Failure to install, maintain, and/or operate the SPEED QUEEN SC75CG according to the manufacturer’s instructions may result in conditions which can produce serious injury, death, and/or property damage. It is important to understand that common sense, caution, and carefulness are factors that must be supplied by the person(s) installing, maintaining, or operating the tumbler.

General Precautions:

• To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, serious injury or death, do not operate the tumbler if it does not perform according to instructions. Immediately disconnect electrical service, shut off the gas supply, and contact an authorized service representative.

• Read all instructions before using the tumbler.

• Do not tamper with controls or bypass any safety devices.

• Always follow the fabric care instructions supplied by the garment manufacturer.

• Remove laundry immediately after the tumbler stops.

• Do not reach into the tumbler if the cylinder is revolving.

• Do not allow children to play on or in the tumbler. Close supervision is necessary when the tumbler is used near children.

• Before the tumbler is removed from service or discarded, remove the door to the drying compartment.

• Do not install or store the tumbler where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

• Always disconnect the electrical power to the tumbler before servicing.

• The tumbler produces combustible lint and MUST BE EXHAUSTED OUTDOORS.

• Do not touch rotating parts or hot surfaces.

• Do not operate without guards in place.

Flammable Materials Warning:

To avoid creating any flammable vapors which may explode, ignite, or cause corrosive damage, DO NOT dry the following materials:

• Articles that have been cleaned in, soaked in, washed in, or spotted with gasoline, dry cleaning solvents, or other flammable/explosive substances.

• Plastics or articles containing foam rubber or similarly textured rubberlike materials.

• Articles that have traces of flammable substances like cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals, or thinner.

• Do not put articles soiled with vegetable or cooking oil in the dryer, as these oils may not be removed during washing. Due to the remaining oil, the fabric may catch on fire by itself.

• Articles containing wax or cleaning chemicals.

• Fiberglass curtains or draperies (unless the label says it can be done).

• Do not store or use flammable liquids or spray aerosols near this appliance.

Upon delivery, visually inspect the crate, carton, and parts for any visible shipping damage. If the crate or cover are damaged or show signs of possible damage, have the carrier note the condition on the shipping papers before signing the shipping receipt, or advise the carrier of the condition as soon as it is discovered. Remove the crate and protective cover as soon as possible and check the items listed on the packing list. A written claim should be filed with the carrier immediately if articles are damaged or missing.

IMPORTANT: Remove the shipping tape from the two back draft dampers located in the exhaust thimble.

The tumbler may be removed from its shipping skid before moving to the installation location. To do this, unscrew the four shipping capscrews (one at each corner). The lint panel door will need to be removed to access the two front capscrews.

NOTE: Do not throw these four capscrews away – they are the leveling legs.

Screw the four leveling legs back into the level adjusting fittings from the top. Slide the tumbler to its permanent location. Keep the tumbler as close to the floor as possible, and ensure all four legs rest firmly on the floor so the weight is evenly distributed and the tumbler does not rock.

Leveling the Tumbler:

Each tumbler should be leveled within 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from front to rear, and 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) from side to side. To check the front-to-rear level, rotate the clothes cylinder until one rib is at the bottom, then place a level on that bottom rib. The side-to-side level should be checked by placing a level on the front and rear of the top panel.

Venting Requirements:

Properly sized exhaust ducts are essential for proper operation and to prevent fire hazards. For maximum efficiency, tumbler air must be exhausted to the outdoors by the shortest possible route.

• Exhaust ducts must be constructed of sheet metal or other noncombustible material, equivalent in strength to galvanized sheet steel not less than 0.0195 inches (0.495 mm) thick.

• All elbows should be sweep-type. Do not use sheet metal screws to join vent sections, as interior surfaces must be smooth to reduce lint accumulation.

• The maximum allowable length of venting is 14 feet (4.3 m) with two 90° elbows or equivalent. If a longer duct is needed, the diameter must be increased.

• Where the exhaust duct pierces a combustible wall or ceiling, the opening must be 4 inches (10.2 cm) larger than the duct’s diameter, with the duct centered in the opening.

• It is preferred to exhaust tumblers individually. If a main collector duct is used, it must be properly sized and tapered, with individual tumbler ducts entering at a 45° angle in the direction of airflow.

• WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and accumulation of combustible gases, DO NOT exhaust tumbler air into a window well, gas vent, chimney, or an enclosed, unventilated area like an attic, wall, ceiling, or crawl space.

Make-Up Air Requirements:

The tumbler requires provisions for make-up air to replace the air it exhausts.

• The recommended make-up air opening for the 75-pound tumbler is 195 square inches (1258 sq. cm).

• At a minimum, there must be at least 1 square inch of opening for every 1000 BTU/hr of the input rating.

• Protective louvers can reduce air movement by approximately 40%. The opening size must be increased to compensate for the area taken up by louvers.

• If other gas-fired appliances are in the same room, the make-up air opening must be increased sufficiently to prevent downdrafts in any vents when all tumblers are in operation.

• WARNING: Solvent gases and vapors from dry cleaning machines create corrosive acids when drawn through the heater. Ensure make-up air is free of solvent gases and vapors.

WARNING: All electrical connections should be made by a qualified electrician. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, de-energize the electrical circuit before making any connections. Never attempt to connect a live circuit.

Connection Steps:

1. Install a circuit breaker as close to the tumbler as possible. A separate circuit breaker should be provided for each tumbler.

2. Connect conduit-encased leads to the circuit breaker.

3. Turn the disconnect switch on the tumbler to “off” and open the junction box.

4. Insert the conduit-encased leads through one of the knockout holes in the junction box and connect the wire leads to the disconnect switch.

5. Connect a ground wire to the PE Busbar in the junction box.

6. For three-phase units only, check the phase sequence. Energize the service and momentarily start the tumbler. The cylinder should rotate clockwise when viewed from the front. If it rotates counterclockwise, de-energize the circuit and reverse any two leads at the connections.

7. Close the junction box cover and turn the disconnect switch to “on”.

Grounding Instructions:

The drying tumbler must be grounded. In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding reduces the risk of electric shock by providing a path of least resistance for electric current. The tumbler must be connected to a grounded metal, permanent wiring system; or an equipment grounding conductor must be run with the circuit conductors and connected to the PE Busbar.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and electric shock, check with a qualified serviceman for proper grounding procedures. An improper connection of the equipment grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. If the electrical supply is coming from a three-phase service, DO NOT connect a “Stinger Leg” to a single-phase machine.

Before connecting, make certain the gas service is the same as that specified on the tumbler’s nameplate. The required pressure for Natural Gas is 6-1/2 ± 1-1/2 inch water column, and for L.P. Gas it is 11 ± .3 inch water column.

1. Purge air and sediment from the gas service line before connecting it loosely to the tumbler.

2. Purge the remaining air until the odor of gas is detected, then tighten the connection.

3. Use pipe compound that is resistant to the actions of L.P. gas on all pipe threads.

WARNING: Check all pipe connections, internal and external, for gas leaks using a soapy solution. To reduce the risk of explosion or fire, DO NOT USE AN OPEN FLAME TO CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS! Gas connections should be checked annually for leakage.

WARNING: The tumbler and its individual shut-off valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during any pressure testing of that system at test pressures in excess of 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa). The tumbler must be isolated from the gas supply piping system by closing its individual manual shut-off valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping system at a test pressure equal to or less than 1/2 psig (3.45 kPa).

Lighting the System:

1. Turn the machine disconnect switch, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position.

2. Turn the gas shut-off valve, located on the rear of the tumbler, to the “on” position (gas valve handle should be parallel with the gas line).

3. Start the tumbler, following the operating instructions that accompanied it.

NOTE: The ignition control circuitry will first verify the airflow switch is open. Once the cylinder motor starts, the airflow switch will close. The tumbler will purge air for 18 seconds, then ignition will start by a three-second release of gas and sparking of the ignitor. If ignition does not occur, the control will “lockout,” causing the gas valve to close and a red button on the ignition control to illuminate.

To Reset the Ignition System: Open the access door and press the red button on the ignition control. Close and lock the access door, verify the gas shut-off valve is in the “on” position, and return to step 3.

Shutting Down the System:

If the tumbler will not start, remove it from service by turning the machine disconnect switch to the “off” position and turning the gas shut-off valve to the “off” position (gas valve handle should be at a right angle to the gas line).

1. Remove or open all panels and inspect accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for security.

2. Check belt tension and adjust if necessary (refer to the Adjustment Section).

3. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler circuit breaker and turn on the tumbler disconnect switch.

4. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line (gas models only). The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

5. Press and hold in the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. Release the button and open the cylinder door. The cylinder should stop rotating within seven (7) seconds after the door is opened 3″ (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4″ (0.635 cm). If it does not stop, adjust the cylinder door interlock.

6. Load the tumbler with clothes or clean rags.

7. Start the tumbler and check the burner flame, adjusting the gas inlet shutter if necessary.

8. Check the air flow switch operation by opening the lint panel. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 1-1/2″ (3.81 cm). Adjust if necessary.

9. Turn off the tumbler.

10. Check air flow switch operation by opening the lint panel again with a full load. The heating system should shut off when the lint panel is opened approximately 6″ (15.24 cm).

For Manual Dual Timer Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH and set the drying and cool down selectors to their maximum settings.

2. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start, the heat system will turn on, the drying indicator will light, and the drying selector will rotate counterclockwise.

3. When the drying selector reaches zero (0), the heat system will shut off, the drying indicator will turn off, the cooling indicator will light, and the cooling selector will rotate counterclockwise.

4. When the cooling selector reaches zero (0), the motor will stop and the cooling indicator will turn off, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

For Coin Operated Tumbler:

1. Set the temperature selector to HIGH.

2. Insert the required amount of coins.

3. Press and hold the Push-to-Start Button for approximately three (3) seconds. The motor will start and the heat system will turn on.

4. Near the end of the cycle, a preset 2 1/2 minute cool down cycle will start.

5. When the metered time expires, the motor will stop, indicating the drying cycle is finished.

For Electronic Control Tumbler:

The tumbler comes equipped with Electronic Control, which gives the owner a variety of programming options. To learn how to use the Electronic Control, consult the supplemental manual.

NOTICE: Both air inlet shutters on the burner must be adjusted for proper combustion and maximum efficiency. Before adjusting, ensure all lint is removed from the lint compartment and lint screen.

1. Unlock and open the access door.

2. Start the tumbler and check the flame pattern. A correct air and gas mixture is indicated if the flame pattern is primarily blue, with small yellow tips, and bends to the right of the heater section. Too little air is indicated if the flame is yellow, lazy, and smokey.

3. To adjust the air shutter, loosen the air inlet shutter adjusting screw.

4. Open or close the air shutter as necessary to obtain the proper flame intensity.

5. After the shutter is adjusted, tighten the air shutter adjusting screw securely.

6. If the shutter is correctly adjusted but the flame pattern is straight up, it indicates insufficient primary air is flowing through the tumbler. A flame pattern that flares to the right and left indicates no air is flowing through the tumbler.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire, air flow switch operation may be affected by a clogged lint screen, lack of make-up air, or obstructions in the ductwork. These conditions must be checked and corrected before adjusting the air flow switch.

The counterweight should be adjusted so that air flow will force the disc away from the cabinet when the lint panel is opened 6 inches (15.24 cm) with a full load. Adjust as follows:

1. Load the tumbler.

2. Start the tumbler. Open the lint panel 6 inches (15.24 cm). The airflow disc should move away from the cabinet, opening the switch contacts and shutting off the heat system. This indicates proper operation.

3. If the switch is not opening as described (needs to be MORE sensitive), depress the spring clip and move the counterweight toward the disc. Retest by opening the lint panel and continue moving the counterweight toward the disc until it operates correctly.

4. If the switch opens BEFORE the lint panel is opened the proper distance (needs to be LESS sensitive), depress the spring clip and move the counterweight away from the disc. Retest and continue moving the counterweight away from the disc until it operates correctly.

Loading Door Switch Adjustment

This switch turns off the tumbler anytime the loading door is opened.

1. Start the tumbler following its operating instructions.

2. Slowly open the loading door. The cylinder and heating system should stop when the door is open 3 inches (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4 inch (0.635 cm).

3. Slowly close the loading door. The switch should close with an audible “click” when the loading door is closed 3 inches (7.5 cm) plus or minus 1/4 inch (0.635 cm).

4. If the switch does not close at the correct point, close the door completely. Loosen the lower screw on the switch coupler and rotate the coupler COUNTERCLOCKWISE until it stops. Tighten the screw and return to step 1 to verify operation.

Cylinder Door Strike Adjustment

The door strike must have sufficient tension to hold the loading door closed against the force of a tumbling load. Proper adjustment is when 8 to 15 pounds (35.6 N – 66.7 N) of pull is required to open the door.

To adjust, open the door, loosen the jamnut, and turn the door strike screw in or out as required. Retighten the jamnut when finished.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, disconnect power to the tumbler before performing this operation.

Proper tension is when the belt can be depressed approximately 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) by applying light thumb pressure at a point midway between the sheave and motor pulley. The upper belt (Poly V-belt) is self-adjusting and requires no adjustment.

1. Remove the guard from the rear of the tumbler.

2. To adjust belt tension, loosen the adjusting bolt holding the idler housing assembly to the housing support.

3. To tighten the V-belt: Loosen the lower nut on the adjusting bolt, turn the bolt up until the belt has proper tension, then tighten the upper and lower nut.

4. To loosen the V-belt: Loosen the top nut on the adjusting bolt, turn the bolt down until the belt has proper tension, then tighten the upper and lower nut.

5. Replace the guard on the rear of the tumbler. The guard MUST be installed after adjustment is made.

1. Make certain the drying cycle has ended.

2. Open the loading door.

3. Unlock and remove the lint panel.

4. Remove accumulated lint in the lint compartment. Lint left in the compartment will be drawn back onto the lint screen and restrict air circulation.

5. Clean lint from the lint screen. If the lint screen is torn, replace it immediately. A torn screen allows lint to flow into the ductwork, restricting air circulation.

6. Ensure the lint screen covers the entire opening in the lint screen hood. Gaps will allow lint to flow into the ductwork.

7. Wipe any accumulated lint off the thermostat sensing probe. Lint buildup on the probe will cause overheating of the tumbler.

8. Replace and securely lock the lint panel.

1. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

2. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

3. Remove the exhaust duct from the rear of the tumbler and clean out all accumulated lint.

4. Reinstall the exhaust duct.

5. Remove the bottom cover from the vertical exhaust duct and clean out all accumulated lint.

6. Reinstall the vertical exhaust duct cover.

7. Inspect the entire duct work assembly and clean out all accumulated lint.

8. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Clean accumulated lint and other debris from the front and back motor air vents.

5. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve in the gas supply line (gas models only). The handle should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

6. Remove the screws holding the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

7. Inspect belts for wear and proper tension (refer to the Adjustments section).

8. Reinstall the rear drive guard to the back of the tumbler.

9. Energize the electrical circuit to the tumbler by turning on the electrical disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

10. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

Additionally, check the following:

• Clean air vents on the drive motor.

• Clean exhaust ducts.

• Check the flow of combustion air.

• Check the flow of ventilation air.

• Check belt tension.

1. Deactivate the electrical circuit by turning off the disconnect switch on the rear of the tumbler.

2. Perform daily cleaning of accumulated lint.

3. Perform monthly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

4. Perform quarterly inspection and cleaning of accumulated lint.

5. Remove or open all panels and check accessible bolts, nuts, screws, terminals, and fittings for tightness.

6. Shut off the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be at a 90° angle to the gas supply line when in the “OFF” position.

7. Unlock and open the service panel and inspect gas connections for evidence of leakage or loose connections. NOTE: Spraying a mild solution of soap and water on joints will cause bubbles to appear on any leaking connections.

8. Close and securely lock the service panel.

9. Open the electrical junction box cover and inspect all electrical and grounding connections for security. Tighten any loose electrical connections.

10. Close the electrical junction box cover and energize the electrical circuit by turning on the electrical disconnect switch.

11. Turn on the gas supply at the manual gas shut-off valve. The handle should be parallel with the gas supply line when in the “ON” position.

1. Turn off the electrical supply external to the machine.

2. Turn off the electrical disconnect on the machine.

3. Turn off the gas supply external to the machine.

4. Turn off the manual gas shut-off valve on the machine.

5. Turn off the steam supply external to the machine.

6. Remove all electric, gas, and steam connections.
