Your VTECH CS6649-2 package contains the following items:

• Telephone base

Follow these steps to connect the telephone base:

1. Plug the telephone line cord into a telephone jack.

2. Plug the small end of the power adapter into the power jack on the bottom of the telephone base.

3. Plug the large end of the power adapter into an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch.

4. Route the cords through the slots on the telephone base.

If you subscribe to DSL high-speed Internet service, a DSL filter (not included) is required. The DSL filter must be plugged into the telephone wall jack.

To mount the telephone base on a wall:

1. Plug the power adapter and telephone line into the base.

2. Position the telephone base so the mounting studs on the wall plate align with the holes on the wall-mount bracket.

3. Slide the telephone base down onto the mounting studs until it locks into place.

4. Bundle the telephone line cord and power adapter cord neatly with twist ties.

Follow these steps to install and charge the handset battery:

1. Plug the battery connector securely into the socket inside the handset battery compartment.

2. Insert the supplied battery with the label THIS SIDE UP facing up, as indicated.

3. Align the cover flat against the battery compartment, then slide it upwards until it clicks into place.

4. Charge the handset by placing it in the telephone base or charger. The CHARGE light on the charger is on when the handset is charging.

For best performance, keep the handset in the telephone base or charger when not in use. The battery is fully charged after 11 hours of continuous charging. It may take up to 16 hours to fully charge the battery before using the telephone for the first time.

You can check the battery status on the handset screen with the following indicators:

Here are the functions of the telephone base controls:

• IN USE light: On when the handset is in use, or when the answering system is answering an incoming call. Flashes when there is an incoming call, or another telephone sharing the same line is in use.

• X/DELETE: Press to delete the message currently playing. Press twice to delete all old messages when the phone is not in use.

• /PLAY/STOP: Press to play messages. Press again to stop message playback.

• /SKIP: Press to skip to the next message.

• /REPEAT: Press to repeat a message. Press twice to play the previous message.

• Message window: Shows the number of messages and other answering system information. The display is blank when the answering system is off.

• VOL /: Press to decrease the listening volume during message playback.

• /VOL: Press to increase the listening volume during message playback.

• /ANS ON: Press to turn the built-in answering system on or off. The light is on when the system is on.

• /FIND HANDSET: Press to page all handsets.

Here are the functions of the handset keys:

• CID/VOLUME: Press to show caller ID log when the phone is not in use. Press to scroll up while in a menu. Press to increase listening volume during a call or message playback.

• /VOLUME: Press to scroll down while in a menu. Press to decrease listening volume during a call or message playback.

• /FLASH: During a call, press to answer an incoming call when you receive a call waiting alert.

• MENU/SELECT: Press to show the menu. While in a menu, press to select an item or save an entry or setting.

• /SPEAKER: Press to make or answer a call using the speakerphone. Press to switch between the speakerphone and the handset earpiece during a call.

• OFF/CANCEL: During a call, press to hang up. While in a menu, press to cancel an operation, back up to the previous menu, or exit the menu display. When the handset is ringing, press to mute the ringer temporarily. Press and hold to erase the missed call indicator while the phone is not in use.

• TONE /a>A: Press to switch to tone dialing temporarily during a call if you have pulse service. While entering numbers, press and hold to insert a dialing pause.

• QUIET#: Press and hold to set and turn on the quiet mode, or turn it off.

• MUTE/DELETE: During a call, press to mute the microphone. When the handset is ringing, press to mute the ringer temporarily. While reviewing the caller ID log, directory, or redial list, press to delete an individual entry. While predialing, press to delete digits.

• INT/HOLD: Press to initiate an intercom conversation or transfer a call. During a call, press to place the call on hold.

• /HOME/FLASH: Press to make or answer a call. During a call, press to answer an incoming call when you receive a call waiting alert.

• REDIAL/PAUSE: Press to review the redial list. Press and hold to insert a dialing pause while entering numbers.

• CHARGE light: On when the handset is charging in the telephone base or charger.

Here is a list of the handset display icons:

• Battery icon: The battery icon animates when the battery is charging. The icon becomes solid when the battery is fully charged. The outline of the battery flashes when the battery is low and needs charging.

• Handset icon: On when the handset is in use during a call.

• Speaker icon: On when the handset speakerphone is on.

• ANS ON icon: On when the built-in answering system is turned on.

• NEW icon: There are new caller ID log entries and/or new voicemail.

• Message icon: There are new answering system messages.

• MUTE icon: The handset microphone is muted.

• Ringer off icon: The handset ringer is off.

• Number of messages: Shows the number of new/old messages recorded.

• Number of new calls: Shows the number of new or missed calls.

Make a call:

• Press /HOME/FLASH or /SPEAKER on the handset, then enter the phone number.

Predial a call:

• Enter the telephone number, then press /HOME/FLASH or /SPEAKER to dial.

Answer a call:

• Press /HOME/FLASH or /SPEAKER, or any dialing key (0-9, TONE , or #).

End a call:

• Press OFF/CANCEL or place the handset in the telephone base or charger.

Use the speakerphone:

• During a call, press /SPEAKER to switch between speakerphone and handset earpiece.

Adjust volume:

• During a call, press CID/VOLUME or /VOLUME to adjust the listening volume.

Mute the microphone:

• During a call, press MUTE/DELETE to mute the microphone. The handset screen shows Muted. Press MUTE/DELETE again to resume the conversation.

You can use up to two handsets at the same time on an outside call. To join a call:

1. When a handset is on a call, press /HOME/FLASH or /SPEAKER on another handset to join the call.

2. To exit the call, press OFF/CANCEL or place the handset in the base or charger. The call continues on the other handset.

If you subscribe to call waiting service from your telephone service provider, you will hear a beep if someone calls while you are already on a call.

• Press /FLASH on the handset to put your current call on hold and take the new call.

• Press /FLASH at any time to switch back and forth between calls.

Press /FIND HANDSET on the telephone base. All idle handsets will ring and display ** Paging **.

To end the paging, press /FIND HANDSET again on the base, or press /HOME/FLASH, /SPEAKER, OFF/CANCEL, or any dialing key on any handset.

Each handset stores the last 10 telephone numbers dialed. To view or dial from the redial list:

1. Press REDIAL/PAUSE. The screen shows the most recently called number.

2. Press CID/, /VOLUME, or REDIAL/PAUSE repeatedly to scroll through the last 10 numbers dialed.

3. To dial the displayed number, press /HOME/FLASH or /SPEAKER.

To delete a redial entry, press MUTE/DELETE while the desired number is displayed.

To initiate an intercom call:

1. Press INT/HOLD on your handset when not in use. The screen shows Intercom to:.

2. If you have more than two handsets, use the dialing keys to select a destination handset.

3. The destination handset rings and shows HANDSET X is calling.

4. To answer the intercom call on the other handset, press /HOME/FLASH, /SPEAKER, or any dialing key.

5. To end the intercom call, press OFF/CANCEL or INT/HOLD on either handset, or place the handset back in the base or charger.

To answer an incoming call during an intercom call:

You will hear an alert tone. The intercom call ends automatically. Press /HOME/FLASH to answer the outside call.

During an outside call, follow these steps to transfer it:

1. Press INT/HOLD. The outside call is put on hold.

2. If you have more than two handsets, select the destination handset.

3. The destination handset rings. When the other person answers, you can talk privately before completing the transfer.

4. To transfer the call, press OFF/CANCEL on your handset or place it back in the base. The other handset is now connected to the outside call.

If the destination handset does not answer within 30 seconds, the transfer is canceled, and your handset will show No answer. You will be reconnected to the outside call.

You can set the display language to English, French, or Spanish.

1. Press MENU/SELECT when the handset is not in use.

2. Press CID/ or /VOLUME to scroll to Settings, then press MENU/SELECT.

3. Press MENU/SELECT to choose Language.

4. Press CID/ or /VOLUME to select English, Français, or Español.

5. Press MENU/SELECT to save your setting.

The date and time are set automatically with incoming Caller ID information. However, you can also set it manually.

1. Press MENU/SELECT when the handset is not in use.

2. Press CID/ or /VOLUME to scroll to Set date/time, then press MENU/SELECT.

3. Use the dialing keys (0-9) to enter the month (MM), day (DD), and year (YY). Then press MENU/SELECT.

4. Use the dialing keys (0-9) to enter the hour (HH) and minute (MM).

5. Press CID/ or /VOLUME to choose AM or PM.

6. Press MENU/SELECT to save.

The directory can store up to 50 entries, which are shared by all handsets.

Create a new directory entry:

1. Enter the telephone number (up to 30 digits) when the phone is not in use, then press MENU/SELECT.

2. Enter a name for the number (up to 15 characters) using the dialing keys. Press the key repeatedly for different characters.

3. Press MENU/SELECT to save.

Review directory entries:

1. Press CID/ when the phone is not in use. The first entry in the directory is shown.

2. Press CID/ or /VOLUME to browse through the directory.

Dial a directory entry:

1. Find the desired entry in the directory.

2. Press /HOME/FLASH or /SPEAKER to dial.

Edit a directory entry:

1. Find the desired entry in the directory.

2. Press MENU/SELECT. The screen shows EDIT NUMBER.

3. Use the dialing keys and MUTE/DELETE to edit the number, then press MENU/SELECT.

4. Edit the name using the dialing keys, then press MENU/SELECT.

Delete a directory entry:

1. Find the desired entry in the directory.

2. Press MUTE/DELETE. The screen shows Delete entry?.

3. Press MENU/SELECT to confirm.

You can assign up to 10 directory entries to speed dial locations (0-9).

Assign a speed dial number:

1. Press MENU/SELECT when the phone is not in use.

2. Scroll to Directory and press MENU/SELECT.

3. Scroll to Speed dial and press MENU/SELECT.

4. Scroll to a desired speed dial location (0-9) and press MENU/SELECT.

5. Scroll to the desired directory entry and press MENU/SELECT to save.

Dial a speed dial number:

• Press and hold the dialing key (0-9) corresponding to the desired entry. The number is dialed automatically.

Delete a speed dial number:

1. Press MENU/SELECT, then go to Directory, then Speed dial.

2. Scroll to the speed dial entry you wish to delete and press MUTE/DELETE.

3. Press MENU/SELECT to confirm.

This feature requires a subscription to caller ID service from your telephone service provider. The phone stores up to 30 entries in the caller ID log.

Review the caller ID log:

1. Press CID/ when the handset is not in use.

2. Press CID/ or /VOLUME to scroll through the log.

View dialing options:

1. When viewing a caller ID entry, press # (pound key) repeatedly to show different dialing options (e.g., 7-digit, 10-digit, 11-digit).

2. Press 1 repeatedly to add or remove 1 in front of the number.

Dial a caller ID log entry:

• When the desired entry is displayed, press /HOME/FLASH or /SPEAKER to call.

Save a caller ID log entry to the directory:

1. Find the desired entry in the caller ID log.

2. Press MENU/SELECT. The screen shows EDIT NUMBER.

3. Press MENU/SELECT again. Edit the name if necessary.

4. Press MENU/SELECT to save.

Delete from the caller ID log:

• To delete a single entry: Display the entry and press MUTE/DELETE.

• To delete all entries: Press and hold OFF/CANCEL when the phone is not in use, then press MENU/SELECT to confirm.

Your VTECH CS6649-2 has a built-in answering system that records messages on the telephone base. For it to answer calls, it must be turned on. The main differences between it and voicemail service (which may be offered by your telephone service provider) are:

Using the telephone base:

• Press /ANS ON to turn the answering system on or off. When it’s on, the light is on and it announces, “Calls will be answered.” When it’s off, it announces, “Calls will not be answered.”

Using a handset:

1. Press MENU/SELECT when the handset is not in use.

2. Scroll to Answering sys and press MENU/SELECT.

3. Press MENU/SELECT again to choose Answer on/off.

4. Press CID/ or /VOLUME to choose On or Off.

5. Press MENU/SELECT to save.

You can record a custom announcement up to 90 seconds long. If you don’t record one, a pre-recorded announcement will be used.

1. Press MENU/SELECT when the handset is not in use.

2. Scroll to Answering sys and press MENU/SELECT.

3. Scroll to Announcement and press MENU/SELECT.

4. The system announces, “To play, press 2. To record, press 7.” Press 7 to record.

5. Speak towards the handset to record your announcement. Press 5 when you are done.

Your recorded announcement will play back automatically. To listen to it again, select Announcement from the Answering sys menu and press 2 to play.

Using the telephone base:

• Press /PLAY/STOP when the phone is not in use. If you have new messages, they will play first. If there are no new messages, all old messages will play.

Playback options on the base:

• /VOL or /VOL: Adjust speaker volume.

• /SKIP: Skip to the next message.

• /REPEAT: Repeat the message currently playing. Press twice to hear the previous message.

• X/DELETE: Delete the current message.

• /PLAY/STOP: Stop playback.

Using a handset:

1. Press MENU/SELECT when the handset is not in use.

2. Select Play messages by pressing MENU/SELECT.

Playback options on the handset:

• /VOLUME or CID/: Adjust speaker volume.

• /HOME/FLASH or /SPEAKER: Switch between handset earpiece and speakerphone.

• 6 or /SKIP: Skip to the next message.

• 4 or /REPEAT: Repeat the current message. Press twice to hear the previous message.

• MUTE/DELETE: Delete the current message.

• 5: Stop playback.

Using the telephone base:

• To delete a single message: Press X/DELETE while the message is playing.

• To delete all old messages: When the phone is not in use, press X/DELETE twice.

Using a handset:

• To delete a single message: Press MUTE/DELETE while the message is playing.

• To delete all old messages: Access the Answering sys menu, select Delete all old, and press MENU/SELECT twice to confirm.

You can access your answering system from any touch-tone phone.

1. Dial your telephone number.

2. When the system plays your announcement, enter your two-digit remote access code. The default code is 19.

3. The system will automatically play new messages. You can then enter remote commands.

4. If you do not press any key after the last message, the call will end automatically.

Remote commands:

Voicemail is a feature available from your telephone service provider and is separate from the built-in answering system. When you have new voicemail, the handset displays New voicemail.

To retrieve your voicemail, you typically dial an access number provided by your telephone service provider, and then enter a security code or PIN. Contact your service provider for instructions on how to configure your voicemail settings and listen to messages.

After listening to all new voicemail messages, the New voicemail indicator on the handset will turn off.

• General care: Your telephone contains sophisticated electronic parts. Handle it with care.

• Avoid rough treatment: Place the handset down gently. Save the original packing materials to protect your telephone if you ever need to ship it.

• Avoid water: Do not use the telephone near water (e.g., bath tub, sink, pool). Do not expose it to rain or moisture.

• Electrical storms: Electrical storms can sometimes cause power surges harmful to electronic equipment. For your own safety, use caution when using electrical appliances during storms.

• Cleaning your telephone: Use a soft, slightly dampened cloth to clean the plastic casing. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners as they may damage the set.

• Make sure the power cord is securely plugged in.

• Make sure the battery connector is securely plugged into the cordless handset.

• Make sure the telephone line cord is securely and firmly plugged into the telephone base and the telephone wall jack.

• Charge the battery in the cordless handset for at least 11 hours. For optimum daily performance, return the cordless handset to the telephone base or charger when not in use.

• If the battery is depleted, it may take about 30 minutes to charge the handset before it shows Low battery. The battery needs up to 11 hours of continuous charging to be fully charged.

• Reset the telephone base. Unplug the unit’s electrical power. Wait for approximately 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Allow up to one minute for the cordless handset and telephone base to sync.

• The battery may be depleted. It might take up to 30 minutes to charge the handset enough for the ‘Low battery’ indicator to appear.

• Make sure the handset is placed in the telephone base or charger correctly. The CHARGE light should be on.

• Clean the charging contacts on the cordless handset, telephone base, and charger each month with a pencil eraser or a dry cloth.

• Try the suggestions mentioned in the troubleshooting section for a non-working phone first.

• Move the cordless handset closer to the telephone base. You might have moved out of range.

• If you have DSL service, you must install a DSL filter between the telephone base and the wall jack.

• Reset the telephone base by unplugging its power, waiting 15 seconds, and plugging it back in.

• Other electronic products, such as HAM radios and other DECT phones, can cause interference with your cordless phone. Try installing your phone as far away as possible from these types of electronic devices.

• First, try all the suggestions for not getting a dial tone.

• Make sure you have a dial tone before dialing.

• If other phones in your home are working, the problem may be with this telephone. Contact customer service for assistance.

• Caller ID is a subscription service. You must subscribe to this service from your telephone service provider for this feature to work.

• The caller must be calling from an area that supports caller ID.

• Both your and the caller’s telephone service providers must use caller ID compatible equipment.

• If you subscribe to high-speed Internet service (DSL) through your telephone line, you must install a DSL filter between the telephone base and the telephone wall jack.

• Make sure the answering system is on. Press /ANS ON on the telephone base; the light should be on.

• When the answering system is on and another handset is on a call, the system will not answer an incoming call.

• If the memory is full, the answering system will announce, “Memory is full” and will not record new messages until some old messages are deleted.

• If your voicemail service is active, it may answer calls before your built-in answering system does. Change the number of rings setting on your answering system so it answers before your voicemail. Typically, this means setting it to answer after two or four rings. If you’re unsure, contact your telephone service provider.
