How do I set up my DELONGHI ECAM22.11X for the first time?
Follow these steps to set up your DELONGHI ECAM22.11X for its first use:
1. Remove the water tank (A9), fill to the MAX line with fresh water, then put it back in the appliance.
2. Place a container with a minimum capacity of 100 ml under the cappuccino maker (A18).
3. Plug the appliance into the mains socket and place the main switch (A8) on the back of the appliance in the I position.
4. The steam light (B7) will flash on the control panel.
5. Turn the steam dial (A19) to the I position. Water is delivered from the cappuccino maker, then the appliance goes off.
6. Turn the steam dial to the 0 position.
The DELONGHI ECAM22.11X is now ready for normal use. Please note that for the first time you use the coffee maker, you need to make 4-5 cups of coffee or cappuccinos before it starts to give satisfactory results. You should also customize the water hardness as soon as possible.
How do I turn the DELONGHI ECAM22.11X on and off?
Turning On:
1. Make sure the main switch (A8) on the back of the appliance is in the I position.
2. Press the ON/OFF button (B2). The coffee cup lights will flash while the appliance heats up and performs an automatic rinse cycle. This cycle cannot be interrupted.
3. The appliance is ready when the coffee cup lights go off and the other coffee lights come on steadily.
Turning Off:
1. Press the ON/OFF button (B2). The appliance performs a rinse cycle and then goes off.
Important: During rinsing, a little hot water flows from the coffee spouts. Avoid contact with splashes of water. If the appliance is not used for an extended period, place the main switch (A8) in the 0 position.

The Energy Saving mode reduces energy consumption. When active, the green ECO light is on.
1. With the appliance off and the main switch (A8) in the I position, press and hold the steam button (B7) until the ECO light comes on.
2. To disable the mode, press the button for 1 short coffee (B3). The ECO light will flash.
3. To re-enable the mode, press the button for 1 short coffee (B3) again. The ECO light will come on steadily.

How do I install the water softener filter on my DELONGHI ECAM22.11X?
Follow these steps to install the water softener filter (C4):
1. Take the filter out of its packet and rinse under about 0.5 litre of running water.
2. Turn the date indicator disk until the next two months of use are displayed.
3. Extract the water tank (A9) from the appliance and fill it with water.
4. Insert the filter in the water tank and immerse it completely, sloping it to enable air bubbles to escape.
5. Insert the filter into the filter housing and press as far as it will go.
6. Close the tank with the lid, then replace the tank in the machine.
7. Place a container with a minimum capacity of 500 ml under the cappuccino maker (A18).
8. Turn the steam dial (A19) to the I position to deliver hot water.
9. Deliver at least 500 ml of hot water, then turn the hot water/steam dial back to the 0 position.
The filter is now active. If the warning lights come on during installation, repeat the procedure from step 8.
How do I make coffee with the DELONGHI ECAM22.11X?
Using Coffee Beans:
1. Fill the beans container (A7) with coffee beans. Do not use caramelised or candied coffee beans.
2. Turn the coffee taste selection dial (B6) to set the required strength. Turn it clockwise for stronger coffee. The dial position between MIN and MAX adjusts the quantity of beans the machine will grind.
3. Place one or two cups under the coffee spouts (A12). Lower the spouts as near as possible to the cup for a creamier coffee.
4. Press the button corresponding to the required coffee (1 short, 2 short, 1 long, or 2 long coffees).
5. Preparation begins. The light corresponding to the selected button flashes. Once the coffee has been made, the appliance is ready for the next drink.
Using Pre-Ground Coffee:
1. Make sure the appliance is on.
2. Turn the coffee taste selection dial (B6) anticlockwise as far as it will go to the pre-ground coffee position (spoon symbol).
3. Make sure the funnel is not blocked, then add one level measure (C2) of pre-ground coffee. Never use more than one level measure.
4. Place a cup under the coffee spouts (A12).
5. Press the corresponding 1 cup coffee button (B3 or B8). You can only make one cup of coffee at a time with pre-ground coffee.
6. Preparation begins.
How can I adjust the settings for my coffee on the DELONGHI ECAM22.11X?
Adjusting the Coffee Mill (Grind Coarseness):
The grinding adjustment dial (A2) must only be turned when the coffee mill is in operation.
• If coffee is delivered too slowly or a drop at a time, turn one click clockwise towards “7”.
• For a fuller-bodied, creamier coffee, turn one click anticlockwise towards “1”. Do not turn more than one click at a time.
These adjustments will only be evident after at least 2 cups of coffee have been delivered.
Selecting the Quantity of Coffee in the Cup (Programming Volume):
1. Press the coffee button you want to program (e.g., 1 short coffee B3) and hold it down until its light flashes and the appliance starts delivering coffee.
2. Release the button.
3. When the coffee in the cup reaches the desired level, press the same button again to memorize the new amount.
The machine is now reprogrammed with the new quantity for that specific button.
Setting the Temperature:
1. With the appliance off and the main switch in the I position, press and hold the 1 short coffee button (B3) until the control panel lights come on.
2. Press the 1 short coffee button (B3) again to select the required temperature (LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH, MAX). The lights will indicate the selection.
3. Press the 1 long coffee button (B8) to confirm the selection. The lights go off.
How do I make a cappuccino with the DELONGHI ECAM22.11X?
Danger of burns! During preparation, steam is given off. Take care to avoid scalds.
1. Prepare an espresso in a large cup as described previously.
2. Fill a container with about 100 ml of milk for each cappuccino. For a richer, denser froth, use skimmed or partially skimmed milk at refrigerator temperature (about 5°C).
3. Press the steam button (B7). The steam light flashes.
4. Immerse the cappuccino maker (A18) in the milk container.
5. After a few seconds, when the steam light stops flashing and stays lit, turn the steam dial (A19) to the I position. Steam is delivered from the cappuccino maker, frothing the milk.
6. For a creamier froth, rotate the container with slow movements in an upward direction. Do not deliver steam for more than 3 minutes at a time.
7. When you have obtained the required froth, stop steam delivery by turning the steam dial back to the 0 position.
8. Add the milk froth to the coffee prepared previously. The cappuccino is ready. Sweeten to taste and, if desired, sprinkle the froth with a little cocoa powder.
How should I clean the cappuccino maker on my DELONGHI ECAM22.11X after use?
Always clean the cappuccino maker (A18) after use to avoid the build-up of milk residues and prevent clogging.
1. Place a container under the cappuccino maker and deliver a little water for a few seconds by rotating the steam dial (A19) to the I position. Then turn the steam dial to the 0 position to stop the flow of hot water.
2. Wait a few minutes for the cappuccino maker to cool down. Grip the handle of the cappuccino maker tube firmly in one hand and with the other rotate the cappuccino maker anti-clockwise, then remove by pulling downwards.
3. Also remove the steam connection nozzle by pulling it downwards.
4. Make sure the two holes on the nozzle are not blocked. If necessary, clean using a toothpick.
5. Wash all parts of the cappuccino maker thoroughly with a sponge and warm water.
6. Reinsert the nozzle, then replace the cappuccino maker on the nozzle, turning it and pushing it upwards until it is attached.
How do I clean the various components of my DELONGHI ECAM22.11X?
Important: Do not use solvents, abrasive detergents, or alcohol. None of the components can be washed in a dishwasher. Do not use metal objects to remove encrustations.
• Coffee Grounds Container (A13): When the light flashes, the machine must be on. Remove the drip tray, empty the grounds container, clean it thoroughly, and replace. When removing the drip tray, the grounds container must always be emptied, even if it contains few grounds.
• Drip Tray (A17) and Condensate Tray (A14): The drip tray has a level indicator (A16). Before this red indicator protrudes, empty and clean the drip tray and the condensate tray behind it.
• Inside of the Machine: Turn the machine off and unplug it. Check weekly that the inside is not dirty. Remove coffee deposits with a sponge and residue with a vacuum cleaner.
• Water Tank (A9): Clean the tank about once a month with a damp cloth and mild washing-up liquid.
• Coffee Spouts (A12): Clean with a sponge or cloth. Check the holes are not blocked and remove deposits with a toothpick if necessary.
• Pre-ground Coffee Funnel (A6): Check monthly that it is not blocked. Remove deposits with a brush.
• Infuser (A11): Clean at least once a month.
1. Turn the machine off correctly and remove the water tank.
2. Open the infuser door (A10).
3. Press the two coloured release buttons inwards and pull the infuser outwards.
4. Soak the infuser in water for about 5 minutes, then rinse under the tap. Do not use washing up liquid.
5. Clean coffee residues from the support inside the machine.
6. After cleaning, replace the infuser by sliding it onto the internal support and pushing the PUSH symbol until it clicks into place.
How do I descale my DELONGHI ECAM22.11X?
Descale the appliance when the descale light (B5) flashes. Use only De’Longhi descaler. Hot water containing acid flows from the spouts during this process, so take care to avoid splashes.
1. Turn the appliance on.
2. Empty the drip tray (A17) and grounds container (A13) and put them back.
3. Empty the water tank (A9) and remove the water softener filter (if present).
4. Pour the descaler into the tank up to level A (100 ml), then add a litre of water up to level B. Put the tank back.
5. Place a container with a minimum capacity of 1.8 litres under the cappuccino maker (A18) and coffee spouts (A12).
6. Wait for the coffee lights to come on steadily.
7. Press and hold the descale button (B5) for at least 5 seconds. The light in the button comes on steadily to indicate the program has begun.
8. The steam light flashes. Turn the hot water/steam dial (A19) to the I position. The descaling program starts.
9. After about 25 minutes, descaling stops. The water tank light and steam light flash. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the 0 position.
10. The appliance is now ready for rinsing. Empty the container used to collect the descaler solution. Extract the water tank, rinse it under running water, and fill with fresh water to the MAX level. Put it back in the appliance. The water tank light flashes.
11. Place the empty container under the cappuccino maker and coffee spouts.
12. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the I position to begin rinsing.
13. When the water tank is empty, the water tank light and steam light flash. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the 0 position.
14. Empty the container. Remove the water tank, replace the water softener filter (if you use one), fill the tank to MAX with cold water, and insert it back into the appliance. The steam light flashes.
15. Place the empty container under the cappuccino maker.
16. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the I position. Rinsing continues.
17. When it finishes, the steam light flashes. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the 0 position.
18. Top up the water tank with fresh water to the MAX level and put it back. Descaling is complete.
How do I measure and set the water hardness on my DELONGHI ECAM22.11X?
Measuring Water Hardness:
1. Remove the “TOTAL HARDNESS TEST” indicator paper (C1) from its pack.
2. Immerse the paper completely in a glass of water for one second.
3. Remove the paper from the water and shake lightly. After about a minute, 1, 2, 3, or 4 red squares will form, corresponding to Level 1, 2, 3, or 4 hardness.
Setting Water Hardness:
1. Make sure the appliance is off (but connected to mains and the main switch is in the I position).
2. Press and hold the descale button (B5) for at least 5 seconds. The ECO, water tank, grounds, and warning lights come on together.
3. Press the 1 short coffee button (B3) to set the measured water hardness level. The lights displayed will correspond to the selected level.
