For your safety when using the TOHNICHI DATA TORK CEM3-G, please observe the following warnings and cautions:

Warnings:

1. Use only the official Tohnichi charger and battery. Do not use any other chargers or batteries not designated in the manual.

2. Charge in the appropriate manner:

– Use the charger only with the rated power source to avoid abnormal heat generation or fire.

– Do not charge the battery in temperatures outside of the 0-40 degree Celsius range, as this may cause it to burst or cause a fire.

– Do not wrap the charger or battery with a cloth, etc., as this may cause them to burst or cause a fire.

– When not in use, remove the plug from the power source to prevent electric shock or fire.

3. Pay attention to your workplace conditions:

– Do not use the charger or battery in the rain or other wet conditions to avoid electric shock or damage.

– Keep the workplace brightly lit to prevent accidents.

– Do not use or charge the product where flammable liquid or gas exists to prevent explosion or fire.

4. Use only authorized designated accessories and optional equipment to avoid accidents or injuries.

5. Do not throw the battery into a fire, as it may explode or generate hazardous substances.

6. Do not disassemble or try to modify the product, as it may endanger safety, damage performance, and cause product failure.

7. Make sure to switch the ratchet lever completely in the required direction for QH interchangeable heads to prevent accidents, injuries, or product failure.

8. Do not extend the handle of the torque wrench with a pipe, etc., as it may cause product failure and accuracy error.

9. When using it in high places, take appropriate measures to prevent the product from falling to avoid accidents or injuries.

Cautions:

1. Always keep the workplace clean and uncluttered to prevent accidents.

2. Keep away from children. Do not let young people touch the product or the charger cable.

3. When not in use, store it in a dry, locked place where children cannot reach it.

4. Do not keep the product or battery where the temperature may rise as high as 50 degrees Celsius to avoid damaging battery performance or causing smoke/fire.

5. Do not use the product beyond its capacity. Set the torque within the product’s capacity to prevent accidents or product failure.

6. Choose the product that fits the required operation. Do not use it for purposes other than those specified in the manual.

7. Do not handle the charger cable roughly. Do not carry the tool by the cable, and keep it away from heat, oil, and sharp corners.

8. Keep your posture in a natural and firm position. Maintain your balance.

9. Take good care of the product. Follow instruction manuals for changing accessories. Periodically check the charger cable for damage and keep the handle dry and clean.

10. Before use, check for any damage to parts of the product. Do not use a charger with a damaged plug or cable.

Please follow these notes for proper and safe use of the TOHNICHI DATA TORK CEM3-G:

1. Use only the accompanying charger for charging the battery.

2. Only use the battery designated in this manual.

3. Use the product only within the operating environment specified in this manual.

4. Do not disassemble the product.

5. Check the functions and settings before use.

6. Be careful not to expose the product to water or oil as it may cause malfunction.

7. Do not drop the product or hit it against other objects as it may cause product failures.

8. Do not use the product beyond its capacity specified in this manual.

9. Make sure to conduct daily inspection as well as periodic inspection.

10. Push clear and make sure the display shows zero (zero adjustment) before measuring.

11. For accurate measurement, hold the center of the effective length line and apply force at a right angle against the handle.

12. Connect the torque wrench and the interchangeable head firmly.

If there is a strange smell or fire during usage, stop use immediately. Move the instrument to a safe place and contact Tohnichi.

The TOHNICHI DATA TORK CEM3-G uses a Nickel metal hydrogen battery. To save resources, please make efforts to recycle it. For proper handling and recycling of a used battery, please ask the distributors or a Tohnichi Japan or overseas facility.

The TOHNICHI DATA TORK CEM3-G has the following features:

1. Manages measured value and data: Can trace measured date and time.

2. Dual display: Features both an LED and LCD. The torque value is displayed on a bright, easy-to-see 7-segment LED, while other functions are shown on the LCD.

3. Tightening completion alarm, judgment OK/NG function: Informs of tightening completion with an LED and buzzer. Measured torque is judged as OK/NG.

4. Expanded data capacity: Can save a maximum of 999 data points.

5. Solidity of the display unit: An aluminum case is used to increase solidity.

6. Nickel hydrogen battery: Uses an environment-friendly Nickel hydrogen battery.

7. Extension of continuous usage time: Max 30-hour continuous usage in LCD mode and 20 hours in dual mode. A 1-hour charge provides 8 hours of continuous use in dual mode.

8. Residual battery indicator: A 4-step battery indicator helps to see the remaining battery amount.

9. Less possibility of over-torquing: Designed to prevent over-torquing by adjusting the handle shape and effective length.

10. Former data file system can be used without change: Former communication software can be used with the CEM3-G in M-2 mode.

The main components of the TOHNICHI DATA TORK CEM3-G are:

1. Interchangeable head: Accommodates various Tohnichi heads like SH, RH, QH, RQH, DH, HH, FH. (PH heads cannot be used).

2. Protection cover: Protects the display from scratch and breakage.

3. Liquid crystal display (LCD): Shows clock, remaining battery, counter, auto memory condition, unit, and torque value depending on the mode.

4. 7segment LED display: Shows the torque value in dual mode. It is off in LCD mode.

5. Unit display: Shows the torque unit.

6. Tightening completion, judgment OK/NG LED: Green LED turns on for tightening completion (OK) and red LED turns on for NG.

7. Power button: Switches the power on and off. When power is on, it performs a zero check.

8. Counter send key (▲): Sends the counter forward one by one or continuously to read out measured data. Keep pushing for fast-forward.

9. Counter return key (▼): Reverses the counter one by one or continuously. Keep pushing for fast-forward.

10. Terminal cover: Protects terminals from dust and debris.

11. Mode key (MD): When the counter is 000, push for 2 seconds to enter settings. For counters 001-999, push to process measured data (max, min, ave, etc).

12. Memory key (MEM): Saves the measured data, proceeds to the next counter, and transfers data to an external device.

13. Clear key (C): Clears saved measurement data. In run mode, it performs an auto zero adjustment.

14. Grip: The battery pack (BP-5) is stored inside.

15. Cap: Remove this cap (counter clockwise) when exchanging batteries.

16. Charge jack: Connect the BC-3-G charger here.

17. External output terminal: Connect the USB cable (No. 584) to this terminal.

18. Infrared output window: Terminal to transfer data to the Tohnichi infrared data receiver R-DT999.

19. Reset button: Push if a display error or malfunction occurs. It is not necessary to push this every time after charging.

The TOHNICHI DATA TORK CEM3-G has two main display modes:

Dual display mode (Delivery condition):

– During measurement, the LCD shows the clock, remaining battery, counter, and auto memory status. The 7-segment LED displays the current torque value, and the unit is also shown.

– When reading out memory, the LCD displays the counter number and the time of measurement (T:M:S), along with the battery status. The LED display is not used for time readout.

LCD display mode (Power saving mode):

– In this mode, only the LCD is active. It displays the counter, remaining battery, unit, auto memory status, and the torque value. The 7-segment LED display remains off to save power.

The TOHNICHI DATA TORK CEM3-G has several operational modes:

1. Memory mode:

– M-3 mode: This is the delivery setting. It can save a maximum of 999 data points and the measured time. It is not compatible with Tohnichi data filing software (DFS).

– M-2 mode: This mode is compatible with the older CEM2 model. It can save only 99 data points but is compatible with the Tohnichi data filing software (DFS) used by the CEM2.

2. Display mode:

– Dual mode: This is the delivery setting. It uses both the LCD and LED displays to show torque value, counter, measured time, etc.

– LCD mode (Power saving mode): Only the LCD display is used, and the LED is turned off to save electricity.

3. Measurement mode:

– MODE-M (Inspection mode): This is the delivery condition. It is used for retightening and loosening inspection.

– MODE-T (Tightening mode): This mode is used for tightening operations. When the lower limit torque value is reached, a green LED and alarm turn on.

4. Data sampling mode:

– Run mode: When the counter is at 000 (M-3 mode) or 00 (M-2 mode), the display shows the torque value being applied at the moment and returns to zero when torque is released.

– Peak mode: When the counter is 001-999 (M-3) or 01-99 (M-2), the wrench is in Peak mode. The maximum torque applied will be captured and held on the display.

To perform a simple measurement using the delivery condition settings (Dual display mode):

1. Install the attached interchangeable head QH and a socket (optional).

2. Push the power button. Do not apply force to the socket at this time.

3. The display will show the counter at 000, which is RUN mode. As you apply torque, the value on the LED will increase and return to zero upon release.

4. Push the ▲ key once. The counter will turn to 001, and the wrench is now in PEAK mode.

5. Apply torque. The peak value will be held on the LED display (e.g., 100.0 N.m).

6. Push the MEM key once. You will hear a “PI” sound. The measured value is saved as measurement 001, and the counter advances to 002.

7. To check the saved data, use the ▼ key. To delete data, select the data to delete using the ▲/▼ keys and push the C key.

The TOHNICHI DATA TORK CEM3-G has several other functions in addition to its main modes:

Auto zero function: In RUN mode, push the C key to perform an auto zero adjustment. If the displayed torque is more than 7.5% of the max capacity, the display shows “Err9”.

Error message: The wrench performs a key check and memory check when powered on. It can display various error codes (Err1-Err9) for issues like stuck keys or sensor malfunctions.

Auto memory/reset: Automatically saves the measured data after a set timing. To turn this function off, set the timing to 00.

Judgment function: Set a torque range (upper and lower limits). After measuring, push MEM to give a judgment. A green lamp indicates OK, and a red lamp indicates NG.

Mute function: Set the buzzer alarm to “OFF” to mute the sound on key operation. Note that the alarm sound for over-torquing, tightening completion, and judgment cannot be canceled.

Power saving function: If not used for 1 minute, the 7-segment LED darkens to save power. Touch any key to restore it.

Auto power off function: If not used for 3 minutes, it automatically turns off.

Residual battery indication: A 4-step indicator on the LCD shows the remaining battery level, from full to “LoBATT”.

Over torque alarm: If torque exceeds 105% of max capacity, the display shows the torque value and “- – -” alternately, and the buzzer sounds.

To perform a measurement in Inspection Mode (MODE-M) without OK/NG judgment, follow these steps:

1. Set the counter to a number between 001-999 (for M-3 mode) or 01-99 (for M-2 mode). This puts the wrench in PEAK mode.

2. As you apply torque, the wrench captures the peak value. Note that the peak hold function only works when the torque reaches over 7.5% of the wrench’s max capacity.

3. Push the MEM key to save the peak value and the measured time. The wrench will proceed to the next counter. If Auto memory/reset is set, this step happens automatically. If connected to a PC or printer, the measured data is output at this time.

4. Apply torque for the next counter in the same way.

5. Continue this process for all measurements. If a counter already has old data, it will be renewed when a new torque value exceeding the old one is applied and saved.

To use Inspection Mode (MODE-M) with OK/NG judgment, you first need to set the upper and lower torque limits in the settings menu. For this example, let’s use an Upper limit of 55 Nm and a Lower limit of 50 Nm.

1. Set the counter to a number between 001-999 (M-3 mode) or 01-99 (M-2 mode).

2. Apply torque to capture the peak value. Then push the MEM key to proceed to judgment. (If Auto memory/reset is set, judgment is given automatically after the set timing).

In case of OK judgment (Measured torque is between 50 Nm and 55 Nm):

– The green LED turns on for 0.5 seconds, and the wrench proceeds to the next counter, ready for the next measurement.

In case of NG judgment (Measured torque is below 50 Nm or above 55 Nm):

– The red LED turns on, and the buzzer sounds.

– The wrench does not automatically proceed to the next counter. The Auto memory/reset function does not work for NG results.

– To save the NG data, you must press the MEM key again.

– To delete the NG data, press the C key.

Tightening Mode (MODE-T) informs you when the applied torque reaches a target range. First, set the measurement mode to MODE-T and define the upper and lower torque limits in the settings menu. For this example, let’s use an Upper limit of 55 Nm and a Lower limit of 50 Nm.

1. Set the counter to a number between 001-999 (M-3 mode) or 01-99 (M-2 mode).

2. As you apply torque, when it reaches the lower limit (50 Nm), the buzzer goes off for 0.5 seconds and the green LED turns on. This indicates you have entered the target torque range.

In case of OK judgment:

– Release the torque before it reaches the upper limit (55 Nm). The green LED will stay on.

– Push the MEM key to confirm the judgment. The green LED will flash for 0.5 seconds, the data is saved, and the counter proceeds to the next number.

In case of NG judgment:

– If you continue to apply torque and it exceeds the upper limit (55 Nm), the red LED will turn on, and the buzzer will sound continuously to alarm you that the torque is out of range.

– Push the MEM key to stop the buzzer and give the NG judgment. The data will not be saved automatically.

– To save the NG data, press the MEM key again.

– To delete the NG data, press the C key.

To check the measured data stored in the wrench’s memory, use the counter keys:

– Use the ▲ (Counter send) key to move the counter forward.

– Use the ▼ (Counter return) key to move the counter backward.

Keep the keys pushed to fast-forward or fast-reverse through the data points.

In dual display mode, when you select a data point, the LCD display will show the measured time for 1 second before it switches back to showing the counter number. The corresponding torque value will be shown on the LED display.

In LCD display mode, the measured time will not be shown, only the counter number and the torque value.

To process a selected range of measured data, follow these steps:

1. Use the ▲/▼ keys to select the upper end of the data range you want to calculate (e.g., counter 200). Push the MD key.

2. The display will show “STT” (start). Use the ▲/▼ keys to select the lower end of the data range (e.g., counter 1). Push the MD key.

3. The display now shows “N” and the quantity of data points in the selected range. Push MD to continue.

4. The display shows “MAX” (“HI” in LCD mode) and the maximum torque value in the range. Push MD to continue.

5. The display shows “MIN” (“LO” in LCD mode) and the minimum torque value in the range. Push MD to continue.

6. The display shows “AVE” (“AV” in LCD mode) and the average torque value in the range. Push MD to continue.

7. The wrench returns to the original display.

Note: To cancel this process at any time, press the Clear (C) key. The display will return to normal.

First, ensure the communication settings are correctly configured in the settings menu (e.g., “PC”, “USB”, or “PRN”).

1. Use the ▲/▼ keys to select the upper end of the data range you wish to output (e.g., counter 200). Push the MD key.

2. The display will show “STT” (start). Use the ▲/▼ keys to select the lower end of the data range (e.g., counter 1). Push the MD key.

3. The display will show “N” and the total number of data points to be output. Push the MEM key to start the output to the connected external device.

Note: To cancel the operation, you can push the C key during steps 1 or 2. You cannot cancel once the data is being output.

To transfer data to an R-DT999 Data Tank, first set the communication setting to “IFR” in the settings menu.

1. Use the ▲/▼ keys to select the upper end of the counter range you wish to transfer (e.g., counter 200). Push the MD key.

2. The display will show “STT” (start). Use the ▲/▼ keys to select the lower end of the counter range (e.g., counter 1). Push the MD key.

3. Set the R-DT999 Data Tank to be ready for receiving data. Place its input in line with the CEM3-G’s infrared output window.

4. Push the MEM key on the CEM3-G to start outputting the measured data to the R-DT999.

Note: To cancel the operation, you can push the C key during steps 1 or 2. You cannot cancel once the data is being transferred.

You can delete a single data point or a range of data.

To delete 1 data point:

1. Use the ▲/▼ keys to select the data you want to delete.

2. Push the C key to delete it.

To delete a selected range of data:

1. Use the ▲/▼ keys to select the upper end of the data range you want to delete. Push the MD key.

2. The display will show “STT” (start). Use the ▲/▼ keys to select the lower end of the data range. Push the MD key.

3. The screen will show “N” and the number of data points to be deleted. Push the C key and the MD key at the same time.

4. The screen shows “CLEAR” and blinks. It then returns to the original display, and the deletion is complete.

To enter the settings menu:

1. Set the counter to 000 (in M-3 mode) or 00 (in M-2 mode) using the ▼ key.

2. Push the MD key for 2 seconds until the wrench enters the measurement mode setting screen.

Within the settings menu:

– Use the ▲/▼ keys to change the value or select an option for the current setting.

– Push the MEM key to confirm your selection and proceed to the next setting.

– To save all settings and exit to the measurement mode, push the MD key or power button from the clock display screen.

After entering the settings menu, you can configure the following options in sequence by pressing the MEM key to advance to the next setting:

1. Measurement Mode Setting: Use ▲/▼ to select “MODE-M” (inspection) or “MODE-T” (tightening). Press MEM to confirm.

2. Measurement Unit Setting: Use ▲/▼ to select the torque unit (N·m / kgf·cm / kgf·m / lbf·in / lbf·ft). Press MEM to confirm.

3. Upper Limit Setting: Use ▲/▼ to set the upper limit value for torque judgment. Press MEM to confirm.

4. Lower Limit Setting: Use ▲/▼ to set the lower limit value for torque judgment. Press MEM to confirm.

5. Tightening Direction Setting: Use ▲/▼ to select “CW” (clockwise) or “CCW” (counter-clockwise). Press MEM to confirm.

6. Auto Memory/Reset Setting: Use ▲/▼ to select the time (in seconds) for auto memory. Measured torque is automatically saved after this time. Press MEM to confirm.

7. Buzzer Setting: Use ▲/▼ to select buzzer “ON” or “OFF”. Press MEM to confirm.

8. Communication Mode Setting: Use ▲/▼ to select the mode: HT (Handy Terminal), PC (RS232C), PRN (printer), USB, or IFR (Infrared). Press MEM to confirm.

9. Communication Baud Rate Setting: Use ▲/▼ to select the baud rate (2400, 4800, 9600, 19200 bps). This is skipped if PRN or IFR is selected. Press MEM to confirm.

10. Memory Mode Setting: Use ▲/▼ to select “M-3” (999 data) or “M-2” (99 data, CEM2 compatible). Changing this will delete previous data. Press MEM to confirm.

11. Display Mode Setting: Use ▲/▼ to select “LED” (Dual mode) or “LCD” (LCD only mode). Press MEM to confirm.

12. Setting Default: Use ▲/▼ to select “DFT-Y” to reset all settings to delivery condition or “DFT-N” to not reset. Press MEM to confirm.

13. Clock/Date Setting: After the default setting, you will proceed to the clock and date setting screens (Hour, Minute, Second, Year, Month, Day). Use ▲/▼ to set values and MEM to confirm each one.

To transfer data via USB, follow these steps:

Setting on PC:

1. Install the driver that accompanies the No. 584 USB cable.

2. Set the communication port and baud rate in your software.

Setting on CEM3-G:

3. In the settings menu, set the communication mode to “USB” and select the baud rate that matches your PC software setting.

Communication:

4. Connect the No. 584 USB cable to the CEM3-G and the PC. The cable must be connected before starting the software to avoid communication errors.

5. Start the software on the PC. Note that the CEM3-G can only be connected to a PC on a 1-on-1 basis.

Data Output:

– After a single measurement, press the MEM key to output the data to the software.

– To output a range of data at one time, follow the procedure for “Output data at a time (PC, Printer)”.

Battery Life:

The BP-5 battery can be recharged about 500 times, depending on conditions. When it is old, replace it with a new one (BP-5). The battery is empty upon delivery, so be sure to charge it before first use.

How to Install the Battery:

1. Turn the cap on the end of the grip clockwise to remove it.

2. Set the battery in line with the hole as shown and slide it in.

3. Connect the cable.

4. Push the battery in to the end.

5. Carefully push in the cable and the connector.

6. Put the cap back on by turning it counter-clockwise. Be careful not to pinch the cable and the connector when putting the cap on.

To charge the device, connect the BC-3-G charger to the CEM3-G charge jack. Ensure the charger is connected to a power source. A green lamp on the charger turns on when charging is complete. It takes about 3.5 hours to charge from an empty condition.

Please observe the following warnings during charging:

1. Check the voltage on the charger and use the appropriate power source.

2. Stop charging as soon as the green lamp on the charger turns on. Excessive charging may shorten the battery life.

3. The product cannot operate when it is connected to the charger.

4. If the green lamp on the charger turns on and the red lamp starts to blink, it indicates an error. Stop using it immediately and contact a distributor.

5. Temperature must be kept within the 0-40 degree Celsius range when charging.

6. If the charger emits an abnormal smell or generates abnormal heat, stop using it immediately, move it to a safe place, and contact a distributor.

7. When not in use for a long time, charge the battery to full, then remove it from the wrench for storage. It is recommended to charge it at least once every half a year.
