heater.

Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male threads. Ensure the sealant is resistant to gas (Propane or NG).

Install a sediment trap in the supply line where it is within reach for cleaning and not likely to freeze.

Avoid damage to the regulator by holding the gas regulator with a wrench when connecting into gas piping or fittings.

Test all gas piping and connections for leaks after installing or servicing.

Never use an open flame to check for a leak.

Apply a mixture of liquid soap and water to all joints. If bubbles form, there may be a leak.

Correct all leaks immediately.

Perform pressure testing on the gas supply piping system. If test pressures exceed 1/2 PSIG (3.5kPa), disconnect the heater. If equal to or less than 1/2 PSIG, close the equipment shutoff valve.

It is very important to install the logs exactly as instructed. Do not modify logs. Use only logs supplied with the heater. Follow these steps for the 5 provided logs:

1. Insert log #1 onto the rear row of pins on the base pan.

2. Insert log #2 onto the front left pin on the base pan.

3. Insert log #3 onto the front right pin on the base pan.

4. Insert log #4 onto the left pin of log #1 and the pin of log #2.

5. Insert log #5 onto the right pin of log #1 and the pin of log #3.

After installation and periodically thereafter, check to ensure that no yellow flame comes in contact with any log. Yellow flames contacting logs will create soot.

Follow these instructions exactly:

1. STOP! Read the safety information regarding gas smells.

2. Open the lower access panel located below the fireplace screen.

3. Turn the control knob clockwise to the “OFF” position.

4. Wait five (5) minutes to clear out any gas. Then smell for gas, including near the floor. If you smell gas, STOP! Follow safety instructions. If you don’t smell gas, proceed.

5. Turn the control knob counterclockwise to the “PILOT” position. Depress the control knob.

6. With the control knob depressed, push down on the ignitor button until the pilot lights. The pilot is located behind the fireplace screen, centered near the rear of the burner.

7. Keep the control knob depressed for (30) seconds after the pilot lights. Release the control knob. If the knob does not pop up, stop and call a technician. If the pilot goes out, repeat steps 3 through 7.

8. Turn the control knob counterclockwise to the desired setting.

9. Close the lower access panel.

1. Open the lower access panel located under the fireplace screen.

2. Turn the control knob clockwise to the “OFF” position.

3. Close the lower access panel.

To operate the system in the manual “MODE” do the following:

ON OPERATION: Press the ON key. The appliance flame will come on. During this time the LCD screen will show ON. After 3 seconds the LCD screen will default to display room temperature and the word TEMP will show.

OFF OPERATION: Press the OFF key. The appliance flame will shut off. During this time the LCD screen will show OF. After 3 seconds the LCD screen will default to display room temperature and the word TEMP will show.

Setting Desired Room Temperature:

Press the MODE key until the LCD screen shows the word ROOM. The remote is now in thermostatic mode.

Press and hold the SET key until the desired set temperature is reached. The numbers will increase from 45 degrees F to 99 degrees F and then restart over at 45.

Release the SET key. The LCD screen will display the set temperature for 3 seconds, flash for 3 seconds, and then default to display the room temperature.

To Change Set Temperature: Press and hold the SET key until the new desired temperature is reached.

To Disengage Thermo Mode: Press the MODE key. The word ROOM will disappear from the LCD screen.

Turn off the heater and let it cool before servicing.

1. Shut off the unit including the pilot. Allow the unit to cool for at least 30 minutes.

2. Inspect the burner, pilot, and primary air inlet holes on the orifice holder for dust and dirt.

3. Blow air through the ports/slots and holes in the burner.

4. Check the orifice holder located at the end of the burner tube. Remove any large particles of dust, dirt, lint, or pet hair with a soft cloth or vacuum cleaner nozzle.

5. Blow air into the primary air holes on the orifice holder.

6. Clean the pilot assembly. A yellow tip on the pilot flame indicates dust and dirt. Use compressed air to blow through the small pilot air inlet hole.

It is recommended to clean the unit every three months during operation and have it inspected yearly by a qualified service person.

Possible Causes and Corrective Actions:

Ignitor electrode is positioned wrong: Replace electrode.

Ignitor electrode is broken: Replace electrode.

Ignitor electrode is not connected to ignitor cable: Replace ignitor cable.

Ignitor cable is pinched or wet: Free ignitor cable if pinched by any metal or tubing. Keep ignitor cable dry.

Damaged ignitor cable: Replace ignitor cable.

Bad piezo ignitor: Replace piezo ignitor.

Possible Causes and Corrective Actions:

Gas supply is turned off or equipment shutoff valve is closed: Turn on gas supply or open equipment shutoff valve.

Control knob not fully pressed in while pressing ignitor button: Fully press in control knob while pressing ignitor button.

Air in gas lines when installed: Continue holding down control knob. Repeat igniting operation until air is removed.

ODS / pilot is clogged: Clean ODS/pilot or replace ODS/pilot assembly.

Control knob not in PILOT position: Turn control knob to PILOT position.

Possible Causes and Corrective Actions:

Control knob is not fully pressed in: Press in control knob fully.

Control knob is not pressed in long enough: After ODS/pilot lights, keep control knob pressed in 30 seconds.

Equipment shutoff valve is not fully open: Fully open equipment shutoff valve.

Thermocouple connection is loose: Hand tighten until snug, and then tighten 1/4 turn more.

Thermocouple damaged: Replace thermocouple.

Control valve damaged: Contact customer service.

Possible Causes and Corrective Actions:

Heater is burning vapors from paint, hair spray, glues, etc.: Ventilate room. Stop using odor-causing products while heater is running.

Gas leak: Locate and correct all leaks.

Low fuel supply: Refill supply tank (if using Propane models).
