Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate the SPEED QUEEN SCB50CE drying tumbler according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions that can produce serious injury, death, and/or property damage. Flammable Materials Warning:

To avoid creating any flammable vapors which may explode, ignite or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials in your SPEED QUEEN SCB50CE:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals, or thinner.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

Basic Precautions:

• Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision is necessary when the tumbler is used near children.

Remove the crate and protective cover as soon as possible and check the items listed on the packing list.

Materials Required (Obtain Locally):

For your electric SPEED QUEEN SCB50CE tumbler, you will need to obtain one circuit breaker.

Facilities Required:

• FLOOR: The drying tumbler may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed.

• LAYOUT: Whenever possible, the tumbler should be installed along an outside wall where duct length can be kept to a minimum, and make-up air can be easily accessed. Construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler, as this would prevent an adequate air supply.

• VENTING: For maximum efficiency and minimum lint accumulation, tumbler air must be exhausted to the outdoors by the shortest possible route.

• MAKE-UP AIR: The tumbler requires provisions for make-up air to replace the air it exhausts.

Venting Requirements:

Properly sized exhaust ducts are essential for proper operation. Exhaust ducts must be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, equivalent in strength and corrosion resistance to galvanized sheet steel not less than 0.0195 inches (0.495 mm) thick.

• Individual Venting: It is preferred to exhaust each tumbler individually to the outdoors. At no point may the cross area of installed venting be less than the cross area of the tumbler’s exhaust thimble.

• Duct Sizing: The maximum allowable length of venting is 14 feet (4.3 m) and two 90° elbows or equivalent. If the duct length exceeds this, the diameter must be increased. Airflow at any point in the duct must be at least 1200 feet (366 m) per minute to ensure lint remains airborne.

• Collector Venting: If a main collector duct is used, it must be sized properly, tapered, and individual ducts must enter at a 45° angle in the direction of airflow. Never connect two tumbler exhausts directly across from each other.

• Clearances: Where an exhaust duct pierces a combustible wall or ceiling, an opening 4 inches (10.2 cm) larger than the duct diameter must be provided, with the duct centered. The space around the duct must be sealed with non-combustible material.

Make-Up Air Requirements:

A tumbler is a forced-air exhaust appliance and requires make-up air to replace the exhausted air.

• Opening Size: The recommended make-up air opening for a 50-pound tumbler like the SPEED QUEEN SCB50CE is 144 square inches (928 sq. cm).

• Combustion Air: At a minimum, tumblers must have at least 1 sq. inch (2.54 cm²) of opening for every 1000 BTU/hr of input rating. For an electric model, ensure sufficient airflow for cooling and efficiency.

• Louvers: Protective louvers can reduce air movement by approximately 40%. The opening size must compensate for the area taken up by louvers.

• Important Note: If dry cleaning machines are in the same area, the tumbler make-up air must come from a source free of solvent gases and vapors to prevent the creation of corrosive acids.

Requirements and Connections:

Electric Drying Tumblers Wiring and Breaker Sizes (NOTE: DO NOT use aluminum wire):

Grounding Instructions:

The SPEED QUEEN SCB50CE drying tumbler must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding will reduce the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance for electric current. The tumbler must be connected to a grounded metal, permanent wiring system; or an equipment grounding conductor must be run with the circuit conductors and connected to the PE Busbar. Check with a qualified serviceman for proper grounding procedures. Improper connection of the equipment grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and electric shock, if the electrical supply is coming from a three-phase service, DO NOT connect a “Stinger Leg” to a single-phase machine.

WARNING: All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit being connected to the tumbler before making any electrical connections. Never attempt to connect a live circuit.

Use the following steps to connect electrical service to the tumbler:

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. If more than one tumbler is being installed, a separate circuit breaker should be provided for each tumbler.

2. Perform the following wiring steps:

a. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

b. Turn the disconnect switch on the tumbler to “off” and open the junction box.

c. Insert the conduit-encased leads through one of the knockout holes in the junction box.

d. Connect wire leads to the disconnect switch. For 1 Phase Units, connect one lead to the top left and the other to the top right. For 3 Phase Units, connect one lead to each connection point.

e. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

3. Check the electrical service phase sequence (for three-phase only) as follows:

a. Energize the electrical service and momentarily start the tumbler. Check the direction of the cylinder rotation (viewed from the front). If the cylinder rotates clockwise, the phase sequence is correct. If it rotates counterclockwise, proceed to step ‘b’.

b. Disconnect power and reverse any two leads at the connections.

4. Close the junction box cover and turn the disconnect switch to “on”.

Positioning the Tumbler:

The tumbler may be removed from its shipping skid before moving to the installation location. To do this, unscrew the four shipping capscrews (one at each corner). The lint panel door will have to be removed to access the two front capscrews. NOTE: Do not throw these four capscrews away – they are the leveling legs.

Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible. All four legs must rest firmly on the floor so the weight of the tumbler is evenly distributed and the tumbler does not rock.

Leveling the Tumbler:

The SPEED QUEEN SCB50CE should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear, and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from side to side.

• To check the front-to-rear level, rotate the clothes cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that bottom rib.

• To check the side-to-side level, place a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury, install lockable doors to prevent public access to the rear of tumblers.

IMPORTANT: Do not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler with laundry, etc. Doing so would prevent adequate air supply to the tumbler’s heat chamber. Install tumblers with sufficient clearance for servicing and operating.

A typical tumbler enclosure has the following clearance requirements:

• TOP: A minimum of 12 inches (30.5 cm) clearance from the tumbler cabinet to any combustible construction at the top is required.

• FRONT: 0 inches clearance is permitted for the first 4 inches (10.16 cm) of the enclosure from the front of the machine. The maximum depth of this part of the enclosure is 4 inches (10.16 cm).

• SIDES: 0 inches clearance is permitted.

• REAR: A minimum of 24 inches (61 cm) is required, with 36 inches (91.4 cm) recommended for maintenance purposes. Provisions for make-up air must be included in the rear area.

Be aware that there may be local codes and ordinances which must also be complied with.

To figure time increments, use the formula: Timer Motor Speed (60) divided by the number of pins on the cam = Cycle Length (minutes). Cams are available with 1 to 12 pins. For example, a 5-pin cam provides a 12-minute cycle (60 ÷ 5 = 12).

Removal of Existing Timing Cam:

1. Rotate the cam by hand until the “V” notch lines up beneath one of the ratchet teeth.

2. Insert a narrow screwdriver under the nylon cam, close to the clock shaft. Lift gently off the shaft, ensuring pressure is directed upward and the “V” notch clears the ratchet tooth.

Installation of New Timing Cam:

1. Insert the drive fork into the timing cam with the wide prong in the wide hole of the cam.

2. Position the timing cam and drive fork over the timer shaft, aligning the timer flat with the drive fork and the “V” notch with one of the ratchet teeth.

3. Press the timing cam down firmly to seat it onto the motor shaft.

4. Remove all accumulated time by turning the cam counterclockwise until the switch shuts off. Apply moderate clockwise pressure to the fully seated timing cam and drive against the timing motor shaft. The meter must be advanced electrically for one full cycle before an accurate measure of time can be made.

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension and adjust if necessary (refer to the Adjustment Section).

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. For electric models, this step is not applicable.

5. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If the cylinder does not stop rotating, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

6. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

7. Start the tumbler. For electric models, this step is to confirm operation.

8. Check the air flow switch operation by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 1-1/2″ (3.81 cm). Adjust if necessary.

9. Turn off the tumbler.

10. Check the air flow switch operation by opening the lint panel again. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 6″ (15.24 cm) with a full load.

For a Coin Operated Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2 1/2 minute cool-down cycle will start.

5. When the metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

For an Electronic Control Tumbler:

Your SPEED QUEEN SCB50CE tumbler comes equipped with Electronic Control, which gives the owner a variety of programming options. To learn how to use the Electronic Control, consult the supplemental manual provided with the machine.

The air flow switch is factory-set for proper operation. On electric models like the SPEED QUEEN SCB50CE, if the switch remains open, or pops open and closed during a cycle, the heating system will shut off. The cylinder and fan will continue to operate even if the switch is malfunctioning.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, air flow switch operation may be affected by a clogged lint screen, lack of make-up air, or obstructions in the exhaust ducts. These conditions must be checked and corrected before adjusting the air flow switch. Always adjust the air flow at installation.

NOTICE: The control panel must be in place and the access door closed before attempting to adjust the air flow switch.

IMPORTANT: The air flow switch disc must remain closed during operation. If it opens and closes during the drying cycle, this indicates insufficient air flow through the tumbler.

Adjustment Steps:

1. Load the tumbler.

2. Start the tumbler. Open the lint panel 6 inches (15.24 cm). The airflow disc should move away from the cabinet, opening the switch contacts and shutting off the heat system. This indicates proper adjustment.

3. If the switch does not open as described, it needs to be MORE sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight toward the disc. Retest by opening the lint panel and continue adjusting until it operates correctly.

4. If the switch opens BEFORE the lint panel is opened 6 inches, it needs to be LESS sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight away from the disc. Retest and continue adjusting until it operates as described in step 2.

Loading Door Switch Adjustment:

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler any time the loading door is opened. To adjust it, follow these steps:

1. Start the tumbler following its operating instructions.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3 inches (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4 inch (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the loading door. The switch should close with an audible “click” when the door is closed to 3 inches (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4 inch (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct point:

a. Close the loading door completely.

b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops.

c. Tighten the lower screw on the switch coupler.

d. Return to step 1 to verify the adjustment.

Cylinder Door Strike Adjustment:

The door strike must be adjusted to have sufficient tension to hold the door closed against the force of a tumbling load. Proper adjustment is when 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) of pull is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut on the strike, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Retighten the jamnut when finished.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation. The guard MUST be reinstalled on the rear of the tumbler after the belt adjustment is made.

The upper belt (Poly V-belt) is self-adjusting and requires no adjustment.

For the lower drive V-belt, proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) by applying light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and the motor pulley.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt that holds the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt:

a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen the V-belt:

a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler.

Daily Maintenance:

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint in the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the lint screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the lint screen is torn, replace it immediately. A torn screen allows lint to flow into the ductwork system, restricting air circulation.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps will allow lint to bypass the screen.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the probe will cause overheating of the tumbler.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

Monthly Maintenance:

1. Perform the daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

4. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

6. Remove the screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

7. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension (refer to the Adjustments section).

8. Reinstall the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

9. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

10. This step is for gas models only.

Biannually Maintenance:

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Perform quarterly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

5. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.
