To initialize your CASIO FX-220 PLUS, which clears the calculation mode and all other settings back to their initial defaults, press the following keys:

SHIFT MODE 3 (All) =

This operation will clear all data currently in the calculator’s memory and reset all settings.

Please adhere to the following safety precautions:

Battery

• Keep batteries out of the reach of small children.

• Use only the type of battery specified for this calculator in this manual.

To ensure the longevity and proper functioning of your CASIO FX-220 PLUS, please observe the following handling precautions:

• Even if the calculator is operating normally, replace the battery at least once every three years for the fx-82SX PLUS/220 PLUS. A dead battery can leak, causing damage to and malfunction of the calculator. Never leave a dead battery in the calculator.

• The battery that comes with the calculator discharges slightly during shipment and storage. Because of this, it may require replacement sooner than the normal expected battery life.

• Avoid use and storage in areas subjected to temperature extremes, and large amounts of humidity and dust.

• Do not subject the calculator to excessive impact, pressure, or bending.

• Never try to take the calculator apart.

• Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the calculator.

• Whenever disposing of the calculator or batteries, be sure to do so in accordance with the laws and regulations in your particular area.

Before using the calculator, slide its hard case downwards to remove it, and then affix the hard case to the back of the calculator as shown in the illustration in the user guide.

• To turn the calculator on, press the ON key.

• To turn the calculator off, press SHIFT AC (OFF).

The calculator also has an Auto Power Off function that will turn it off automatically if you do not perform any operation for about 6 minutes.

Follow these steps to adjust the display contrast:

1. Press MODE four times to reach the contrast adjustment screen.

2. Press 2.

3. Use the ◄ key to make the contrast lighter and the ► key to make it darker.

4. After achieving the desired setting, press AC to exit.

It is important to adjust the contrast when you find it difficult to read the display.

The display of your CASIO FX-220 PLUS shows the expression you are inputting and the result of the calculation. Various indicators also appear on the screen to show the current status of the calculator.

Display Structure:

• Input expression: The formula or values you are entering.

• Calculation result: The answer to your calculation.

Indicators:

• S: Shift key pressed.

• A: Alpha key pressed.

• M: Independent memory has a value.

• STO: Storing a value to a variable.

• RCL: Recalling a value from a variable.

• D / R / G: Default angle unit (Degrees / Radians / Grads).

• FIX: Fixed number of decimal places.

• SCI: Fixed number of significant digits.

• Math: Natural display mode.

• ◄ / ►: More of the expression is available to the left or right.

• Disp: Display setup screen is active.

You must enter the correct mode before starting a calculation. To specify a calculation mode, press the MODE key one or more times until you see the mode selection screen, then press the number key corresponding to your desired mode.

The available modes are:

The default calculation mode is COMP mode.

Pressing the MODE key multiple times will display additional setup screens. Below are the available settings.

To initialize the calculator settings, press SHIFT MODE 2 (Mode) =. This will reset the angle unit to Degrees, the display format to Norm 1, and the fraction display to a b/c.

To set the default angle unit (Degrees, Radians, or Grads), follow these steps:

1. Press MODE three times until you see “Deg Rad Gra”.

2. Press the number corresponding to your desired unit:

• 1 for Degrees (D)

• 2 for Radians (R)

• 3 for Grads (G)

To specify the number of digits for displaying calculation results, follow these steps:

1. Press MODE three times until you see “Fix Sci Norm”.

2. Press the number corresponding to the display format you want:

• 1 (Fix): This prompts you to specify a number of decimal places from 0 to 9. Calculation results are rounded off to the specified place.

• 2 (Sci): This prompts you to specify a number of significant digits from 0 to 9. Calculation results are displayed in scientific notation and rounded off to the specified number of digits.

• 3 (Norm): This selects normal display format. There are two settings (Norm 1 and Norm 2). Norm 1 is the default and switches to exponential format for results outside the range |x| < 10^10 or |x| ≥ 10^-2. Norm 2 switches outside the range |x| < 10^10 or |x| ≥ 10^-9.

To clear the Fix or Sci setting, select Norm by pressing MODE MODE MODE 3 1.

To change how fractions are displayed in calculation results, follow these steps:

1. Press MODE three times, then press the ► key to see the display format screen.

2. Press 1 to select between mixed fraction (a b/c) and improper fraction (d/c).

3. Press 1 to select a b/c or 2 to select d/c.

Inputting Expressions:

Simply key in your calculation as you would write it. For example, to calculate 2(5+4), you would press 2 ( 5 + 4 ) =.

Correcting Expressions:

• Use the ◄ and ► keys to move the cursor to the part of the expression you want to change.

• Press DEL to delete the character at the cursor’s position.

• Press SHIFT DEL (INS) to switch to insert mode, allowing you to type characters without overwriting existing ones. Press it again to return to overwrite mode.

Replay Function:

• After a calculation is executed, press the ▲ or ▼ key to display the expression you just executed. You can then use the ◄ and ► keys to edit the expression and execute it again.

You can connect two or more expressions with a colon (:) to form a multi-statement. The expressions are executed from left to right. To create a colon, press ALPHA . (:).

For example: To add 2 and 3 and then multiply the result by 4, you can input:

2 + 3 ALPHA . (:) Ans × 4 =

The first result is 5, and the second result is 20.

Fraction Calculations:

• Use the a b/c key to input fractions and mixed numbers. For example, to input 2 and 1/4, press 2 a b/c 1 a b/c 4.

• To switch a calculation result between fraction and decimal format, press the a b/c key.

• To switch between mixed fraction and improper fraction format, press SHIFT a b/c (d/c).

Percent Calculations:

• To calculate a percentage of a number (e.g., 20% of 150), input 150 × 20 SHIFT = (%).

• To calculate what percentage one number is of another (e.g., what percentage of 880 is 660), input 660 ÷ 880 SHIFT = (%).

Degrees, Minutes, Seconds (Sexagesimal) Calculations:

• You can perform calculations using sexagesimal (degrees, minutes, seconds) values. To input 2°20’30”, press 2 °’ ” 20 °’ ” 30 °’ “.

• You can also convert a decimal value to sexagesimal. For example, to convert 2.258 to DMS, input 2.258 = SHIFT °’ “.

The Engineering Notation key converts a displayed value to scientific notation where the exponent is a multiple of 3.

• To convert a number to engineering notation, enter the number and press ENG. For example, 1234 = ENG will display 1.234×10³.

• Pressing ENG again will shift the decimal point to the right and decrease the exponent by 3 (e.g., 1234.×10⁰).

• Pressing SHIFT ENG will shift the decimal point to the left and increase the exponent by 3 (e.g., 0.001234×10⁶).

The CASIO FX-220 PLUS stores the expressions and results of your recent calculations in its Calculation History.

• Calculation History: The calculator can store up to 150 bytes of data for the newest calculation. When this limit is reached, older calculations are deleted.

• Replay: After a calculation, press the ▲ and ▼ keys to scroll through your calculation history. When a past calculation is displayed, you can press = to execute it again, or use the ◄ and ► keys to edit it before re-executing.

Pressing the ON key will clear the Calculation History. Note that you cannot change the calculation mode while a replay operation is active.

Answer Memory (Ans):

• The result of the most recent calculation is always stored in the Answer Memory.

• To use this value in a new calculation, press the Ans key. For example, after calculating 3 × 4 = 12, you can calculate 30 – 12 by pressing 30 – Ans =.

Independent Memory (M):

• You can store a value in the independent memory to use in multiple calculations.

• To add the displayed value to memory, press M+.

• To subtract the displayed value from memory, press SHIFT M-.

• To recall the current value in memory, press RCL M.

• To clear the independent memory (set it to 0), press 0 SHIFT STO M. The “M” indicator on the display will disappear.

Your calculator can convert between rectangular coordinates (x, y) and polar coordinates (r, θ). Ensure the correct angle mode (Deg, Rad, Gra) is set before starting.

To convert rectangular coordinates (x, y) to polar coordinates (r, θ):

1. Input Pol( by pressing SHIFT +.

2. Enter the x-value, a comma (SHIFT )), and the y-value. Close the parenthesis and press =.

Example: To convert (√2, √2) to polar coordinates:

Pol( √ 2 SHIFT , √ 2 ) =

3. The value of r will be displayed. To see the value of θ, press SHIFT Rec(y,θ).

To convert polar coordinates (r, θ) to rectangular coordinates (x, y):

1. Input Rec( by pressing SHIFT –.

2. Enter the r-value, a comma (SHIFT )), and the θ-value. Close the parenthesis and press =.

Example: To convert (√2, 45°) to rectangular coordinates:

Rec( √ 2 SHIFT , 45 ) =

3. The value of x will be displayed. To see the value of y, press SHIFT Rec(y,θ).

To generate a random integer within a specified range on your CASIO FX-220 PLUS, use the RanInt# function.

1. Press SHIFT 2 (RanInt#).

2. Enter the minimum value of the range (a).

3. Press SHIFT ) (,) to insert a comma.

4. Enter the maximum value of the range (b).

5. Press =.

For example, to generate a random integer between 1 and 6, you would press:

SHIFT 2 (RanInt#) 1 SHIFT ) (,) 6 =

Pressing = repeatedly will generate more random integers in the same range. The actual results will differ each time.

Calculation Range and Precision

• Calculation Range: ±1 × 10⁻⁹⁹ to ±9.999999999 × 10⁹⁹ or 0.

• Number of Digits for Internal Calculation: 15 digits.

• Precision: In general, ±1 at the 10th digit for a single calculation. For exponential display, precision is ±1 at the least significant digit. Errors are cumulative in consecutive calculations.

Function Calculation Input Ranges and Precision

The calculator will display an error message if a problem occurs during a calculation. You can press AC to clear the error and the calculation. The fx-220 PLUS does not support cursor positioning at the error location.

Math ERROR

• Cause: The intermediate or final result exceeds the allowable calculation range; your input exceeds the allowable input range; you are attempting an illegal mathematical operation (like division by zero).

• Action: Check your input values and reduce the number of digits if necessary. Ensure any variables used are within the allowable range for the function.

Stack ERROR

• Cause: The calculation you are performing has exceeded the capacity of the numeric stack or the command stack.

• Action: Simplify the calculation expression. Try splitting a complex calculation into two or more parts.

Syntax ERROR

• Cause: There is a problem with the format of the calculation you are performing.

• Action: Review your expression and make the necessary corrections to its syntax.

Arg ERROR

• Cause: Improper use of a function argument.

• Action: Correct the argument value provided to the function.

If you encounter an error or if calculation results are not what you expected, perform the following steps. Note that you should make separate copies of any important data before starting.

1. Check the calculation expression to ensure it does not contain any errors.

2. Make sure that you are using the correct mode (COMP, SD, etc.) for the type of calculation you are trying to perform.

3. If the above steps do not correct your problem, press the ON key.

4. Initialize all modes and settings by pressing SHIFT MODE 3 (All) =.

Important: Removing the battery will cause all of the calculator’s memory contents to be deleted.

1. Press SHIFT AC (OFF) to turn off the calculator.

2. Remove the cover by unscrewing the screws that hold it in place.

3. Remove the old battery.

4. Replace the battery with a new one, taking care that its plus (+) and minus (-) ends are facing correctly.

5. Replace the cover and secure it with the screws.

6. Initialize the calculator: Press SHIFT MODE 3 (All) =. Do not skip this step.
