Please follow these safety guidelines when using your SONY BRAVIA KDL-52XBR5:

General Safety:

• Operate the TV only on 120 – 240 V AC.

• To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose the TV to rain or moisture.

• The TV shall not be exposed to dripping or splashing and no objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shall be placed on the TV.

• If any liquid or solid object falls inside the cabinet, unplug the TV immediately and have it checked by qualified service personnel.

• If you will not be using the TV for several days, disconnect the power by pulling the plug itself. Never pull on the cord.

AC Power Cord:

• Do not place the TV where the power cord is subject to wear or abuse.

• Do not pinch, bend, or twist the cord excessively.

• Do not allow anything to rest on or roll over the power cord.

• Keep the power cord away from heat sources.

• When disconnecting the AC power cord, grasp the plug, not the cord.

• Use only an original Sony AC power cord.

Electric Shock Prevention:

• To prevent electric shock, do not use the polarized AC plug with an extension cord, receptacle or other outlet unless the blades can be fully inserted.

• Do not touch the AC power cord or the TV with a wet hand.

Servicing:

• Do not attempt to service the TV yourself. Opening the cabinet may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.

Proper installation is crucial for the safe and reliable operation of your SONY BRAVIA KDL-52XBR5.

Ventilation:

• Never block or cover the ventilation slots and openings. Do not cover them with a cloth or other materials.

• Never place the TV on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar surface.

• Do not install the TV in a confined space like a bookcase unless proper ventilation is provided.

• Leave adequate space around the TV set for air circulation:

• Installed on the wall: At least 4 inches (10 cm) from the top and sides, and 11 7/8 inches (30 cm) from the back wall.

• Installed with stand: At least 4 inches (10 cm) from the sides, 2 3/8 inches (6 cm) from the back, and 11 7/8 inches (30 cm) from the top.

Placement:

• The TV should be installed near an easily accessible AC power outlet.

• Place the TV on a stable, level surface. Do not hang anything on the TV or allow children to climb on it.

• Do not install the TV in places subject to extreme temperatures (e.g., direct sunlight, near a radiator), excessive dust, or mechanical vibration.

• To obtain the best picture, do not expose the screen to direct illumination or direct sunlight. It is recommended to use spot lighting directed down from the ceiling or cover windows with opaque drapery.

To avoid dropping the TV and causing serious injury, please follow these guidelines:

1. Before carrying the TV, disconnect all cables.

2. Carrying this large size TV requires at least two or three people.

3. When you carry the TV, place your hands as illustrated in the manual, holding it firmly from the bottom. Do not put stress on the LCD panel and the frame around the screen.

4. When carrying the TV, do not subject it to shocks, vibration, or excessive force.

5. When lifting or moving the TV, hold it firmly from the bottom. Do not place your palm directly under the panel.

Cleaning the Screen Surface/Cabinet:

1. Unplug the AC power cord before cleaning. Failure to do so may result in electric shock.

2. Clean the cabinet of the TV with a dry, soft cloth.

3. To remove dust from the screen, wipe it gently with a soft cloth.

4. Stubborn stains may be removed with a cloth slightly dampened with a solution of mild soap and warm water.

5. Never use strong solvents such as thinner or benzine for cleaning.

Cleaning the AC Power Plug:

Unplug the AC power plug and clean it regularly. If the plug is covered with dust and it picks up moisture, its insulation may deteriorate and result in a fire.

Cleaning Ventilation Holes:

Clean the ventilation holes regularly (once a month) using a vacuum cleaner to remove accumulated dust, which can ensure proper ventilation.

• Although the LCD screen is made with high-precision technology and has effective pixels of 99.99% or more, black dots or bright points of light (red, blue, or green) may appear constantly. This is a structural property of the LCD panel and is not a malfunction.

• Do not push or scratch the LCD screen, or place objects on top of the TV. The image may become uneven or the panel may be damaged.

• If the TV is used in a cold place, a smear may occur in the picture or the picture may become dark. This does not indicate a failure and improves as the temperature rises.

• Ghosting may occur when still pictures are displayed continuously. It should disappear after a few moments.

• The screen and cabinet get warm when the TV is in use. This is not a malfunction.

• Do not throw anything at the TV. The screen glass may break from the impact and cause serious injury.

• If the surface of the TV cracks, do not touch it until you have unplugged the AC power cord.

To prepare your TV for wall-mounting, the Table-Top Stand must be removed first. Follow these steps:

1. Disconnect all cables from the TV.

2. Start removing the screws from the back of the TV that attach the stand. Do not remove any other screws.

3. Once the screws are removed, lift the TV off the stand. This task requires at least two or three people. Do not attempt to lift the TV by yourself.

Important Notes:

• Do not remove the Table-Top Stand for any reason other than to wall-mount the TV.

• Be sure to store the removed screws and stand in a safe place away from small children.

• For product protection and safety, Sony strongly recommends that you use the Wall-Mount Bracket model designed for your TV (SU-WL500) and that the installation is performed by a Sony dealer or licensed contractor.

The inputs and outputs are located on the left side and the rear of the TV.

Left Side:

• Headphone jack: For connecting headphones.

• VIDEO IN 2: Composite video and audio (L/MONO, R) inputs for devices like camcorders or game consoles.

• HDMI IN 2: High-Definition Multimedia Interface input for high-definition digital audio/video devices.

Rear Panel:

• PC IN (RGB/AUDIO): For connecting a personal computer using an HD15-HD15 cable and a stereo mini audio cable.

• HDMI IN 1 & 3: Additional HDMI inputs. HDMI IN 1 supports DVI connections with an adapter and separate audio input.

• REMOTE (XBR5 models only): Jack for receiving an external control signal.

• VIDEO IN 1 & 3: S-Video and Composite video/audio inputs.

• COMPONENT IN 1 & 2: Component video (YPBPR) and audio inputs for high-quality analog video sources.

• DMex/SERVICE: USB port for service or for the optional BRAVIA external module (DMex).

• DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL): Optical audio output for digital audio equipment.

• AUDIO OUT (VAR/FIX): Analog left and right audio output jacks for a stereo system.

• AC IN: For the supplied AC power cord.

• VHF/UHF/CABLE: RF input for your Cable or VHF/UHF antenna.

The Initial Setup screen appears when you turn on the TV for the first time after connecting it.

1. The TV will prompt you to select a language (English, Español, Français). Use the arrow buttons on the remote to highlight your choice and press the center (+) button to select.

2. Follow the on-screen help text to run Auto Program. This will scan for all available analog and digital channels from your connected antenna or cable source.

3. If you are receiving channels from a cable box or satellite receiver and the VHF/UHF/CABLE input is not connected, you can select Skip to bypass the Auto Program.

4. When Auto Program is complete, the TV will display how many analog and digital channels were found.

If you need to run the setup again later, you can select Initial Setup from the Settings menu in the XMB (XrossMediaBar).

Here are some of the key remote control functions:

• POWER / TV POWER: Press POWER to turn on/off external equipment selected with the FUNCTION buttons. Press TV POWER to turn the TV on/off.

• HOME: Press to display the TV Home Menu, also known as the XMB (XrossMediaBar), to access settings, channels, and inputs.

• 0-9 and ENT: Use the number buttons to directly enter a channel number. The channel changes after two seconds, or immediately if you press ENT.

• INPUT: Press to display the list of external inputs (like HDMI, Component, etc.). Press repeatedly to cycle through them.

• CH +/-: Press to scan up or down through the channels.

• VOL +/-: Press to increase or decrease the volume.

• MUTING: Press to mute the sound. Press again or VOL + to restore sound.

• OPTIONS: Press to display a list of convenient functions and menu shortcuts relevant to the current screen or input.

• RETURN: Press to go back to the previous screen or menu.

• Arrow Buttons (up/down/left/right) and Center (+) Button: Use these to navigate on-screen menus and select items.

• WIDE: Press repeatedly to cycle through screen aspect ratio modes (Wide Zoom, Normal, Full, Zoom).

• PICTURE: Press repeatedly to cycle through picture modes (Vivid, Standard, Cinema, etc.).

• SOUND: Press repeatedly to cycle through sound modes (Dynamic, Standard, Custom).

• CC: Press to turn Closed Captions on or off.

The remote control for your SONY BRAVIA KDL-52XBR5 is preset to operate certain Sony brand equipment (Blu-ray Disc Player, DVD Player, Satellite Receiver) without programming. For non-Sony equipment, follow these steps:

1. Look up the three-digit code for your equipment in the Manufacturer’s Codes List in the TV’s operating instructions.

2. Press and hold the appropriate FUNCTION button (e.g., BD, DVD, or STB) and the INPUT button simultaneously until the FUNCTION button lights up.

3. While the button is lit, enter the three-digit code using the number buttons (0-9). You must enter the code within 10 seconds.

4. Press the green POWER button while the FUNCTION button is still lit.

5. If programmed correctly, the selected FUNCTION button will blink twice. If it blinks five times, the programming was not successful, and you should repeat the process with the next code listed for your brand.

To confirm, try turning the equipment on and off by pressing the green POWER button on the remote.

These features allow you to view two pictures simultaneously. Note that the VHF/UHF/CABLE input must be connected to use these features, and Closed Captioning is not available for the PIP feature.

To Display the Sub Window:

1. While watching one of the compatible main inputs, press the OPTIONS button on your remote.

2. Use the up/down arrow buttons to highlight P&P or PIP, and press the center (+) button to display the sub window.

To Change Inputs or Channels in a Window:

• Use the left/right arrow buttons to highlight the window you want to change.

• Press the INPUT button to select a different input for that window, or use the CH +/- or number buttons to change the channel.

To Change the Window Size of P&P:

• Press the left/right arrow buttons to highlight a window, then press the up/down arrow buttons to change its size.

To Exit from P&P or PIP:

• Press the OPTIONS button, highlight Exit P&P or Exit PIP, and press the center (+) button. You can also press the RETURN button to exit.

Availability:

The XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) is the main menu system for your TV.

1. Press the HOME button on the remote to display the XMB™.

2. Use the left/right arrow buttons to move along the horizontal Media Category Bar to select a category: Settings, TV, or External Inputs.

3. Once a category is selected, use the up/down arrow buttons to move along the vertical Category Object Bar to highlight a specific feature or setting.

4. Press the center (+) button when your desired item is highlighted to enter its submenu or activate it.

5. Within a submenu, use the arrow buttons and the center (+) button to make adjustments.

6. Press the RETURN button to go back to the previous screen, or press HOME to exit the XMB™ completely.

You can customize the picture to your preference in the Picture Settings menu. Here are some key adjustments:

• Picture Mode: Select a preset mode like Vivid (enhanced contrast), Standard (for home entertainment), Cinema (for film-based content), or Custom (to store your own settings).

• Backlight: Brightens or darkens the backlight level.

• Picture: Increases or decreases picture contrast.

• Brightness: Brightens or darkens the overall picture.

• Color: Increases or decreases color intensity.

• Hue: Adjusts the green and red tones.

• Color Temperature: Adjusts the white balance (Cool, Neutral, Warm 1, Warm 2).

• Sharpness: Sharpens or softens the edges in the picture.

• Noise Reduction: Reduces random picture noise.

• MPEG Noise Reduction: Reduces the mosaic effect in compressed video like DVDs.

• Advanced Settings: Access further adjustments like Black Corrector, Advanced Contrast Enhancer (Advanced C.E.), Gamma, and Live Color.

The Parental Lock feature allows you to block programs based on their rating.

1. Navigate to Settings > Parental Lock in the XMB™.

2. Set a Password: The first time you access this menu, you will be prompted to create a four-digit password using the number buttons on the remote. You will need this password for any future access.

3. Select Country: Choose U.S.A. or Canada for the appropriate rating system.

4. Set Rating Level: You can choose a preset level (Child, Youth, Young Adult) or select Custom to manually block specific TV and Movie ratings.

5. Block Unrated Programs: You can choose to block all programs that do not have a rating.

6. Channel Block: This allows you to block specific channels entirely, regardless of program ratings.

To view a blocked program or channel, you must enter the correct password when prompted.

Sony strongly recommends taking measures to prevent the TV from toppling. An unsecured TV can cause property damage, serious bodily injury, or even death.

General Prevention:

• Secure the TV to a wall and/or stand.

• Do not allow children to play or climb on furniture and TV sets.

• Avoid placing items on the TV.

• Never install the TV on slippery, unstable, or uneven surfaces, or on furniture that can be used as steps (e.g., a chest of drawers).

• Route all power and connecting cables so they are not accessible to curious children.

Recommended Measures:

1. Secure the TV Stand: Make sure the stand can support the weight of the TV. Use two angle braces (not supplied) to secure the stand to the wall stud.

2. Secure the TV to the Stand: Use hardware like an M6 × 10-12 mm anchor bolt to screw into the TV’s Table-Top stand. Then use a strong rope or chain to attach the stand to the wall or furniture.

3. Anchor the TV to the Wall: Use hardware (not supplied) such as two M6 anchor bolts screwed into the top-most wall-mount holes on the rear of the TV. Attach a strong rope or chain to one bolt. Pass the rope through a wall-anchor secured to a wall stud, then attach it to the other M6 anchor bolt on the TV.

If there is no picture, please try the following steps:

• Check that the power cord is securely connected to both the TV and the wall outlet.

• Press the POWER button on the TV or remote to ensure it is turned on.

• Check your antenna or cable connections to ensure they are secure.

• If you are using an external device (like a cable box or DVD player), check the connection to the TV and make sure the device is powered on.

• Press the INPUT button on the remote to select the correct video source from the External Inputs list.

• Check the Power Saving settings. If set to “Picture Off”, the screen will be dark but audio will work. Press any button on the remote to turn the picture back on.

• Aspect Ratio: Some programs are filmed in aspect ratios wider than 16:9 (common for theatrical movies). This will result in black bands at the top and bottom of the screen. Programs in a 4:3 aspect ratio will have black bands on the left and right sides. This is normal.

• Wide Mode Setting: Press the WIDE button on the remote to cycle through different screen modes (e.g., Normal, Full, Zoom) to find one that best fits the content you are watching. You can also change the Display Area setting to enlarge the picture.

• Commercials: During commercials, the picture may suddenly get smaller. This is due to the broadcasting method, as HD channels switch to SD content for ads.

If you have issues with the audio, check the following:

• Press the VOL + button to increase the volume.

• Press the MUTING button to ensure the TV is not muted. The word “Muting” should not be on the screen.

• Disconnect any headphones if they are plugged in.

• In the Audio Options settings, check that Speakers is set to TV Speakers. If it is set to Audio System, sound will not come from the TV’s speakers.

• For noisy sound, ensure the antenna or cable connections are secure and the cable is undamaged. Keep the antenna/cable away from other connecting cords.

If your remote control is not working, try these solutions:

• Check the batteries. Ensure they are inserted with the correct polarity (+/-) or replace them with new ones.

• Point the remote directly at the remote control sensor on the front of the TV.

• Make sure there are no obstacles between the remote and the TV’s sensor.

• Fluorescent lighting can sometimes interfere with remote operation; try turning off any nearby fluorescent lamps.

• If trying to control the TV, press the TV (FUNCTION) button first. If trying to control another device (like a cable box or DVD player), press the corresponding FUNCTION button (STB, DVD, etc.) first.

• If controlling non-Sony equipment, you may need to reprogram the remote with the correct manufacturer’s code. It is also possible that some non-Sony equipment is not compatible and will require its original remote.

To reset the TV to its original factory settings, follow this procedure. WARNING: This process will clear all of your customized settings, including Parental Lock settings.

1. Turn on the TV.

2. While holding down the UP ARROW button on the remote control, press the POWER button on the TV set itself (not the remote).

3. The TV will turn itself off, then back on again.

4. Release the UP ARROW button on the remote.

The reset is now complete, and all settings have been restored to their factory defaults.
