This Quick Reference Guide is not a full description of all operations for the TOYOTA 86 2020. Every owner should review the Owner’s Manual that accompanies the vehicle.

Pay special attention to the boxed information highlighted in color throughout the Owner’s Manual. Each box contains safe operating instructions to help you avoid injury or equipment malfunction.

The following table explains the indicator symbols on the instrument cluster of your TOYOTA 86 2020.

¹ If the indicator does not turn off within a few seconds of starting the engine, there may be a malfunction. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer.

² If the indicator flashes, there may be a malfunction. Refer to the Owner’s Manual.

³ If the indicator flashes, it indicates that the system is operating.

⁴ Vehicle with an automatic transmission.

⁵ Vehicle with a manual transmission.

⁶ If equipped.

To use the keyless entry system, you must carry the Smart Key remote.

Unlocking:

Push the unlock button on the Smart Key remote once to unlock the driver’s door, and twice to unlock all doors.

Alternatively, grasp the driver’s door handle to unlock the driver’s door. This function can be programmed to unlock all doors. Grasping the passenger door handle will unlock all doors.

NOTE: If a door is not opened within 60 seconds of unlocking, all doors will relock for safety.

Locking:

Push the lock button on the Smart Key remote. Alternatively, touch the lock sensor area on the outside door handle to lock all doors.

Trunk Lid:

Push and hold the trunk button on the Smart Key remote. You can also press the button on the trunk itself while carrying the Smart Key.

Panic Button:

Push and hold the panic button on the Smart Key remote to sound an alarm and flash the lights.

The Smart Key must be carried with you to enable the start function.

Automatic Transmission: With the gear shift lever in Park (P) and the brake pedal depressed, push the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.

Manual Transmission: With the gear shift lever in Neutral (N) and the clutch pedal depressed, push the “ENGINE START STOP” switch.

Without depressing the brake pedal (automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal (manual transmission), pressing the “ENGINE START STOP” switch will change the operation mode in the following succession:

On: All electrical components can be used.

Accessory: Some electrical components can be used.

Off: All systems are OFF. Emergency flashers can be used.

To open the fuel tank door, pull up the release lever located on the floor to the left of the driver’s seat.

Turn the fuel cap to open it. After refueling, tighten the cap until one click is heard. If the cap is not tightened enough, the “Check Engine” indicator may illuminate.

1. Pull the hood lock release lever located on the lower left side of the dashboard.

2. At the front of the vehicle, push the latch under the front edge of the hood to the left and raise the hood.

3. Secure the hood with the supporting rod. When holding the supporting rod, hold it by the grip portion.

Use the brightness control dial located on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel. Roll the dial up to make the lights brighter and down to make them darker.

To shift from Park (P), the engine switch must be in the “ON” or “IGNITION ON” position and the brake pedal must be depressed.

Shift Lever Positions:

P: Park

R: Reverse

N: Neutral

D: Drive

M: Manual mode

“M” (Manual) Mode:

Shift the lever from “D” to “M” to enter manual mode. You can then use the shift lever or the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel to change gears.

Push the lever forward (+) or pull the right paddle (+) to upshift.

Pull the lever backward (-) or pull the left paddle (-) to downshift.

To shift into Reverse (R), lift up the ring below the shift knob and move the lever to the R position.

To set the parking brake: Pull the lever up firmly.

To release the parking brake:

1. Pull the lever up slightly.

2. Push the button on the end of the lever.

3. Lower the lever completely.

Automatic Transmission Models:

The mode select switch is located on the center console.

Normal mode: Standard driving mode.

Sport mode: Press the “SPORT” side of the switch for sporty driving, especially in mountainous regions. The “SPORT” indicator will illuminate.

Snow mode: Press the “SNOW” side of the switch for accelerating and driving on slippery surfaces. The “SNOW” indicator will illuminate.

To cancel Sport or Snow mode, press the same side of the switch again to return to normal mode.

“TRACK” Mode (If Equipped):

Normal mode: For secure and smooth normal driving.

“TRACK” mode: For a feeling of added control and maneuverability. Press and hold the “TRACK” switch. The “TRACK” and “VSC OFF” indicators will illuminate. To cancel, press the “TRACK” or “VSC OFF” switch again.

Turning System On/Off: Press the ON-OFF button on the end of the control stalk to turn the system on or off.

Set Speed: Accelerate or decelerate to your desired speed and push the stalk down to the “- SET” position. The “SET” indicator will light up.

Increase Speed: Push the stalk up to the “+ RES” position.

Decrease Speed: Push the stalk down to the “- SET” position.

Resume Speed: After canceling, push the stalk up to the “+ RES” position to resume the previously set speed. The vehicle speed must be over 20 mph.

Cancel: Pull the stalk toward you, or depress the brake pedal or clutch pedal (manual transmission).

Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) helps maintain braking force to assist starting off forward while facing uphill or starting off backward while facing downhill. HAC is initially disabled. You must enable the system to make it operable. The enabled/disabled setting will be maintained the next time the engine is started.

The hill-start assist control ON indicator will illuminate when the system is enabled and will flash while the system is operating. To enable the system, refer to the Owner’s Manual for limitations and more information.

The VSC OFF switch can be used to help free a stuck vehicle in surroundings like mud, dirt, or snow.

While the vehicle is stopped, press the switch to disable the TRAC system. The “TRAC OFF” indicator will illuminate.

To disable both VSC and TRAC systems, press and hold the switch for at least 3 seconds. The “VSC OFF” indicator will illuminate.

The rear view monitor system displays an image of the view from the bumper of the rear area of the vehicle. The camera for the system is located above the license plate.

The rear view image will be displayed on the screen after the shift lever is shifted to Reverse (R).

Headlights:

Rotate the end of the left-hand stalk to select:

OFF: All lights off.

AUTO: Headlights turn on/off automatically based on ambient light.

Parking lights: Turns on parking lights.

Headlights: Turns on headlights.

Push the stalk forward for high beams. Pull it back to its original position for low beams. Pull the stalk toward you to flash the high beams.

Front Fog Lights (If Equipped):

With the headlights on, rotate the inner ring on the stalk to turn the fog lights on.

Turn Signals:

Push the stalk up for a right turn signal or down for a left turn signal. For a lane change, move the stalk partway in the desired direction and release.

Use the right-hand stalk to control the wipers.

Push the stalk up for a single wipe.

Push the stalk down to select:

Interval wipe: The wipers operate intermittently. You can rotate the ring to adjust the wipe frequency.

Slow: Continuous slow wipe.

Fast: Continuous fast wipe.

Pull the stalk toward you to wash and wipe the windshield.

Front Seats:

Seat position (forward/backward): Pull the bar under the front of the seat up and slide the seat to the desired position.

Seatback angle: Pull the lever on the outboard side of the seat cushion and lean forward or back.

Height crank (driver’s side only): Rotate the crank on the outboard side of the seat cushion to raise or lower the seat.

Folding Rear Seats:

1. Pull the release strap located in the trunk.

2. Fold the seatback down.

Head Restraints:

To raise, pull the head restraint up. To lower, push the lock release button and push the head restraint down.

Monochrome Display (If Equipped):

Use the “ODO TRIP” and “DISP” buttons on the instrument cluster.

Push “ODO TRIP” to change between: Odometer, Trip meter, and Setting screen for shift indicators (manual transmission).

Push “DISP” to change between: Outside temperature, Current fuel consumption, Average fuel consumption, and Setting screen for the REV indicator (only displayed when stopped).

Color Display (If Equipped):

Use the meter control switches on the steering wheel to scroll through information screens.

Available screens include: Drive information, Exclusive content for 86 (G-force, Power and torque curve, Stopwatch), Setting display, and Warning message display.

Meter Control Switches (for color display):

< > buttons: Select menu icons.

^ v buttons: Change displayed content, scroll up/down, and move the cursor.

Enter button: Confirms a selection.

Return button: Returns to the previous screen.

Audio Control Switches:

“MODE” button: Push to change audio mode. Push and hold to mute or pause audio.

Volume buttons (+/-): Adjust the volume.

Search buttons (^/v): Use to search within the selected audio feature.

Door Locks:

Use the switch on the driver’s door panel to lock or unlock all doors.

Power Windows:

The driver door window controls operate the windows.

All window auto up/down: Push the switch completely down or pull it completely up and release to fully open or close the window. To stop the window midway, operate the switch in the opposite direction.

Window lock switch: Press this button to deactivate all passenger windows. The driver’s window remains operable.

When starting the engine, the ignition or engine switch may seem stuck in the “LOCK” position.

Without Smart Key: To free it, turn the key while turning the steering wheel slightly left and right.

With Smart Key: A message will be displayed on the multi-information display.

Automatic transmission: Check that the shift lever is in P. Press the engine switch while turning the steering wheel left and right.

Manual transmission: Press the engine switch while turning the steering wheel left and right.

1. Hold the steering wheel and push the lock release lever (located below the steering column) down.

2. Set the desired angle (tilt) and length (telescope).

3. Return the lever to its original position to lock the steering wheel in place.

NOTE: Do not attempt to adjust while the vehicle is in motion.

The engine switch must be in the “ACC” or “ON” position (without Smart Key) / “ACCESSORY” or IGNITION ON” mode (with Smart Key) for use.

Clock:

H: Press to set the hour.

M: Press to set the minute.

:00: Press to round off the minutes to the nearest hour.

Trunk Release:

From inside: Push the trunk opener switch on the dashboard.

From outside (without Smart Key): Push and hold the button on the trunk lid.

The audio system features a touch screen display and several physical buttons.

[POWER/HOME button functions]

Short press: Go to HOME screen.

Long press: Turn off Audio and Display.

Longer press greater than 6 seconds: Option to restart the Multimedia System.

[Volume controls buttons functions]

Short press: Decrease/Increase volume of the current source by one-step.

Long press: Decrease/Increase volume of the current source continuously until the button is released or until minimum/maximum volume is reached.

[Voice recognition button functions]

Short press: Voice recognition in projection or telephone mode.

Long press: Same behavior as a short press.

USB Media Port:

Connecting a compatible device and cable into the USB media port located on the center console will support charging and music playback through the audio multimedia system.

Power Outlets-12V DC:

There are power outlets in the console tray and the glove box. They are designed for car accessories. The engine switch must be in the “ACC” or “ON” position (without Smart Key) / “ACCESSORY” or “IGNITION ON” mode (with Smart Key) for use.

Airflow vent dial (left): Turn to select where air flows (face, feet, etc.). Note that the windshield and windshield/feet modes use outside air only.

Fan speed dial (middle): Turn to adjust fan speed. Push the center button to turn Air Conditioning (A/C) on or off.

Temperature selector dial (right): Turn to select the desired temperature.

Recirculate cabin air button: Press to recirculate air inside the cabin. When off, outside air is drawn in.

Rear window defogger button: Press to defrost the rear window and outside rear view mirrors.

AUTO button: Press for automatic climate control. The system will automatically adjust airflow vents, fan speed, and air intake to maintain the set temperature.

Temperature selector dials (left/right): Turn to set the desired temperature for the driver and front passenger sides.

“DUAL” Zone Climate Control button: When the indicator is ON, you can set separate temperatures for the driver and passenger. When OFF, the settings are synchronized.

OFF button: Turns the climate control system off.

A/C button: Turns the air conditioning compressor on or off.

Other buttons: You can manually override fan speed, airflow vents, air intake (recirculate/fresh), and defoggers.

Seat Heaters (if equipped):

The engine switch must be in “IGNITION ON” mode for use. The switches are on the center console. Press for High (rapid heating) or Low (normal heating).

Cup/Bottle Holders:

Cup Holders: The cup holder in the center console can be adjusted. You can change its position by sliding it, change the tray size, or remove it completely.

Bottle Holders: There are bottle holders located in the door panels.

Ensure the seat belt is not twisted. The lap belt should be positioned as low on the hips as possible, not across the stomach. The shoulder belt should be snug across your chest and shoulder. Take up any slack. Do not position the shoulder belt too high on your neck.

NOTE: If a passenger’s seat belt is fully extended, then retracted even slightly, the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) will prevent it from being re-extended beyond that point, unless fully retracted again. This feature is used to help hold child restraint systems securely.

If tire pressure becomes critically low on any of the tires (excluding the spare), the “(!)” indicator will illuminate. This means one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated. You should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Correctly adjusting tire inflation will turn off the light after a few minutes.

If the light does not turn off, have the system checked by your Toyota dealer.

If the tire pressure indicator flashes for more than 60 seconds and then remains on, there may be a malfunction in the system. Take the vehicle to your local Toyota dealer.

The spare tire and tools are located in the trunk under the floor cover.

Tool Location: The screwdriver, jack handle, towing eyelet, wheel nut wrench, and jack are stored with the spare tire.

Removing the Spare Tire:

1. Remove the spare tire cover.

2. Loosen and remove the bolt that secures the spare tire in place, then lift the tire out.

Your TOYOTA 86 2020 comes standard with the Star Safety System™, which combines several safety technologies:

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS): Helps prevent wheel lockup during hard braking to help you stay in directional control.

Brake Assist (BA): Detects “panic” braking and adds additional brake pressure to help decrease stopping distance.

Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD): Redistributes brake force to enhance braking effectiveness of all four wheels during sudden stops.

Smart Stop Technology (SST): Automatically reduces engine power when the accelerator and brake pedals are pressed simultaneously under certain conditions.

Vehicle Stability Control (VSC): Helps prevent loss of traction during cornering by reducing engine power and applying brake force to selected wheels.

Traction Control (TRAC): Helps maintain traction on loose or slippery surfaces by reducing engine output and applying brakes to the spinning wheel(s).

To keep your floor mat properly positioned, follow these steps:

• Only use Toyota floor mats designed for your specific model.

• Use only one floor mat at a time.

• Secure the mat using the retaining hooks to keep it in place. Always align the marks on the mat with the hooks.

• Install floor mats right side up.

Do not attempt the Bluetooth® Pairing process while driving.

1. On the multimedia system, touch the settings icon on the HOME screen to display the functions menu.

2. Touch on the [Bluetooth®] menu item.

3. Slide the Bluetooth® button to [ON].

4. Touch the search button to start a search for devices that can be paired. The system searches for a maximum of 20 seconds.

5. On the list of located Bluetooth® devices on the screen, select the device you want to pair.

6. Touch [PAIR] on the screen to begin the pairing process. A confirmation message with a key may be shown. Confirm the pairing on your phone as well.

7. Once the pairing process is completed, a confirmation message is shown. Touch [OK] on the message screen to complete the process.

The Multimedia System will automatically initiate the download of contacts, call history, and messages. A maximum of four devices can be paired.
