What are the main safety cautions for installation?

• This unit is designed for negative ground 12 V DC operation only.

• Do not get the leads under a screw, or caught in moving parts (e.g., seat railing).

• Before making connections, turn the car ignition off to avoid short circuits.

• Connect the yellow and red power supply leads only after all other leads have been connected.

• Be sure to insulate any loose unconnected leads with electrical tape for safety.

What are the specific instructions for connecting the power supply lead?

• To connect this unit in series with other stereo components, the connected car’s circuit rating must be higher than the sum of each component’s fuse amperage rating.

• If no car circuit is rated high enough, connect the unit directly to the battery.

• When your car has an ACC (accessory) position on the ignition switch, the red power supply lead of the unit must be connected to the positive (+) terminal that is also connected to the ACC position.

How do I connect the main power leads?

Yellow lead: to the constant +12 V power terminal.

Red lead: to the +12 V power terminal which is energized when the ignition switch is in the accessory position. If there is no accessory position, connect to the constant +12 V power terminal.

Black lead: to a ground (metal) surface of the car.

How do I connect the control and illumination leads?

Blue with white stripe (AMP REM) lead: To the AMP REM IN of an optional power amplifier. This connection is only for amplifiers and a power antenna. Connecting any other system may damage the unit.

Blue (ANT REM) lead: To the power antenna control lead. If your car does not have a power antenna, leave this lead unconnected.

Orange with white stripe (ILLUMI) lead: To a car’s illumination signal. This lead lights up the buttons on the unit when you turn on the headlights.

How do I connect the speakers?

Front speaker (right): Gray (+) / Gray with black stripe (-)

Front speaker (left): White (+) / White with black stripe (-)

Rear speaker (right): Purple (+) / Purple with black stripe (-)

Rear speaker (left): Green (+) / Green with black stripe (-)

What is the memory hold connection?

When the yellow power input lead is connected, power will always be supplied to the memory circuit even when the ignition switch is turned off. This maintains settings such as the clock and preset stations.

What important notes should I consider when making connections?

• The ATT (telephone attenuator) lead is not used on this unit. Leave it insulated and unconnected.

• Before installing, check that the speaker leads are connected correctly (L/R, +/-).

• This unit is for use with 12 V DC, negative ground.

• Use speakers with an impedance of 4 to 8 ohms, and with adequate power handling capacities.

• Do not connect the speaker terminals to the car chassis, or connect the terminals of the right speakers with those of the left speaker.

• Do not ground the negative lead of any speaker to the car chassis.

• Do not attempt to connect the speakers in parallel.

• Do not connect any active speakers (with built-in amplifiers) to the speaker terminals of the unit.

• To avoid a short-circuit, cover the unconnected leads with insulating tape.

• If you use a power antenna without a relay box, connecting this unit with the supplied power connecting cable may damage the antenna.

What precautions should be taken for the installation location?

• Choose the installation location carefully so that the unit will not interfere with normal driving operations.

• Avoid installing the unit in areas subject to dust, dirt, excessive vibration, or high temperatures, such as in direct sunlight or near heater ducts.

• This unit is designed to be installed in a nearly horizontal position. Make sure the front of the unit is not facing up more than 20 degrees.

• Use only the supplied mounting hardware for a safe and secure installation.

How do I install the unit in a dashboard?

1. Insert the mounting sleeve into the dashboard.

2. Bend the claws on the mounting sleeve outwards for a tight fit. Bend the appropriate claws to hold the sleeve securely in place.

3. Mount the unit onto the mounting sleeve.

4. Attach the front panel.

To remove the unit, insert both release keys until they click, then pull the unit out.

How do I adjust the mounting angle?

The mounting angle must be set to less than 20 degrees for proper operation.

How do I set the frequency for the Wireless Rotary Commander?

This unit can be controlled by the Wireless Rotary Commander RM-X114. To do this, you must set the FM send frequency of the unit. The frequency can be selected from 87.7 MHz to 88.9 MHz in 0.2 MHz steps.

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ACC position.

2. Use a pointed object, such as a ball-point pen, to set the “Frequency send switch” on the side of the unit to the desired frequency.

What is an example of mounting the unit in a Japanese car?

You may not be able to install this unit in some makes of Japanese cars. In such a case, consult your Sony dealer. When mounting this unit to the preinstalled brackets of your car, use the supplied screws in the appropriate screw holes based on your car: T for TOYOTA and N for NISSAN.

What should I do if my car’s ignition does not have an ACC position?

After turning off the ignition, be sure to press and hold the OFF button on the unit for about 2 seconds to turn off the clock display. Otherwise, the clock display does not turn off and this causes the battery to be drained.

When should I press the RESET button?

When the installation is completed, or when the car battery is changed or the connections are changed, you must reset the unit. Press the RESET button with a pointed object, such as a ball-point pen.
