Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate your SPEED QUEEN SCB30CSL according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death, and/or property damage. It is important to understand that common sense, caution, and carefulness are factors that cannot be built into the tumbler and must be supplied by the person(s) installing, maintaining, or operating it.

General Precautions:

• To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury, or death, do not operate the tumbler if it does not perform according to instructions. Immediately disconnect electrical service and contact an authorized service representative.

• Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

• DO NOT tamper with controls or bypass any safety devices.

• Always follow the fabric care instructions supplied by the garment manufacturer.

• Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

• DO NOT reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

• Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision is necessary when the tumbler is used near children.

• Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

• Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

• Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing.

Flammable Materials Warning:

To avoid creating flammable vapors which may explode, ignite, or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials in your SPEED QUEEN SCB30CSL:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in, or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents, or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals, or thinner.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

• DO NOT put articles soiled with vegetable or cooking oil in the dryer as these oils may not be removed during washing. Due to the remaining oil, the fabric may catch on fire by itself.

To reduce the risk of serious injury, it is recommended to install lockable doors to prevent public access to the rear of the tumblers.

The following warning labels can be found on your SPEED QUEEN SCB30CSL tumbler:

• Fire Symbol: A clothes dryer produces combustible lint. TUMBLER MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

• Rotating Fan Symbol: Do not touch rotating parts.

• Hot Surface Symbol: Do not touch surface until it has cooled.

• Exclamation Point Symbol: WARNING!

• Guarded Fan Symbol: Do not operate without guards in place.

• Lightning Bolt Symbol: Disconnect electrical power before servicing.

• Exhaust Gas Symbol: To reduce risk of accumulating unsafe concentrations of combustion gases, tumbler MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

The model and serial numbers for your SPEED QUEEN SCB30CSL will be found on the nameplate. The nameplate is located either on the rear of the tumbler or underneath the door hinge.

The minimum clearances to the nearest combustible material are as follows:

• Top: 12 inches (30.5 cm) Minimum. A 0-inch clearance is permitted for the first 4 inches (10.2 cm) along the front of the machine.

• Back: 0 inches. A minimum of 24 inches (61 cm) is recommended for service access.

• Sides: 0 inches Permitted.

Upon delivery, visually inspect the crate, carton, and parts for any visible shipping damage. If there are signs of possible damage, have the carrier note the condition on the shipping papers before signing the receipt, or advise the carrier as soon as the damage is discovered. A written claim should be filed with the carrier immediately if articles are damaged or missing.

Remove the crate and protective cover and check items against the packing list.

IMPORTANT: Remove shipping tape from the two back draft dampers located in the exhaust thimble.

You will need to obtain the following materials locally:

• One circuit breaker.

• One steam shut-off gate valve for the steam service line to be connected upstream of the solenoid steam valve.

• Two steam shut-off gate valves for each condensate return line.

• Flexible steam hoses with a 125 psig (8.79 kg/sq. cm) working pressure for connecting steam coils.

• Two steam traps for the steam coil outlet to the condensate return line.

• One steam pressure relief valve rated at 125 psig (8.79 kg/cm²).

Floor: The tumbler may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed.

Layout: Whenever possible, the tumbler should be installed along an outside wall where duct length can be kept to a minimum, and make-up air can be easily accessed. Construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler, as this would prevent an adequate air supply.

Venting: For maximum efficiency and minimum lint accumulation, tumbler air must be exhausted to the outdoors by the shortest possible route. Proper sized exhaust ducts are essential. All elbows should be sweep type. Exhaust ducts must be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, and assembled so interior surfaces are smooth to reduce lint accumulation. Do not use sheet metal screws to join vent sections.

Make-Up Air: A tumbler is a forced-air exhausted appliance and requires provisions for make-up air to replace the air it exhausts. The recommended make-up air opening is 144 square inches (928 sq. cm). Protective louvers can reduce air movement by approximately 40%, so the opening must compensate for the area taken up by louvers.

The maximum allowable length of venting is 14 feet (4.3 m) and two 90° elbows or equivalent. Use the table below to determine the equivalent length of straight duct for each 90° elbow.

Example: A 6-inch (15.2 cm) diameter duct’s equivalent length of 14 feet (4.3 m) of duct and two 90° elbows is: 14 feet + 7 feet + 7 feet = 28 feet (8.5 m).

If the required duct length exceeds the maximum allowable, the diameter of a round duct must be increased by 10% for each additional 20 feet (6.1 m).

The electrical requirements are as follows:

Grounding Instructions:

Your SPEED QUEEN SCB30CSL must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding reduces the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance for electric current. The tumbler must be connected to a grounded metal, permanent wiring system; or an equipment grounding conductor must be run with the circuit conductors and connected to the PE Busbar.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and electric shock, check with a qualified serviceman for proper grounding procedures. Improper connection of the equipment grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. If the electrical supply is coming from a three-phase service, DO NOT connect a “Stinger Leg” to a single-phase machine.

WARNING: All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit before making any connections. Never attempt to connect a live circuit.

Follow these steps to connect the electrical service:

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. Each tumbler should have its own circuit breaker for maintenance purposes.

2. Perform the following connections:

a. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

b. Turn “off” the disconnect switch on the tumbler and open the junction box.

c. Insert the conduit-encased leads through one of the knockout holes in the junction box.

d. Connect the wire leads to the disconnect switch. For 1 Phase Units, connect one lead to the top left connection point and the other lead to the top right connection point.

e. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

3. For three-phase units only, check the electrical service phase sequence. Energize the service and momentarily start the tumbler. If the cylinder rotates clockwise (viewed from the front), the sequence is correct. If it rotates counterclockwise, disconnect power and reverse any two leads at the connections.

4. Close the junction box cover and turn “on” the disconnect switch.

Positioning:

The tumbler can be removed from its shipping skid before or after moving to the installation location. To remove it, unscrew the four shipping capscrews (one at each corner). The lint panel door may need to be removed to access the two front capscrews. NOTE: Do not throw these four capscrews away – they are the leveling legs.

Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible, and ensure all four legs rest firmly on the floor so the weight is evenly distributed and the tumbler does not rock.

Leveling:

Your SPEED QUEEN SCB30CSL should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from side to side. Check the front-to-rear level by rotating the cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that bottom rib. The side-to-side level should be checked by placing a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

When constructing an enclosure, follow these guidelines:

• IMPORTANT: DO NOT block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler with laundry, etc. Doing so would prevent adequate air supply to the tumbler’s heat chamber.

• The clearance of the tumbler cabinet from combustible construction must be a MINIMUM of 12 inches (30.5 cm) at the top.

• A 0-inch clearance is permitted for the first 4 inches (10.16 cm) along the front top edge.

• A minimum of 24 inches (61 cm) is required at the rear for maintenance purposes, with 36 inches (91.4 cm) being recommended.

• 0-inch clearance is permitted at the sides.

• WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury, install lockable doors to prevent public access to the rear of tumblers.

Always be aware of local codes and ordinances which must also be complied with.

Low pressure machines like the SCB30CSL require a constant 10 to 15 psig (.70 to 1.05 kg/sq. cm) steam service for optimum operation.

Installing Steam Inlet Connections:

1. Install a manual shut-off gate valve in the condensate return line after the steam trap for each coil.

2. Connect the steam solenoid valve to the related steam coil inlet connection with nipples, flex hoses, unions, a tee, and a pressure relief valve.

3. Install a gate shut-off valve in the steam supply line. Connect this valve’s outlet to the solenoid steam valve’s inlet connection.

WARNING: Flexible steam hoses must have a 125 psig working pressure. The shut-off gate valve must be installed upstream from the solenoid valve. The steam solenoid valve must be supported so minimum load is exerted on the steam coil inlet connections.

Installing Steam Trap and Condensate Return Connections:

1. Connect a flexible hose to each steam coil outlet.

2. Install a strainer to the ends of each flexible hose.

3. Install a steam trap to each strainer. IMPORTANT: The steam trap must be installed a minimum of 10 inches (25.4 cm) below the steam coil outlet connections.

4. Install a gate shut-off valve to each steam trap.

5. Connect to condensate return lines.

WARNING: Flexible hoses for the outlet connections must have a minimum 125 psig working pressure. A shutoff gate valve must be installed downstream from each steam trap. Each steam trap must be supported so minimum load is exerted on the coil outlet connection.

The following table outlines the requirements. The SPEED QUEEN SCB30CSL is a low-pressure steam model.

The cycle length is determined by the number of pins on the cam. To calculate, use the formula: Timer Motor Speed (60) divided by number of pins on cam = Cycle Length (minutes).

Removal of Existing Cam:

1. Rotate the cam by hand until the “V” notch lines up beneath a ratchet tooth.

2. Insert a narrow screwdriver under the nylon cam, close to the clock shaft. Lift gently off the shaft, ensuring pressure is directed upward and the “V” notch clears the ratchet tooth.

Installation of New Cam:

1. Insert the drive into the timing cam with the wide prong in the wide hole of the cam.

2. Position the timing cam and drive fork over the timer shaft, aligning the timer flat with the drive fork and the “V” notch with one of the ratchet teeth.

3. Press the timing cam down firmly to seat it onto the motor shaft.

4. Remove all accumulated time by turning the cam counterclockwise until the switch shuts off. Apply moderate clockwise pressure to the fully seated cam and drive against the timing motor shaft. The meter must be advanced electrically for one cycle before an accurate measure of time can be made.

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension and adjust if necessary (refer to the Adjustment Section).

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If it doesn’t stop, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

5. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

6. Start the tumbler. (Steam models like the SCB30CSL do not have a burner flame to check).

7. Turn off the tumbler.

For a Manual Dual Timer Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH and set the drying and cool down selectors to their maximum settings.

2. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start, the heat system will turn on, the drying indicator will light, and the drying selector will rotate counterclockwise.

3. When the drying selector reaches zero (0), the heat system will shut off, the drying indicator will turn off, the cooling indicator will light, and the cooling selector will rotate counterclockwise.

4. When the cooling selector reaches zero (0), the motor will stop and the cooling indicator will turn off, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

For a Coin Operated Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2 1/2 minute cool down cycle will start.

5. When metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

For an Electronic Control Tumbler:

The tumbler comes equipped with Electronic Control, which gives the owner a variety of programming options. To learn how to use the Electronic Control, consult the supplemental manual.

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler anytime the loading door is opened. To adjust it, follow these steps:

1. Start the tumbler following its operating instructions.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the loading door. The switch should close with an audible “click” when the loading door is closed 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct distance:

a. Close the loading door completely.

b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the switch coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops.

c. Tighten the lower screw on the switch coupler.

d. Return to step 1 to verify the new adjustment.

The door strike must be adjusted to have sufficient tension to hold the loading door closed against the force of a tumbling load. Proper adjustment is achieved when 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) of pull is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut on the door strike, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Once the desired tension is achieved, retighten the jamnut.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation. The guard MUST be reinstalled on the rear of the tumbler after the adjustment is made.

Proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) with light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and motor pulley. The upper Poly V-belt is self-adjusting and requires no adjustment.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust the belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt holding the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt:

a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen the V-belt:

a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint in the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the lint screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the lint screen is torn, replace it immediately. A torn lint screen allows lint to flow into the ductwork system, restricting air circulation.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps will allow lint to flow into the ductwork.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the sensing probe will cause overheating of the tumbler.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

1. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

3. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

4. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

5. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

6. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

7. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

8. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

Quarterly Maintenance:

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Clean accumulated lint and other debris from the front and back motor air vents.

5. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension (refer to the Adjustments section).

6. Remove screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

7. Reinstall the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

8. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

Biannual Maintenance:

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily, monthly, and quarterly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

4. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose electrical connections.

5. Close the electrical junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

Use this chart to track maintenance. Write the date in the corresponding (DATES) column when a task is completed.

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the steam supply external to the machine.

4. Remove all electric and steam connections.
