You can find your serial number or International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) on the packaging materials. Alternatively, on your TCL 40 NXTPAPER 5G, go to Settings > System > About phone > Status > IMEI and serial number.

Back button: Touch to go back to the previous screen, or to close a dialog box, options menu, the notification panel, etc.

Home button: From any application or screen, touch to return to the Home screen. Touch and hold to turn on Google Assistant.

Recent apps: Touch to view applications you’ve recently accessed.

Power key:

• Press to lock or light up the screen.

• Press and hold to show the popup menu to select from Power off/Restart/Aeroplane mode/Cast.

• Press and hold the Power key and Volume down key to take a screenshot.

• Press and hold for at least 10 seconds to force a reboot.

• Double-press to open the camera.

Volume Keys:

• Adjust the earpiece or headset volume during a phone call.

• Adjust the media volume for streaming, listening, and viewing on media apps.

• Mute the ringtone of an incoming call.

• While using the camera, press the Volume up or Down key to take a photo or press and hold to take burst shots.

1. Insert the provided SIM pin into the hole on the SIM tray.

2. Pull out the SIM tray.

3. Place the nano-SIM card or microSD card into the tray slot and carefully close the SIM tray.

Note: Your TCL 40 NXTPAPER 5G only supports nano-SIM cards. Do not attempt to insert other SIM types, as this may cause damage to your phone.

Powering on: Hold down the Power key until the phone powers on. Unlock your phone (Swipe, PIN, Password, Pattern, etc.) if necessary.

Powering off: Press and hold the Power key until options appear, then select Power off.

Touch: To access an application, touch it with your finger.

Touch and hold: To enter the available options for an item, touch and hold it.

Drag: Place your finger on the screen to drag an object to another location.

Slide/Swipe: Slide the screen to scroll up and down applications, images, and web pages. You can also slide the screen horizontally.

Flick: Similar to swiping, but flicking makes the screen move quicker.

Pinch/Spread: Place two fingers on the screen surface and draw them apart or together to scale an element on the screen.

Rotate: Automatically change the screen orientation from portrait to landscape by turning the phone sideways.

Notification Panel: When there are notifications, touch and drag down the Status bar to open the Notification panel to read more detailed information. Touch a notification to open the corresponding app. Touch CLEAR ALL to clear all event-based notifications.

Quick Settings Panel: Touch and drag down from the top of the screen to open the Quick settings panel. Touch icons to enable or disable functions or change modes. Touch the Edit icon to customize the panel. Touch the settings icon to access the full Settings menu.

To lock the screen:

• If your phone remains inactive for a period of time, it will automatically lock the screen. To set the timeout period, go to Settings > Display > Sleep.

• You can also manually lock the screen by pressing the Power key once.

To set an unlock method:

To protect your phone and privacy, you can lock the screen with a pattern, PIN, password, fingerprint, or face. To create a screen unlock method, go to Settings > Security & biometrics > Screen lock, Fingerprint or Face unlock.

To unlock the screen:

Press the Power key once to light up the screen, then swipe up and unlock the screen with the method you have set (Pattern, PIN, password, fingerprint, or face).

• Face Unlock: Hold your phone 20-50 cm from your face and position it in the square shown on the screen. For best results, enroll your face key indoors and away from direct sunlight.

• Fingerprint Unlock: Touch the fingerprint sensor with an enrolled finger to unlock the screen.

Add items: You can touch and hold a folder, an application, or a widget and drag the item to your preferred Home screen.

Reposition items: Touch and hold an item and drag it to the desired position and then release.

Remove items: Touch and hold an item, drag it up to the top of the ‘remove’ icon, and release it after it turns red.

Create folders: To create a folder, stack one application on top of another. To rename a folder, open it and touch the folder’s title bar to input the new name.

Wallpaper customization: Touch and hold an empty area on the Home screen, then touch Wallpaper & style to customize your wallpaper.

To consult recently used applications, touch the Recent apps button. This will show thumbnails of applications you’ve recently accessed.

• Touch a thumbnail in the window to open the application.

• Touch one thumbnail and slide it up to close the application.

• Slide right or left to switch between applications.

• Touch CLEAR ALL at the bottom of the screen to close all running applications.

Press the Volume key to adjust the Media volume. When the volume control appears on the screen, touch the icon below the slider to adjust Media, Ring, Alarm, and Notification volume individually.

You can edit text that you have entered:

• Touch and hold or double-touch within the text you want to edit.

• Drag the tabs to change the amount of text to edit.

• To insert new text, touch where you want to type, or touch and hold a blank area. The cursor will blink and a tab will appear. Drag the tab to move the cursor.

• If you have cut or copied any text, touch the tab to show the Paste and Select all options.

Launch Camera: You can open the Camera app from the Home Screen, from the Lock Screen by swiping left on the camera icon, or by double-pressing the Power key.

To take a photo: The screen acts as the viewfinder. Position the object or landscape in the viewfinder and touch the screen to focus if necessary. Touch the shutter button to capture the photo. You can also touch and hold the shutter button to take burst shots.

To take a video: Touch VIDEO to change to video mode. Touch the record button to start recording. During recording, you can touch the shutter icon to take a picture. Touch the pause icon to pause recording, and the stop icon to stop recording. The video will be automatically saved.

Switch between cameras: Touch the switch camera icon to switch between the front and back cameras.

Zoom: Pinch your fingers together to zoom out, or spread them apart to zoom in.

Slide left or right in the camera app to switch between modes:

• AUTO: The default mode for the camera.

• VIDEO: To access video mode.

• ONE SHOT: To access one shot mode.

• PORTRAIT: Creates a depth of field effect, highlighting your subject with a blurred background.

• PRO: Allows you to fine-tune parameters like ISO, WB exposure time, aperture, and shutter speed.

• PANO: To take panoramic photos.

• MORE: Accesses more modes, such as Dark shot for low-light conditions.

1. Touch the Phone icon, usually in the Favourites tray.

2. Enter the desired number from the dial pad and touch the call icon.

3. Alternatively, select a contact from Contacts or Call logs by sliding or touching the tabs, then make the call.

International call: Touch and hold 0 to enter “+”, then enter the international country prefix followed by the full phone number and touch the call icon.

Emergency call: If your phone has network coverage, dial the emergency number and touch the call icon. This may work even without a SIM card.

When you receive a call:

• Touch ANSWER, or swipe up the icon to answer.

• Touch DECLINE, or swipe down the icon to reject.

• Touch Reply to reject the call by sending a preset message.

Swap calls: When you accept two calls, touch the Swap icon to switch between the two lines. The current call will be put on hold.

Conference calls:

1. Place a call to the first participant.

2. Touch the ‘Add call’ icon to add another call.

3. Enter the phone number of the next person and touch the call icon. You can also add participants from Call logs or Contacts.

4. Touch the ‘Merge’ icon to start the conference.

5. Touch the ‘End call’ icon to end the conference call and disconnect all callers.

Adding a contact:

1. Open the Contacts app.

2. Touch the ‘+’ icon in the contact list to create a new contact.

3. Enter the contact’s name and other information. Scroll up and down to move between fields.

4. When finished, touch Save.

Editing a contact:

1. Open the Contacts app and select the contact you wish to edit.

2. Touch the edit icon in the contact details screen.

3. Make your changes.

4. When finished, touch Save.

1. Open the Messages app and touch ‘Start chat’ to begin a new message.

Sending a text message (SMS):

• In the ‘To’ bar, enter a mobile phone number or select a contact.

• Touch the ‘Text message’ bar to enter your message.

• When finished, touch the send icon.

Sending a multimedia message (MMS):

• An SMS is automatically converted to an MMS when media files (images, videos, audio, etc.) are attached, or when subject or email addresses are added.

• Follow the steps for sending an SMS.

• Touch the ‘+’ icon to attach files, share your location, or share a contact.

• Touch the camera icon to take a photo/video or attach one you have already taken.

• When finished, touch the send icon.

You can add new events from any Calendar view.

1. Open the Calendar app.

2. Touch the ‘+’ icon.

3. Fill in all required information for the new event. If it is a whole-day event, you can turn on ‘All-day’.

4. When finished, touch Save at the top of the screen.

1. From the app list, open the Clock app and touch ‘Alarm’.

2. Turn on an existing alarm or touch ‘+’ to add a new alarm.

3. Set the alarm time and other options.

4. Touch OK to save.

To delete an alarm, touch the trash icon next to the selected alarm.

3. Once Wi-Fi is turned on, detected Wi-Fi networks will be listed.

To share your phone’s data connection via Wi-Fi, go to Settings > Connections > Hotspot & tethering to activate this function.

To rename or secure your mobile hotspot:

1. Go to Settings > Connections > Hotspot & tethering > Mobile hotspot.

2. Touch Hotspot name to rename the network SSID or touch Security to set your network security (e.g., set a password).

3. Touch OK.

You can use the FOTA (Firmware Over The Air) upgrade to update your phone’s software.

1. To access updates, from the app list, touch Settings > System > System Update.

2. Turn on data connection or Wi-Fi before searching for updates.

3. With Wi-Fi turned on, the system can discover if a new firmware version is available and will begin to download it automatically. Once finished, a pop-up dialog will give you the option of updating your phone now or later.

If automatic updates are turned off, you will receive a notification in the Status bar when an update is available.

Before contacting the service center, try these steps:

• For optimal operation, fully charge the battery.

• To improve performance, remove unnecessary files or apps from your phone.

• Update your phone’s software via Settings > System > System Update.

• Reset your phone via Settings > System > Reset > Factory data reset. This will erase all your data, so it is strongly advised to back up your phone data before resetting.

• If the phone can’t be switched on, charge it for at least 20 minutes to ensure minimum battery power, then switch it on again.

• If the phone is stuck in a loop during the power-on animation and the user interface can’t be accessed, press and hold the Power key to reset it.

• If neither method works, reset the phone by pressing the Power key and the Volume up key at the same time. Release the power key when the device vibrates, then select Wipe data / factory reset > Factory data reset to reset.

• Make sure you are using the TCL charger that came with the phone.

• Ensure the battery is not completely discharged; if it has been empty for a long time, it may take around 20 minutes to display the charging indicator.

• Make sure charging is carried out under normal conditions (0°C to 45°C).

• When abroad, check that the voltage input is compatible.

• Try connecting to the network by moving to a different physical location.

• Verify the network coverage with your operator.

• Check with your operator that your SIM card is valid.

• Try connecting at a later time if the network is overloaded.

• Make sure you have dialed a valid number and have touched the call icon.

• For international calls, check the country and area codes.

• Make sure your phone is connected to a network, and the network is not overloaded or unavailable.

• Check your subscription status with your operator (credit, SIM card valid, etc.).

• Make sure you have not barred outgoing calls.

• Make sure your phone is not in aeroplane mode.

• Make sure your phone is switched on and connected to a network.

• Adjust the volume during a call by pressing the Volume key.

• Make sure that the receiver, connector, and speaker on your phone are clean.

• Check to make sure the USB port is not broken. If it’s not working, try another USB port on your computer.

• Make sure USB drivers are properly installed.

• If you are using a Windows computer, make sure it supports MTP mode. If you are using a Mac, make sure to install Android File Transfer.

• Make sure you follow the complete charge time (minimum 120 minutes).

• After a partial charge, the battery level indicator may not be exact. Wait for at least 20 minutes after removing the charger to obtain an exact indication.

• Adjust the screen brightness as appropriate.

• Extend the email auto-check interval for as long as possible.

• Update news and weather information on manual demand, or increase their auto-check interval.

• Exit background-running applications if they are not being used for extended periods of time.

• Turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or GPS when not in use.

This heating is a normal consequence of the CPU handling excessive data from prolonged calls, game playing, internet surfing, or running other complex applications. Ending these actions will make your phone return to its normal temperature.

You will need to perform a factory data reset. Please be aware that this will erase all data on your phone. If you still cannot access your phone after the reset, apply to the authorized repair center, but remember that it will not be regarded as a warranty case.

• Check if there is any damage to the screen. If so, back up your data and seek technical assistance.

• If using a third-party app, ensure it’s compatible with your device and Android version. Try uninstalling it.

• Check if the issue occurs during charging. If yes, try the official charger and data cable.

• Ensure the temperature is within the standard working range (-10°C to 60°C).

• If there is a screen protector, try removing it to see if the touchscreen works.

• Make sure there are no stains like water or sweat on the screen. Wipe it clean and try again.

• If it still doesn’t work, reset the phone or update the software.

• Go to Settings > System > Backup.

• You can also back up your data to another phone via the Switch Phone app. Swipe up the home screen to find the search bar, enter “Switch Phone,” and transfer data by following the instructions.
