What are the key guidelines for refrigerant piping work on my TCL TCD71D1HWH-DV?

ALL REFRIGERANT PIPING WORK MUST ONLY BE CARRIED OUT BY A QUALIFIED PERSON.

• Fully insulate the liquid and gas piping separately. Do not leave any gaps, otherwise a water leak may occur. (Seal any joints with glue or duct tape).

• When operating in the heating mode, the temperature of the gas piping can reach up to approximately 120°C so use insulation which has a suitable temperature rating.

• In cases where the temperature and humidity surrounding the refrigerant piping can exceed 30°C or RH80%, reinforce or use thicker pipe insulation (20mm or thicker). Otherwise condensation may form on the surface of the insulating material.

• Where additional refrigerant is required, be sure to use only R32. The use of other types of refrigerant could cause product malfunction, refrigerant leak, or explosion.

• Avoid introduction of air or other contaminants into the refrigerant piping. If any air, moisture, or other contaminant remains in the refrigerant piping after the completion of installation, the system will malfunction.

• Carry out sufficient ventilation if the refrigerant gas leaks during installation work.

• Be sure to use both a spanner and torque wrench together when connecting or disconnecting pipes to/from the unit.

• Use only a flaring block suitable for R32 tube.

• When connecting the flare nut, coat ether or ester oil only to the flare inner surface, and initially tighten by hand 3 to 4 turns before tightening firmly.

• Use the flare nuts included with the indoor unit.

• Over-tightening the flare nuts may cause the flare nuts or copper tube to fail and allow the refrigerant to leak.

What are the tightening torque specifications for the flare nuts on my TCL TCD71D1HWH-DV?

Use the following specifications when tightening flare nuts. You must use a torque wrench, but if one is unavailable in an emergency, follow the alternative method.

Table 2: Tightening Torque

Pipe size Tightening torque Flare dimensions A (mm)
6.4 (1/4″) 14.2-17.2 N·m (144-175 kgf·cm) 8.6-9.0
9.5 (3/8″) 32.7-39.9 N·m (333-407 kgf·cm) 12.6-13.0
12.7 (1/2″) 49.5-60.3 N·m (504-614 kgf·cm) 15.8-16.2
15.9 (5/8″) 61.8-75.4 N·m (630-770 kgf·cm) 19.3-19.7

Not recommended but in case of an emergency:

If you must install the unit without a torque wrench, follow this method. As you keep tightening the flare nut with a spanner, there is a point where the tightening torque suddenly increases. From that position, further tighten the flare nut using the angle shown below. After the work is finished, make sure to check that there is no gas leak.

Table 3: Emergency Tightening Angle

Pipe size Further tightening angle Recommended arm length of tool
6.4 (1/4″) 60 to 90 degrees Approx. 150mm
9.5 (3/8″) 60 to 90 degrees Approx. 200mm

How do I properly install the drain piping for my TCL TCD71D1HWH-DV?

WARNING: Install the drain pipe as shown and take measures against condensation. Improperly installed piping may result in water leaks and eventually wet furniture and belongings.

1. After the piping work is finished, check that the drainage flows smoothly by pouring approximately 1 Litre of water gradually into the drain tray and checking the drainage flow.

2. For units with a pump, the drain pipe outlet can be raised up to 600mm above the ceiling. Keep the horizontal pipe length and offset of the pipe within the limit shown in the manual (100 or less) to avoid overflow.

3. Route the pipes to ensure drainage can occur with no problems. Employ piping with either the same diameter or a larger diameter (nominal diameter 25mm, outside diameter 32mm) than that of the connecting pipe.

4. Keep the drain pipe short and sloping downward at a gradient of at least 1/100 to prevent air pockets from forming.

5. To prevent the drain pipe from sagging, secure the pipe every 1 to 1.5m.

6. Use the provided drain hose and clamp. Tighten the clamp firmly.

7. Insulate the drain hose inside the building.

8. As a safety measure, use a safety drain tray (field supplied) and drain separately.

9. Insulate the drain pipe using piping thermal insulation to prevent condensate dripping during humid conditions.

10. To ensure no excessive pressure is applied to the included drain hose, do not bend or twist it when installing.

Work Procedure:

• Make sure to insert the drain hose (the end mode of soft PVC) to the end of the step part of the drain socket.

• Attach the hose clamp to the drain hose around 10mm from the end, and fasten the screw with 5mm left to the nut.

• Do not apply adhesives on this end.

• Do not use acetone-based adhesives to connect to the drain socket.

How do I perform a drain test for my TCL TCD71D1HWH-DV with a pump?

1. Conduct a drain test after completion of the electrical work.

2. During the trial, make sure that drain flows properly through the piping and that no water leaks from connections.

3. In case of a new building, conduct the test before the ceiling is furnished.

4. Be sure to conduct this test even when the unit is installed in the heating season.

5. Test method:

• Remove the test cover.

• Fill the water pan with 2 liters of water by stow tube (prepare on site).

• Turn on the unit in COOLING mode. You will hear the drain pump work. Check whether the 60% water is discharged properly (a 1-minute lag is possible, depending on the length of the drain pipe). Check whether water leaks from the joints.

• Turn off the air conditioner, and put the cap back on.

When and how should I add or reduce refrigerant for my TCL TCD71D1HWH-DV based on pipe length?

The TCL TCD71D1HWH-DV models are pre-charged with refrigerant for 20 meters of connecting piping. Adjustments are needed if your pipe length is different.

When the pipeline length exceeds 20 meters: Additional refrigerant is required. The formula is: Additional charge (kg) = {Main length (m) – 20(m)} × 0.03 (kg/m).

When the pipeline is longer than 10m but shorter than 20m: Refrigerant must be reduced for optimal performance. The formula is: Amount of refrigerant reduced (kg) = {20(m) – main length (m)} × 0.03 (kg/m).

When the pipeline is longer than 5m but shorter than 10m: Refrigerant must be reduced. The formula is: Amount of refrigerant reduced (kg) = {20(m) – main length (m)} × 0.03 (kg/m).

When the pipeline is shorter than 5 meters: The refrigerant shall be at the rated charge indicated on the nameplate for 5 meters of refrigerant pipeline.

What should I check if my TCL TCD71D1HWH-DV won’t run?

If your air conditioner fails to function normally but is not displaying an error code, please check the following items before calling for maintenance.

Cause Corrective measure
If you turn off the unit and then immediately turn it on, in order to protect the compressor and avoid system overload, the compressor will delay running for 3 minutes. Please wait for a while.
Wire connection is wrong. Connect wires according to the wiring diagram.
Fuse or circuit breaker is broken. Replace the fuse or switch on the circuit breaker.
Power failure. Restart after power is resumed.
Power plug is loose. Reinsert the power plug.
Wired controller has low battery. Replace the batteries.

What can I do about bad cooling or heating performance with my TCL TCD71D1HWH-DV?

If you are experiencing poor cooling or heating, please check the following items.

Cause Corrective measure
Air inlet and outlet of indoor or outdoor units have been blocked. Clear the obstacles and keep the room for indoor and outdoor units well ventilated.
Improper temperature setting. Reset a proper temperature.
Fan speed is too low. Reset a proper fan speed.
Air flow direction is not right. Change the direction of air louvers.
Doors or windows are open. Close them.
Exposed under direct sunshine. Put on curtains or louvers in front of the windows.
Too many heat sources in the room. Remove unnecessary heat sources.
Filter is blocked or dirty. Send for a professional to clean the filter.

What are some normal phenomena that are not operation failures for my TCL TCD71D1HWH-DV?

The following situations are not operation failures.

Phenomenon Time of occurrence Cause
Mist comes from the air conditioner. During operation. If the unit is running under high humidity, the wet air in the room will be quickly cooled down.
Water full protection During operation. When in cooling mode, if the water level is too high, the machine will shut down for protection to prevent water leakage due to full water. The water pump continues to draw water. After the water level dropped, the machine returned to its normal working state. The water full protection frequency is less than or equal to 3 times.
System switches to heating mode after defrosting. Defrosting process will generate some water, which will turn to water vapor.
The air conditioner is buzzing at the beginning of operation. Temperature controller will be buzzing when it starts working. The noise will become weak 1 min later.
When the unit is turned on, it purrs. When the system is just started, the refrigerant is not stable. About 30s later, the purr of the unit becomes low.
About 20s after the unit first enables the heating mode or there is refrigerant brushing sound when defrosting under heating. It’s the sound of 4-way valve switching direction. The sound will disappear after the valve changes its direction.
There is hissing sound when the unit is started or stopped and a slight hissing sound during and after operation. It’s the sound of gaseous refrigerant that stops flowing and the sound of drainage system.
There is a sound of crunching during and after operation. Because of temperature change, front panel and other components may be swelled up and cause abrasion sound.
There is a hissing sound when the unit is turned on or suddenly stopped during operation or after defrosting. Because refrigerant suddenly stops flowing or changes the flow direction.
The unit starts operation after being unused for a long time. Dust inside the indoor unit comes out together with the air.
The air conditioner generates some smell. During operation. The room smell or the smell of cigarette comes out through the indoor unit.
