What are the main features of the TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA digital torque & angle wrench?

The TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA is a digital torque and angle wrench with the following features:

• Records and outputs the final torque and angle of a tightening operation.

• Performs Pass/Fail judgments based on set torque and angle thresholds.

• Uses torque and angle values to detect double tightening errors.

• Features a built-in Bluetooth® module for wireless data transmission.

How do I interpret the judgment features and result codes on the TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA?

The TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA judges the tightening result based on set thresholds for torque and angle. The result is displayed as a two-digit alphabet code.

The graph on the tool illustrates different judgment zones based on Torque (T) and Angle (θ). The key thresholds are:

Trg: Trigger torque (where angle measurement begins)

TL: Lower limit torque

TH: Higher limit torque

θw: Double tightening detection angle

θL: Lower limit angle

θH: Higher limit angle

The two-digit judgment code is interpreted as follows:

First digit alphabet (Torque Judgment):

“O”: OK (Torque is within the lower and higher limits)

“L”: Low NG (Torque is below the lower limit)

“H”: High NG (Torque is above the higher limit)

Second digit alphabet (Angle Judgment):

“D”: Double tightening detection NG (Angle is less than θw)

“O”: OK (Angle is within the lower and higher limits)

“L”: Low NG (Angle is below the lower limit)

“H”: High NG (Angle is above the higher limit)

Example: A judgment code of “LD” means “Low torque NG and Double tightening detection NG”.

What is the difference between Inspection mode (MODE-M) and Tightening mode (MODE-T) on the TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA?

The TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA has two measurement modes with distinct purposes:

Inspection mode (MODE-M): This mode is used for re-tightening and breakaway inspections. When high and low limit torque values are set, the tool will judge the measured torque result. The double tightening detection feature is turned off in this mode. The display will show “M” on the left side.

Tightening mode (MODE-T): This mode is used for the tightening process. It allows you to set high/low torque limits, high/low angle limits, a double tightening detection angle, and the direction of tightening. As the applied torque reaches about 80% of the low limit torque, the tool will beep intermittently and the blue LED will flash. Once the low limit torque is reached, the tool will emit a continuous beep and the red LED will light up. The display will show “T” on the left side.

What is the difference between RUN mode and Peak mode on the TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA?

The display mode of the TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA depends on the memory counter setting:

RUN mode (Counter is “000”): This mode shows the torque value being applied at the moment. The display returns to zero when the torque is released. If angle setting is on, the left display shows the angle value, with clockwise (CW) rotation being positive and counter-clockwise (CCW) being negative.

Peak mode (Counter is “001” to “999”): This mode captures and holds the maximum torque value applied during an operation. If low and high limit torque values are set, they are displayed in the upper corners of the left display. When a trigger torque is set, angle measurement starts once that torque is reached. The display holds the maximum angle value even after the torque is released. CW rotation is positive, and CCW is negative.

How do the Auto Memory, Mute, and Power Saving features work on the TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA?

Auto Memory / Reset:

After a tightening or measurement, the values are automatically saved, and the memory counter advances to the next position. The timing for this auto memory function can be set from 0.1 to 5 seconds. To disable this feature, set the timer to 0.0 seconds.

Mute:

By setting the buzzer to “Off” in the settings menu, the buzzer sound for key operations will be turned off. However, critical alarms such as the over-torque alarm, tightening completion notification, and NG judgment alarm will remain active.

Electric Power Saving:

If the tool is left without any key or tightening operation for about 1 minute, the 7-segment LED display will darken to save electricity. This mode is only available when the Auto Power Off feature is set to ON.

Auto Power Off:

The power will automatically turn off if the tool is left idle for a set time (default is 3 minutes) or is in an unloading condition (torque is less than 7.5% of max capacity). This feature can be set to OFF. In a “LoBATT” (low battery) condition, the power will turn off in 1 minute regardless of this setting.

How do I interpret the residual battery indicator on the TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA?

The residual battery amount is indicated on the display by a battery icon with four bars:

Four bars solid: Full

Two bars solid: Half remaining

One bar blinking: Time to charge battery

Empty icon blinking (“LoBATT” condition): No battery available. Recharge immediately. In this state, key operations will not work, and the tool will automatically turn off in 1 minute. Settings and data are retained.

What are the over-torque alarm and peak torque hold starting values for different models of the TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA?

How do I perform a tightening operation with the TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA?

This example demonstrates a tightening operation with specific settings. To measure angle, both angle setting and trigger torque must be enabled.

Example Settings:

• Angle setting (Ang): ON

• Measurement mode (SEL): MODE-T

• Lower limit torque (Lo): 30N·m

• Higher limit torque (Hi): 45N·m

• Trigger torque (Trg): 5N·m

• Double tightening detection angle (An_d): 5 deg

• Lower limit angle (An_L): 10 deg

• Higher limit angle (An_h): 50 deg

• Auto reset timer (Ar): 0.5 sec

• NG output setting (ng): NG_MAN

• Output format (dCn): M3+ID

Procedure:

1. Set the tool to Peak mode by setting the counter between “001” and “999” and begin the measurement.

2. When the applied torque reaches the trigger torque (5 N·m in this example), the tool starts measuring the angle.

3. As the torque approaches 80% of the lower limit torque (24 N·m), the tool will beep intermittently, and the blue LED will blink to alert you that the target is near.

4. When the torque reaches the lower limit (30 N·m), the tool will emit a continuous beep, and a solid blue LED will indicate the completion of tightening.

5. After releasing the torque load, the tool judges the measured data. This happens automatically if the Auto reset timer is on; otherwise, press the “MEM” key.

If the judgment is OK: The blue LED turns on, and the tool outputs the measured torque and angle data to the external device.

If the judgment is NG (with NG_MAN setting): A solid red LED will light up. The left display will alternate every second between showing the NG judgment code (e.g., “OD-NG”) and the measured angle. You must press “MEM” to save and send the data.

6. The tool saves the data, advances the counter to the next number, and resets the measured data display to zero, ready for the next operation.

How do I perform an inspection operation with the TOHNICHI CEM3-G-BTA?

This example demonstrates an inspection operation (re-tightening or breakaway). To measure angle, both angle setting and trigger torque must be enabled.

Example Settings:

• Angle setting (Ang): ON

• Measurement mode (SEL): MODE-M

• Lower limit torque (Lo): 35N·m

• Higher limit torque (Hi): 45N·m

• Trigger torque (Trg): 5N·m

• Double tightening detection angle (An_d): 0 deg (Note: this feature is off in MODE-M)

• Lower limit angle (An_L): 10 deg

• Higher limit angle (An_h): 50 deg

• Auto reset timer (Ar): 0.5 sec

• NG output setting (ng): NG_MAN

• Output format (dCn): M3+ID

Procedure:

1. Set the tool to Peak mode (counter between “001” and “999”) and begin the measurement.

2. When the applied torque reaches the trigger torque (5 N·m), the tool starts measuring the angle.

3. After completing the measurement and releasing the torque load, the tool judges the result. This happens automatically if the Auto reset timer is on; otherwise, press the “MEM” key.

If the judgment is OK: A solid blue LED turns on, and the tool outputs the measured torque and angle data to the external device.

If the judgment is NG (with NG_MAN setting): The red LED turns on, the buzzer sounds continuously, and the left display alternates every second between the NG judgment code (e.g., “LO-NG”) and the measured angle. You can press “MEM” to save and output the data, or press “C” to clear it.

4. Data Saving:

– If the judgment was OK or if Auto reset is used, the counter automatically advances to the next number, and the display resets.

– If the judgment was NG and you pressed “MEM” to save, the counter advances to the next number, but the display will show the memory data for that new counter if it already exists.
