The OMEGA HH501AJK is a portable 3½ digit, compact-sized digital thermometer designed to use an external K-type or J-type thermocouple as a temperature sensor. It also has a feature that allows the sensor offset to be adjusted in the field. An SMP type connector is provided at the top of the unit to plug in the thermocouple.

Please observe the following safety information:

WARNING: To avoid electrical shock, do not use this instrument when voltages at the measurement surface exceed 24V AC or DC.

WARNING: To avoid damage or burns, do not make temperature measurements in microwave ovens.

CAUTION: Repeated sharp flexing can break the thermocouple leads. To prolong lead life, avoid sharp bends in the leads, especially near the connector.

WARNING: To avoid possible electrical shock, disconnect the thermocouple connectors from the thermometer before removing the cover for maintenance.

The packing list includes:

1. HH501AJK handheld thermometer with protective boot.

2. Teflon insulated beaded wire thermocouple.

3. 9 volt battery.

Temperature Scale: Celsius or Fahrenheit user-selectable.

Measurement Range:

K-Type: -100°C to 1372°C, (-150°F to 1999°F)

J-Type: -100°C to 1200°C, (-150°F to 1999°F)

Resolution: 1 degree or 0.1 degree from -59.9 to 199.9 degree C or F (autoranging).

Accuracy: Accuracy is specified for operating temperatures over the range of 18°C to 28°C (64°F to 82°F), for 1 year, not including thermocouple error.

Temperature Coefficient: 0.1 times the applicable accuracy specification per °C from 0°C to 18°C and 28°C to 50°C (32°F to 64°F and 82°F to 122°F).

Reading Rate: 2.5 times per second.

Input Connector: Accepts standard miniature thermocouple connectors (flat blades spaced 7.9mm, center to center). (SMP type)

GENERAL

Display: 3½ digit liquid crystal display (LCD) with maximum reading of 1999.

Overload: “-OL” is displayed.

Battery: Standard 9V battery (NEDA 1604, IEC 6F22 006P).

Battery Life: 200 hours typical with carbon zinc battery.

Auto Power Off: Approximately 20 minutes.

Supplied Wire: 3 feet type “K” beaded wire thermocouple teflon insulated. Maximum insulation temperature 200°C (392°F). Wire accuracy ±2.2°C or ±0.75% of reading (whichever is greater) from 0°C to 800°C.

Press the “Power” button to turn the thermometer on or off.

When the thermometer is turned on, it is set to the temperature scale that was in use when it was last turned off. To change the temperature scale, press the “°C/°F” button.

Press the “*” button to trigger the Back-Light on. Pressing the “*” button again will make the Back-Light lighter. Press the “*” button a third time to cancel the Back-Light function.

The sequence is: Back-Light on -> lighter -> Back-Light off.

Press the “HOLD” button to enter the Data Hold mode. The “HOLD” annunciator will be displayed at the higher-center of the display. When HOLD mode is selected, the thermometer holds the present readings and stops all further measurements.

To cancel HOLD mode and resume taking measurements, press the “HOLD” button again.

Selecting Thermocouple Type:

Press the “TYPE” button to select the type of thermocouple, either “K” or “J”. Ensure the proper type has been selected for your probe.

Managing Auto Power Off (APO):

Press and hold down the “APO” button for 2 seconds to toggle the APO (Automatic Power Off) mode on or off. The APO annunciator will appear or disappear on the display to indicate its status. When enabled, the power will automatically turn off if there is no operation for a period of time.

1. Press the “MIN MAX” button to enter the MIN MAX recording mode. This mode displays the Maximum reading, the Minimum reading, and the “MAX-MIN” reading stored in record mode.

2. Press the “MIN MAX” button to cycle through the MAX, MIN, and MAX-MIN readings.

3. In this mode, you can press the “HOLD” button to stop recording. All values will be frozen. Press “HOLD” again to restart recording.

4. To exit the MIN/MAX mode and erase the recorded readings, press and hold down the “MIN MAX” button for 2 seconds. This prevents accidental loss of data.

Note: While in MIN/MAX mode, the APO function and other buttons are disabled, with the exception of the “HOLD” and “*” buttons.

Follow these steps to adjust the thermocouple offset:

1. Insert the thermocouple into a known temperature (e.g., ice point at 0°C or boiling water at 100°C) until the display reading is stable.

2. Press the “up arrow” or “down arrow” buttons to add or subtract from the value until it matches the known temperature.

3. The offset can be adjusted by ±6°F (±3°C) from the default. If you cannot adjust your thermocouple to the correct reading, please check your thermocouple or send the meter to be calibrated.

4. Press the “ENTER” button to confirm the new offset.

The OMEGA HH501AJK will not enter the calibration procedure if the battery is low (LOWBAT condition).

1. Make the COM & ADJ pins short and then turn on the meter.

2. The procedure is as follows:

– Supply 35°C (K type) from a calibrator. The LCD should display nearly 35°C. Press the backlit button. The LCD will display “00.1”.

– Press the backlit button again. Supply 1300°C (K-type) from the calibrator. The LCD should display nearly 1300°C.

– Press the backlit button. The meter will turn OFF automatically, indicating that calibration is complete.

3. Take off the short pin when the calibration is completed. Temperature measurement is now workable.

The “battery” symbol appears on the LCD display when replacement is needed.

1. Power is supplied by a 9 volt “transistor” battery (NEDA 1604, IEC 6F22).

2. To replace the battery, remove the screw from the back of the meter and lift off the battery cover.

3. Remove the old battery from the battery contacts and replace it with a new one.

Storage:

When not in use for a long time, remove the battery. Do not store the device in a place with high temperature or high humidity.

Cleaning:

Periodically wipe the case with a damp cloth and detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents.
