Please adhere to the following fundamental safety warnings when using your DELONGHI ECAM21.11X:

• The appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction.

• Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.

• Designated use: this appliance is designed and made to prepare coffee and milk based beverages and hot water. Any other use is considered improper and thus dangerous.

• The surface of the heating element remains hot after use and the outside of the appliance may retain the heat for several minutes depending on use.

• To clean, follow the instructions in the section “14. Cleaning”.

• Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be made by children without supervision.

• Never clean by immersing the appliance in water.

• CAUTION: To prevent damage to the appliance do not use alkaline cleaning agents when cleaning, use a soft cloth and a mild detergent.

• This is a household appliance only. It is not intended to be used in: staff kitchen areas in shops, offices and other working environments; farm houses; by clients in hotels, motels and other residential type environments; bed and breakfast type environments.

• If the plug or cord is damaged, it must be replaced by Customer Services only to avoid all risk.

• For appliances with a removable cord: avoid splashes of water on the power cord connector or socket at the back of the appliance.

• WARNING: For models with glass surfaces, do not use the appliance if the surface is cracked.

It is vital to follow these warnings for the safe operation of your DELONGHI ECAM21.11X:

Danger of electric shock!

• This is an electrical appliance and may cause electric shock.

• Never touch the appliance with damp hands or feet.

• Never touch the plug with damp hands.

• Make sure the socket used is freely accessible at all times, enabling the appliance to be unplugged when necessary.

• Unplug directly from the plug only. Never pull the cord as you could damage it.

• To disconnect the appliance completely you must unplug it from the mains socket.

• If the appliance is faulty, do not attempt to repair. Turn it off, unplug from the mains socket and contact Customer Services.

• Before cleaning the appliance, turn it off, unplug from the mains socket and allow to cool.

Danger of burns!

• This appliance produces hot water and steam may form while it is in operation.

• Avoid contact with splashes of water or hot steam.

• When the appliance is in operation, the cup shelf could become very hot.

• Surfaces marked with the three wavy lines symbol become hot during use (the symbol is present in certain models only).

Follow these steps to set up your DELONGHI ECAM21.11X:

1. Remove the water tank (A9), fill to the MAX line with fresh water, then put it back in the appliance.

2. Place a container with a minimum capacity of 100 ml under the cappuccino maker (A18).

3. Plug the appliance into the mains socket and place the main switch (A8) on the back of the appliance in the I position.

4. The steam light flashes on the control panel (B7).

5. Turn the steam dial (A19) to the I position. Water is delivered from the cappuccino maker, then the appliance goes off.

6. Turn the steam dial to the 0 position.

The coffee machine is now ready for normal use. Please note that the first time you use the coffee maker, you need to make 4-5 cups of coffee or 4-5 cappuccinos before it starts to give satisfactory results.

Turning On:

1. Before turning the appliance on, make sure the main switch (A8) on the back is in the I position.

2. Press the ON/OFF button (B2). The coffee lights will flash while the appliance is heating up and performing an automatic rinse cycle. During rinsing, a little hot water comes out of the coffee spouts. Avoid contact with splashes of water.

3. Once the rinse cycle is complete, the coffee lights stop flashing and remain on steadily. The appliance is now ready for use.

Turning Off:

1. Press the ON/OFF button (B2). The appliance performs an automatic rinse cycle then goes off.

Please note: If the appliance is not used for an extended period, place the main switch (A8) in the 0 position.

You can change the time your DELONGHI ECAM21.11X switches off after being idle. The options are 15 or 30 minutes, or 1, 2, or 3 hours. To change the setting:

1. With the appliance off and the main switch (A8) in the I position, press the “2 long coffees” button (B9) and hold it down until the lights on the control panel come on.

2. Press the “1 short coffee” button (B3) until the lights corresponding to your desired delay time come on:

• 15 minutes: ECO light

• 30 minutes: ECO and water tank lights

• 1 hour: ECO, water tank, and grounds container lights

• 2 hours: ECO, water tank, grounds container, and general alarm lights

• 3 hours: ECO, water tank, grounds container, general alarm, and steam lights

3. Press the “1 long coffee” button (B8) to confirm the selection. The lights go off.

Energy saving mode is active when the green ECO light is on. To enable or disable this function:

1. With the appliance off and the main switch (A8) in the I position, press the steam button (B7) and hold it down until the ECO light comes on.

2. To disable the mode, press the “1 short coffee” button (on the left of the dial). The ECO light flashes.

3. To re-enable the mode, press the “1 short coffee” button again. The ECO light comes on steadily.

4. Press the “1 long coffee” button (on the right of the dial) to confirm the selection. The ECO light goes off.

To install the water softener filter (C4) on your DELONGHI ECAM21.11X, follow these steps:

1. Take the filter out of its packet and rinse under about 0.5 litre of running water.

2. Turn the date indicator disk until the next two months of use are displayed.

3. Extract the water tank (A9) from the appliance and fill it with water.

4. Insert the filter in the water tank and immerse it completely, sloping it to enable air bubbles to escape.

5. Insert the filter into the filter housing and press as far as it will go.

6. Close the tank with the lid, then replace the tank in the machine.

7. Place a container with a minimum capacity of 500 ml under the cappuccino maker (A18).

8. Turn the steam dial (A19) to the I position to deliver hot water.

9. Deliver at least 500 ml of hot water, then turn the hot water/steam dial back to the 0 position.

The filter is now active. If the general alarm and water tank lights come on during installation, repeat the procedure from step 8.

To make coffee using fresh beans with your DELONGHI ECAM21.11X:

1. Fill the beans container (A7) with coffee beans. Do not use caramelised or candied coffee beans.

2. Select the coffee taste by turning the selection dial (B6). Turn it clockwise for a stronger coffee.

3. Adjust the coffee mill (grinder) if necessary. The grinding adjustment dial (A2) must only be turned when the coffee mill is in operation. Turn clockwise for a coarser grind (faster delivery) or anticlockwise for a finer grind (fuller body). These adjustments will be evident after at least 2 cups of coffee.

4. Place one or two cups under the coffee spouts (A12). Lower the spouts as near as possible to the cup for a creamier coffee.

5. Press the button for your desired coffee:

• 1 short coffee (B3)

• 2 short coffees (B4)

• 1 long coffee (B8)

• 2 long coffees (B9)

6. Preparation begins. The light of the selected button flashes. Once the coffee has been made, the appliance is ready for the next drink.

To increase the quantity of coffee in the cup, press one of the coffee icons again within 3 seconds of the initial delivery finishing.

To use pre-ground coffee with your DELONGHI ECAM21.11X:

1. Make sure the appliance is on.

2. Turn the coffee taste selection dial (B6) anticlockwise as far as it will go to the spoon symbol position.

3. Make sure the pre-ground coffee funnel (A6) is not blocked, then add one level measure (C2) of pre-ground coffee. Never use more than one level measure.

4. Place a cup under the coffee spouts (A12).

5. Press the corresponding 1 cup coffee button (B3 for short coffee or B8 for long coffee).

6. Preparation begins.

Important: You can only make one cup of coffee at a time using pre-ground coffee. Never add pre-ground coffee when the machine is off, and do not add coffee beans to the pre-ground coffee funnel.

Follow these steps to prepare a cappuccino with your DELONGHI ECAM21.11X:

1. First, prepare the coffee in a large cup as described in the coffee making instructions.

2. Fill a container with about 100 ml of milk for each cappuccino. For a richer, denser froth, use skimmed or partially skimmed milk at refrigerator temperature (about 5°C).

3. Press the steam button (B7). The light in the button flashes.

4. Immerse the cappuccino maker (A18) in the milk container.

5. After a few seconds, when the steam light stops flashing and remains on steadily, turn the steam dial (A19) to the I position. Steam is delivered from the cappuccino maker.

6. For a creamier froth, rotate the container with slow movements in an upward direction. Do not deliver steam for more than 3 minutes at a time.

7. When you have obtained the required froth, stop steam delivery by turning the steam dial back to the 0 position. Danger of burns: Stop steam delivery before removing the container to avoid burns from splashes of boiling milk.

8. Add the milk froth to the coffee prepared previously. The cappuccino is ready. Sweeten to taste and, if desired, sprinkle the froth with a little cocoa powder.

Always clean the cappuccino maker (A18) after use to avoid the build-up of milk residues and prevent clogging.

1. Place a container under the cappuccino maker and deliver a little water for a few seconds by rotating the steam dial (A19) to the I position. Then turn the steam dial to the 0 position to stop the flow of hot water.

2. Wait a few minutes for the cappuccino maker to cool down.

3. Grip the handle of the cappuccino maker tube firmly in one hand and with the other rotate the cappuccino maker anti-clockwise, then remove by pulling downwards.

4. Also remove the steam connection nozzle by pulling it downwards.

5. Make sure the two holes on the steam nozzle are not blocked. If necessary, clean using a toothpick.

6. Wash all parts of the cappuccino maker thoroughly with a sponge and warm water.

7. Reinsert the nozzle, then replace the cappuccino maker on the nozzle, turning it and pushing it upwards until it is attached.

Regular cleaning is essential for your DELONGHI ECAM21.11X. Important: Do not use solvents, abrasive detergents, or alcohol. Do not use metal objects to remove coffee deposits. None of the components can be washed in a dishwasher.

• Coffee Grounds Container (A13): When the “grounds container full” light flashes, you must empty and clean the container. With the machine on, remove the drip tray, empty the grounds container, and clean it thoroughly. Always empty the container when removing the drip tray, even if it’s not full.

• Drip Tray (A17) and Condensate Tray (A14): The drip tray has a red level indicator (A16). Empty and clean the drip tray before this indicator protrudes from the cup tray. Remove the drip tray and grounds container, empty them, wash them, and check/empty the condensate tray.

• Inside of the Coffee Machine: About once a week, turn the machine off, unplug it, remove the drip tray, and check that the inside is not dirty. If necessary, remove coffee deposits with a sponge and the residues with a vacuum cleaner.

• Water Tank (A9): Clean the water tank regularly (about once a month) with a damp cloth and a little mild washing up liquid. If you have a water filter, remove it and rinse it with running water before replacing it.

• Coffee Spouts (A12): Clean the coffee spouts with a sponge or cloth. Check that the holes are not blocked and, if necessary, remove coffee deposits with a toothpick.

• Pre-ground Coffee Funnel (A6): Check regularly (about once a month) that the funnel is not blocked. If necessary, remove coffee deposits.

The infuser (A11) must be cleaned at least once a month. The infuser cannot be extracted when the machine is on.

1. Make sure the machine is correctly turned off (press the ON/OFF button) and unplugged.

2. Remove the water tank (A9).

3. Open the infuser door (A10) on the right side of the appliance.

4. Press the two coloured release buttons inwards and at the same time pull the infuser outwards.

5. Soak the infuser in water for about 5 minutes, then rinse under the tap. Do not use washing up liquid as it could be damaged.

6. Clean coffee residues from the support where the infuser rests.

7. After cleaning, replace the infuser by sliding it onto the internal support, then push the PUSH symbol until it clicks into place.

8. Once inserted, make sure the two coloured buttons have snapped out.

9. Close the infuser door and put the water tank back.

Descale the appliance when the descale light flashes. Use only De’Longhi descaler. Important: Hot water containing acid flows from the spouts during descaling. Avoid contact with splashes of this solution.

1. Turn the appliance on and wait until it is ready for use.

2. Empty the drip tray (A17) and grounds container (A13) and put them back in the machine.

3. Empty the water tank (A9) completely and remove the water softener filter (C4), if present.

4. Pour the descaler (C3) into the tank up to level A (100 ml), then add a litre of water up to level B. Put the water tank back.

5. Place a container with a minimum capacity of 1.8 litres under the cappuccino maker (A18) and coffee spouts (A12).

6. Wait for the coffee lights to come on steadily.

7. Press and hold the rinse/descale button (B5) for at least 5 seconds to begin the descaling procedure. The light in the button comes on steadily.

8. The steam light flashes. Turn the hot water/steam dial (A19) to the I position. The descale programme starts, and descaler liquid comes out of the spouts.

9. After about 25 minutes, descaling stops. The water tank empty light and steam light flash. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the 0 position.

10. The machine is now ready for rinsing. Empty the container used to collect the descaler solution. Extract the water tank, empty, rinse under running water, fill with fresh water up to the MAX level, and put it back. The water tank empty light flashes.

11. Place the empty container under the spouts.

12. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the I position to begin rinsing.

13. When the water tank is empty, the water tank empty light and steam light flash. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the 0 position.

14. Empty the rinsing container. Remove the water tank, replace the water softener filter (if you use one), fill the tank to the MAX level with cold water, and insert it back into the appliance. The steam light flashes.

15. Place the empty container under the cappuccino maker.

16. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the I position. Rinsing continues from the cappuccino maker only.

17. When rinsing finishes, the steam light flashes. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the 0 position.

18. Top up the water tank with fresh water to the MAX level and put it back. Descaling is complete.

The machine is set by default for a hardness value of 4. You can program it according to your local water hardness to reduce how often descaling is required.

Measuring Water Hardness:

1. Remove the “TOTAL HARDNESS TEST” indicator paper (C1) from its pack.

2. Immerse the paper completely in a glass of water for one second.

3. Remove the paper from the water and shake lightly. After about a minute, 1, 2, 3, or 4 red squares will form, corresponding to the hardness level.

Setting Water Hardness:

1. Make sure the appliance is off (but connected to mains power with the main switch in the I position).

2. Press and hold the rinse/descale button (B5) for at least 5 seconds. The ECO, water tank, grounds container, and general alarm lights come on together.

3. Press the “1 short coffee” button (B3) to set the actual water hardness measured by the indicator paper:

• Level 1: ECO light

• Level 2: ECO and water tank lights

• Level 3: ECO, water tank, and grounds container lights

• Level 4: ECO, water tank, grounds container, and general alarm lights

4. Press the “1 long coffee” button (B8) to confirm the selection. The machine is now reprogrammed.
