Please observe the following safety warnings for your HAIER BD-203H chest freezer:

WARNING: Keep ventilation openings, in the appliance enclosure or in the built-in structure, clear of obstruction.

WARNING: Do not use mechanical devices or other means to accelerate the defrosting process other than those recommended by the manufacturer.

WARNING: Do not damage the refrigerant circuit.

WARNING: Do not use electrical appliances inside the food storage compartment of the appliance, unless they are of the type recommended by the manufacturer.

Additionally, this appliance is designed for domestic use. If you have exchanged an old appliance for this new one, you must destroy any existing latch or bolt-locks on the old appliance to prevent children from locking themselves in. Escaping refrigerant can injure your eyes; in case of contact, wash your eyes instantly under plenty of running water and consult an eye specialist immediately.

You should install your HAIER BD-203H in a cool, well-aired, dry room. Strictly avoid high ambient temperatures and direct sunlight. Installing the appliance near a heat source like a heater or oven is highly inappropriate as it will increase compressor performance and power consumption.

If installation near a heat source is unavoidable, you must fit a suitable insulation plate between the appliance and the heat source and observe the following minimum distances:

From a gas or electric cooker: 3 cm

From a radiator or oven: 5 cm

From a wall, piece of furniture, or another appliance: 2 cm

The appliance must be placed horizontally on a level base to ensure the proper function and circuit of the refrigerant.

Before using your new HAIER BD-203H, follow these steps:

1. After installation, leave the appliance to stand in its final position for at least 2 hours before switching it on. This allows the refrigerant circuit to stabilise and prevents operating problems.

2. Thoroughly clean the interior compartment with a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar to remove the typical new appliance odour. Do not use washing liquids, sharp or granular cleaning implements, or any cleaning products containing soda.

3. Ensure the inner area, especially the corners, is absolutely dry before connecting the appliance to the power supply.

Your HAIER BD-203H must be connected to a power socket with a grounded connection, installed by an authorized specialist. Before plugging it in, ensure the voltage (V) on the appliance’s rating plate corresponds with your mains voltage.

To set the temperature, use the temperature control (thermostat). The control is intentionally resistant to turning to prevent accidental changes; use a coin or screwdriver to adjust it. The temperature is factory preset for satisfactory food storage, but you can adjust it between:

Min: (minimum number) for slight cooling.

Max: (maximum number) for the lowest temperature.

The compressor stops when the control is on position “0” or “OFF” (not all models have this function). A medium setting is recommended, but you should adjust based on ambient temperature, quantity of food stored, and frequency of opening.

Follow these steps to start your HAIER BD-203H for the first time:

1. Fully unpack the appliance.

2. Remove any polystyrene parts from the compressor chamber (if supplied).

3. Remove documents and accessories from inside the appliance.

4. Clean the interior with lukewarm water and vinegar, then dry thoroughly.

5. Close the appliance lid.

6. Insert the plug into the socket.

7. Switch on the appliance by turning the temperature control to the right, to the “Max” position. The green and red lights will turn on.

8. If equipped with a SUPER FREEZE SWITCH, turn it on (the yellow light will also go on).

9. Do not open the appliance for about 4 hours, or until the red light turns off, to allow the interior temperature to drop.

10. You can now fill the appliance with deep-frozen food.

11. Turn off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH after 24 hours at the latest.

12. To freeze fresh, unfrozen food, follow the instructions in the “Freezing/storage of fresh food” section.

The indicator lights on your HAIER BD-203H provide the following information:

Green (CONTROL): This light indicates that the appliance is connected to power and is operating. The green light must always be on when the appliance is plugged in and switched on.

Red (ALARM): This light indicates that the interior temperature is too high. It is normal for this light to be on during the first start-up, after defrosting, or when filling the freezer with fresh food. It should go off automatically when the temperature reaches approximately -15°C. If the red light stays on for more than 12 to 24 hours, there may be a serious problem.

Yellow (SUPER FREEZE): This light indicates that the SUPER FREEZE switch is on and the thermostat function is disabled. The compressor will cool continuously until the switch is turned off.

If your appliance’s indicator lights are laid out differently, the colours always apply: green = appliance operating; red = ALARM; yellow = SUPER FREEZE ON.

To properly freeze fresh food, follow these steps:

1. Pack fresh products in portions suitable for your household. Label the portions clearly with the product name, weight, quantity, freezing date, and use-by date.

2. Place fresh foods in the pre-freezing compartment at the side or on the bottom of the freezer, as this is the coldest part. Avoid direct contact with already frozen food.

3. Only fill the freezer with a quantity of fresh food suitable for its freezing capacity (see rating plate, XX kg/24h) within a 24-hour period.

4. If available, switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH.

5. After 24 hours, move the now deep-frozen goods from the bottom or pre-freeze shelf to a hanging basket to make space for more fresh food.

6. Turn off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (the yellow light will go off).

7. Set the temperature control according to the filling capacity. The storage temperature must always be at least -18°C.

To save energy when operating in normal ambient temperatures (+18 to +22°C), use the following temperature control settings based on the filling capacity:

Always remove the power plug before cleaning. For the exterior, occasionally clean with furniture polish or an enamel protecting product (never use it on the inside). Clean the lid seal (B) with warm water now and again, but do not use any cleaning products on it.

If your appliance has a condenser in the rear, remove dirt and dust from it from time to time. Dust and dirt impede heat release and increase energy consumption. Use a light brush or duster for this task.

Ice and frost layers that form on the inner walls act as insulation and must be removed periodically. Use a plastic or wood scraper without sharp edges. Do not use a screwdriver or other metal objects.

If you leave the appliance out of use for an extended period, leave it open to prevent odours from building up inside.

Under normal conditions, the freezer should be defrosted once or twice a year. Never use electrical appliances like hair dryers or devices with a naked flame to defrost the freezer.

Proceed as follows:

1. Get a suitable non-metallic container (e.g., plastic container or wash-basket).

2. Make absolutely sure you remove the plug from the power socket.

3. Dry your hands thoroughly to prevent skin damage from contact with ice (use gloves).

4. Remove all frozen food, roll it firmly in newspaper, and place it in the container in a cool, dry room.

5. Cover the container with a thick blanket.

6. Lift the divider (H) (if equipped) out of the guide rail.

7. Use the divider as a defrosting dish and push it under the side of the freezer where the defrosting water drain-plug is located.

8. Pull the drain plug out of the freezer bottom (if provided).

9. Scrape the thickest ice carefully from the inside and put it in the kitchen sink to melt.

10. To speed up defrosting, you can place a large pot of warm (not too hot) water on the freezer bottom.

11. For freezers without a drain plug, continuously wipe up the water with a sponge.

12. Thoroughly clean the inside with a mixture of warm water and vinegar, then rinse with clear water.

13. Wipe the freezer dry with an absorbent cloth and allow it to air for 3 to 4 minutes.

14. Replace the drain plug (if provided).

15. Empty the defrosting water dish and slide it back as a divider into the guide rails.

16. Close the chest lid and plug it back into the socket.

17. Set the temperature control to the maximum setting (green and red lamps go on) and switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (if provided) (yellow lamp also lights up).

18. Refill the frozen food, placing the oldest items on top.

19. When the red lamp goes off, reset the temperature control to a setting suitable for the filling capacity.

20. Switch off the SUPER FREEZER SWITCH after about 8 to 12 hours, or latest after 24 hours.

If your HAIER BD-203H has no function, check the following possible causes and remedies:

– Is the plug in good condition and properly plugged into the socket?

– Is the socket receiving current? You can test this by connecting a small appliance like a hand-mixer.

In the event of a power failure, the insulation of the appliance walls provides 10 to 12 hours of storage time. If it takes longer to resolve the problem, the food will begin to defrost. Take prompt action to eliminate the problem and, if necessary, move the frozen food to another appliance.

If your freezer is not performing correctly, check these possible causes:

– Did the appliance stand for at least 2 hours before being switched on? If not, the refrigerant circuit may not have stabilised. Unplug the freezer, wait, and then plug it back in. Do not open the chest for a further 12 hours, or until the red light goes off.

– Does the lid close properly and does the seal press firmly? Test by placing a piece of paper between the seal and the chest edge. It should be difficult to pull out from any side. If it pulls out easily, contact after-sales service.

– Is there heavy ice formation on the inner walls? This acts as insulation. The freezer needs to be defrosted.

– Is the appliance exposed to direct sunlight or near a heat source? Protect the appliance from heat sources and ensure proper installation clearance.

– Has too much warm food been added? The amount of food added should not exceed the freezing capacity listed on the rating plate (XXkg/24h).

Yes, some noise is normal and does not indicate a functional problem. The compressor (motor) is controlled by the thermostat and is not designed to operate continuously. Noise can be heard whenever the compressor switches on. This noise is produced by the motor operating and by the refrigerant flowing in the cooling system circuit. These noises are normal.

In unheated rooms and during cold weather conditions, condensation can build up on the outer walls of the appliance. This does not indicate a problem and will disappear when the weather becomes warmer.
