You must reset the SONY CDX-6500 before operating it for the first time or after replacing the car battery. To reset the unit:

1. Remove the front panel.

2. Press the reset button with a pointed object, such as a ballpoint pen. The reset button is located on the front side of the unit, behind the front panel.

Notes:

• Pressing the reset button will erase the clock setting and some memorized program and memory functions.

• When you connect the power supply cord to the unit or reset it, wait for about 10 seconds before inserting a disc. If you insert a disc within this time, the unit will not be reset, and you will have to press the reset button again.

To detach the front panel:

1. Press the OFF button.

2. Press the RELEASE button, then slide the front panel a little to the left, and pull it off towards you. This helps protect the unit from being stolen.

To attach the front panel:

Attach part (a) of the front panel to part (b) of the unit as illustrated, and push the left side into position until it clicks.

Notes on handling the front panel:

• Do not drop the panel when detaching it.

• If detached while the unit is on, the power will turn off automatically to prevent speaker damage.

• Use the supplied front panel case when carrying it.

• Do not attach the panel upside down or press it too hard against the unit.

• Avoid exposing the front panel to direct sunlight, heat sources, or high humidity.

If you turn the ignition key switch to the OFF position without removing the front panel, the caution alarm on your SONY CDX-6500 will beep for a few seconds as a reminder to take the panel with you. If you connect an optional power amplifier and do not use the built-in amplifier, the beep sound will be deactivated.

The SONY CDX-6500 has a 12-hour digital clock. To set it (e.g., to 10:08):

1. Press DSPL during operation. If the POWER SELECT function is set to “OFF,” you must first set it to “ON” (see Other Functions).

2. Press and hold DSPL for two seconds. The hour indication will flash.

3. Rotate the dial to set the hour. Rotate it backward or forward to adjust.

4. Press the SOUND button. The minute indication will flash.

5. Rotate the dial to set the minute.

6. Press DSPL. The clock starts.

Note: If your car does not have an accessory position on the ignition key switch, the clock cannot be set unless the power is turned on. Set the clock after turning on the radio or starting CD playback.

To listen to a CD on your SONY CDX-6500:

1. Insert the CD with the label side up. Playback will start automatically.

2. If a CD is already inserted, press the SOURCE button repeatedly until “CD” appears on the display.

To control playback:

• Stop playback: Press the ▲ (eject) button or the OFF button.

• Eject the CD: Press the ▲ (eject) button.

Note: To play an 8 cm CD, use the optional Sony compact disc single adapter (CSA-8).

During CD playback on your SONY CDX-6500, each press of the DSPL button changes the display item in the following order:

Elapsed playing time → Track number → Clock → MOTION DISPLAY*

*In MOTION DISPLAY mode, all the above items are scrolled in the display one by one in order.

To locate a specific track (Automatic Music Sensor – AMS):

During playback, push the SEEK/AMS control up or down and release for each track you want to skip.

• Push up to locate succeeding tracks.

• Push down to locate preceding tracks.

To locate a specific point in a track (Manual Search):

During playback, push the SEEK/AMS control up or down and hold it. Release when you have found the desired point.

• Push up to search forward.

• Push down to search backward.

Note: If “LLLL” or “רררר” appears in the display, you have reached the beginning or the end of the disc and cannot go any further.

Playing tracks repeatedly (Repeat Play):

1. Press the number button ① during playback.

2. “REP” will appear in the display. When the current track is over, it will play again from the beginning.

3. To cancel this mode, press the button ① again.

Playing tracks in random order (Shuffle Play):

1. Press the number button ② during playback.

2. “SHUF” will appear in the display. The tracks will play in a random order.

3. To cancel this mode, press the button ② again.

The Best Tuning Memory (BTM) feature on your SONY CDX-6500 selects stations with the strongest signals and memorizes them. You can store up to 6 stations on each band (FM I, FM II, FM III, and AM).

1. Press the SOURCE button repeatedly to select the tuner.

2. Press the MODE button repeatedly to select the desired band (FM I, FM II, FM III, or AM).

3. Press and hold the SENS/BTM button for two seconds. The unit will store stations in the order of their frequencies on the number buttons. A beep will sound when the setting is stored.

Caution: When tuning in stations while driving, use Best Tuning Memory to prevent accidents.

You can store up to 6 stations on each band in the order of your choice on your SONY CDX-6500.

1. Press the SOURCE button repeatedly to select the tuner.

2. Press the MODE button repeatedly to select the band.

3. Push the SEEK/AMS control up or down to tune in the station that you want to store.

4. Press and hold the desired number button (① to ⑥) until “MEM” appears. The number button indication will appear in the display, confirming the station is stored.

Note: If you try to store another station on the same number button, the previously stored station will be erased.

If you can’t tune in a preset station, you can search for it:

• Automatic Tuning: Push and release the SEEK/AMS control up or down. Scanning will stop when the unit receives a station. Push the control repeatedly until the desired station is received.

• Manual Tuning: If you know the frequency, push the SEEK/AMS control up or down and hold it until the desired frequency appears.

Note: If automatic tuning stops too frequently, press the SENS/BTM button repeatedly until “LCL” (local seek mode) is displayed. In this mode, only stations with relatively strong signals will be tuned in.

If FM stereo reception is poor, you can switch to Monaural Mode:

1. Press the SENS/BTM button repeatedly until “MONO” appears on the display.

2. The sound will improve, but it will be monaural (the “ST” indicator will disappear).

3. To return to normal stereo mode, press the SENS/BTM button again until “MONO” disappears.

You can adjust various sound settings and store the bass and treble levels on your SONY CDX-6500.

1. Press the SOUND button repeatedly to select the item you want to adjust. The cycle is: BAS (bass) → TRE (treble) → BAL (left-right balance) → FAD (front-rear fader) → VOL (volume).

2. Within three seconds of selecting the item, rotate the dial to adjust its level. After three seconds of inactivity, the dial function reverts to volume control.

The D-BASS function on your SONY CDX-6500 boosts the low-frequency signal for a clear and powerful bass sound, similar in effect to an optional subwoofer system.

To adjust the bass curve:

1. Turn the D-BASS control to adjust the bass level to 1, 2, or 3. “D-BASS” will appear in the display.

2. To cancel the D-BASS function, turn the control to the OFF position.

Note: If the bass sound becomes distorted, adjust the D-BASS control or the main volume.

To cancel the beep sound that confirms button presses:

Press the number button ⑥ while pressing the SOUND button.

To turn the beep sound back on, press these buttons again.

Note: If you connect an optional power amplifier and do not use the built-in amplifier, the beep sound will be disabled.

The POWER SELECT function is available only for cars with an accessory position on the ignition key switch. It ties the clock display power to the accessory position.

To turn the Power Select function ON:

Press the OFF button while pressing the SOUND button.

This allows the clock to be displayed even when the unit is off, as long as the ignition is in the accessory position. To avoid battery wear, the clock is not displayed while the unit is initializing.

Note: This function cannot be operated with the supplied card remote commander.

When the battery becomes weak, the range of the card remote commander becomes shorter. Replace the battery with a new CR2025 lithium battery.

1. Slide the battery tray out of the remote.

2. Insert the new battery with the + side facing up.

3. Slide the tray back into the remote until it clicks into place.

Notes on lithium battery:

• Keep the battery out of the reach of children.

• Wipe the battery with a dry cloth to ensure a good contact.

• Observe the correct polarity when installing.

• Do not hold the battery with metallic tweezers, as this may cause a short-circuit.

WARNING: The battery may explode if mistreated. Do not recharge, disassemble, or dispose of in fire.

• If your car was parked in direct sunlight, allow the SONY CDX-6500 to cool off before operating it.

• If no power is being supplied, check the connections first. If they are in order, check the fuse.

• If no sound comes from the speakers of a two-speaker system, set the fader control to the center position.

• If your car has a power aerial, it will extend automatically while the unit is operating.

• A dirty or defective disc may cause sound dropouts. To enjoy optimum sound, handle the disc by its edge and do not touch the surface.

• Do not stick paper or tape on the labeled surface.

• Before playing, clean the discs with an optional cleaning cloth. Wipe each disc from the center out.

• Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner, commercially available cleaners, or antistatic spray intended for analog discs.

• Do not expose discs to direct sunlight or heat sources.

On a rainy day or in a very damp area, moisture may condense on the lenses inside the CD player of your SONY CDX-6500. If this occurs, the unit will not operate properly. In this case, remove the disc and wait for about an hour until the moisture evaporates.

When replacing the fuse, be sure to use one that matches the amperage described on the original fuse (10 A). If the fuse blows, check the power connection and replace the fuse. If the fuse blows again after replacement, there may be an internal malfunction. In such a case, consult your nearest Sony dealer.

Warning: Never use a fuse with an amperage rating exceeding the one supplied with the unit as this could damage the SONY CDX-6500.

The SONY CDX-6500 may not function properly if the connectors between the unit and the front panel are not clean. To prevent this:

1. For safety, turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition switch.

2. Open the front panel by pressing RELEASE, then detach it.

3. Clean the connectors on both the main unit and the back of the front panel with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.

4. Do not apply too much force, as the connectors may be damaged.

Note: Never touch the connectors directly with your fingers or any metal device.

To remove the SONY CDX-6500 unit from its mounting sleeve:

1. Insert the supplied release keys into the slots on both sides of the unit until they click.

2. Pull the unit out while the release keys are inserted.

3. To remove the trim ring (front cover), press the clip inside the front cover with a thin screwdriver and gently pry the cover free.

If there is no sound, check the following:

• Rotate the dial in a clockwise direction to adjust the volume.

• For two-speaker systems, set the fader control to the center position.

The contents of the memory may have been erased because:

• The power cord or car battery has been disconnected.

• The reset button has been pressed.

You will need to store the settings again into the memory.

If the display is blank, the connectors between the main unit and the front panel may be dirty. Remove the front panel and clean the connectors as described in the maintenance section.

If a CD cannot be loaded, check for the following causes:

• Another CD is already loaded in the unit.

• The CD was forcibly inserted upside down.

If playback does not begin, the disc may be dirty. Clean the disc and try again.

The SONY CDX-6500 may automatically eject a CD if the ambient temperature exceeds 50°C (122°F).

If a CD will not eject, press the eject button (▲) for two seconds.

If the operation buttons do not function, press the reset button.

Sound may skip during CD playback due to vibration if:

• The unit is installed at an angle of more than 60°.

• The unit is not installed in a sturdy part of the car.

If you cannot tune to a preset station, it may be because:

• The wrong frequency was memorized. Please memorize the correct frequency.

• The broadcast signal is too weak.

If automatic tuning does not find a station, the broadcast signal is likely too weak. You should try using manual tuning instead.

The “ST” indication flashes when the radio signal is weak. This could be due to:

• The frequency is not tuned accurately. Re-tune to the frequency accurately.

• The broadcast signal is too weak. In this case, set the unit to MONO mode to improve reception.

The following indications will flash for about five seconds on your SONY CDX-6500:

If the above-mentioned solutions do not help improve the situation, consult your nearest Sony dealer.
