Please be aware of the following critical warnings when using your SPEED QUEEN SCB50CG tumbler:

FAILURE TO INSTALL, MAINTAIN, AND/OR OPERATE THIS MACHINE ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURER’S INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN CONDITIONS WHICH CAN PRODUCE SERIOUS INJURY, DEATH AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury or death to persons:

• Do not operate the tumbler if it does not perform according to these instructions. Immediately disconnect electrical service, shut off gas supply and contact an authorized service representative. Service and repairs are to be performed by authorized service representatives only.

• Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

• DO NOT tamper with controls.

• DO NOT bypass any safety devices.

• Always follow the fabric care instructions supplied by the garment manufacturer.

• Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

• DO NOT reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

To reduce the risk of serious injury:

• Install lockable door(s) to prevent public access to the rear of tumblers.

To avoid creating any flammable vapors which may explode, ignite or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials in your SPEED QUEEN SCB50CG:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals or thinner.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

• DO NOT put articles soiled with vegetable or cooking oil in the dryer as these oils may not be removed during washing. Due to the remaining oil, the fabric may catch on fire by itself.

To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, serious injury or death to persons when using your SPEED QUEEN SCB50CG dryer, follow these basic precautions:

1. Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision of children is necessary when the tumbler is used near children. This is a safety rule for all appliances.

2. Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

3. Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

4. Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate this machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death and/or property damage.

5. Run the tumbler with a load before putting the tumbler into service.

6. Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing. Disconnect power by shutting off the appropriate circuit breaker or fuse and by turning off the disconnect switch located on the rear of the tumbler.

7. If an emergency stop function is desired on coin-operated models, an external emergency stop switch may be installed as specified on the machine wiring diagram. Activation of the emergency stop switch stops all machine control circuit functions, but does not remove all electrical power from the machine.

The following warning labels will be found on the SPEED QUEEN SCB50CG drying tumbler:

• A clothes dryer produces combustible lint. TUMBLER MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

• Do not touch rotating parts.

• Do not touch surface until it has cooled.

• WARNING!

• Do not operate without guards in place.

• Disconnect electrical power before servicing.

• To reduce risk of accumulating unsafe concentrations of combustion gases, tumbler MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

The model and serial numbers for your SPEED QUEEN SCB50CG will be found on the nameplate. The nameplate is located on the rear of the tumbler or underneath the door hinge.

REVERSING MOTOR SIZES – 50 LB.

Upon delivery, visually inspect the crate, carton, and parts for any visible shipping damage. If there is damage or signs of possible damage, have the carrier note the condition on the shipping papers before signing the receipt, or advise the carrier as soon as it is discovered. A written claim should be filed with the carrier immediately if articles are damaged or missing.

Remove the crate and protective cover as soon as possible and check the items listed on the packing list.

IMPORTANT: Remove shipping tape from the two back draft dampers located in the exhaust thimble.

Floor: The SPEED QUEEN SCB50CG tumbler may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed.

Layout: Whenever possible, the tumbler should be installed along an outside wall where duct length can be kept to a minimum, and make-up air can be easily accessed. Construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler, as this would prevent an adequate air supply to the tumbler’s combustion chamber.

Venting: For maximum efficiency and minimum lint accumulation, tumbler air must be exhausted to the outdoors by the shortest possible route.

Make-Up Air: A tumbler is a forced-air exhaust appliance and requires provisions for make-up air to replace the air it exhausts.

Properly sized exhaust ducts are essential for the operation of your SPEED QUEEN SCB50CG. Here are the requirements:

• Exhaust ducts must be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, equivalent in strength and corrosion resistance to galvanized sheet steel not less than 0.0195 inches (0.495 mm) thick.

• All elbows should be sweep type. Do not use sheet metal screws to join vent sections, as interior surfaces must be smooth to reduce lint accumulation.

• Where an exhaust duct pierces a combustible wall or ceiling, an opening 4 inches (10.2 cm) larger than the duct diameter must be provided, with the duct centered. The space around the duct must be sealed with non-combustible material.

• Individual Venting: It is preferred to exhaust tumblers individually to the outdoors. The cross-sectional area of the installed venting must never be less than the cross-sectional area of the tumbler’s exhaust thimble. Maximum allowable length is 14 feet (4.3 m) with two 90° elbows. For longer ducts, the diameter must be increased.

• Collector Venting: A main collector duct can be used if sized properly. It must be tapered, and individual ducts must enter at a 45° angle in the direction of airflow. Never connect a duct at a 90° angle. The system must be designed so static back pressure does not exceed the maximum specified on the installation sticker on the rear of the tumbler.

• With the tumbler in operation, airflow at any point in the duct must be at least 1200 feet (366 m) per minute to ensure lint remains airborne.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and accumulation of combustible gases, DO NOT exhaust tumbler air into a window well, gas vent, chimney or enclosed, unventilated area such as an attic, wall, ceiling, crawl space under a building, or concealed space of a building.

Your SPEED QUEEN SCB50CG requires make-up air to replace the air it exhausts. The manufacturer’s recommended opening for each tumbler is 144 square inches (928 sq. cm). At a minimum, there must be at least 1 sq. inch (2.54 cm²) of opening for every 1000 BTU/hr of input rating for proper combustion.

Protective louvers in the opening can reduce air movement by about 40%, so the opening size must compensate for this. Make-up air openings must be increased sufficiently if other gas-fired or gravity-vented appliances are in the same room to prevent downdrafts.

WARNING: Solvent gases and vapors from dry cleaning machines create corrosive acids when drawn through the heater of a drying tumbler. Be sure make-up air is free of solvent gases and vapors. If dry cleaning machines are in the same area, the tumbler make-up air must come from a source free of these contaminants.

Requirements

Gas and High Pressure Steam Drying Tumblers

WARNING: All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit being connected to the tumbler before making any electrical connections. Never attempt to connect a live circuit.

Follow these steps to connect electrical service to the tumbler:

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. A separate circuit breaker should be provided for each tumbler.

2. Perform the wiring:

a. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

b. Turn the disconnect switch on the tumbler to “off” and open the junction box.

c. Insert the conduit-encased leads through one of the knockout holes in the junction box.

d. Connect the wire leads to the disconnect switch.

e. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

3. For three-phase units only, check the electrical service phase sequence:

a. Energize the electrical service and momentarily start the tumbler. Check the direction of cylinder rotation. If the cylinder rotates clockwise (viewed from the front), the phase sequence is correct.

b. If the cylinder rotates counterclockwise, disconnect the power and reverse any two leads at the connections.

4. Close the junction box cover and turn the disconnect switch to “on”.

Positioning:

The tumbler can be removed from its shipping skid before or after moving to its installation location. To remove it, unscrew the four shipping capscrews (one at each corner). The lint panel door will need to be removed to access the two front capscrews. NOTE: Do not throw these four capscrews away – they are the leveling legs.

Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible. All four legs must rest firmly on the floor so the weight is evenly distributed and the tumbler does not rock.

Leveling:

The SPEED QUEEN SCB50CG should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear, and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from side to side. To check the front-to-rear level, rotate the cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that bottom rib. To check the side-to-side level, place a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

Gas Requirements:

Before connecting, ensure the gas service is the same as specified on the nameplate. If not, DO NOT CONNECT the gas line; the burner orifice and gas valve must be converted first by authorized personnel.

• Natural Gas: Must be supplied at 6-1/2 ± 1-1/2 inch water column pressure (1.62 ± .37 kPa).

• L.P. Gas: Must be supplied at 11 ± .3 inch water column pressure (2.74 ± .07 kPa). A vent to the outdoors must be provided in the room where the tumbler is installed.

It is important that equal gas pressure is maintained at all tumbler gas connections, often achieved by installing a one-inch pipe gas loop.

Gas Connection Procedure:

1. Purge air and sediment from the gas service line before connecting it loosely to the tumbler.

2. Purge the remaining air until the odor of gas is detected, then tighten the connection.

3. Use a pipe compound resistant to the actions of L.P. gas on all pipe threads.

WARNINGS:

• Check all pipe connections, internal and external, for gas leaks using a soapy solution. To reduce the risk of explosion or fire, DO NOT USE AN OPEN FLAME TO CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS! Gas connections should be checked annually for leakage.

• The tumbler and its individual shut-off valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing of that system at test pressures in excess of 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa).

• The tumbler must be isolated from the gas supply piping system by closing its individual manual shut-off valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping system at a test pressure equal to or less than 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa).

Lighting the System:

1. Turn the machine disconnect switch, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position.

2. Turn the gas shut-off valve, also on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position (the gas valve handle should be parallel with the gas line).

3. Start the tumbler following the operating instructions that accompanied it.

Note: The ignition control circuitry will first verify the airflow switch is open. Once the cylinder motor starts, the airflow switch will close. The tumbler will purge air for 18 seconds. Ignition will then start with a three-second release of gas and sparking of the ignitor. If ignition does not occur, the control will “lockout,” closing the gas valve and illuminating a red button on the ignition control. To reset, open the access door, press the red button on the ignition control, close and lock the door, verify the gas shut-off valve is on, and return to step 3.

Shutting Down the System:

4. If the tumbler will not start, remove it from service by turning the machine disconnect switch to the “off” position and turning the gas shut-off valve to the “off” position (the gas valve handle should be at a right angle to the gas line).

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension and adjust if necessary.

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. For gas models only, turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

5. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If it doesn’t stop, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

6. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

7. Start the tumbler and check the burner flame, adjusting the gas inlet shutter if necessary.

8. Check the airflow switch operation by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 1-1/2″ (3.81 cm). Adjust if necessary.

9. Turn off the tumbler.

10. Check the airflow switch operation again by opening the lint panel with a full load. Heating systems should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 6″ (15.24 cm).

Operation depends on the control type of your SPEED QUEEN SCB50CG.

For Manual Dual Timer Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH and set the drying and cool down selectors to their maximum settings.

2. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start, the heat system will turn on, the drying indicator will light, and the drying selector will rotate counterclockwise.

3. When the drying selector reaches zero (0), the heat system will shut off, the drying indicator will turn off, the cooling indicator will light, and the cooling selector will rotate counterclockwise.

4. When the cooling selector reaches zero (0), the motor will stop and the cooling indicator will turn off, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

For Coin Operated Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2 1/2 minute cool-down cycle will start.

5. When the metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

For Electronic Control Tumbler:

The tumbler comes equipped with an Electronic Control that offers a variety of programming options. To learn how to use the Electronic Control, consult the supplemental manual.

NOTICE: Both air inlet shutters on the burner must be adjusted for proper combustion and maximum efficiency. Before adjusting, ensure all lint is removed from the lint compartment and screen.

1. Unlock and open the access door.

2. Start the tumbler and check the flame pattern. A correct mixture is indicated if the flame is primarily blue with small yellow tips and bends to the right of the heater section (Proper Air Flow). Too little air is indicated if the flame is yellow, lazy, and smokey (Insufficient Air Flow). A flame that flares to the right and left indicates no air is flowing through the tumbler (No Air Flow).

3. To adjust, loosen the air inlet shutter adjusting screw.

4. Open or close the air shutter as necessary to obtain the proper flame intensity.

5. After adjustment, tighten the air shutter adjusting screw securely.

6. If the shutter is correctly adjusted but the flame pattern is straight up, it means insufficient primary air is flowing through the tumbler, and the airflow switch is improperly set.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, airflow switch operation may be affected by a clogged lint screen, lack of make-up air, or obstructions in the ductwork. These conditions must be checked and corrected before adjusting the air flow switch. Always adjust airflow at installation.

The counterweight should be adjusted so airflow will force the disc away from the cabinet when the lint panel is opened 6 inches (15.24 cm) with a full load.

1. Load the tumbler.

2. Start the tumbler. Open the lint panel 6 inches (15.24 cm). The airflow disc should move away from the cabinet, opening the switch contacts and shutting off the heat system. This indicates proper operation.

3. If the switch does not open as described, it needs to be MORE sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight toward the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight toward the disc until it operates correctly.

4. If the switch opens BEFORE the lint panel is opened the proper distance, it needs to be LESS sensitive. Depress the spring clip and move the counterweight away from the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight away from the disc until it operates correctly.

Loading Door Switch Adjustment:

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler when the door is opened. To adjust:

1. Start the tumbler.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the loading door. The switch should close with an audible “click” when the door is closed 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

4. If it does not close correctly: a. Close the door completely. b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops. c. Tighten the screw. d. Return to step 1 to verify operation.

Cylinder Door Strike Adjustment:

The door strike must have sufficient tension to hold the door closed against the force of tumbling laundry. Proper adjustment is when 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) of pull is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut on the door strike, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Retighten the jamnut.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation. The guard MUST be reinstalled on the rear of the tumbler after belt adjustment is made.

Proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) with light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and motor pulley.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt holding the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt:

a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen the V-belt:

a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler.

6. The upper belt (Poly V-belt) requires no adjustment as it is self-adjusting.

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint in the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the lint screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the lint screen is torn, replace it immediately. A torn screen allows lint to flow into the ductwork system, restricting air circulation.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps will allow lint to flow into the ductwork.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the probe will cause overheating.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

1. Perform the daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

4. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

5. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

6. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

7. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

8. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

9. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Clean accumulated lint and other debris from the front and back motor air vents.

5. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line. The handle should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

6. Remove the screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

7. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension.

8. Reinstall the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

9. Energize the electrical circuit by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

10. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Perform quarterly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

5. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

6. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

7. Unlock and open the service panel and inspect gas connections for evidence of leakage or loose connections. NOTE: Spraying a mild solution of soap and water on joints will cause bubbles to appear on any leaking connections.

8. Close and securely lock the service panel.

9. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose electrical connections.

10. Close the electrical junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

11. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

QUARTERLY MAINTENANCE

BIANNUAL MAINTENANCE

To safely decommission your SPEED QUEEN SCB50CG, follow these steps:

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the gas supply external to the machine.

4. Turn off the manual gas shut-off valve on the machine.

5. If applicable, turn off the steam supply external to the machine.

6. Remove all electric, gas, and steam connections.

You should KEEP THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. If the tumbler changes ownership, be sure this manual accompanies the tumbler. A copy of the operating instruction must remain with the tumbler after installation.
