If you smell gas, follow these steps immediately:

1. Do not try to light any appliance.

2. Do not touch any electrical switch; do not use any phone in your building.

3. Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions.

4. If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department.

Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids in the vicinity of this or any other appliance.

You must determine if you have a confined or unconfined space to ensure adequate ventilation. Follow these steps:

1. Determine the volume of the space: Length × Width × Height = cu. ft. (volume of space).

2. Divide the space volume by 50 cu. ft. to determine the maximum BTU/hr the space can support. (Formula: Volume of space ÷ 50 cu. ft. = Maximum BTU/hr).

3. Add the BTU/hr of all fuel-burning appliances in the space (Vent-free heater, Gas water heater, Gas furnace, Vented gas heater, Gas heater logs, Other gas appliances). Do not include direct-vent gas appliances.

4. Compare the maximum BTU/hr the space can support with the actual amount of BTU/hr used.

If the actual BTU/hr used is more than the maximum BTU/hr the space can support, the space is a confined space, and you must provide additional fresh air. If the actual BTU/hr used is less, the space is unconfined and no additional fresh air ventilation is needed.

You must maintain the following minimum clearances:

Side Wall and Combustible Material: 6 inches from the side of the fireplace cabinet to any combustible material or wall.

Ceiling: Clearances from the top of the fireplace opening to the ceiling should not be less than 36 inches.

General: Never install the heater where curtains, furniture, clothing, or other flammable objects are less than 42 inches from the front, top, or sides of the heater.

It is very important to install the logs exactly as instructed. Do not modify logs. Use only logs supplied with the heater.

Step 1: Insert log #1 onto the rear row of pins on the base pan.

Step 2: Insert log #2 onto the front left pin on the base pan.

Step 3: Insert log #3 onto the front right pin on the base pan.

Step 4: Insert log #4 onto the left pin of log #1 and the pin of log #2.

Step 5: Insert log #5 onto the right pin of log #1 and the pin of log #3.

Warning: Failure to position the parts in accordance with these diagrams or failure to use only parts specifically approved with this heater may result in property damage or personal injury.

Follow these instructions exactly to light the pilot:

1. Open the lower access panel located below the fireplace screen.

2. Turn the control knob clockwise to the “OFF” position.

3. Wait five (5) minutes to clear out any gas. Then smell for gas, including near the floor. If you smell gas, STOP! Follow the safety instructions regarding what to do if you smell gas. If you don’t smell gas, proceed.

4. Turn the control knob counterclockwise to the “PILOT” position. Depress the control knob.

5. With the control knob depressed, push down on the ignitor button until the pilot lights. The pilot is located behind the fireplace screen, centered near the rear of the burner.

6. Keep the control knob depressed for thirty (30) seconds after the pilot lights. Release the control knob.

7. If the control knob does not pop up when released, stop and immediately call a qualified service technician or gas supplier.

8. If the pilot goes out, repeat steps 3 through 7. Wait one (1) minute before attempting to light the pilot again.

Once the pilot is lit and the control knob is released:

1. Turn the control knob counterclockwise to the desired setting.

2. Close the lower access panel.

To turn off the appliance:

1. Open the lower access panel located under the fireplace screen.

2. Turn the control knob clockwise to the “OFF” position.

3. Close the lower access panel.

To operate the system in the manual “MODE”:

ON OPERATION: Press the ON key. The appliance flame will come on. During this time the LCD screen will show ON. After 3 seconds the LCD screen will default to display room temperature and the word TEMP will show. (Flame icon will appear on LCD screen in manual on mode).

OFF OPERATION: Press the OFF key. The appliance flame will shut off. During this time the LCD screen will show OF. After 3 seconds the LCD screen will default to display room temperature and the word TEMP will show.

To use the thermostat function:

1. Press the MODE key until the LCD screen shows the word ROOM. The remote is now in thermostatic mode.

2. Press and hold the SET key until the desired set temperature is reached. (By pressing and holding the set key, the LCD screen set numbers will increase from 45 degrees to 99 degrees then restart over at 45 degrees).

3. Release the SET key. The LCD screen will display the set temperature for 3 seconds and flash, then default to display the room temperature.

4. To disengage the thermo mode, press the MODE key. The word ROOM on the LCD screen will not show when the thermo is not in operation.

If the system does not respond to the transmitter or if batteries are replaced, follow these steps:

1. Ensure the slide button on the receiver is in the REMOTE position.

2. Use a small screwdriver or paperclip to gently press and release the black LEARN button inside the small hole labeled LEARN on the front face of the receiver.

3. The receiver will emit an audible “beep”.

4. Immediately press ANY button on the transmitter and release.

5. The receiver will emit several beeps indicating that the transmitter’s code has been accepted.

We recommend cleaning the unit every three months during operation and having it inspected yearly by a qualified service person.

To clean the burner and pilot:

1. Shut off the unit including the pilot. Allow the unit to cool for at least 30 minutes.

2. Inspect burner, pilot, and primary air inlet holes on the orifice holder for dust and dirt.

3. Blow air through the ports/slots and holes in the burner using compressed air (no greater than 30 PSI). You may also use a vacuum cleaner nozzle to remove large particles.

4. Clean the pilot assembly. A yellow tip on the pilot flame indicates dust and dirt. Lightly blow air through the small pilot air inlet hole about 2 inches from where the pilot flame comes out. You may use a drinking straw if compressed air is not available.

This issue may be caused by the following:

• Ignitor electrode is positioned wrong (Corrective Action: Replace electrode).
• Ignitor electrode is broken (Corrective Action: Replace electrode).
• Ignitor electrode is not connected to ignitor cable (Corrective Action: Replace ignitor cable).
• Ignitor cable is pinched or wet (Corrective Action: Free ignitor cable if pinched by any metal or tubing. Keep ignitor cable dry).
• Damaged ignitor cable (Corrective Action: Replace ignitor cable).
• Bad piezo ignitor (Corrective Action: Replace piezo ignitor).

If the pilot lights but goes out when the knob is released, consider the following:

• Control knob is not fully pressed in (Corrective Action: Press in control knob fully).
• Control knob is not pressed in long enough (Corrective Action: After ODS/pilot lights, keep control knob pressed in 30 seconds).
• Equipment shutoff valve is not fully open (Corrective Action: Fully open equipment shutoff valve).
• Thermocouple connection is loose (Corrective Action: Hand tighten until snug, and then tighten 1/4 turn more).
• Thermocouple damaged (Corrective Action: Replace thermocouple).
• Control valve damaged (Corrective Action: Contact customer service).

Unwanted odors may be caused by:

• Heater burning vapors from paint, hair spray, glues, etc. (Corrective Action: Ventilate room. Stop using odor-causing products while heater is running).
• Gas leak (Corrective Action: Locate and correct all leaks).
• Low fuel supply (Corrective Action: Refill supply tank).

Burner backfiring can be caused by:

• Burner orifice is clogged or damaged (Corrective Action: Clean burner orifice or contact customer service).
• Burner is damaged (Corrective Action: Contact dealer or customer service).
• Gas regulator is damaged (Corrective Action: Replace gas regulator).

A high yellow flame indicates:

• Not enough air (Corrective Action: Check burner for dirt and debris. If found, clean burner).
• Gas regulator is defective (Corrective Action: Replace gas regulator).
• Inlet gas pressure is too low (Corrective Action: Contact your gas supplier).
