Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate the SPEED QUEEN JCB75CE according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death, and/or property damage. It is important to understand that common sense, caution, and carefulness are factors that must be supplied by the person(s) installing, maintaining, or operating the tumbler.

To reduce the risk of serious injury, install lockable door(s) to prevent public access to the rear of the tumblers.

To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury, or death, do not operate the tumbler if it does not perform according to these instructions. Immediately disconnect electrical service, shut off the gas supply, and contact an authorized service representative. Service and repairs are to be performed by authorized service representatives only.

To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury, or death to persons when using the SPEED QUEEN JCB75CE, follow these basic precautions:

• Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

• DO NOT tamper with controls.

• DO NOT bypass any safety devices.

• Always follow the fabric care instructions supplied by the garment manufacturer.

• Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

• DO NOT reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

• Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision of children is necessary when the tumbler is used near children.

• Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

• Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

• Run the tumbler with a load before putting it into service.

• Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing. Disconnect power by shutting off the appropriate circuit breaker or fuse and by turning off the disconnect switch located on the rear of the tumbler.

• All manually operated models are factory-equipped with an emergency stop button on the front panel. Activating the emergency stop switch stops all machine control circuit functions but does not remove all electrical power from the machine.

To avoid creating any flammable vapors which may explode, ignite, or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials in your SPEED QUEEN JCB75CE:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in, or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents, or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals, or thinner.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

• DO NOT put articles soiled with vegetable or cooking oil in the dryer as these oils may not be removed during washing. Due to the remaining oil, the fabric may catch on fire by itself.

The warning labels found on the SPEED QUEEN JCB75CE indicate the following precautions:

• **Combustible Lint:** A clothes dryer produces combustible lint. The tumbler MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

• **Rotating Parts:** Do not touch rotating parts.

• **Hot Surface:** Do not touch the surface until it has cooled.

The model and serial numbers for your SPEED QUEEN JCB75CE will be found on the nameplate. The nameplate is located on the rear of the tumbler or underneath the door hinge.

Upon delivery, visually inspect the crate, carton, and parts for any visible shipping damage. If there are signs of possible damage, have the carrier note the condition on the shipping papers before signing the receipt, or advise the carrier as soon as it is discovered. A written claim should be filed with the carrier immediately if articles are damaged or missing.

Remove the crate and protective cover as soon as possible and check the items listed on the packing list.

IMPORTANT: Remove the shipping tape from the two back draft dampers located in the exhaust thimble.

Floor: The drying tumbler may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed.

Layout: Whenever possible, the tumbler should be installed along an outside wall where duct length can be kept to a minimum, and make-up air can be easily accessed. Construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler, as doing so would prevent an adequate air supply to the tumbler’s combustion chamber.

Venting: For maximum efficiency and minimum lint accumulation, tumbler air must be exhausted to the outdoors by the shortest possible route.

Properly sized exhaust ducts are essential for proper operation. Exhaust ducts shall be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, equivalent in strength and corrosion resistance to galvanized sheet steel not less than 0.0195 inches (0.495 mm) thick.

Individual Venting:

It is preferred to exhaust tumblers individually to the outdoors. At no point may the cross area of installed venting be less than the cross area of the tumbler’s exhaust thimble. The maximum allowable length of venting is 14 feet (4.3 m) with two 90° elbows or equivalent. If the duct length exceeds this, the diameter must be increased.

Collector Venting:

A main collector duct may be used if sized correctly. The collector duct may be rectangular as long as the area is not reduced. It must be tapered. Individual tumbler ducts must enter the collector duct at a 45° angle in the direction of airflow. Never connect a tumbler duct at a 90° angle to the collector duct. Never connect two tumbler exhaust ducts directly across from each other at the point of entry.

With the tumbler in operation, airflow at any point in the duct must be at least 1200 feet (366 m) per minute to ensure that lint remains airborne.

The SPEED QUEEN JCB75CE is a forced air exhaust unit and requires provisions for make-up air to replace the air it exhausts. The manufacturer’s recommended make-up air opening for a 75-pound tumbler is 195 square inches (1258 sq. cm). At a minimum, tumblers must have at least 1 sq. inch (2.54 sq. cm) of opening for every 1000 BTU/hr of input rating for proper combustion.

Protective louvers in the opening can reduce air movement, so the opening must compensate for the area taken up by louvers. Make-up air openings must be increased sufficiently to prevent downdrafts in any vents when all tumblers and other gas-fired appliances in the room are in operation.

Yes. Solvent gases and vapors from dry cleaning machines create acids when drawn through the heater of a drying tumbler. These acids are corrosive to the tumbler and the laundry load. Be sure the make-up air is free of solvent gases and vapors. If dry cleaning machines are in the same area, the tumbler make-up air must come from a source free of these contaminants.

To reduce the risk of fire and accumulation of combustible gases, DO NOT exhaust tumbler air into a window well, gas vent, chimney, or enclosed, unventilated area such as an attic, wall, ceiling, crawl space under a building, or concealed space of a building.

The SPEED QUEEN JCB75CE must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding will reduce the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance for electric current. The tumbler must be connected to a grounded metal, permanent wiring system, or an equipment grounding conductor must be run with the circuit conductors and connected to the PE Busbar.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and electric shock, check with a qualified serviceman for proper grounding procedures. Improper connection of the equipment grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and electric shock, if the electrical supply is coming from a three-phase service, DO NOT connect a “Stinger Leg” to a single-phase machine.

WARNING: All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit being connected to the tumbler before making any electrical connections. Never attempt to connect a live circuit.

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. A separate circuit breaker should be provided for each tumbler.

2. Follow these steps to connect the leads:

a. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

b. Turn “off” the disconnect switch on the tumbler and open the junction box.

c. Insert conduit-encased leads through one of the knockout holes in the junction box.

d. Connect wire leads to the disconnect switch (1-phase units: one lead to top left, one lead to top right; 3-phase units: one lead to each connection point).

e. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

3. For three-phase units only, check the electrical service phase sequence:

a. Energize electrical service and momentarily start the tumbler. Check the direction of the cylinder rotation. If the cylinder rotates clockwise (viewed from the front), the phase sequence is correct. If it rotates counterclockwise, proceed to step ‘b’.

b. Disconnect and reverse any two leads at the connections.

4. Close the junction box cover and turn “on” the disconnect switch.

The tumbler may be removed from its shipping skid before moving to the installation location. To do so, unscrew the four shipping capscrews (one at each corner). The lint panel door will have to be removed to access two front capscrews. NOTE: Do not throw these four capscrews away; they are the leveling legs.

Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible. All four legs must rest firmly on the floor so the weight is evenly distributed and the tumbler does not rock.

To level the tumbler, it should be level within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear and side to side. Check the front-to-rear level by rotating the cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then placing a level on that bottom rib. The side-to-side level should be checked by placing a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

Before connecting, make certain the gas service is the same as that specified on the tumbler’s nameplate.

• NATURAL GAS service must be supplied at 6.5 ± 1.5 inch water column pressure (1.62 ± .37 kPa).

• L.P. GAS service must be supplied at 11 ± .3 inch water column pressure (2.74 ± .07 kPa).

Purge air and sediment from the gas service line before connecting it loosely to the tumbler. Purge the remaining air until the odor of gas is detected, then tighten the connection. Use pipe compound resistant to the actions of L.P. gas on all pipe threads.

WARNING: Check all pipe connections, internal and external, for gas leaks using a soapy solution. To reduce the risk of explosion or fire, DO NOT USE AN OPEN FLAME TO CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS! Gas connections should be checked annually for leakage.

The tumbler and its individual shut-off valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing of that system at test pressures in excess of 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa).

Installing Steam Solenoid Valve and Making Inlet Connections:

1. Install a manual shut-off gate valve in the condensate return line after the steam trap for each coil.

2. Connect the steam solenoid valve to the related steam coil inlet connection with nipples, flex hoses, unions, tee, and pressure relief valve.

3. Install a gate shut-off valve in the steam supply line. Connect the shut-off gate valve outlet to the solenoid steam valve inlet connection.

Installing Steam Trap and Making Condensate Return Connections:

1. Connect a flexible hose to each steam coil outlet.

2. Install a strainer to the ends of each flexible hose.

3. Install a steam trap to each strainer. IMPORTANT: The steam trap must be installed a minimum of 10 inches (25.4 cm) below the steam coil outlet connections.

4. Install a gate shut-off valve to each steam trap.

5. Connect to condensate return lines.

1. Turn the machine disconnect switch, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position.

2. Turn the gas shut-off valve, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position (gas valve handle should be parallel with the gas line).

3. Start the tumbler, following the operating instructions.

NOTE: The ignition control circuitry will verify the airflow switch is open before starting the cylinder motor. Once the motor is started, air flowing through the tumbler will close the airflow switch. The tumbler will purge air for 18 seconds. Ignition will start by a three-second release of gas from the gas valve and sparking of the ignitor. If ignition does not occur during the first three seconds, the ignition control will “lockout,” causing the gas valve to close and a red button on the ignition control to illuminate.

To reset the ignition system, open the access door and press the red button on the ignition control. Close and lock the access door, verify the gas shut-off valve is in the “on” position, and return to step three.

4. If the tumbler will not start, remove it from service by turning the machine disconnect switch to the “off” position and turning the gas shut-off valve to the “off” position (gas valve handle should be at a right angle to the gas line).

The cycle length is determined by the number of pins on the cam. To figure time increments, use the formula: Timer Motor Speed (60) divided by the number of pins on the cam = Cycle Length (minutes).

Removal of Existing Timing Cam:

1. Rotate the cam by hand until the “V” notch lines up beneath the ratchet tooth.

2. Insert a narrow screwdriver under the nylon cam, close to the clock shaft. Lift gently off the shaft, ensuring the “V” notch clears the ratchet tooth.

Installation of New Timing Cam:

1. Insert the drive into the timing cam with the wide prong in the wide hole of the cam.

2. Position the timing cam and drive fork over the timer shaft, aligning the timer flat with the drive fork and the “V” notch with one of the ratchet teeth.

3. Press the timing cam down firmly to seat it onto the motor shaft.

4. Remove all accumulated time by turning the cam counterclockwise until the switch shuts off. Apply moderate clockwise pressure to the fully seated timing cam and drive against the timing motor shaft. The meter must be advanced electrically for one cycle before an accurate measure of time can be made.

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension and adjust if necessary.

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line (gas models only). The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

5. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If it doesn’t stop, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

6. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

7. Start the tumbler and check the burner flame, adjusting the gas inlet shutter if necessary.

8. Check the airflow switch operation by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 1-1/2″ (3.81 cm). Adjust if necessary.

9. Turn off the tumbler.

10. Check the airflow switch operation again by opening the lint panel with a full load. Heating systems should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 6″ (15.24 cm).

Manual Dual Timer Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH and set the drying and cool down selectors to their maximum settings.

2. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start, the heat system will turn on, the drying indicator will light, and the drying selector will rotate counterclockwise.

3. When the drying selector reaches zero (0), the heat system will shut off, the drying indicator will turn off, the cooling indicator will light, and the cooling selector will rotate counterclockwise.

4. When the cooling selector reaches zero (0), the motor will stop and the cooling indicator will turn off, indicating the cycle is finished.

Coin Operated Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2 1/2 minute cool-down cycle will start.

5. When metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

Electronic Control Tumbler:

This tumbler comes equipped with Electronic Control, which gives the owner a variety of programming options. To learn how to use the Electronic Control, consult the supplemental manual.

NOTICE: Both air inlet shutters on the burner must be adjusted for proper combustion and maximum efficiency. Before adjusting, ensure all lint is removed from the lint compartment and screen.

1. Unlock and open the access door.

2. Start the tumbler and check the flame pattern. A correct mixture is indicated if the flame is primarily blue, with small yellow tips, and bends to the right of the heater section. Too little air is indicated if the flame is yellow, lazy, and smoky.

3. To adjust, loosen the air inlet shutter adjusting screw.

4. Open or close the air shutter as necessary to obtain the proper flame intensity.

5. After adjustment, tighten the air shutter adjusting screw securely.

6. If the shutter is correctly adjusted but the flame pattern is straight up, it indicates insufficient primary air. A flame pattern that flares to the right and left indicates no air is flowing through the tumbler.

NOTICE: The control panel must be in place and the access door closed before attempting to adjust the air flow switch. The air flow switch disc must remain closed during operation.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, airflow switch operation may be affected by a clogged lint screen, lack of make-up air, or obstructions in ducts. These conditions must be checked and corrected before adjusting the switch.

Adjust the counterweight so that airflow will force the disc away from the cabinet when the lint panel is opened 6 inches (15.24 cm) with a full load.

1. Load the tumbler.

2. Start the tumbler. Open the lint panel 6 inches. The airflow disc should move away from the cabinet, opening the switch contacts and shutting off the heat system. This indicates proper operation.

3. If the switch does not open as described, it needs to be MORE sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight toward the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight toward the disc until it operates correctly.

4. If the switch opens BEFORE the lint panel is opened the proper distance, it needs to be LESS sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight away from the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight away from the disc until it operates correctly.

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler anytime the loading door is opened. To adjust it:

1. Start the tumbler following operating instructions.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the loading door. The switch should close with an audible “click” when the door is closed 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct point:

a. Close the loading door completely.

b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops.

c. Tighten the lower screw on the switch coupler.

d. Return to step 1 to verify the new adjustment.

The door strike must be adjusted to have sufficient tension to hold the loading door closed against the force of a tumbling load. Proper adjustment is when 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) of pull is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut on the door strike, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Retighten the jamnut when finished.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation. The guard MUST be reinstalled on the rear of the tumbler after adjustment is made.

Proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) with light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and motor pulley. The upper poly V-belt is self-adjusting and requires no adjustment.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt holding the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt:

a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen the V-belt:

a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint in the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the lint screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the lint screen is torn, replace it immediately.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps allow lint to flow into the ductwork.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the probe will cause overheating.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

1. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

4. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

5. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

6. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

7. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

8. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

9. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Clean accumulated lint and other debris from the front and back motor air vents.

5. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line (gas models only). The handle should be at a 90° angle to the supply line when in the “OFF” position.

6. Remove the screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

7. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension.

8. Reinstall the rear drive guard.

9. Energize the electrical circuit by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

10. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve (gas models only). The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Perform quarterly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

5. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

6. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve (gas models only). The handle should be at a 90° angle to the supply line when in the “OFF” position.

7. Unlock and open the service panel and inspect gas connections for evidence of leakage or loose connections. NOTE: Spraying a mild solution of soap and water on joints will cause bubbles to appear on any leaking connections.

8. Close and securely lock the service panel.

9. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose electrical connections.

10. Close the electrical junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

11. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve (gas models only). The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

Biannual Maintenance

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the gas supply external to the machine.

4. Turn off the manual gas shut-off valve on the machine.

5. Turn off the steam supply external to the machine.

6. Remove all electric, gas, and steam connections.
