Before operating the SONY CDX-4160 for the first time or after replacing the car battery, you must reset the unit. To do this, press the reset button with a pointed object, such as a ball-point pen. The reset button is located on the front of the unit, hidden by the front panel.

Notes:

• Pressing the reset button will erase all the memorized program and memory functions.

• After connecting the power supply or resetting the unit, wait for about 10 seconds before inserting a disc. If you insert a disc within this time, the unit will not reset, and you will have to press the reset button again.

You can detach the front panel to prevent theft.

To Detach the Front Panel:

1. Press the (OFF) button.

2. Press the (RELEASE) button to open up the front panel, then detach the panel by pulling it towards you.

To Attach the Front Panel:

Align the parts of the front panel with the corresponding parts on the main unit as illustrated, and push until it clicks.

Important Notes:

• Be sure not to drop the panel when detaching it. Use the supplied front panel case for transport.

• If you press (RELEASE) while the unit is on, it will turn off automatically to protect the speakers.

• Do not attach the panel upside down or press it hard against the unit.

• Avoid exposing the front panel to direct sunlight, heat, or high humidity. Never leave it on the dashboard of a car parked in the sun.

The SONY CDX-4160 is equipped with a caution alarm. If you turn the ignition key to the OFF position without removing the front panel, a beep tone will be heard for a few seconds. This feature is only active for cars with an accessory position on the ignition key switch.

If you connect an optional power amplifier and do not use the built-in amplifier, the beep tone will be disabled.

The SONY CDX-4160 has a 12-hour digital clock. To set the clock, for example to 10:08, follow these steps:

1. Press (OFF) or (DSPL) during operation.

2. Press and hold (DSPL) for two seconds. The hour digit will flash.

3. Set the hour digits by pressing the (+) or (-) buttons to go forward or back.

4. Press (SEL) momentarily. The minute digits will flash.

5. Set the minute digits by pressing the (+) or (-) buttons.

6. Press (DSPL) momentarily. The clock is now activated and set.

Note: If your car does not have an accessory position on the ignition key switch, the clock can only be set when the unit’s power is on (e.g., radio is on or CD is playing).

To listen to a CD, simply insert it into the slot with the labeled side up. Playback will start automatically. If a CD is already inserted, press the (SOURCE) button repeatedly until “CD” appears on the display.

To play an 8 cm CD, you must use the optional Sony compact disc single adapter (CSA-8).

Basic CD Playback Controls:

Each time you press the (DSPL) button, the displayed item changes.

During CD playback, the display cycles as follows:

Elapsed playing time → Track number → Time

During radio reception, the display alternates between:

Frequency and time

Locating a Specific Track (Automatic Music Sensor – AMS):

During playback, press either side of the (SEEK/AMS) button momentarily to locate succeeding or preceding tracks.

Locating a Specific Point in a Track (Manual Search):

During playback, press and hold either side of the (SEEK/AMS) button for two seconds to search forward or backward within the current track. Release the button when you have found the desired point.

The SONY CDX-4160 offers several playback modes:

Intro Scan (Searching for a desired track):

Press the (1/INTRO) button during playback. “INTRO” will appear on the display, and the first 10 seconds of each track will be played. When you find the desired track, press the button again to return to normal playback.

Repeat Play (Playing tracks repeatedly):

Press the (2/REPEAT) button during playback. “REPEAT” will appear, and the currently playing track will be played again from the beginning after it ends. To cancel, press the button again.

Shuffle Play (Playing tracks in random order):

Press the (3/SHUF) button during playback. “SHUFFLE” will appear, and the tracks will play in a random order. To cancel, press the button again.

You can store up to 6 stations on each band (FMI, FMII, FMIII, and AM).

Memorizing Stations Automatically (Automatic Memory):

This function searches for and memorizes stations with the clearest reception.

1. Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to select the tuner.

2. Press (MODE) repeatedly to select the desired band (FMI, FMII, FMIII, or AM).

3. Press and hold (A.MEM) for two seconds. The unit will scan the band and store the strongest stations on the number buttons (1 through 6) automatically.

Memorizing Only Desired Stations (Manual Tuning):

1. Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to select the tuner.

2. Press (MODE) repeatedly to select the band.

3. Press either side of (SEEK/AMS) to tune in the station you want to store.

4. Press and hold the desired number button (1 to 6) for two seconds until “MEM” appears in the display. The station is now stored.

Receiving Memorized Stations:

1. Select the desired band (FMI, FMII, FMIII, or AM) using the (MODE) button.

2. Press the number button (1 to 6) momentarily where the desired station is stored.

If You Cannot Tune in a Preset Station:

The signal may be too weak. Press either side of the (SEEK/AMS) button momentarily to search for the station (automatic tuning). Scanning stops when a station is received. If automatic tuning stops too frequently, press (SENS) momentarily until “LCL” appears (local seek mode). In this mode, only stations with relatively strong signals will be tuned in.

If FM stereo reception is poor, you can switch to Monaural Mode. Press the (SENS) button momentarily until “MONO” appears on the display. The sound will improve, but it will be monaural (the “ST” indicator will disappear). To go back to normal stereo mode, press the (SENS) button again until “MONO” disappears.

You can adjust bass, treble, balance, and fader. The bass and treble levels can be stored independently for each source (CD and radio).

1. Press the (SEL) button repeatedly to cycle through the options: VOL (volume) → BAS (bass) → TRE (treble) → BALANCE (balance) → FADER (fader).

2. Within three seconds of selecting an item, adjust it by pressing the (+) or (-) buttons. After three seconds of inactivity, the buttons will revert to controlling the volume.

Boosting the Bass Sound (D-BASS):

The D-BASS function boosts the low-frequency signal for a clear and powerful bass sound. The Digital D-BASS function (available during CD playback) creates an even sharper effect.

• Adjusting the bass curve: Turn the D-BASS dial to adjust the bass level to 1, 2, or 3. “D-BASS” or “DIGITAL D-BASS” will appear in the display.

• To cancel: Turn the D-BASS dial to the OFF position.

Muting the Beep Tone:

To turn the confirmation beep tone off, press the (+) button while pressing and holding the (SEL) button. To turn it back on, repeat the same procedure. Note that if you connect an optional power amplifier and do not use the built-in amplifier, the beep tone will be disabled.

Press the (MUTE) button. “MUTE” will flash on the display, and the audio will be silenced. To restore the previous volume level, press the (MUTE) button again.

The Power Select Function allows the clock to be displayed even when the unit is powered off. This function is only available for cars with an accessory position on the ignition key switch.

To turn the Power Select Function ON, press the (OFF) button while pressing and holding the (SEL) button. This ties the clock display power to the accessory position of the ignition key. To avoid battery wear, the clock is not displayed while the unit is initializing.

General Precautions:

• If your car was parked in direct sunlight, allow the unit to cool off before operating it.

• If there is no power, check connections first, then the fuse.

• If there is no sound from a two-speaker system, set the fader control to the center position.

• A power antenna, if equipped, will extend automatically when the unit is operating.

Notes on Handling CDs:

• Handle discs by their edges; do not touch the surface.

• Do not stick paper or tape on the labeled surface.

• Before playing, clean discs with a cleaning cloth, wiping from the center out.

• Do not use solvents like benzine, thinner, or antistatic spray intended for analog discs.

• Do not expose discs to direct sunlight or heat sources.

Moisture Condensation:

On rainy or damp days, moisture may condense on the lenses inside the player, causing it not to operate. If this happens, remove the disc and wait for about an hour for the moisture to evaporate.

Fuse Replacement:

When replacing the fuse (10 A), be sure to use one that matches the amperage. If the fuse blows, check the power connection. If it blows again after replacement, there may be an internal malfunction and you should consult a professional.

Cleaning the Connectors:

If the unit does not function properly, the connectors between the unit and the front panel may be dirty. Detach the front panel and clean the connectors with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. Do not apply too much force.

General

If there is no sound from your SONY CDX-4160, please check the following:

• Adjust the volume with the (+) button.

• For two-speaker systems, set the fader control to the center position.

The contents of the memory may have been erased if:

• The power cord or battery has been disconnected.

• The reset button has been pressed.

You will need to store the settings again into the memory.

If indications do not appear in the display, remove the front panel and clean the connectors between the panel and the main unit with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.

CD cannot be loaded:

• Another CD may already be loaded.

• The CD may have been forcibly inserted upside down.

Play does not begin:

• The disc may be dusty. Clean the disc.

CD is automatically ejected:

• The ambient temperature is more than 50°C (122°F).

CD will not eject:

• Press the ▲ (eject) button for two seconds.

The operation buttons do not function:

• Press the reset button.

The sound skips due to vibration:

• The unit is installed at an angle of more than 20°.

• The unit is not installed in a sturdy part of the car.

Preset tuning is not possible:

• Store the correct frequency.

• The broadcast signal is too weak.

Automatic tuning is not possible:

• The broadcast signal is too weak. Use manual tuning instead.

The “ST” (stereo) indication flashes:

• Tune in the frequency correctly.

• The broadcast signal is too weak. Set to the MONO mode to improve reception.

The following indications will flash for about five seconds to indicate an error.
