The following symbols and conventions are used throughout the user’s guide for your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW:

The control panel of your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW includes a touchscreen LCD and a touchpanel with several key functions:

1. Touchscreen Liquid Crystal Display (LCD): Access menus and options by pressing them on the touchscreen.

2. Touchpanel Buttons:

• (Back): Press to go back to the previous menu.

• (Home): Press to return to the Home screen.

• (Cancel): Press to cancel an operation.

3. LED Power Indicator: Lights up depending on the machine’s power status.

4. Power On/Off:

• Turn the machine on by pressing the button.

• Turn the machine off by pressing and holding the button. The touchscreen LCD displays [Shutting Down] and stays on for a few seconds before turning off.

5. Near Field Communication (NFC): Use card authentication, if applicable, by touching your Integrated Circuit Card (IC Card) to the NFC symbol on the machine.

The Home screen on your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW displays the machine’s status and provides access to various features. You can press left or right to display other Home screens.

1. Date & Time: Displays the current date and time set on the machine.

2. Modes:

• [Fax]: Press to access Fax mode.

• [Copy]: Press to access Copy mode.

• [Scan]: Press to access Scan mode.

• [Secure Print]: Press to access the Secure Print option.

• [Web]: Press to connect the Brother machine to an Internet service.

• [Apps]: Press to connect the Brother machine to the Brother Apps service.

• [2 in 1 ID Copy]: Press to access 2in1(ID) Copy option.

3. Toner: Displays the remaining toner life. Press to access the Toner menu.

4. [Settings]: Press to access the Settings menu. A lock icon appears if Setting Lock is on.

5. Wireless Status: Press to configure wireless settings. A four-level indicator displays the current wireless signal strength.

6. [Shortcuts]: Press to create Shortcuts for frequently-used operations. A total of 18 Shortcuts can be created across three tabs.

Stored Fax(es): An icon at the top of the screen shows the number of received faxes in memory. Press the icon and then [Yes] to print the faxes.

Warning icon: Appears when there is an error or maintenance message. Press the message area to view it.

To navigate the touchscreen menus on your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW, press your finger on the LCD to operate it. Use the up, down, left, or right arrows on the screen to scroll through options. Here is an example of changing the LCD Backlight setting from [Light] to [Med]:

1. Press the settings icon on the screen.

2. Press [All Settings].

3. Press the up or down arrow to display the [General Setup] option, and then press [General Setup].

4. Press the up or down arrow to display the [LCD Settings] option, and then press [LCD Settings].

5. Press [Backlight].

6. Press [Med].

7. Press the home icon to return to the main screen.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT press the LCD with a sharp object such as a pen or stylus. It may damage the machine.

NOTE: DO NOT touch the LCD immediately after plugging in the power cord or turning on the machine, as this may cause an error.

When you need to enter text on your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW, a keyboard will appear on the LCD touchscreen.

• To cycle between letters, numbers, and special characters, press the corresponding button (often shown as ‘A 1 @’).

• To cycle between lowercase and uppercase letters, press the button showing ‘aA’.

• To move the cursor left or right, press the left or right arrow keys on the screen.

• To enter a space, press [Space].

Making corrections:

• If you entered a character incorrectly, press the left or right arrow to move the cursor to the incorrect character and press the backspace key. Enter the correct character.

• To insert a character, move the cursor to the correct place and then enter the character.

• Press the backspace key for each character you want to erase, or press and hold it to erase all characters.

To load paper into the standard paper tray of your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW, follow these steps:

1. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

2. Press the green release levers on the paper guides to slide them to fit the size of the paper you are loading.

3. Fan the stack of paper well to prevent jams.

4. Load the paper into the paper tray with the printing surface facing down.

5. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (indicated by three triangles).

6. Slowly push the paper tray completely into the machine.

7. Lift the support flap on the output tray to prevent paper from sliding off.

When printing on special media like envelopes, thick paper, or labels, use the manual feed slot and the face-up output tray on the back of the BROTHER MCF-L2980DW.

1. Open the machine’s back cover (the face-up output tray).

2. On the front of the machine, open the manual feed slot cover.

3. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the media you are using.

4. Using both hands, place one sheet of media (paper, label sheet, or envelope) in the manual feed slot until its front edge touches the paper feed roller. Let go when you feel the machine pull it in.

• Load the media with the printing surface facing up.

• Do not put more than one sheet or envelope in the manual feed slot at a time to prevent jams.

• Make sure the media is straight and in the correct position.

5. Send your print job to the machine, ensuring you have selected the correct media type and paper source in the printer driver settings.

6. After the printed page comes out from the back of the machine, load the next sheet if printing multiple pages.

7. When finished, close the back cover until it locks in the closed position.

Use the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) on your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW for copying or scanning multi-page documents. The ADF can hold up to 50 sheets of standard 80 g/m² paper.

IMPORTANT:

• Do not leave thick documents on the scanner glass, as this can cause the ADF to jam.

• Do not use curled, wrinkled, folded, ripped, stapled, or taped paper.

• Do not use cardboard, newspaper, or fabric.

• Do not pull on the document while it is feeding.

Steps to load documents:

1. Unfold the ADF document output support flap.

2. Fan the pages well.

3. Stagger the pages and load them into the ADF face up and top edge first.

4. Adjust the paper guides to fit the width of your document.

Use the scanner glass on your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW to fax, copy, or scan one page at a time, or for items that cannot be fed through the ADF, such as books.

NOTE: To use the scanner glass, the ADF must be empty.

1. Lift the document cover.

2. Place the document on the scanner glass face down.

3. Align the corner of the page with the upper left corner of the scanner glass, using the guides.

4. Close the document cover. If the document is thick, gently press down on the cover while scanning.

The table below shows the maximum unscannable and unprintable areas from the edges of the most commonly-used paper sizes for the BROTHER MCF-L2980DW. Do not attempt to scan, copy, or print in these areas.

Secure Print ensures that confidential documents do not print until you enter a password on the machine’s control panel. Note that secure data is deleted from the machine when you turn the machine off.

On Your Computer:

1. Select the print command in your application.

2. Select your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW model, and then click the printer’s properties or preferences button.

3. Click the Advanced tab.

4. Click the Settings button in the Secure Print field.

5. Select the Secure Print checkbox.

6. Type a four-digit password in the Password field.

7. Type a user name and job name if needed.

8. Click OK to close the Secure Print Settings window, then click OK again.

9. Complete your print operation.

On Your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW:

1. On the machine’s control panel, press the left or right arrow to display the [Secure Print] option, and then press [Secure Print].

2. Press the up or down arrow to display your user name, and then press your user name.

3. Enter your four-digit password, and then press [OK].

4. The LCD displays the list of secured jobs for your name. Press the up or down arrow to display the print job, and then press it.

5. Enter the number of copies you want, and then press [OK].

6. Press [Start]. The machine prints the data, and the secured data will be cleared from memory after printing.

Your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW can convert characters in a scanned document to editable text using Optical Character Recognition (OCR). To do this from the machine’s control panel, follow these steps:

1. Load your document in the ADF or on the scanner glass.

2. Press [Scan] > [to PC] > [to OCR].

3. If the machine is connected over a network, press the up or down arrow to display the computer where you want to send the data, and then press the computer name.

4. To change scan settings temporarily, press [Options] and select the settings you want to change (e.g., 2-sided Scan, Resolution, etc.). To save the settings as a shortcut for future use, press [Save as Shortcut].

5. Press [Start].

6. The machine starts scanning. If you are using the scanner glass, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the job. The scanned document will be converted to text and opened in your default text-editing application on your computer.

To send a 2-sided document as a fax using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) on your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW, you must select the correct scanning format based on your document’s layout.

1. Load your 2-sided document in the ADF.

2. Do one of the following:

• If Fax Preview is set to [Off], press the [Fax] icon.

• If Fax Preview is set to [On], press the [Fax] icon, and then press [Send a fax].

3. Press [Options] > [2-sided Fax].

4. Do one of the following:

• If your document is flipped on the long edge, press the [2-sided Scan: Long Edge] option.

• If your document is flipped on the short edge, press the [2-sided Scan: Short Edge] option.

5. Press [OK].

6. Enter the recipient’s fax number.

7. Press [Fax Start].

You can use the Fax Forwarding feature on your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW to automatically forward incoming faxes to another fax number or email address.

1. Press [Settings] > [All Settings] > [Fax] > [Setup Receive] > [Memory Receive].

2. Press [Fax Forward].

3. Do one of the following to enter the forwarding destination:

• Press [Manual] to enter the forwarding fax number (up to 20 digits) or email address using the LCD. Press [OK] when done.

• Press [Address Book], press the up or down arrow to display the destination, and then press the destination’s name.

4. To also print a copy of the faxes on your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW, press [Backup Print: On]. Otherwise, you can press [Backup Print: Off].

5. Press the Home key.

NOTE: If you select [Backup Print: On], the machine also prints a copy of received faxes at your machine.

If the LCD on your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW indicates a paper jam inside the machine, follow these steps to clear it:

1. Leave the machine turned on for 10 minutes to allow the internal fan to cool the hot parts inside.

WARNING: HOT SURFACE The machine’s internal parts will be extremely hot. Wait for the machine to cool down before touching them.

2. Open the front cover.

3. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

4. Pull out the jammed paper slowly.

5. Install the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

6. Close the front cover.

When your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW indicates that the toner needs to be replaced, follow these steps:

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

3. Push down the green lock lever and take the old toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

4. Unpack the new toner cartridge and remove its protective cover.

5. Hold the new toner cartridge by the handle and shake it from left to right several times to distribute the toner evenly.

6. Push the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until it locks into place.

7. Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and back to left several times.

8. Ensure the green tab is returned to the Home position (indicated by an arrow).

9. Reinsert the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

10. Close the front cover of the machine. Do not turn the machine off until the display returns to Ready Mode.

IMPORTANT: To avoid print quality problems, do not touch the shaded parts (roller surfaces) of the toner cartridge or drum unit.

When it is time to replace the drum unit on your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW, follow these instructions:

1. Make sure the machine is turned on and open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly.

3. Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the old drum unit.

4. Unpack the new drum unit.

5. Push the toner cartridge firmly into the new drum unit until it locks into place.

6. Reinsert the toner cartridge and new drum unit assembly back into the machine.

7. Close the front cover.

8. After installing the new drum unit, you must reset the drum counter.

After you replace the drum unit with a new one on your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW, you must reset the drum counter. Do not reset the drum counter unless you are replacing the drum unit.

1. Make sure the machine is turned on.

2. Close the front cover of the machine.

3. If an error message is displayed, press the cancel key to clear it.

4. Press the toner icon until the touchscreen message changes.

5. Press [Drum].

6. Press [Yes].

To ensure high-quality scans and copies, clean the scanner components on your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW regularly.

1. Press and hold the power button to turn the machine off.

2. Lift the document cover (1). Clean the white plastic surface (2) and the large scanner glass (3) underneath it with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water.

3. In the ADF unit, clean the white bar (1) and the scanner glass strip (2) underneath it with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water.

4. For automatic 2-sided scanning, open the scanner glass cover (1) and clean the other white bar (2) and scanner glass strip (3).

5. Close the document cover.

6. Press the power button to turn the machine on.

If you have print quality problems, such as a vertical stripe on printed pages, clean the corona wire inside the drum unit of your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW.

1. Open the front cover.

2. Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly from the machine.

3. Clean the corona wire by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left several times.

4. Be sure to return the tab to the Home position (indicated by an arrow). The arrow on the tab must be aligned with the arrow on the drum unit.

5. Reinsert the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly back into the machine.

6. Close the front cover.

You can check the approximate remaining life of your supplies on the BROTHER MCF-L2980DW’s control panel.

1. Press [Settings] > [All Settings] > [Machine Info.] > [Parts Life].

2. The LCD displays the approximate remaining drum life.

3. To display the approximate remaining life of the toner cartridge, press the toner icon on the LCD, and then press [Toner Life].

4. Press the Home key to exit.

If your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW will not print, try the following suggestions:

• Check that the machine is not in Power Off mode. If it is, press the power button and then send the print data again.

• Check that the correct printer driver has been installed and selected in your application.

• Check the machine’s control panel or the Status Monitor on your computer for any error messages.

• Check that the machine is online. For Windows, open “control printers,” right-click your printer’s icon, select “See what’s printing,” and from the “Printer” menu, make sure “Use Printer Offline” is not selected. For Mac, open “System Settings” or “System Preferences,” select “Printers & Scanners,” and if the machine is offline, delete and re-add it.

• If a print job is stuck, cancel it from the machine’s memory and from your computer’s print queue, then try sending the data again.

If your BROTHER MCF-L2980DW is not feeding paper, try these solutions:

• If there is paper in the tray, ensure it is straight. If it is curled, straighten it.

• Remove the paper stack, turn it over, and place it back in the paper tray.

• Fan the stack of paper well before placing it back in the tray.

• Reduce the amount of paper in the paper tray to ensure it is not overfilled.

• Clean the paper pick-up rollers.
