Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate the SPEED QUEEN SCB50CSH according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death, and/or property damage.

It must be understood that common sense, caution, and carefulness are factors which cannot be built into this tumbler. These factors must be supplied by the person(s) installing, maintaining, or operating the tumbler.

To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury, or death, do not operate the tumbler if it does not perform according to these instructions. Immediately disconnect electrical service, shut off the gas supply, and contact an authorized service representative. Service and repairs are to be performed by authorized service representatives only.

To reduce the risk of serious injury, install lockable door(s) to prevent public access to the rear of the tumblers.

To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, serious injury, or death to persons when using the SPEED QUEEN SCB50CSH, follow these basic precautions:

• Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

• DO NOT tamper with controls.

• DO NOT bypass any safety devices.

• Always follow the fabric care instructions supplied by the garment manufacturer.

• Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

• DO NOT reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

1. Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision of children is necessary when the tumbler is used near children. This is a safety rule for all appliances.

2. Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

3. Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

4. Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate this machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death and/or property damage.

5. Run the tumbler with a load before putting it into service.

6. Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing. Disconnect power by shutting off the appropriate circuit breaker or fuse and by turning off the disconnect switch located on the rear of the tumbler.

7. All manually operated models are factory-equipped with an emergency stop button located on the front panel. If the emergency stop function is desired on coin-operated models, an external emergency stop switch may be installed as specified on the machine wiring diagram. Activation of the emergency stop switch stops all machine control circuit functions, but does not remove all electrical power from the machine.

To avoid creating any flammable vapors which may explode, ignite, or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials in the SPEED QUEEN SCB50CSH:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in, or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents, or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals, or thinner.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

• DO NOT put articles soiled with vegetable or cooking oil in the dryer as these oils may not be removed during washing. Due to the remaining oil, the fabric may catch on fire by itself.

• Use for drying water-washed fabrics only.

The following warning labels will be found on the drying tumbler:

• A clothes dryer produces combustible lint. TUMBLER MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

• Do not touch rotating parts.

• Do not touch a surface until it has cooled.

• WARNING!

• Do not operate without guards in place.

• Disconnect electrical power before servicing.

• To reduce the risk of accumulating unsafe concentrations of combustion gases, the tumbler MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

• A general WARNING label indicates:

– DO NOT put articles soiled with flammable liquids or flammable cleaning solvents in the dryer.

– DO NOT store or use flammable liquids near this appliance.

– DO NOT spray or store aerosols in the vicinity of this appliance.

– Various chemicals used in laundries contain chlorine. When decomposed in a flame, these materials may rapidly corrode and destroy this appliance.

– The dryer must be exhausted outdoors, and the area around the dryer must be free of lint because the dryer produces combustible lint.

– DO NOT dry articles containing foam rubber, plastic, or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

– Use for drying water-washed fabrics only.

– DO NOT put articles soiled with vegetable or cooking oil in the dryer as these oils may not be removed during washing. Due to the remaining oil, the fabric may catch on fire by itself.

– DO NOT reach into the dryer until all moving parts have stopped.

– DO NOT let children play in the dryer.

When writing for information on any tumbler, be sure to mention the model and serial numbers. The model and serial numbers for the SPEED QUEEN SCB50CSH will be found on the nameplate located on the rear of the tumbler or underneath the door hinge.

REVERSING MOTOR SIZES

Upon delivery, visually inspect the crate, carton, and parts for any visible shipping damage. If there are signs of damage, have the carrier note the condition on the shipping papers before signing the receipt, or advise the carrier as soon as it is discovered. A written claim should be filed with the carrier immediately if articles are damaged or missing.

Remove the crate and protective cover and check items against the packing list.

IMPORTANT: Remove shipping tape from the two back draft dampers located in the exhaust thimble.

The following materials must be obtained locally:

For All Tumblers (Gas, Electric, or Steam):

• One circuit breaker.

For Steam Drying Tumblers Only (like the SPEED QUEEN SCB50CSH):

• One steam shut-off gate valve for the steam service line to be connected upstream of the solenoid steam valve.

• Two steam shut-off gate valves for each condensate return line.

• Flexible steam hoses with a 125 psig (8.79 kg/sq. cm) working pressure for connecting steam coils.

• Two steam traps for the steam coil outlet to the condensate return line.

• One steam pressure relief valve rated at 125 psig (8.79 kg/cm²).

For Gas Drying Tumblers Only:

• One gas shut-off valve for the gas service line to each tumbler.

FLOOR: The drying tumbler may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed.

LAYOUT: Whenever possible, the tumbler should be installed along an outside wall where duct length can be kept to a minimum, and make-up air can be easily accessed. Construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler, as this would prevent an adequate air supply to the combustion chamber.

VENTING: For maximum efficiency and minimum lint accumulation, tumbler air must be exhausted outdoors by the shortest possible route.

MAKE-UP AIR: The tumbler is a forced-air exhaust unit and requires provisions for make-up air to replace the exhausted air. The recommended make-up air opening is 144 square inches (928 sq. cm) for 30 and 50-pound tumblers. Protective louvers can reduce air movement by approximately 40%, so the opening must compensate for the area taken by louvers.

Properly sized exhaust ducts are essential. All elbows should be sweep-type. Exhaust ducts must be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, with smooth interior surfaces to reduce lint accumulation. Do not use sheet metal screws to join vent sections.

Individual Venting:

• It is preferred to exhaust tumblers individually to the outdoors. The cross-sectional area of the installed venting must not be less than the cross area of the tumbler’s exhaust thimble.

• The maximum allowable length of venting is 14 feet (4.3 m) plus two 90° elbows or equivalent. If the duct length exceeds this, the diameter must be increased.

• The airflow in the duct must be at least 1200 feet (366 m) per minute to keep lint airborne.

EQUIVALENT LENGTH OF STRAIGHT DUCT

Collector Venting:

• A main collector duct can be used if sized correctly. Diameters should be increased if the collector length exceeds 20 feet (6.1 m).

• The collector duct must be tapered. Individual tumbler ducts must enter the collector duct at a 45° angle in the direction of airflow. Never connect a tumbler duct at a 90° angle.

• Never connect two tumbler exhaust ducts directly across from each other at the point of entry to the collector duct.

• The static back pressure must not exceed the maximum allowable pressure specified on the installation sticker on the rear of the tumbler.

All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. De-energize the electrical circuit before making connections.

Requirements for Reversing Steam Models like the SCB50CSH:

High Pressure Steam Drying Tumblers (Reversing):

Connection Steps:

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. Each tumbler should have its own circuit breaker.

2. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

3. Turn “off” the disconnect switch on the tumbler and open the junction box.

4. Insert leads through a knockout hole and connect them to the disconnect switch.

5. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

6. For three-phase units, check the phase sequence. Energize the service and momentarily start the tumbler. If the cylinder rotates clockwise (viewed from the front), the sequence is correct. If it rotates counterclockwise, disconnect power and reverse any two leads at the connections.

7. Close the junction box cover and turn “on” the disconnect switch.

Positioning:

The tumbler can be removed from its shipping skid by unscrewing the four shipping capscrews at each corner. The lint panel door may need to be removed to access the two front capscrews. These four capscrews are also the leveling legs.

Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible, ensuring all four legs rest firmly on the floor so the weight is evenly distributed and the tumbler does not rock.

Leveling:

The tumbler should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear, and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from side to side. To check the front-to-rear level, rotate the cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that bottom rib. The side-to-side level should be checked by placing a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

The SPEED QUEEN SCB50CSH is a high-pressure machine and requires a constant 80 to 100 psig (5.62 to 7.03 kg/sq. cm) steam service for optimum operation.

Installing Steam Solenoid Valve and Inlet Connections:

1. Install a manual shut-off gate valve in the condensate return line after the steam trap for each coil.

2. Connect the steam solenoid valve to the related steam coil inlet connection using nipples, flex hoses, unions, a tee, and a pressure relief valve.

3. Install a gate shut-off valve in the steam supply line. Connect the shut-off gate valve outlet to the solenoid steam valve inlet connection.

WARNING: The flexible steam hoses connecting the solenoid valve to the coil inlets must have a 125 psig working pressure. The steam solenoid valve must be supported to minimize the load on the steam coil inlet connections.

Installing Steam Trap and Condensate Return Connections:

1. Connect a flexible hose to each steam coil outlet.

2. Install a strainer to the ends of each flexible hose.

3. Install a steam trap to each strainer. The steam trap must be installed a minimum of 10 inches (25.4 cm) below the steam coil outlet connections.

4. Install a gate shut-off valve to each steam trap.

5. Connect to the condensate return lines.

WARNING: The flexible steam hoses for the outlet connections must also have a 125 psig working pressure. Each steam trap must be supported to minimize load on the coil outlet connection.

Steam Connection Sizing for High Pressure (80-100 PSI) models:

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension and adjust if necessary (refer to the Adjustment Section).

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. For gas models, turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be parallel with the gas line when in the “ON” position.

5. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If it doesn’t stop, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

6. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

7. For gas models, start the tumbler and check the burner flame, adjusting the gas inlet shutter if necessary.

8. Check the air flow switch operation by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 1-1/2″ (3.81 cm). Adjust if necessary.

9. Turn off the tumbler.

10. Check the air flow switch operation again by opening the lint panel with a full load. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 6″ (15.24 cm).

The operating check procedure varies depending on the control type:

Manual Dual Timer Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH and set the drying and cool-down selectors to their maximum settings.

2. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start, the heat system will turn on, the drying indicator will light, and the drying selector will rotate counterclockwise.

3. When the drying selector reaches zero (0), the heat system will shut off, the drying indicator will turn off, the cooling indicator will light, and the cooling selector will rotate counterclockwise.

4. When the cooling selector reaches zero (0), the motor will stop, and the cooling indicator will turn off, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

Coin Operated Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start, and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2 1/2 minute cool-down cycle will start.

5. When the metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

Electronic Control Tumbler:

This tumbler comes equipped with Electronic Control, which offers a variety of programming options. To learn how to use the Electronic Control, consult the supplemental manual.

The air flow switch is factory-set but may require adjustment. Note that steam models do not have an air flow switch. Before adjusting, ensure the lint screen is clean and there are no obstructions in the ductwork.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, air flow switch operation may be affected by a clogged lint screen, lack of make-up air, or obstructions in the ducts. These conditions must be checked and corrected before adjusting the switch. Always adjust air flow at installation.

The counterweight should be adjusted so that airflow forces the disc away from the cabinet when the lint panel is opened 6 inches (15.24 cm) with a full load. To adjust:

1. Load the tumbler.

2. Start the tumbler. Open the lint panel 6 inches (15.24 cm). The airflow disc should move away from the cabinet, opening the switch contacts and shutting off the heat system. This indicates proper adjustment.

3. If the switch does not open as described, it needs to be MORE sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight toward the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight toward the disc until it operates correctly.

4. If the switch opens BEFORE the lint panel is opened 6 inches, it needs to be LESS sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight away from the disc. Retest and continue moving it away from the disc until it operates correctly.

Loading Door Switch Adjustment:

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler when the door is opened. To adjust:

1. Start the tumbler.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the door. The switch should “click” when the door is closed 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct point:

a. Close the door completely.

b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops.

c. Tighten the lower screw.

d. Return to step 1 to verify the operation.

Cylinder Door Strike Adjustment:

The door strike must have enough tension to hold the door closed against the force of the tumbling load. Proper adjustment is when a pull of 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut on the door strike, and turn the door strike screw in or out as needed. Retighten the jamnut when finished.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation. The guard MUST be reinstalled after adjustment is made.

Proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) with light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and motor pulley. The upper Poly V-belt is self-adjusting and requires no adjustment.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt that holds the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt:

a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen the V-belt:

a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint in the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the lint screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the lint screen is torn, replace it immediately. A torn screen allows lint to flow into the ductwork, restricting air circulation.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps will allow lint to flow into the ductwork.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the probe will cause overheating of the tumbler.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

1. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

3. (This step appears to be missing in the PDF, but likely relates to removing lint from a component.)

4. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

5. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

6. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

7. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

8. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

9. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Clean accumulated lint and other debris from the front and back motor air vents.

5. For gas models, shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

6. Remove the screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

7. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension (refer to the Adjustments section).

8. Reinstall the rear drive guard.

9. Energize the electrical circuit by turning on the disconnect switch.

10. For gas models, turn on the gas supply. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Perform quarterly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

5. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

6. For gas models, shut off the gas supply. The handle should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line in the “OFF” position.

7. For gas models, unlock and open the service panel to inspect gas connections for evidence of leakage or loose connections. Spraying a mild solution of soap and water on joints will cause bubbles to appear on any leaking connections.

8. Close and securely lock the service panel.

9. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose connections.

10. Close the electrical junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit.

11. For gas models, turn on the gas supply. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line in the “ON” position.

QUARTERLY MAINTENANCE

BIANNUAL MAINTENANCE

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the gas supply external to the machine (if applicable).

4. Turn off the manual gas shut-off valve on the machine (if applicable).

5. Turn off the steam supply external to the machine.

6. Remove all electric, gas, and steam connections.
