Please consider the following points for your CASIO FX-82MS calculator:

• The displays and illustrations (such as key markings) are for illustrative purposes only, and may differ somewhat from the actual items they represent.

• The contents of this manual are subject to change without notice.

• Be sure to keep all user documentation handy for future reference.

Perform the following procedure to initialize the CASIO FX-82MS calculator, which returns the calculation mode and setup to their initial default settings. Note that this operation also clears all data currently in the calculator memory.

Press: ON SHIFT MODE (CLR) 3 (All)

Battery

• Keep batteries out of the reach of small children.

• Use only the type of battery specified for this calculator in this manual.

• Dim figures on the display of the calculator indicate that battery power is low. Continued use of the calculator when the battery is low can result in improper operation. Replace the battery as soon as possible when display figures become dim. Even if the calculator is operating normally, replace the battery at least once every two years.

• A dead battery can leak, causing damage to and malfunction of the calculator. Never leave a dead battery in the calculator.

• The battery that comes with the calculator discharges slightly during shipment and storage. Because of this, it may require replacement sooner than the normal expected battery life.

• Avoid use and storage of the calculator in areas subjected to temperature extremes, and large amounts of humidity and dust.

• Do not subject the calculator to excessive impact, pressure, or bending.

• Never try to take the calculator apart.

• Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the calculator.

• Whenever discarding the calculator or batteries, be sure to do so in accordance with the laws and regulations in your particular area.

Before using the CASIO FX-82MS calculator, slide its hard case downwards to remove it, and then affix the hard case to the back of the calculator.

• Press ON to turn on the calculator.

• Press SHIFT AC (OFF) to turn off the calculator.

Your CASIO FX-82MS calculator will turn off automatically if you do not perform any operation for about 10 minutes (Auto Power Off).

1. Press the MODE key a number of times until you reach the setup screen showing “Disp”.

2. Press 2.

3. Use the left and right arrow keys to adjust contrast.

4. After the setting is the way you want, press AC.

Important: If adjusting display contrast does not improve display readability, it probably means that battery power is low. Replace the battery.

You can set the CASIO FX-82MS to different modes for different types of operations. The initial default calculation mode is the COMP Mode.

Pressing the MODE key more than once displays additional setup screens. Underlined settings are initial defaults.

Angle Unit (Deg Rad Gra)

Specifies degrees, radians or grads as the angle unit for value input and calculation result display.

Display Digits (Fix Sci Norm)

Specifies the number of digits for display of a calculation result.

• Fix: The value you specify (from 0 to 9) controls the number of decimal places for displayed calculation results. Calculation results are rounded off to the specified digit before being displayed. Example: 100 ÷ 7 = 14.286 (Fix 3)

• Sci: The value you specify (from 1 to 10) controls the number of significant digits for displayed calculation results. Calculation results are rounded off to the specified digit before being displayed. Example: 1 ÷ 7 = 1.4286 × 10⁻¹ (Sci 5)

• Norm: Selecting one of the two available settings (Norm 1, Norm 2) determines the range in which results will be displayed in non-exponential format. Outside the specified range, results are displayed using exponential format.
Norm 1: 10⁻² > |x|, |x| ≥ 10¹⁰
Norm 2: 10⁻⁹ > |x|, |x| ≥ 10¹⁰

Fraction Display Format (ab/c d/c)

Specifies either mixed fraction (ab/c) or improper fraction (d/c) for display of fractions in calculation results.

Decimal Point Format (Dot Comma)

Specifies whether to display a dot or a comma for the calculation result decimal point. A dot is always displayed during input.

To initialize the calculator and return the calculation mode to COMP and all other settings to their initial defaults, perform the following procedure:

Press: ON SHIFT MODE (CLR) 2 (Mode)

You can input expressions and values for calculation. The memory area for calculation input can hold 79 “steps”. One step is taken up each time you press a number key or arithmetic operator key. A SHIFT or ALPHA key operation does not take up a step. When you input the 73rd step, the cursor changes from “_” to “■” to let you know memory is running low.

Calculation Priority Sequence

When the priority of two expressions is the same, the calculation is performed from left to right.

• To delete a single character or function: Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the character and press DEL.

• To insert a character or function into a calculation: Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the position where you want to insert, press SHIFT DEL (INS), and then input the character or function. The cursor will change from “_” to “I”.

• To clear all of the calculation you are inputting: Press AC.

You can perform calculations involving fractions using the a b/c key.

Example: To calculate 2 3/4 + 1/2:

Press: 2 a b/c 3 a b/c 4 + 1 a b/c 2 =

Result: 3」1」4 (which is 3 1/4)

Notes:

• Mixing fractions and decimal values in a calculation will cause the result to be displayed as a decimal value.

• To switch a calculation result between improper fraction and mixed fraction format: Press SHIFT a b/c (d/c).

• To switch a calculation result between fraction and decimal format: Press a b/c.

• To calculate 20% of 150:

Press: 150 × 20 SHIFT = (%)

Result: 30.

• To calculate what percentage of 880 is 660:

Press: 660 ÷ 880 SHIFT = (%)

Result: 75.

• To increase 2500 by 15%:

Press: 2500 × 15 SHIFT = (%) +

Result: 2875.

• To discount 3500 by 25%:

Press: 3500 × 25 SHIFT = (%) –

Result: 2625.

• To find the percentage change when a value is increased from 40 to 46:

Press: 46 – 40 SHIFT = (%)

Result: 15.

You can perform sexagesimal (degrees, minutes, seconds) calculations using the ° ’ ” key.

The input format is: {degrees} ° ’ ” {minutes} ° ’ ” {seconds} ° ’ ”. You must always input something for the degrees and minutes, even if they are zero.

Example: To add 2°20’30” + 39’30”

Press: 2 ° ’ ” 20 ° ’ ” 30 ° ’ ” + 0 ° ’ ” 39 ° ’ ” 30 ° ’ ” =

Result: 3°0’0.”

Example: To convert 2°15’18” to its decimal equivalent.

Press: 2 ° ’ ” 15 ° ’ ” 18 ° ’ ” =

Result: 2.255

To convert a decimal value back to sexagesimal, press SHIFT ° ’ ”.

You can use the colon character (:) to connect two or more expressions and execute them in sequence from left to right when you press =.

To input the colon, press ALPHA Pol (:).

Example: 3 + 3 : 3 × 3

Pressing = will first show the result of 3+3 (6), and pressing = again will show the result of 3×3 (9).

A simple key operation transforms a displayed value to engineering notation. This shifts the decimal point and expresses the number in powers of 10³ (kilo, mega, giga, etc.) or 10⁻³ (milli, micro, nano, etc.).

Example: Transform the value 1234 to engineering notation.

1. Input 1234 and press =. Display shows 1234.

2. Press ENG. Display shows 1.234×10³.

3. Press ENG again. Display shows 1234.×10⁰.

In the COMP Mode, the calculator remembers up to approximately 150 bytes of data for the newest calculation. You can scroll through calculation history contents using the up (▲) and down (▼) arrow keys.

Note: Calculation history data is all cleared whenever you press ON, when you change to a different calculation mode, or whenever you initialize modes and settings.

While a calculation result is on the display, you can press the left (◄) or right (►) arrow key to edit the expression you used for the previous calculation.

The last calculation result obtained is stored in Ans (answer) memory. Ans memory contents are updated whenever a new calculation result is displayed. You can use the “Ans” key in subsequent calculations.

Example: To divide the result of 3 × 4 by 30.

1. Press 3 × 4 =. The result, 12, is stored in Ans memory.

2. Press (Continuing) ÷ 30 =. The display shows Ans÷30, and the result is 0.4.

Your calculator has eight preset variables named A, B, C, D, E, F, X, and Y. Variable contents are retained even if you press AC, change the calculation mode, or turn off the calculator.

• To assign a value to a variable: [value] SHIFT RCL (STO) [variable letter].
Example: To assign the result of 3 + 5 to variable A, press: 3 + 5 SHIFT RCL (STO) A.

• To recall the contents of a variable: RCL [variable letter] or ALPHA [variable letter].
Example: To recall the contents of variable A, press: RCL A or ALPHA A.

• To clear the contents of a variable: Assign 0 to it.
Example: To clear variable A, press: 0 SHIFT RCL (STO) A.

You can add calculation results to or subtract results from independent memory. The “M” indicator appears on the display when there is any value other than zero stored in independent memory.

• To clear the contents of M: Press 0 SHIFT RCL (STO) M.

• To add the result of an expression to M: [expression] M+.
Example: To add the result of 10 × 5 to M, press: 10 × 5 M+.

• To subtract the result of an expression from M: [expression] SHIFT M+ (M-).
Example: To subtract the result of 10 + 5 from M, press: 10 + 5 SHIFT M+ (M-).

• To recall the contents of M: Press RCL M.

Independent memory and variable contents are retained even if you press AC, change the calculation mode, or turn off the calculator. To clear the contents of all memories (Independent Memory, Variables, and Answer Memory), perform the following procedure:

Press: ON SHIFT MODE (CLR) 1 (Mcl)

Here are examples of various function calculations. Ensure you are in the correct angle unit mode (Deg, Rad, Gra) for trigonometric calculations.

• sin 30° = 0.5 (Angle unit: Deg): Press sin 30 =

• sin⁻¹ 0.5 = 30° (Angle unit: Deg): Press SHIFT sin (sin⁻¹) 0.5 =

• sinh 1 = 1.175201194: Press hyp sin (sinh) 1 =

• cosh⁻¹ 1 = 0: Press hyp SHIFT cos (cosh⁻¹) 1 =

• π/2 radians = 90° (Angle unit: Deg): Press SHIFT EXP (π) ÷ 2 = SHIFT Ans (DRG) 2 (R) =

• log 1000 = 3: Press log 1000 =

• ln 90 = 4.4998… (natural log): Press ln 90 =

• 1.2 × 10³ = 1200: Press 1.2 EXP 3 =

• (5²)³ = 15625: Press ( 5 x² ) x³ =

• ³√(5³) = 5: Press SHIFT x³ (³√) ( 5 x³ ) =

• Convert rectangular coordinates (1, √3) to polar coordinates (r, θ) (Angle unit: Deg): Press Pol( 1 , SHIFT ) (,) √ 3 ) =. The value of r (2) is displayed first. Press RCL F (tan) to display the value of θ (60).

• Convert polar coordinates (2, 60°) to rectangular coordinates (x, y) (Angle unit: Deg): Press SHIFT Pol( (Rec() 2 , SHIFT ) (,) 60 ) =. The value of x (1) is displayed first. Press RCL F (tan) to display the value of y (1.732050808).

• Factorial function (10!): Press 10 SHIFT x⁻¹ (x!) =

• Permutations (10P3): Press 10 SHIFT × (nPr) 3 =

• Combinations (10C3): Press 10 SHIFT ÷ (nCr) 3 =

1. Enter the correct mode:

• For single-variable statistics, press MODE 2 (SD).

• For paired-variable statistics (regression), press MODE 3 (REG). Then select the regression type (Lin, Log, Exp, Pwr, Inv, Quad).

2. Clear Statistical Memory: Before inputting new data, always clear the statistical memory by pressing SHIFT MODE (CLR) 1 (Scl) =.

3. Input Data:

• SD Mode: Input data using the format [data] M+.

• REG Mode: Input data using the format [x-data] , [y-data] M+.

• To input multiple entries of the same data, use the format: [data] SHIFT , (;) [number of times] M+.

After inputting your data in SD or REG mode, you can recall various statistical values using the S-SUM and S-VAR keys.

In REG mode, additional variables for y-data and xy-pairs are available under SHIFT S-SUM and SHIFT S-VAR.

Based on the regression formula determined by the data you input in REG mode, you can calculate estimated values for x and y.

After inputting your data, you can find the estimated value ŷ for a given x-value, or the estimated value x̂ for a given y-value.

• To find ŷ for a given x: [x-value] SHIFT S-VAR ► ► 2 (ŷ)

• To find x̂ for a given y: [y-value] SHIFT S-VAR ► ► 1 (x̂)

Calculation Range: ±1 × 10⁻⁹⁹ to ±9.999999999 × 10⁹⁹ or 0.

Number of Digits for Internal Calculation: 12 digits.

Precision: In general, ±1 at the 10th digit for a single calculation. Precision for exponential display is ±1 at the least significant digit. Errors are cumulative in the case of consecutive calculations.

Function Calculation Input Ranges and Precision

The display of an error message means that further calculation is impossible. Press the AC key to return to the calculation screen. The calculator will not clear the calculation history or Ans memory when an error occurs. You can display the calculation and correct it if necessary.

Perform the following steps whenever an error occurs during a calculation or when calculation results are not what you expected. Note that you should make separate copies of important data before performing these steps.

1. Check the calculation expression to make sure it does not contain any errors.

2. Make sure that you are using the correct mode for the type of calculation you are trying to perform.

3. If the above steps do not correct your problem, press the ON key.

4. Initialize all modes and settings. See “Initializing Calculator Settings”.

Notes on replacement:

• Replacing the battery will cause the contents of the calculator’s memory to be deleted.

• Press SHIFT AC (OFF) to turn off the calculator.

• To ensure that you do not accidentally turn on power while replacing the battery, slide the hard case onto the front of the calculator.

1. Remove the two screws that hold the back cover in place, and then remove the back cover.

2. Remove the old battery.

3. Wipe a new battery with a dry cloth, and then load it into the calculator with its plus (+) and minus (–) ends facing correctly.

4. Replace the back cover and secure it in place with the two screws.

5. Initialize the calculator: ON SHIFT MODE (CLR) 3 (All) =. Do not skip this step!
