• The TV should be installed near an easily accessible power outlet.

Proper cleaning will maintain the appearance and performance of your SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR4. Follow these steps:

1. Unplug the AC power cord before cleaning to prevent electric shock.

2. For the Cabinet: Clean the cabinet of the TV with a dry, soft cloth.

3. For the Screen: To remove dust from the screen, wipe it gently with a soft cloth. Stubborn stains may be removed with a cloth slightly dampened with a solution of mild soap and warm water.

Also, clean the AC power plug regularly. If the plug is covered with dust and it picks up moisture, its insulation may deteriorate and result in a fire.

The slots and openings in the TV are for necessary ventilation. To ensure reliable operation and protect it from overheating, these openings must never be blocked or covered. Follow these ventilation rules:

• Never cover the slots with a cloth or other materials.

• Never block the openings by placing the TV on a bed, sofa, rug, or other similar soft surface.

• Do not place the TV in a confined space like a bookcase or built-in cabinet unless proper ventilation is provided.

• Maintain adequate space around the TV set for air circulation:

Installed on the wall: Leave at least 4 inches (10 cm) of space on the top and sides, and 11 7/8 inches (30 cm) at the bottom.

Installed with stand: Leave at least 4 inches (10 cm) on the top and sides, 11 7/8 inches (30 cm) at the back, and 2 3/8 inches (6 cm) at the bottom.

• The LCD screen is made with high-precision technology and has effective pixels of 99.99% or more. However, black dots or bright points of light (red, blue, or green) may appear constantly on the screen. This is a structural property of the LCD panel and is not a malfunction.

• Uneven brightness may be observed when the TV is viewed in a dark room without an input source. This is normal. Changing the Picture mode, Backlight setting, enabling the Light Sensor, or turning on Power management will improve this condition.

• Do not push, scratch, or place objects on top of the TV. The image may become uneven or the LCD panel could be damaged.

• If the TV is used in a cold place, a smear may occur or the picture may become dark. This is not a failure and will improve as the temperature rises.

• Ghosting (image retention) may occur when still pictures are displayed continuously. It should disappear after a few moments.

• The screen and cabinet get warm during use. This is not a malfunction.

• Do not throw anything at the TV, as the screen glass may break from impact.

Before mounting your SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR4 on a wall, the Table-Top Stand must be removed. Follow these steps:

1. Disconnect all cables from the TV.

2. Start removing the screws from the back of the TV that attach the stand. Do not remove any other screws from the TV.

3. Once the screws are removed, lift the TV off the stand. This task requires at least two or three people. Do not attempt to lift the TV by yourself.

Important Notes:

• Do not remove the Table-Top Stand for any reason other than to wall-mount the TV.

• Be sure to store the removed screws and Table-Top Stand in a safe place away from small children, for potential future use.

• For product protection and safety, Sony strongly recommends that wall-mounting be performed by a Sony dealer or licensed contractor using a Wall-Mount Bracket designed for your TV.

You can use your SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR4 as a monitor for your PC. You can connect via an HD15 (VGA) cable or an HDMI cable.

For HD15 (VGA) Connection:

1. Connect one end of an HD15-HD15 cable (analog RGB, not supplied) to the PC’s video output.

2. Connect the other end of the HD15-HD15 cable to the PC IN jack on the rear of the TV.

3. Connect an audio cable with stereo mini plugs from your PC’s audio output to the AUDIO jack next to the PC IN port on the TV.

For HDMI Connection:

• Connect an HDMI cable from your PC’s HDMI output to any of the HDMI IN jacks on the TV.

After connecting the PC, set the output signal from your PC according to the supported signal chart. If the TV receives no signal from the PC for more than 30 seconds, it will enter standby mode automatically.

PC Input Signal Reference Chart

For the best picture quality, it is recommended to use the signals in bold with a 60 Hz vertical frequency. This TV’s PC input does not support Sync on Green, Composite Sync, or interlaced signals.

Your SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR4 is equipped with BRAVIA Theatre Sync, which allows communication between compatible Sony equipment using the HDMI Control function.

Connecting Equipment:

• Use an HDMI cable that has the HDMI logo to connect your compatible Sony equipment to the TV.

Setting up HDMI Control:

• To make the function operate, you must turn on the HDMI Control feature in the TV’s menu. Navigate to Settings > HDMI Settings > HDMI Control and set it to On.

• You must also enable the HDMI Control function on your connected Sony equipment. Refer to that equipment’s operating instructions.

Available HDMI Control Functions:

• System Power Off: Turn off the connected equipment automatically when you turn off the TV.

• One-Touch Play: When the connected equipment is turned on, the TV will automatically turn on and switch to the correct HDMI input.

• System Turn On: Automatically turn on equipment listed under External Inputs on the XMB™ menu when you select it.

Additional Operations with a Sony A/V Receiver:

• Turn on the A/V receiver when the TV is turned on.

• Automatically switch the audio output to the A/V receiver’s speakers.

• Adjust the volume and mute the A/V receiver using the TV’s remote control.

The Initial Setup screen appears when you turn on the TV for the first time. It helps you create a list of available channels from an antenna or direct cable connection.

1. When the “Initial Setup” screen appears, you will first be prompted to select a language (English, Español, Français). Use the arrow buttons on the remote to highlight your choice and press the center button to select.

2. Follow the on-screen help text to run the Auto Program. This will scan for all available analog and digital channels. This is for users with a direct antenna or cable connection to the TV’s VHF/UHF/CABLE input.

3. If you are receiving channels from a cable box or satellite receiver, you can select Skip to bypass the Auto Program.

4. When Auto Program is complete, the TV will display the number of analog and digital channels found.

To Run Initial Setup or Auto Program Again:

If you need to run the setup again, press the HOME button on the remote, navigate to the Settings category, and select Initial Setup from the list.

Follow these steps to program your TV’s remote control to operate other A/V equipment:

1. Find the three-digit code for your equipment from the Manufacturer’s Codes List in the TV’s operating instructions.

2. Press and hold the appropriate FUNCTION button (e.g., DVD, STB) and the INPUT button simultaneously until the FUNCTION button lights up.

3. While the button is lit, enter the three-digit code for your equipment using the number buttons (0-9).

4. Press the POWER button while the FUNCTION button is still lit.

5. If programmed correctly, the selected FUNCTION button will blink twice. If it blinks five times, the code was incorrect or the process was not completed successfully. Try again with the same or a different code if available.

To confirm, try turning the equipment on and off with the remote’s green POWER button. If it works, the programming is complete.

P&P and PIP allow you to view two pictures simultaneously. P&P provides two windows side-by-side, while PIP provides a smaller window over the main PC input signal.

To Display the Sub Window:

1. While watching one of the compatible inputs (TV channels, Video, Component, HDMI, or PC), press the OPTIONS button on the remote.

2. Use the arrow buttons to highlight P&P or PIP, and press the center button to display the sub window.

To Change Inputs or Channels in a Window:

• Use the left/right arrow buttons to highlight the window you want to change.

• Press the INPUT button to select a different input source, or use the CH +/- buttons or number pad to change the TV channel.

To Change the Window Size of P&P:

• Use the left/right arrow buttons to highlight a window, then press the up/down arrow buttons to change its size.

To Exit from P&P and PIP:

1. Press the OPTIONS button to display the menu.

2. Use the arrow buttons to highlight Exit P&P or Exit PIP and press the center button. You can also press the RETURN button to exit.

Note: A VHF/UHF/CABLE input must be connected to use the PIP feature. Closed Caption (CC) is not available in PIP mode.

The XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) is the main menu system for your TV.

1. Press the HOME button on the remote to display the XMB™.

2. The XMB™ consists of a horizontal “Media Category Bar” with icons for Settings, TV, and External Inputs.

3. Use the left/right arrow buttons to move along the horizontal bar and select a Media Category (e.g., Settings).

4. Once a category is selected, a vertical “Category Object Bar” appears, listing all available options for that category.

5. Use the up/down arrow buttons to move up and down the vertical list and highlight an item you wish to adjust (e.g., Picture).

6. Press the center button when the desired item is highlighted to enter its submenu.

7. In the submenu, use the arrow buttons to select different options and the center button to confirm your choices.

8. Press the RETURN button to go back one level, or press HOME to exit the menu completely.

The Parental Lock feature allows you to block programs based on content ratings. A password is required to set up blocking.

1. Press HOME, navigate to Settings, then select Parental Lock.

2. Password: Use the 0-9 buttons to enter a four-digit password. The first time you set it, you must re-enter it for confirmation.

3. Country: Select U.S.A. or Canada for the appropriate rating system.

4. Rating: You can choose preset levels like Child, Youth, or Young Adult to simplify selection. For more specific blocking, choose Custom.

5. Custom Ratings (U.S.A. Example):

• Movie Rating: Block movies based on G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17, X ratings.

• TV Rating: Block programs based on Age-Based Ratings (TV-Y, TV-Y7, TV-G, TV-PG, TV-14, TV-MA) and/or Content-Based Ratings (FV, D, L, S, V).

6. Unrated (U.S.A. only): Choose to Allow or Block all programs and movies that are broadcast without a rating.

7. Channel Block: Allows you to block specific channels entirely, regardless of program ratings.

To View Blocked Programs: When tuned to a blocked program or channel, press ENT and enter your password to view it temporarily.

If you lose your password: Select the Password settings and enter the master password: 4357. This will clear your previous password and allow you to set a new one.

If you have a “No Picture” issue, please try the following troubleshooting steps:

• Check the Power Saving settings in the General Settings menu to ensure it’s not set to Picture Off.

• Make sure the power cord is connected securely to both the TV and the wall outlet.

• Press the POWER button on the TV or remote to ensure the TV is turned on.

• Check your antenna or cable connections to make sure they are secure.

• If you are using an external video source (like a cable box or DVD player), check the connection between the device and the TV.

• Press the INPUT button on the remote control to ensure the correct video input is selected.

• Press the HOME button, navigate to the External Inputs list, and select your desired input source.

Picture quality is highly dependent on the signal content being sent to the TV. The demonstration content used in retail stores is typically a very high-quality 1080p source designed to showcase the TV’s maximum capability. The quality of your broadcast, cable, satellite, or DVD source may be lower.

To improve your picture:

• For the best possible picture, use high-definition (HD) sources like an HD cable/satellite box, a Blu-ray Disc player, or over-the-air HD broadcasts.

• Adjust the Picture Mode by pressing the PICTURE button on the remote. Modes like ‘Vivid’, ‘Standard’, and ‘Cinema’ offer different looks. You can also adjust individual settings like Brightness, Contrast, and Color in the Picture Settings menu.

If you can see a picture but cannot hear any sound, please check the following:

• Press the VOL + button to increase the volume.

• Press the MUTING button to make sure the TV is not muted. The word “Muting” should not appear on the screen.

• If you have headphones connected, disconnect them, as this mutes the TV’s main speakers.

• Go to the TV menu and navigate to Settings > Audio Options > Speakers and make sure it is set to TV Speakers. If it is set to Audio System, sound will not be output from the TV’s speakers.

Black bands on the screen are usually related to the aspect ratio of the program you are watching.

• Bands on the left and right sides: You are likely watching a program broadcast in a 4:3 aspect ratio (the squarer shape of older, standard-definition TV). Your 16:9 widescreen TV displays this with black bars on the sides to maintain the original picture shape without stretching it.

• Bands on the top and bottom: You are likely watching a movie or program filmed in an aspect ratio that is even wider than 16:9 (e.g., 2.35:1), which is common for theatrical movie releases. Your TV displays these programs with black bands to show the entire frame of the film.

You can press the WIDE button on your remote to cycle through screen modes like ‘Zoom’ or ‘Wide Zoom’ to fill the screen, but this may crop or stretch the picture.

If your remote control is not working, try these solutions:

• Check the batteries. Ensure they are inserted with the correct polarity (+ and -) or replace them with new batteries.

• Point the remote control directly at the remote control sensor located on the front of the TV.

• Make sure the sensor area on the TV is not blocked by any obstacles.

• Fluorescent lamps can sometimes interfere with remote control operation. Try turning off any nearby fluorescent lights.

• If you are trying to change channels, ensure the remote is in TV mode. Press the TV (FUNCTION) button once, and the TV indicator on the remote should light up.

To reset your TV to its original factory settings, follow this procedure. WARNING: This reset will clear all of your customized settings, including picture adjustments, channel lists, and the Parental Lock settings.

1. Make sure the TV is on.

2. On the remote control, press and hold the UP ARROW button.

3. While still holding the UP ARROW button, press the POWER button on the TV set itself (not the remote).

4. The TV will turn itself off, and then back on again. You can then release the UP ARROW button.

The TV will now be reset to its factory defaults, and you will need to go through the Initial Setup process again.

Sony strongly recommends taking measures to prevent the TV from toppling, which can result in property damage or serious injury. Here are the recommended measures:

General Prevention:

• Secure the TV to a wall and/or stand.

• Do not allow children to play or climb on furniture and TV sets.

• Avoid placing the TV on slippery, unstable, or uneven surfaces, or on furniture that can be used as steps (like a chest of drawers).

• Route all power cords and cables so they are not accessible to children.

Method 1: Securing the Stand

1. Ensure the TV stand can adequately support the TV’s weight.

2. Use two angle braces (not supplied) to secure the stand. Attach one side of each brace to a wall stud and the other side to the TV stand using appropriate hardware.

Method 2: Securing the TV to the Stand

1. Use an M6 x 10-12 mm anchor bolt (not supplied) screwed into the TV’s Table-Top stand.

2. Use a strong rope or chain to attach the bolt to the TV stand itself, ensuring there is no excess slack.

Method 3: Anchoring the TV to the Wall

1. Use two M6 x 7-10 mm anchor bolts (not supplied) screwed into the top-most wall-mount holes on the rear of the TV.

2. Attach a strong rope or chain to one of the M6 anchor bolts.

3. Secure a wall anchor (not supplied), strong enough to support the TV’s weight, into a wall stud.

4. Pass the rope or chain through the wall anchor and attach it to the other M6 anchor bolt on the TV.
