The instrument panel of your GMC TERRAIN 2021 includes various controls for operating the vehicle. Here is an overview:

The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter for your GMC TERRAIN 2021 has several functions:

Q (Lock): Press to lock all doors. The turn signal indicators may flash and/or the horn may sound on the second press to indicate locking. This may also arm the theft-deterrent system.

K (Unlock): Press to unlock the driver door. Press again within five seconds to unlock all doors. Pressing Unlock will disarm the theft-deterrent system. If equipped, press and hold to remotely open all of the windows, if enabled.

/ (Remote Vehicle Start): If equipped, press and release Q and then immediately press and hold / for at least four seconds to start the engine from outside the vehicle.

7 (Vehicle Locator/Panic Alarm): Press and release once to flash the exterior lamps and chirp the horn three times. Press and hold for three seconds to sound the panic alarm.

b (Liftgate): Press twice quickly to open or close the liftgate. Press once to stop the liftgate from moving.

With the Keyless Access system, you can lock and unlock the doors and access the liftgate without removing the RKE transmitter from your pocket or purse. The transmitter must be within 1 m (3 ft) of the door or liftgate being opened.

Unlocking/Locking from the Driver Door:

When the doors are locked and the RKE transmitter is within range, pressing the button on the driver door handle will unlock the driver door. Pressing it again within five seconds unlocks all passenger doors.

Pressing the button will cause all doors to lock if:

• It has been more than five seconds since the first press.

• Two presses were used to unlock all doors.

• Any vehicle door has been opened and all doors are now closed.

Unlocking/Locking from Passenger Doors:

When doors are locked and the transmitter is within range of a passenger door handle, pressing the button on that handle will unlock all doors. Pressing it again will lock all doors.

Keyless Liftgate Opening:

Press the touch pad on the liftgate handle to open it, provided the RKE transmitter is within 1 m (3 ft).

To replace the battery in your RKE transmitter, follow these steps:

1. Press the button on the side of the RKE transmitter to pull out the key.

2. Insert a flat, thin object in the center of the transmitter to separate and remove the back cover.

3. Lift the old battery out with a flat object.

4. Remove the battery.

5. Insert the new battery (CR2032 or equivalent), with the positive side facing the back cover.

6. Push the two halves of the transmitter together.

7. Reinsert the key.

If your GMC TERRAIN 2021 is equipped with remote start, you can start the engine from outside the vehicle.

Starting the Engine Using Remote Start:

1. Press and release the Q (Lock) button on the RKE transmitter.

2. Immediately press and hold the / (Remote Start) button for at least four seconds or until the turn signal lamps flash.

3. The parking lamps will turn on and remain on while the engine is running. The doors will be locked.

4. The engine will shut off after 15 minutes unless the ignition is turned on or a time extension is performed.

Extending Engine Run Time:

Repeat steps 1 and 2 while the engine is running to extend the run time for another 15 minutes. An extension can only be done once per remote start cycle.

Canceling a Remote Start:

To shut off the engine, press and hold the / button until the parking lamps turn off, or turn the ignition on and then off.

The remote start will not work if a transmitter is in the vehicle, the vehicle is on, the hood is not closed, the hazard flashers are on, or there is an emission control system malfunction, among other conditions.

If your GMC TERRAIN 2021 has a power liftgate, you can operate it in several ways. The vehicle must be in P (Park). The power liftgate switch is on the driver door and has three modes: MAX (maximum height), 3/4 (reduced height), and OFF (manual only).

To power open or close the liftgate:

• Select MAX or 3/4 mode on the switch.

• Press the b button on the RKE transmitter twice quickly.

• Press the 8 button on the driver door.

• Press the touch pad on the bottom of the liftgate after unlocking all doors.

• Press the l button on the bottom of the liftgate (next to the pull cup) to close it.

Pressing any liftgate button while it is moving will stop it. Pressing a button again will restart the operation in the reverse direction.

Setting the 3/4 Mode Height:

1. Select MAX or 3/4 mode and power open the liftgate.

2. Stop the liftgate movement at the desired height by pressing any liftgate switch. Manually adjust if needed.

3. Press and hold the l button on the bottom of the liftgate until the turn signals flash and a beep sounds. This indicates the new height is set.

Hands-Free Operation (If Equipped):

With the RKE transmitter within 1 m (3 ft) of the rear bumper, use a straight kicking motion under the rear bumper (between the left exhaust pipe and license plate) and pull your foot back. The taillamps will flash and a chime will sound before the liftgate starts moving.

Adjusting the seats properly is crucial for comfort and safety in your GMC TERRAIN 2021.

Manual Seat Adjustment:

• Seat Position: Pull the handle at the front of the seat cushion to unlock it, move the seat forward or rearward, and release the handle. Try to move the seat to ensure it is locked.

• Seat Height: Move the lever on the side of the seat up or down to raise or lower the seat.

Saving Memory Positions:

1. Turn the vehicle on or to ACC/ACCESSORY.

2. Adjust the driver seat and power mirrors to the desired positions.

3. Press and release the SET button on the driver door; a beep will sound.

4. Immediately press and hold the memory button 1 or 2 until two beeps sound. This saves the current positions to that button.

Recalling Memory Positions:

• Manually: Press and hold button 1, 2, or B until the saved position is reached.

• Automatically (Seat Entry Memory): If enabled in Vehicle Personalization, the saved positions for RKE transmitter 1 or 2 are automatically recalled when the vehicle is turned on.

• Automatically (Seat Exit Memory): If enabled, the position saved to B is automatically recalled when the vehicle is turned off and the driver door is opened.

The buttons for the heated and ventilated seats in your GMC TERRAIN 2021 are located on the center console. The engine must be running to operate them.

• I or + (Heated Seatback Only): Press to heat only the driver or passenger seatback.

• J or z (Heated Cushion and Seatback): Press to heat both the cushion and seatback for the driver or passenger.

• C or { (Ventilated Seats): Press to ventilate the driver or passenger seat. A fan pulls air through the cushion and seatback. The air is not cooled.

For any of these features, press the button once for the highest setting (three indicator lights). Each subsequent press will lower the setting until it turns off. The heated or ventilated seats can also be turned on automatically during a remote start if enabled in the vehicle personalization menu.

Either side of the rear seatback can be folded for more cargo space. Always fold the seatback when the vehicle is not moving.

To fold the seatback from the rear seat:

1. Pull the handle on top of the seatback to unlock it. A tab near the lever will raise when it’s unlocked.

2. Fold the seatback forward.

3. Stow the seat belt in the belt stowage clip.

If equipped, the rear seatbacks can also be folded forward by pulling the levers located on the passenger side of the rear cargo area.

To raise the seatback:

1. Ensure the seat belt is in the stowage clip.

2. Lift the seatback up and push it rearward to lock it in place. The tab near the lever will retract.

3. Push and pull on the top of the seatback to ensure it is securely locked.

For maximum protection, it is important for all occupants to wear their seat belts properly.

• Sit up straight and keep your feet on the floor.

• Wear the lap part of the belt low and snug across the hips, just touching the thighs. This directs crash forces to the strong pelvic bones.

• Wear the shoulder belt over the shoulder and across the chest. These parts of the body are best able to take restraining forces.

• Never wear the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back.

• Never allow the belt to become loose or twisted.

• Never route the lap or shoulder belt over an armrest.

The LATCH system in your GMC TERRAIN 2021 secures a child restraint using lower anchors and top tether anchors.

1. Attach and tighten the lower attachments.

1.1. Find the lower anchors for the desired seating position. They are marked with the LATCH symbol (j).

1.2. Place the child restraint on the seat.

1.3. Attach and tighten the lower attachments on the child restraint to the vehicle’s lower anchors. Follow the child restraint manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Attach and tighten the top tether (for forward-facing restraints).

2.1. Find the top tether anchor on the back of the rear seatback. It is marked with the top tether symbol (I).

2.2. Route, attach, and tighten the top tether according to your child restraint’s instructions, ensuring the tether is not twisted.

3. Check the installation. Before placing a child in the restraint, grasp it at the LATCH path and attempt to move it side to side and back and forth. There should be no more than 2.5 cm (1 in) of movement for a proper installation.

The wiper/washer lever is located on the right side of the steering column.

Windshield Wipers:

Move the lever to select a speed:

• HI: Fast wipes

• LO: Slow wipes

• INT: Intermittent wipes. Turn the band on the lever up for more frequent wipes or down for less frequent wipes.

• OFF: Turns wipers off.

• 1X: For a single wipe, briefly move the lever down.

Windshield Washer:

Pull the lever toward you to spray washer fluid on the windshield.

Rear Window Wiper/Washer:

Turn the end of the lever to operate the rear wiper:

• ON: Slow wipes

• INT: Intermittent wipes

• OFF: Turns system off

Push the lever forward to spray washer fluid on the rear window.

If your GMC TERRAIN 2021 is equipped with wireless charging, you can charge a Qi-compatible smartphone. The charging pocket is located outside the armrest of the center console. The vehicle must be on, in ACC/ACCESSORY, or in Retained Accessory Power (RAP).

To charge a compatible smartphone:

1. Remove all objects from the charging pocket.

2. With the smartphone screen facing the rear of the vehicle, slowly insert the smartphone into the charging pocket until the $ symbol appears on the infotainment display. This indicates the phone is properly positioned and charging.

If the charging symbol does not appear:

1. Remove the smartphone from the pocket and wait three seconds.

2. Turn the smartphone 180 degrees and insert it back into the pocket with the screen facing the rear of the vehicle.

Note: A thick smartphone case may prevent the charger from working or may reduce performance.

The Driver Information Center (DIC) displays are shown in the center of the instrument cluster. The controls are on the right steering wheel control.

• w or x: Press to move up or down in a list.

• o or p: Press to move between interactive display zones or cluster applications.

• V: Press to open a menu or select an item. Press and hold to reset values on certain screens.

You can access different menus such as Trip/Fuel, Vehicle Information, and ECO Drive Assist. Within these menus, you can view information like speed, fuel range, oil life, tire pressure, and fuel economy trends. You can also change settings for units (Metric/US) and speed warnings through the Options menu.

The climate control system in your GMC TERRAIN 2021 allows you to control the heating, cooling, and ventilation.

For systems without Dual Automatic Control:

• 9 (Fan Control): Turn the knob to increase or decrease fan speed. Press to turn the fan off.

• TEMP: Turn the knob to increase or decrease the temperature.

• Air Delivery Mode (Y, \, [, -): Press the buttons to direct airflow to the instrument panel, floor, windshield, or a combination.

• A/C: Press to turn the air conditioning on or off.

• @ (Recirculation): Press to recirculate inside air, which helps cool the vehicle more quickly.

• 0 (Defrost): Press to clear the windshield of fog or frost more quickly.

For Dual Automatic Climate Control System:

Press AUTO for automatic operation. Set the driver and passenger temperatures using their respective knobs. The system will automatically control fan speed, air delivery, A/C, and recirculation to reach and maintain the selected temperatures. You can override any of these settings by manually adjusting them, which will cancel full automatic operation.

The passenger compartment air filter is located behind the glove box. Follow these steps to replace it:

1. Open the glove box.

2. Disconnect the glove box door damper from the glove box door assembly by squeezing the pivot to release the damper ring.

3. Squeeze both sides of the glove box bin inward to lower it beyond the stops.

4. Remove the two screws securing the filter service door.

5. Press the latches on either side of the service door inward to release. Open the service door and remove the old filter.

6. Install the new air filter.

7. Close the service door completely.

8. Reverse the steps to reinstall the glove box.

Your GMC TERRAIN 2021 does not require an elaborate break-in period. However, following these guidelines for the first few hundred kilometers will help its long-term performance:

• For the first 800 km (500 mi):

– Do not drive at any one constant speed, either fast or slow.

– Do not make full-throttle starts.

– Avoid downshifting to brake or slow the vehicle.

• For the first 300 km (200 mi):

– Avoid making hard stops. This allows the new brake linings to break in properly and prevents premature wear.

After the break-in period, engine speed and load can be gradually increased.

The Driver Mode Control allows you to adjust the vehicle’s performance for different driving conditions. Rotate the knob on the center console to select a mode.

Available modes may include:

• q Tour Mode: For normal driving conditions. This is the most fuel-efficient mode. For AWD vehicles, this mode puts the vehicle in Front-Wheel Drive (FWD).

• 4 AWD Mode (If Equipped): Provides drive torque to all four wheels to improve traction on slippery surfaces.

• 7 Off-Road Mode (If Equipped): For public off-road recreational driving.

• _ Tow/Haul Mode (If Equipped): Changes transmission shift patterns and turns on AWD to assist when towing or hauling a heavy load.

The cruise control buttons are on the steering wheel.

To set a speed:

1. Press the 5 button to turn the system on. A white indicator will appear in the instrument cluster.

2. Accelerate to the desired speed.

3. Press and release the –SET button. The indicator in the cluster will turn green.

4. Remove your foot from the accelerator pedal.

Adjusting Speed:

• To resume the set speed after braking, press +RES.

• To increase speed, press and hold +RES or tap it to increase speed in small increments.

• To decrease speed, press and hold –SET or tap it to decrease speed in small increments.

To cancel cruise control:

• Lightly step on the brake pedal.

• Press the * button. This disengages cruise control but saves the set speed in memory.

• Press the 5 button to turn the system off completely and erase the set speed.

If equipped, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) allows you to set a cruise speed and a following gap time from a vehicle detected ahead. ACC uses a front camera sensor to detect vehicles in your path.

• J (On/Off): Press to turn the ACC system on or off.

• SET– : Press to set the speed or decrease the speed.

• RES+ : Press to resume the set speed or increase the speed.

• [ (Gap Setting): Press to select the following gap of Far, Medium, or Near.

• * : Press to disengage ACC without erasing the set speed. Press and hold to switch between ACC and regular cruise control.

When a vehicle is detected ahead, ACC will automatically adjust your speed to maintain the selected following gap, using limited braking if necessary. If no vehicle is detected, ACC will maintain your set speed like regular cruise control.

To get an accurate reading, check the engine oil when the engine is cold and the vehicle is on level ground.

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface. For the most accurate reading, wait at least two hours after the engine has been turned off.

2. If you can’t wait two hours, the engine must be off for at least 15 minutes if warm, or 30 minutes if not warm.

3. Open the hood and locate the engine oil dipstick handle (a loop).

4. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a clean paper towel or cloth.

5. Push the dipstick back in all the way.

6. Remove it again, keeping the tip down, and check the oil level.

If the oil is below the cross-hatched area at the tip of the dipstick, add 1 L (1 qt) of the recommended oil (full synthetic SAE 0W-20 dexos1 approved) and then recheck the level.

The Engine Oil Life System should be reset to 100% after every oil change. There are two ways to do this:

Method 1: Using DIC Controls

1. Display the REMAINING OIL LIFE on the Driver Information Center (DIC) menu.

2. Press and hold the V button for several seconds while the Oil Life display is active.

3. The display will show REMAINING OIL LIFE 100% when the reset is complete.

Method 2: Using the Accelerator Pedal

1. Place the ignition in Service Mode (with the vehicle off and brake pedal not applied, press and hold ENGINE START/STOP for more than five seconds).

2. Display REMAINING OIL LIFE on the DIC menu.

3. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal three times within five seconds.

4. The display will change to 100% when the system is reset.

If you have a flat tire, follow these steps safely:

1. Prepare the Vehicle:

– Park on a level surface, well off the road.

– Set the parking brake firmly.

– Put the transmission in P (Park).

– Turn off the engine.

2. Access Tools and Spare Tire:

– Open the liftgate and access the tools and compact spare tire under the rear cargo floor.

3. Loosen Wheel Nuts:

– Use the wheel wrench to turn all the wheel nuts on the flat tire counterclockwise to loosen them, but do not remove them yet.

4. Position the Jack:

– Place the jack at the designated jack location nearest the flat tire. The location is indicated by a notch in the vertical bottom edge of the body side sheet metal.

5. Raise the Vehicle:

– Attach the wrench to the jack and turn it clockwise to raise the vehicle until the flat tire is clear of the ground.

6. Change the Tire:

– Remove the wheel nuts.

– Remove the flat tire.

– Remove any rust or dirt from the wheel mounting surfaces.

– Place the compact spare tire on the wheel-mounting surface.

– Reinstall the wheel nuts and tighten them by hand until the wheel is held against the hub.

7. Lower the Vehicle:

– Lower the vehicle by turning the jack handle counterclockwise.

– Tighten the wheel nuts firmly in a crisscross sequence with the wheel wrench.

– Lower the jack all the way and remove it.

– Do a final tightening of the wheel nuts with the wrench.

Have the wheel nuts tightened to the proper torque specification with a torque wrench as soon as possible.

If your GMC TERRAIN 2021 is equipped with a tire sealant and compressor kit instead of a spare tire, follow these steps to temporarily seal a puncture:

1. Remove the kit from its storage location.

2. Unwind the power plug and the sealant/air hose.

3. Slide the base of the tire sealant canister into the slot on top of the compressor to hold it upright.

4. Remove the valve stem cap from the flat tire.

5. Attach the sealant/air hose from the kit to the tire valve stem by turning it clockwise until tight.

6. Plug the power plug into the vehicle’s accessory power outlet.

7. Start the vehicle engine.

8. Press the on/off button on the compressor to turn it on. The compressor will inject both sealant and air into the tire.

9. Inflate the tire to the recommended pressure shown on the Tire and Loading Information label (located on the driver’s side door frame).

10. Turn the compressor off. If the recommended pressure cannot be reached in about 25 minutes, the tire is too severely damaged.

11. Disconnect the hose, unplug the kit, and immediately drive the vehicle 8 km (5 mi) to distribute the sealant.

12. Stop and check the tire pressure again. Re-inflate if necessary.

After using the kit, the tire should be professionally repaired or replaced as soon as possible.

If the battery in your GMC TERRAIN 2021 has run down, you can use jumper cables and another vehicle to start it.

1. Position the two vehicles so they are not touching.

2. Turn off the ignition and all lights and accessories in both vehicles.

3. Open the hoods and locate the battery and jump start terminals. On your GMC TERRAIN 2021, the positive (+) jump start terminal is in the engine compartment on the driver side under a cover, and the negative (-) grounding stud is to the left of the windshield washer fluid reservoir.

4. Connect one end of the red positive (+) cable to the positive (+) terminal on the discharged battery.

5. Connect the other end of the red positive (+) cable to the positive (+) terminal of the good battery.

6. Connect one end of the black negative (–) cable to the negative (–) terminal of the good battery.

7. Connect the other end of the black negative (–) cable to the negative (–) grounding stud for the discharged battery.

8. Start the engine in the vehicle with the good battery and let it run for at least four minutes.

9. Try to start the vehicle that had the dead battery.

Jumper Cable Removal:

Reverse the sequence exactly when removing the jumper cables. After starting the disabled vehicle and removing the cables, allow it to idle for several minutes.
