To connect the telephone base of your VTECH CS5229, follow these steps:

1. Plug the telephone line cord into the telephone jack on the telephone base and into a telephone wall jack.

2. Plug the power adapter into the power jack on the telephone base and then into an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch.

If you subscribe to a digital subscriber line (DSL) high-speed Internet service through your telephone line, you must install a DSL filter between the telephone line cord and the telephone wall jack. The filter prevents noise and caller ID problems caused by DSL interference.

To install and charge the battery for your VTECH CS5229 handset, follow these steps:

Install the battery:

1. Plug the battery connector securely into the socket inside the handset battery compartment.

2. Place the battery with the label THIS SIDE UP facing up and the wires inside the battery compartment.

3. Align the cover flat against the battery compartment, then slide it upwards until it clicks into place.

Connect the charger:

1. Plug the power adapter for the charger into an electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch.

Charge the battery:

1. Place the handset in the telephone base or charger to charge.

2. For best performance, keep the handset in the telephone base or charger when not in use. The battery is fully charged after 10 hours of continuous charging. It may take up to 16 hours for the battery to be fully charged if you are using it for the first time.

After you install your VTECH CS5229 telephone or power returns following a power outage and battery depletion, the handset will prompt you to set the date and time. For example, if the date is 25 December, 2019, and the time is 10:59 AM:

1. When the handset prompts you to set date and time, press MENU/SELECT.

2. Use the dialing keys (0-9) to enter the month (MM), day (DD), and year (YY). Then press MENU/SELECT.

3. Use the dialing keys (0-9) to enter the hour (HH) and minute (MM). Then press ▲ or ▼ to choose AM or PM.

4. Press MENU/SELECT to save the setting.

The voice guide on your VTECH CS5229 helps you set up the answering system. After setting the date and time, the handset will display “Voice guide to set up Ans sys?”. This feature assists you with the basic setup of the answering system. You can follow the voice guide to record your own announcement, set the number of rings, and set the message alert tone.

1. Press MENU/SELECT to start the voice guide for the answering system setup.

2. You will hear the voice prompt, “Hello! This voice guide will assist you with the basic setup of your answering system.”

3. Set up your answering system by inputting the designated numbers as instructed in the voice guide.

If you accidentally set the LCD language to Spanish or French on your VTECH CS5229, you can reset it back to English. Press MENU then enter 364# to change the handset LCD language back to English while the handset is not in use.

To make a call using your VTECH CS5229 handset:

1. Press TALK or SPEAKER.

2. Enter the telephone number.

To answer an incoming call on your VTECH CS5229, press TALK, SPEAKER, or any dialing key.

To end a call on your VTECH CS5229, press OFF or place the handset back in the telephone base.

During a call on your VTECH CS5229, press SPEAKER to switch between speakerphone and handset earpiece.

To adjust the listening volume on your VTECH CS5229, press ▲ VOLUME or ▼ VOLUME on the side of the handset while on a call.

The directory on your VTECH CS5229 can store up to 50 entries, which are shared by all handsets. Each entry can consist of a telephone number up to 30 digits, and a name up to 15 characters.

To add an entry:

1. Press MENU when the handset is not in use.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to scroll to Directory, then press SELECT.

3. Press SELECT again to choose Add contact.

4. Use the dialing keys to enter the telephone number (up to 30 digits). Press SELECT.

5. Use the dialing keys to enter the name (up to 15 characters). Press SELECT to save.

To review entries in the directory of your VTECH CS5229:

1. Press DIR ▼ when the handset is not in use.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to browse through the entries.

To delete an entry from the directory of your VTECH CS5229:

1. When your desired directory entry is displayed on the handset screen, press DELETE.

2. The handset will show “Delete contact?”. Press SELECT to confirm.

The VTECH CS5229 uses caller ID service, which requires a subscription from your telephone service provider. When you receive a call, the caller’s information is displayed after the first or second ring. The caller ID log can store up to 30 entries. Each entry has up to 24 digits for the phone number and 15 characters for the name.

To review the caller ID log on your VTECH CS5229:

1. Press CID when the handset is not in use.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to browse through the entries.

To save a number from the caller ID log to the directory on your VTECH CS5229:

1. When the desired caller ID entry is displayed on the handset screen, press MENU/SELECT.

If you have subscribed to caller ID service, you can use the call block feature of your VTECH CS5229 to reject certain calls. The call block list can store up to 150 entries.

To add a call block entry:

1. Press MENU when the handset is not in use.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to scroll to Call block, then press SELECT.

3. Press SELECT to choose Block list.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to scroll to Add new entry, then press SELECT.

5. Enter the number you wish to block (up to 30 digits), then press SELECT.

6. Enter the name (up to 15 characters), then press SELECT to save.

To review the entries in your call block list on the VTECH CS5229:

1. Press MENU when the handset is not in use.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to scroll to Call block, then press SELECT.

3. Press SELECT to choose Block list.

4. Press SELECT to choose Review.

5. Press ▲ or ▼ to browse through the block entries.

To delete a call block list entry on your VTECH CS5229:

1. Review the call block list and find the desired entry.

2. When the desired entry displays on the screen, press DELETE.

3. The screen will show “Delete entry?”. Press SELECT to confirm.

To block calls that have no number on your VTECH CS5229:

1. Press MENU when the handset is not in use.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to scroll to Call block, then press SELECT.

3. Press ▲ or ▼ to scroll to Calls w/o num, then press SELECT.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to choose Block, then press SELECT.

Your VTECH CS5229 has a built-in answering system. It can also support voicemail service offered by your telephone service provider. Here are the key differences:

You can turn the answering system of your VTECH CS5229 on or off using the telephone base or a handset.

On the telephone base:

• Press ANS ON to turn the answering system on or off. When it’s on, it announces, “Calls will be answered.” When it’s off, it announces, “Calls will not be answered.”

On a handset:

1. Press MENU when the handset is not in use.

2. Press ▲ or ▼ to scroll to Answering sys, then press SELECT.

3. Press SELECT to choose Answer on/off.

4. Press ▲ or ▼ to choose On or Off, then press SELECT.

You can set the answering system of your VTECH CS5229 to answer an incoming call after 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 rings. You can also select toll saver, which answers after 2 rings when you have new messages, or after 4 rings when there are no new messages.

You can play messages on your VTECH CS5229 using either the telephone base or a handset.

On the telephone base:

• Press PLAY/STOP when the phone is not in use.

On a handset:

1. Press MENU when the handset is not in use.

2. Press SELECT to choose Play messages.

During playback, you have the following options:

• Press ▲ or ▼ to adjust the speaker volume.

• Press 6 to skip to the next message.

• Press 4 to repeat the message currently playing.

• Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords.

Privacy: The same features that make a cordless telephone convenient create some limitations. Telephone calls are transmitted between the telephone base and the cordless handset by radio waves, so there is a possibility that the cordless telephone conversations could be intercepted by radio receiving equipment within range of the cordless handset. For this reason, you should not think of cordless telephone conversations as being as private as those on corded telephones.

Electrical power: The telephone base of this cordless telephone must be connected to a working electrical outlet. The electrical outlet should not be controlled by a wall switch.
