Follow these steps to set up your DELONGHI ECAM21.11X:

1. Remove the water tank (A9), fill to the MAX line with fresh water, then put it back in the appliance.

3. Extract the water tank (A9) from the appliance and fill it with water.

4. Insert the filter in the water tank and immerse it completely, sloping it to enable air bubbles to escape.

5. Insert the filter into the filter housing and press as far as it will go.

6. Close the tank with the lid, then replace the tank in the machine.

7. Place a container with a minimum capacity of 500 ml under the cappuccino maker (A18).

How do I make coffee using coffee beans with the DELONGHI ECAM21.11X?

To make coffee using fresh beans with your DELONGHI ECAM21.11X:

1. Fill the beans container (A7) with coffee beans. Do not use caramelised or candied coffee beans.

2. Select the coffee taste by turning the selection dial (B6). Turn it clockwise for a stronger coffee.

3. Adjust the coffee mill (grinder) if necessary. The grinding adjustment dial (A2) must only be turned when the coffee mill is in operation. Turn clockwise for a coarser grind (faster delivery) or anticlockwise for a finer grind (fuller body). These adjustments will be evident after at least 2 cups of coffee.

4. Place one or two cups under the coffee spouts (A12). Lower the spouts as near as possible to the cup for a creamier coffee.

• 2 short coffees (B4)

• 1 long coffee (B8)

6. Preparation begins. The light of the selected button flashes. Once the coffee has been made, the appliance is ready for the next drink.

To increase the quantity of coffee in the cup, press one of the coffee icons again within 3 seconds of the initial delivery finishing.

1. First, prepare the coffee in a large cup as described in the coffee making instructions.

2. Fill a container with about 100 ml of milk for each cappuccino. For a richer, denser froth, use skimmed or partially skimmed milk at refrigerator temperature (about 5°C).

3. Press the steam button (B7). The light in the button flashes.

4. Immerse the cappuccino maker (A18) in the milk container.

5. After a few seconds, when the steam light stops flashing and remains on steadily, turn the steam dial (A19) to the I position. Steam is delivered from the cappuccino maker.

6. For a creamier froth, rotate the container with slow movements in an upward direction. Do not deliver steam for more than 3 minutes at a time.

7. When you have obtained the required froth, stop steam delivery by turning the steam dial back to the 0 position. Danger of burns: Stop steam delivery before removing the container to avoid burns from splashes of boiling milk.

8. Add the milk froth to the coffee prepared previously. The cappuccino is ready. Sweeten to taste and, if desired, sprinkle the froth with a little cocoa powder.


How should I clean the cappuccino maker on the DELONGHI ECAM21.11X after use?

Always clean the cappuccino maker (A18) after use to avoid the build-up of milk residues and prevent clogging.

1. Place a container under the cappuccino maker and deliver a little water for a few seconds by rotating the steam dial (A19) to the I position. Then turn the steam dial to the 0 position to stop the flow of hot water.

2. Wait a few minutes for the cappuccino maker to cool down.

3. Grip the handle of the cappuccino maker tube firmly in one hand and with the other rotate the cappuccino maker anti-clockwise, then remove by pulling downwards.

4. Also remove the steam connection nozzle by pulling it downwards.

5. Make sure the two holes on the steam nozzle are not blocked. If necessary, clean using a toothpick.

6. Wash all parts of the cappuccino maker thoroughly with a sponge and warm water.

7. Reinsert the nozzle, then replace the cappuccino maker on the nozzle, turning it and pushing it upwards until it is attached.


How do I clean the various components of my DELONGHI ECAM21.11X?

Regular cleaning is essential for your DELONGHI ECAM21.11X. Important: Do not use solvents, abrasive detergents, or alcohol. Do not use metal objects to remove coffee deposits. None of the components can be washed in a dishwasher.

Coffee Grounds Container (A13): When the “grounds container full” light flashes, you must empty and clean the container. With the machine on, remove the drip tray, empty the grounds container, and clean it thoroughly. Always empty the container when removing the drip tray, even if it’s not full.

Drip Tray (A17) and Condensate Tray (A14): The drip tray has a red level indicator (A16). Empty and clean the drip tray before this indicator protrudes from the cup tray. Remove the drip tray and grounds container, empty them, wash them, and check/empty the condensate tray.

Inside of the Coffee Machine: About once a week, turn the machine off, unplug it, remove the drip tray, and check that the inside is not dirty. If necessary, remove coffee deposits with a sponge and the residues with a vacuum cleaner.

Water Tank (A9): Clean the water tank regularly (about once a month) with a damp cloth and a little mild washing up liquid. If you have a water filter, remove it and rinse it with running water before replacing it.

Coffee Spouts (A12): Clean the coffee spouts with a sponge or cloth. Check that the holes are not blocked and, if necessary, remove coffee deposits with a toothpick.

Pre-ground Coffee Funnel (A6): Check regularly (about once a month) that the funnel is not blocked. If necessary, remove coffee deposits.


How do I clean the infuser of the DELONGHI ECAM21.11X?

The infuser (A11) must be cleaned at least once a month. The infuser cannot be extracted when the machine is on.

1. Make sure the machine is correctly turned off (press the ON/OFF button) and unplugged.

2. Remove the water tank (A9).

3. Open the infuser door (A10) on the right side of the appliance.

4. Press the two coloured release buttons inwards and at the same time pull the infuser outwards.

5. Soak the infuser in water for about 5 minutes, then rinse under the tap. Do not use washing up liquid as it could be damaged.

6. Clean coffee residues from the support where the infuser rests.

7. After cleaning, replace the infuser by sliding it onto the internal support, then push the PUSH symbol until it clicks into place.

8. Once inserted, make sure the two coloured buttons have snapped out.

9. Close the infuser door and put the water tank back.


How do I descale my DELONGHI ECAM21.11X?

Descale the appliance when the descale light flashes. Use only De’Longhi descaler. Important: Hot water containing acid flows from the spouts during descaling. Avoid contact with splashes of this solution.

1. Turn the appliance on and wait until it is ready for use.

2. Empty the drip tray (A17) and grounds container (A13) and put them back in the machine.

3. Empty the water tank (A9) completely and remove the water softener filter (C4), if present.

4. Pour the descaler (C3) into the tank up to level A (100 ml), then add a litre of water up to level B. Put the water tank back.

5. Place a container with a minimum capacity of 1.8 litres under the cappuccino maker (A18) and coffee spouts (A12).

6. Wait for the coffee lights to come on steadily.

7. Press and hold the rinse/descale button (B5) for at least 5 seconds to begin the descaling procedure. The light in the button comes on steadily.

8. The steam light flashes. Turn the hot water/steam dial (A19) to the I position. The descale programme starts, and descaler liquid comes out of the spouts.

9. After about 25 minutes, descaling stops. The water tank empty light and steam light flash. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the 0 position.

10. The machine is now ready for rinsing. Empty the container used to collect the descaler solution. Extract the water tank, empty, rinse under running water, fill with fresh water up to the MAX level, and put it back. The water tank empty light flashes.

11. Place the empty container under the spouts.

12. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the I position to begin rinsing.

13. When the water tank is empty, the water tank empty light and steam light flash. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the 0 position.

14. Empty the rinsing container. Remove the water tank, replace the water softener filter (if you use one), fill the tank to the MAX level with cold water, and insert it back into the appliance. The steam light flashes.

15. Place the empty container under the cappuccino maker.

16. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the I position. Rinsing continues from the cappuccino maker only.

17. When rinsing finishes, the steam light flashes. Turn the hot water/steam dial to the 0 position.

18. Top up the water tank with fresh water to the MAX level and put it back. Descaling is complete.


How do I measure and set the water hardness on my DELONGHI ECAM21.11X?

The machine is set by default for a hardness value of 4. You can program it according to your local water hardness to reduce how often descaling is required.

Measuring Water Hardness:

1. Remove the “TOTAL HARDNESS TEST” indicator paper (C1) from its pack.

2. Immerse the paper completely in a glass of water for one second.

3. Remove the paper from the water and shake lightly. After about a minute, 1, 2, 3, or 4 red squares will form, corresponding to the hardness level.

Setting Water Hardness:

1. Make sure the appliance is off (but connected to mains power with the main switch in the I position).

2. Press and hold the rinse/descale button (B5) for at least 5 seconds. The ECO, water tank, grounds container, and general alarm lights come on together.

3. Press the “1 short coffee” button (B3) to set the actual water hardness measured by the indicator paper:

• Level 1: ECO light

• Level 2: ECO and water tank lights

• Level 3: ECO, water tank, and grounds container lights

• Level 4: ECO, water tank, grounds container, and general alarm lights

4. Press the “1 long coffee” button (B8) to confirm the selection. The machine is now reprogrammed.


What do the light indicators on my DELONGHI ECAM21.11X mean?

Repeat coffee delivery and turn the grinding adjustment dial (A2) one click clockwise towards “7” while the coffee mill is in operation. If delivery is still too slow, repeat. If the problem persists, deliver some water from the cappuccino maker.
Coffee lights, water tank light, and general alarm light flashing If the water softener filter (C4) is present, an air bubble may have been released inside the circuit, obstructing delivery. Deliver a little water from the cappuccino maker by turning the steam dial (A19) to the I position until the flow is regular.
Selection dial light and general alarm light flashing The “pre-ground coffee” function has been selected without placing any pre-ground coffee in the funnel (A6). Place pre-ground coffee in the funnel or deselect the “pre-ground” function.
Descale light flashing The machine must be descaled. The descaling procedure needs to be performed.
Selection dial light flashing Too much coffee has been used. Select a milder taste or reduce the quantity of pre-ground coffee, then make the coffee again.
Water tank light, selection dial light, and general alarm light flashing The coffee beans have run out. Fill beans container.
Water tank light, selection dial light, and general alarm light flashing The pre-ground coffee funnel (A6) is clogged. Empty the funnel with the help of a brush.

How do I troubleshoot common problems with my DELONGHI ECAM21.11X?

Coffee does not come out of one or both of the spouts. The spouts are blocked. Clean the spouts with a toothpick.
The frothed milk has large bubbles. The milk is not cold enough or is not semi-skimmed. You should ideally use skimmed or semi-skimmed milk at refrigerator temperature (about 5°C). If the result is not as you wished, try changing brand of milk.
The milk is not frothed. Cappuccino maker dirty. Clean as described in the section “12.1. Cleaning the cappuccino maker after use”.
Steam delivery stops. A safety device stops steam delivery after 3 minutes. Wait, and then enable the steam function again.
