Please observe the following important safety instructions when using your HAIER BD-388A Chest Freezer:

• This appliance is designed for domestic use. If used for professional or commercial purposes, adhere to the standards applicable to the respective trade.

• If you are replacing an old appliance, it is essential to destroy any existing latch or bolt locks on the old appliance before disposal to prevent children from locking themselves in.

• Ensure the old appliance is ecologically disposed of by a company specialized in environmental protection, as the coolant may contain harmful components.

• After installation, the power plug should be easily accessible.

• If the power cable is damaged, it must be replaced with an approved cable provided by a manufacturer or a service agent.

• WARNING: Keep ventilation openings, in the appliance enclosure or in the built-in structure, clear of obstruction.

• WARNING: Do not use mechanical devices or other means to accelerate the defrosting process other than those recommended by the manufacturer.

• WARNING: Do not damage the refrigerant circuit.

• WARNING: Do not use electrical appliances inside the food storage compartment of the appliance, unless they are of the type recommended by the manufacturer.

• The refrigerant is easily inflammable. The refrigerant circuit is hermetically sealed. Any improper intervention can cause a fire hazard. Avoid any mechanical influence on the cooling system parts, especially the rear wall condenser, compressor, capillary tube, and drying filter. Interventions must be carried out by authorized personnel only.

• IMPORTANT: Escaping refrigerant can injure your eyes. In case of eye contact with refrigerant, wash your eyes instantly under plenty of running water and consult an eye specialist immediately.

For proper installation of your HAIER BD-388A Chest Freezer, please follow these guidelines:

1. **Choice of Position:** Place your appliance in a cool, well-aired, dry room. Strictly avoid high ambient temperatures and direct sunlight. Installing it near a heat source like a heating unit or oven is highly inappropriate and will increase power consumption.

2. **Distances from Heat Sources:** If installation near a heat source is unavoidable, use a suitable insulation plate (not asbestos) and observe these minimum distances:

• From a gas or electric cooker: 3 cm

• From a radiator or oven: 5 cm

• From a wall, piece of furniture, or another appliance: 2 cm

3. **Ventilation:** Never obstruct the ventilation grille. If your freezer has a ventilation grille, it can be placed directly against a wall, but not with the side with the grille blocked. For freezers without a ventilation grille, leave sufficient space between the rear of the appliance and the wall for warm air to escape.

4. **Leveling:** The appliance must be placed horizontally on a level base to ensure an unimpeded refrigerant circuit and optimum function.

5. **Stabilization Time:** IMPORTANT! Leave the appliance to stand in its final position for at least 2 hours before switching it on. This allows the refrigerant circuit to stabilize and prevents operating problems.

6. **Initial Cleaning:** Thoroughly clean the interior compartment with a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar to remove the typical new appliance odor. Do not use washing liquids, sharp or granular cleaning implements, or any cleaning products containing soda. Ensure the inner area, especially the corners, is absolutely dry before connecting the appliance.

Your HAIER BD-388A must be connected to a power socket with a grounded connection, which conforms to the respective standards and has been installed by an authorized specialist. Before you plug the appliance in, make absolutely sure that the voltage (V) on the appliance’s data-plate corresponds with that of your mains power supply. If the voltage differs, notify the after-sales service or your dealer immediately and do not connect the appliance.

The temperature control (Thermostat) switches the appliance on and off and sets the cooling temperature. The control is intentionally resistant to turning to prevent accidental changes; use a coin or screwdriver to vary the setting.

The compressor stops when the control panel is on position “0” or “OFF” (not all models have this function).

The temperature is factory preset for satisfactory food storage. However, you can adjust it between:

• Min. / minimum number (slight cooling)

• Max. / maximum number (lowest temperature)

Temperature settings should be adjusted according to:

• Ambient temperature of the appliance

• Quantity of stored foodstuff

• Frequency of opening

A medium setting is recommended. You will soon learn which is the most suitable setting for your requirements.

The indicator lights on your HAIER BD-388A provide information about its operational status. The following always applies:

• **green = CONTROL:** The appliance is under current and operating. The green control light must always be on when the appliance is connected and switched on. This is important because, in a power failure, the other lights stop operating and no longer provide a warning.

• **red = ALARM:** The interior temperature is too high. The red light may go on during the first start-up, after defrosting, or when filling the freezer with fresh food. This is normal, and it will go off automatically when the temperature reaches approximately -15°C. If this happens, switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (if equipped). If the red light stays on for more than 12 to 24 hours, there may be a serious problem.

• **yellow = SUPER FREEZE SWITCH is on:** The thermostat function is disabled. The compressor will continue cooling until the SUPER FREEZE switch is turned off.

Follow these steps for the initial start-up of your HAIER BD-388A:

1. Fully unpack the appliance.

2. Remove the polystyrene parts in the compressor chamber (if supplied).

3. Remove documents and any accessories from inside the appliance.

4. Clean the interior with a mixture of lukewarm water and vinegar, and dry thoroughly with a cloth.

5. Close the appliance.

6. Insert the plug in the socket.

7. Switch on the appliance by turning the temperature control to the right. For the time being, turn the controller fully to the right to the Max position (the green and red lights will go on).

8. If equipped with a SUPER FREEZE SWITCH, turn it on (the yellow light will also go on).

9. Do not open the appliance for about 4 hours, or as long as the red light is on, to allow the interior temperature to drop to the necessary level.

10. You can now fill the appliance with deep frozen food (purchased ready-frozen goods).

11. Turn off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH after 24 hours at the latest.

12. If you wish to freeze fresh, unfrozen food, proceed as per the instructions for “Freezing/storage of fresh food”.

Almost all fresh products are suitable for freezing. Pack fresh products in portions suitable for your household. Label the fresh products clearly, as they are not easy to identify when frozen in transparent bags. Use commercially available labels for frozen foods.

Label the portions with at least the following information:

• Product name (e.g., beef fillet)

• Weight of portion

• Quantity (total of pieces)

• Freezing date

• Use by date (consumption date)

Then continue as follows:

a) Place fresh foods in the pre-freezing compartment at the side or on the bottom of the freezer, which is the coldest part. Avoid putting fresh food in direct contact with already deep-frozen food.

b) Within 24 hours, only fill in quantities of fresh food suitable for the freezing capacity of your appliance (see information on the rating plate: XX kg/24h).

c) If available, switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH. This is not absolutely necessary when filling with already frozen items.

d) After 24 hours, move the newly deep-frozen goods from the bottom or pre-freeze shelf to a hanging basket, making the space available for more fresh food.

e) Turn off the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (the yellow light goes off).

f) Set the temperature control according to the appliance’s filling capacity.

g) Keep the temperature in the storage shelf under control, preferably by placing a thermometer with a scale up to -26°C. The storage temperature must always be at least -18°C.

Refilling of fresh food (not frozen)

Make sure that you refill fresh food in quantities adequate to the freezing capacity (XXkg/24h) at the earliest 24 hours after the previous filling. Do not exceed the maximum stacking height.

To ensure correct storage of frozen food in your HAIER BD-388A, never fill the storage shelf up to the edge. Always allow space between the lid and the frozen foods.

Set the temperature control strictly according to the filling capacity. To save energy when operating in normal ambient temperatures (+18 to +22°C), we recommend the following settings for the temperature control:

• Whenever cleaning or defrosting, remove the power plug.

• After closing the freezer lid, do not open it immediately and do not force it open. A vacuum is created which will release after 1 to 2 minutes, allowing the lid to be opened normally.

• To prevent condensation and ice forming, allow cooked food to cool down to ambient temperature before storage.

• Leave the freezer lid open as briefly as possible to avoid wasting energy and excessive ice formation.

• If the red indicator-light goes on unexpectedly, do not open the lid and take appropriate measures immediately.

• Do not use a screwdriver or other metal objects to remove ice. The interior walls are delicate. Use only plastic or wooden scrapers.

• Do not store bottles containing liquids. Liquid expands when frozen and can cause the bottle to explode.

• Never keep containers with explosive substances (like gas lighters, petrol, ether) in the freezer.

• Deep-frozen ice cream and ice lollies should be eaten only a few minutes after being taken from the appliance to avoid injury to lips and tongue (danger of skin detachment).

• Avoid touching the inner walls with wet hands.

For external appearance, you can clean the freezer with furniture polish or other enamel protecting product. Never use these on the inside. Clean the seal with warm water now and again without using any cleaning product.

If your appliance has a condenser in the rear, from time to time remove dirt and dust with a light brush or duster. Dust and dirt impede heat release and increase energy consumption.

If you leave your appliance out of use for an extended period (e.g., holidays), leave it open to prevent odors from building up. For appliances with locks, when the chest lid is open, set the lock to the “closed” position and keep the key away from small children.

Ice and frost layers act as insulation and must be removed from time to time. To remove ice, use a plastic or wood scraper without sharp edges. Cover frozen food with a cloth to aid in collecting the scraped ice.

Under normal conditions (3 to 4 openings per day), the freezer should be defrosted once or twice a year. Never use electrical appliances like hair dryers or devices with a naked flame (e.g., candles) to defrost.

Proceed as follows:

1. Provide a suitable non-metallic container (e.g., plastic container or wash-basket).

2. Make absolutely sure that you remove the plug from the power socket.

3. Dry your hands thoroughly to prevent skin damage from contact with ice (use gloves).

4. Remove all frozen food from the freezer, roll it firmly in newspaper, place it in the container, and put the container in a cool, dry room.

5. Cover the container all around with a thick blanket.

6. Lift the divider (if equipped) upwards out of the guide rail.

7. Use the divider (if provided) as a defrosting dish and push it under the freezer where the defrosting water drain-plug is located.

8. Pull the drain-plug (if provided) out of the freezer bottom.

9. Scrape the thickest ice carefully from the inside and put it in the kitchen sink to melt.

10. If necessary, speed up defrosting by placing a large pot of warm (not too hot) water on the freezer bottom.

11. For freezers without a drain-plug, continuously wipe up the water with a sponge.

12. Thoroughly clean the inside. Rinse with a mixture of warm water and vinegar, then rinse with clear water.

13. Wipe the freezer with an absorbent cloth and allow it to air for about 3 to 4 minutes.

14. Replace the drain-plug (if provided).

15. Empty the defrosting water dish (if provided) and slide it back as a divider.

16. Close the chest and plug it back into the socket.

17. Set the temperature control to the maximum setting (green and red lamps go on) and switch on the SUPER FREEZE SWITCH (if provided) (yellow lamp also lights up).

18. Now refill the frozen food, placing the oldest items at the top. Carry out steps 1 to 17 within a maximum of two hours to prevent food from defrosting.

19. When the red lamp goes off, reset the temperature control as per the filling capacity.

20. Switch off the SUPER FREEZER SWITCH (if provided) after about 8 to 12 hours, or at the latest after 24 hours (the yellow light will go off).

In the event of a power failure, the insulation of the appliance walls provides 10 to 12 hours of storage time. If a problem takes longer to eliminate, the frozen food will begin to defrost. Take prompt action to eliminate the problem or, if necessary, move the frozen food to another freezer.

Check the following possible causes/remedies:

• **Is the plug in good condition and properly plugged into the socket?**

• **Is the socket under current?** Test it by connecting a small appliance like a hand-mixer.

If your HAIER BD-388A is experiencing cooling issues, check these possible causes and remedies:

• **Appliance Stand Time:** Did you let the appliance stand for at least 2 hours before switching it on to allow the refrigerant circuit to stabilize? If not, unplug the appliance, lift it for a moment, and put it back down. After 2 hours, plug it back in. Do not open the chest for this period and for a further 12 hours, or until the red light goes off.

• **Lid Seal:** The lid may not be closing properly, or the seal is not pressing firmly. Test by placing a piece of writing paper between the seal and the chest edge and closing the lid. It should be difficult to pull the paper out from any side. If you can pull the paper out without resistance, notify your after-sales service.

• **Ice Formation:** Heavy ice formation on the inner walls can impede cooling. Defrost the appliance as per the “Cleaning and maintenance” instructions.

• **Heat Source Exposure:** The appliance might be exposed to direct sunlight or installed near a heat source (oven, radiator). Protect it from direct sunlight and check the distance from the heat source.

• **Overfilling:** The amount of food added may exceed the freezer’s capacity (see rating plate: XXkg/24h), or you may have added food that was too warm.

The storage time for purchased deep-frozen products depends on the product type and packaging; always observe the producer’s instructions. For fresh food you freeze yourself, use the following table as a guide.
