General Operation:

• Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate this machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death, and/or property damage.

• To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury or death, do not operate the tumbler if it does not perform correctly. Immediately disconnect electrical service, shut off the gas supply, and contact an authorized service representative. All service and repairs must be performed by authorized service representatives only.

• Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

• DO NOT tamper with controls or bypass any safety devices.

• Always follow the fabric care instructions provided by the garment manufacturer.

• Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

• DO NOT reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

Flammable and Hazardous Materials:

• To avoid creating flammable vapors which may explode, ignite, or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in, or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents, or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals, or thinner.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

Installation Safety:

• To reduce the risk of serious injury, install lockable door(s) to prevent public access to the rear of the tumblers.

To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, serious injury, or death to persons when using your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CE dryer, follow these basic precautions:

1. Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision of children is necessary when the tumbler is used near children. This is a safety rule for all appliances.

2. Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

3. Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

4. Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate this machine according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death, and/or property damage.

5. Run the tumbler with a load before putting the tumbler into service.

6. Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing. Disconnect power by shutting off the appropriate circuit breaker or fuse and by turning off the disconnect switch located on the rear of the tumbler.

7. All manually operated models are factory-equipped with an emergency stop button located on the front panel. Activation of the emergency stop switch stops all machine control circuit functions, but does not remove all electrical power from the machine.

The following warning labels will be found on the SPEED QUEEN JCB30CE drying tumbler and indicate important safety information:

• A clothes dryer produces combustible lint. The TUMBLER MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

• Do not touch rotating parts.

• Do not touch surfaces until they have cooled.

• WARNING!

• Do not operate without guards in place.

• Disconnect electrical power before servicing.

• To reduce the risk of accumulating unsafe concentrations of combustion gases, the tumbler MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

A comprehensive warning label states the following:

– DO NOT put articles soiled with flammable liquids or flammable cleaning solvents in the dryer.

– DO NOT store or use flammable liquids near this appliance.

– DO NOT spray or store aerosols in the vicinity of this appliance.

– Various chemicals used in laundries contain chlorine. When decomposed in a flame, these materials may rapidly corrode and destroy this appliance.

– The dryer must be exhausted outdoors, and the area around the dryer must be free of lint because the dryer produces combustible lint.

– DO NOT dry articles containing foam rubber, plastic, or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

– Use for drying water-washed fabrics only.

– DO NOT put articles soiled with vegetable or cooking oil in the dryer as these oils may not be removed during washing. Due to the remaining oil, the fabric may catch on fire by itself.

– DO NOT reach into the dryer until all moving parts have stopped.

– DO NOT let children play in the dryer.

The model and serial numbers for your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CE tumbler will be found on the nameplate. This nameplate is located on the rear of the tumbler or underneath the door hinge.

For the SPEED QUEEN JCB30CE, the minimum clearances to the nearest combustible material are as follows:

Top: 12 inches (30.5 cm) Minimum. 0 inches is permitted for the first 4 inches (10.2 cm) along the front of the machine.

Back: 0 inches. A minimum of 24 inches (61 cm) is recommended for service access.

Sides: 0 inches Permitted.

Upon delivery, visually inspect the crate, carton, and parts for any visible shipping damage. If there are signs of possible damage, have the carrier note the condition on the shipping papers before signing the receipt, or advise the carrier as soon as the damage is discovered. A written claim should be filed with the carrier immediately if articles are damaged or missing.

Remove the crate and protective cover and check the items listed on the packing list.

IMPORTANT: Remove the shipping tape from the two back draft dampers located in the exhaust thimble.

Floor: The SPEED QUEEN JCB30CE drying tumbler may be installed on any level floor capable of supporting 100 pounds per square foot (488 kg/m²). Floor covering materials such as carpeting or tile should be removed.

Layout: Whenever possible, the tumbler should be installed along an outside wall where the duct length can be kept to a minimum, and make-up air can be easily accessed. Construction must not block airflow at the top rear of the tumbler, as this would prevent an adequate air supply to the tumbler’s combustion chamber.

Proper venting and make-up air are essential for the safe and efficient operation of your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CE.

Venting:

For maximum efficiency and minimum lint accumulation, tumbler air must be exhausted to the outdoors by the shortest possible route.

• Exhaust ducts must be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, equivalent in strength to galvanized sheet steel not less than 0.0195 inches (0.495 mm) thick.

• All elbows should be sweep type. Do not use sheet metal screws to join vent sections.

• It is preferred to exhaust tumblers individually. At no point may the cross area of installed venting be less than the cross area of the tumbler’s exhaust thimble.

• The maximum allowable length of venting is 14 feet (4.3 m) and two 90° elbows or equivalent.

• If a main collector duct is used, it must be sized properly, tapered, and individual ducts must enter at a 45° angle. Never connect two tumbler ducts directly across from each other.

• Static back pressure measured 12 inches (30.5 cm) from the exhaust thimble must not exceed the maximum allowable pressure specified on the installation sticker on the rear of the tumbler.

• To reduce the risk of fire, DO NOT exhaust tumbler air into a window well, gas vent, chimney, or an enclosed, unventilated area.

• DO NOT install wire mesh or a screen in the exhaust opening, as lint will build up.

Make-Up Air:

A tumbler requires make-up air to replace the air it exhausts. The recommended make-up air opening is 144 square inches (928 sq. cm). At a minimum, tumblers must have at least 1 sq. inch (2.54 cm²) of opening for every 1000 BTU/hr of input rating for proper combustion. Protective louvers can reduce air movement by approximately 40%, so the opening size must compensate for this.

Warning for Dry Cleaning Environments: Solvent gases and vapors from dry cleaning machines create corrosive acids when drawn through the heater of a drying tumbler. Be sure make-up air is free of solvent gases and vapors. If dry cleaning machines are in the same area, the tumbler make-up air must come from a source free of these vapors.

Equivalent Length of Straight Duct for 90° Elbows:

WARNING: All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit before making any connections. Never attempt to connect a live circuit.

Follow these steps to connect electrical service to the tumbler:

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. A separate circuit breaker should be provided for each tumbler.

2. Perform the following connections:

a. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

b. Turn the disconnect switch on the tumbler to “off” and open the junction box.

c. Insert the conduit-encased leads through one of the knockout holes in the junction box.

d. Connect wire leads to the disconnect switch.

e. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

3. For three-phase units only, check the electrical service phase sequence:

a. Energize the electrical service and momentarily start the tumbler. Check the direction of the cylinder rotation. If the cylinder rotates clockwise (viewed from the front), the phase sequence is correct. If it rotates counterclockwise, proceed with step “b”.

b. Disconnect power and reverse any two leads at the connections.

4. Close the junction box cover and turn the disconnect switch to “on”.

The electrical requirements for the gas-powered SPEED QUEEN JCB30CE are as follows:

Grounding Instructions: The drying tumbler must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding will reduce the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance for electric current. The tumbler must be connected to a grounded metal, permanent wiring system; or an equipment grounding conductor must be run with the circuit conductors and connected to the PE Busbar. Improper connection of the equipment grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock.

Positioning:

The tumbler can be removed from its shipping skid before or after moving it to the installation location. To remove it from the skid, unscrew the four shipping capscrews (one at each corner). The lint panel door will need to be removed to access the two front capscrews.

NOTE: Do not throw these four capscrews away; they are the leveling legs.

Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible. All four legs must rest firmly on the floor so the weight of the tumbler is evenly distributed and it does not rock.

Leveling:

The SPEED QUEEN JCB30CE should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear, and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from side to side.

• Check the front-to-rear level by rotating the clothes cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that bottom rib.

• The side-to-side level should be checked by placing a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

Gas Requirements:

Before connecting, make certain the gas service is the same as specified on the nameplate. If it is not the same, DO NOT CONNECT THE GAS LINE. The gas burner orifice and gas valve must be converted first by authorized personnel.

• Natural Gas: Must be supplied at 6-1/2 ± 1-1/2 inch water column pressure (1.62 ± .37 kPa).

• L.P. Gas: Must be supplied at 11 ± .3 inch water column pressure (2.74 ± .07 kPa). A vent to the outdoors must be provided in the room where the tumbler is installed.

It is important that equal gas pressure is maintained at all tumbler gas connections. This can be best done by installing a one-inch pipe gas loop for multiple units.

Gas Connection Procedure:

1. Purge air and sediment from the gas service line before connecting it loosely to the tumbler.

2. Purge the remaining air until the odor of gas is detected, then tighten the connection. Use pipe compound resistant to the actions of L.P. gas on all pipe threads.

3. WARNING: Check all pipe connections, internal and external, for gas leaks using a soapy solution. To reduce the risk of explosion or fire, DO NOT USE AN OPEN FLAME TO CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS! Gas connections should be checked annually for leakage.

Pressure Testing Warning:

• The tumbler and its individual shut-off valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing of that system at test pressures in excess of 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa).

• The tumbler must be isolated from the gas supply piping system by closing its individual manual shut-off valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping system at a test pressure equal to or less than 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa).

Lighting the System:

1. Turn the machine disconnect switch, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position.

2. Turn the gas shut-off valve, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position (gas valve handle should be parallel with the gas line).

3. Start the tumbler, following the operating instructions that accompanied it.

NOTE: The ignition control circuitry will verify the airflow switch is open before starting the cylinder motor. Once the motor starts, air flowing through the tumbler will close the airflow switch. The tumbler will purge air for 18 seconds. Ignition will then start with a three-second release of gas from the gas valve and sparking of the ignitor. If ignition does not occur during the first three seconds, the ignition control will “lockout,” causing the gas valve to close and a red button on the ignition control to illuminate.

To reset a locked-out ignition system, open the access door and press the red button on the ignition control. Close and lock the access door, verify the gas shut-off valve is in the “on” position, and return to step three.

Shutting Down the System:

4. If the tumbler will not start, remove it from service by turning the machine disconnect switch to the “off” position and turning the gas shut-off valve to the “off” position (gas valve handle should be at a right angle to the gas line).

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension and adjust if necessary (refer to the Adjustment Section).

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line. The handle of the gas shut-off valve should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

5. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If the cylinder does not stop rotating, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

6. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

7. Start the tumbler and check the burner flame; adjust the gas inlet shutter if necessary.

8. Check the airflow switch operation by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 1-1/2″ (3.81 cm). Adjust if necessary.

9. Turn off the tumbler.

10. Check the airflow switch operation again by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 6″ (15.24 cm) with a full load.

Manual Dual Timer Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH and set the drying and cool-down selectors to their maximum settings.

2. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start, the heat system will turn on, the drying indicator will light, and the drying selector will rotate counterclockwise.

3. When the drying selector reaches zero (0), the heat system will shut off, the drying indicator will turn off, the cooling indicator will light, and the cooling selector will rotate counterclockwise.

4. When the cooling selector reaches zero (0), the motor will stop, and the cooling indicator will turn off, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

Coin Operated Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2 1/2 minute cool-down cycle will start.

5. When the metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

Electronic Control Tumbler:

The SPEED QUEEN JCB30CE with Electronic Control offers a variety of programming options. To learn how to use the Electronic Control, consult the supplemental manual.

NOTICE: Both air inlet shutters on the burner must be adjusted for proper combustion and maximum efficiency. Before adjusting, ensure all lint is removed from the lint compartment and lint screen.

Adjust the air shutter as follows:

1. Unlock and open the access door.

2. Start the tumbler and check the flame pattern. A correct air and gas mixture is indicated if the flame pattern is primarily blue with small yellow tips and bends to the right of the heater section. Too little air is indicated if the flame is yellow, lazy, and smokey.

3. To adjust the air shutter, loosen the air inlet shutter adjusting screw.

4. Open or close the air shutter as necessary to obtain the proper flame intensity.

5. After the shutter is adjusted for a proper flame, tighten the adjusting screw securely. The control panel may need to be removed temporarily to access the screws.

6. If the shutter is correctly adjusted but the flame pattern is straight up, it indicates insufficient primary air is flowing through the tumbler. If the flame pattern flares to the right and left, it indicates no air is flowing through the tumbler.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, airflow switch operation may be affected by a clogged lint screen, lack of make-up air, or obstructions in the ductwork. These conditions must be checked and corrected before adjusting the airflow switch. Always adjust the airflow at installation.

The airflow switch is set at the factory but can be adjusted if necessary. The goal is to adjust the counterweight so the airflow will force the disc away from the cabinet when the lint panel is opened 6 inches (15.24 cm) with a full load, shutting off the heat system.

1. Load the tumbler.

2. Start the tumbler. Open the lint panel 6 inches (15.24 cm). The airflow disc should move away from the cabinet, opening the switch contacts and shutting off the heat. This indicates proper adjustment.

3. If the switch is not opening as described (it’s not sensitive enough), depress the spring clip and move the counterweight TOWARD the disc. Retest by opening the lint panel and continue moving the counterweight toward the disc until it operates as described.

4. If the switch opens BEFORE the lint panel is opened the proper distance (it’s too sensitive), depress the spring clip and move the counterweight AWAY from the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight away from the disc until it operates as described.

Loading Door Switch Adjustment:

The loading door switch turns off the tumbler when the door is opened. To adjust it, follow these steps:

1. Start the tumbler.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the loading door. The switch should close with an audible “click” when the door is closed 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct point:

a. Close the loading door completely.

b. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the switch coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops.

c. Tighten the lower screw on the switch coupler.

d. Return to step 1 to verify the new adjustment.

Cylinder Door Strike Adjustment:

The door strike must be adjusted to have sufficient tension to hold the door closed against the force of a tumbling load. Proper adjustment is when 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) of pull is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut on the door strike, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Retighten the jamnut when finished.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation. The guard MUST be reinstalled on the rear of the tumbler after the belt adjustment is made.

Proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) by applying light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and motor pulley. The upper Poly V-belt is self-adjusting and requires no adjustment.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt that holds the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt:

a. Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

4. To loosen the V-belt:

a. Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt.

b. Turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension.

c. Tighten the upper and lower nut or adjusting bolt.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint in the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the lint screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the lint screen is torn, replace it immediately. A torn screen allows lint to flow into the ductwork system, restricting air circulation.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps allow lint to flow into the ductwork.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the probe will cause overheating of the tumbler.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

1. Perform the daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

3. (This step is missing from the document, likely a typo. It is skipped.)

4. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

5. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

6. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

7. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

8. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

9. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

Quarterly Maintenance:

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Clean accumulated lint and other debris from the front and back motor air vents.

5. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

6. Remove the screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

7. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension (refer to the Adjustments section).

8. Reinstall the rear drive guard.

9. Energize the electrical circuit by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

10. Turn on the gas supply. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

Biannual Maintenance:

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Perform quarterly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

5. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

6. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve (“OFF” position).

7. Unlock and open the service panel and inspect gas connections for evidence of leakage or loose connections. (NOTE: Spraying a mild solution of soap and water on joints will cause bubbles to appear on any leaking connections.)

8. Close and securely lock the service panel.

9. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose electrical connections.

10. Close the electrical junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit.

11. Turn on the gas supply (“ON” position).

You can use the following chart to track maintenance for your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CE. “Steam Models Only” tasks do not apply to the gas-powered JCB30CE.

To safely decommission your SPEED QUEEN JCB30CE, follow these steps:

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the gas supply external to the machine.

4. Turn off the manual gas shut-off valve on the machine.

5. Turn off the steam supply external to the machine (if applicable).

6. Remove all electric, gas, and steam connections.
