Please adhere to the following safety guidelines when using your SONY BRAVIA KDL-46XBR4:

General Safety:

• To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose this TV to rain or moisture.

• The TV shall not be exposed to dripping or splashing and no objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shall be placed on the TV.

• Operate the TV only on 120 – 240 V AC.

• If any liquid or solid object should fall inside the cabinet, unplug the TV immediately and have it checked by qualified service personnel before operating it further.

• If you will not be using the TV for several days, disconnect the power by pulling the plug itself. Never pull on the cord.

Power Cord and Outlet:

• To prevent electric shock, do not use the polarized AC plug with an extension cord, receptacle or other outlet unless the blades can be fully inserted to prevent blade exposure.

• Use only the original Sony AC power cord. Do not use it on any other equipment.

• Protect the power cord from being walked on, pinched, or damaged. Keep it away from heat sources.

• The TV set with a three-wire grounding type AC power cord plug must be connected to an AC power socket outlet with a protective earthing connection.

• Insert the plug fully into the outlet. If it is loose, it may cause arcing and result in a fire.

Installation and Environment:

• The TV should be installed near an easily accessible power outlet.

• To prevent internal heat buildup, do not block the ventilation openings.

• Do not install the TV in a hot or humid place, or in a place subject to excessive dust or mechanical vibration.

• To obtain the best picture, do not expose the screen to direct illumination or direct sunlight.

• If the TV is transported directly from a cold to a warm location, moisture may condense. Wait a few hours to let the moisture evaporate before turning on the TV.

Cleaning and Maintenance:

• Unplug the AC power cord when cleaning. Clean the cabinet with a dry soft cloth. To remove dust from the screen, wipe it gently with a soft cloth.

• Never use strong solvents such as thinner or benzine for cleaning.

• Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Do not attempt to service the TV yourself.

To avoid dropping the TV and causing serious injury, please follow these guidelines:

• Before carrying the TV, disconnect all cables.

• Carrying the large size TV requires at least two or three people.

• When you carry the TV, place your hand as illustrated in the manual and hold it securely. Do not put stress on the LCD panel and the frame around the screen.

• When lifting or moving the TV, hold it firmly from the bottom. Do not place your palm directly under the panel.

• When carrying the TV, do not subject it to shocks or vibration, or excessive force.

• Although the LCD screen is made with high-precision technology and has effective pixels of 99.99% or more, black dots or bright points of light (red, blue, or green) may appear constantly on the LCD screen. This is a structural property of the LCD panel and is not a malfunction.

• Uneven brightness may be observed when the TV is viewed in a dark ambient without an input source. This is normal and not a malfunction. Changing the Picture mode, Backlight setting, or enabling the Light Sensor can improve this condition.

• Do not expose the LCD screen surface to direct sunlight as it may damage the panel.

• Do not push or scratch the LCD screen, or place objects on top of the TV.

• If the TV is used in a cold place, a smear may occur in the picture or the picture may become dark. This does not indicate a failure and improves as the temperature rises.

• Ghosting may occur when still pictures are displayed continuously. It should disappear after a few moments.

• Avoid spraying insect repellent with volatile material on the screen.

• Avoid prolonged contact with rubber or plastic material.

• Do not throw anything at the TV. The screen glass may break by the impact.

This TV can be installed on a wall using a Wall-Mount Bracket (sold separately). Before mounting, the Table-Top Stand must be removed. Follow these steps:

1. Disconnect all the cables from the TV.

2. Start removing the screws behind the TV. Do not remove any other screws from the TV.

3. When screws are removed, lift the TV off the stand. Make sure that you carry out this task with at least two or three people. Do not attempt to lift the TV by yourself.

Important Notes:

• Do not remove the Table-Top Stand for any reason other than to wall-mount the TV.

• When using an electric screwdriver, set the torque setting to approximately 2 N·m {20 kgf·cm}.

• Be sure to store the removed screws and Table-Top Stand in a safe place away from small children.

• For bracket installation, refer to the supplied “Installing the Wall-Mount Bracket” guide. Sufficient expertise is required in installing this TV.

• For product protection and safety reasons, Sony strongly recommends using the Wall-Mount Bracket model designed for your TV and having the installation performed by a Sony dealer or licensed contractor.

The inputs and outputs are located on the left side and the rear of the TV.

Left Side:

• Headphone jack: Connects to your headphones. TV speakers are muted when headphones are connected.

• VIDEO IN 2 (VIDEO/R-AUDIO-L(MONO)): Connects to composite video and audio output jacks on devices like a camcorder or video game equipment.

• HDMI IN 2: Provides an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface for HDMI-equipped devices like a set-top box, DVD player, or Blu-ray Disc Player.

Rear Panel:

• PC IN (RGB/AUDIO): Connects to a personal computer’s video output using an HD15-HD15 cable.

• HDMI IN 1 / HDMI IN 3: Additional HDMI inputs for high-definition equipment. HDMI IN 1 also accepts DVI connections with an adapter and separate audio connection.

• REMOTE (KDL-40/46/52XBR5 only): Jack for receiving an external control signal.

• VIDEO IN 1 S VIDEO: Connects to the S VIDEO output of a VCR or other equipment for better picture quality than composite video.

• VIDEO IN 1/3 (VIDEO/L(MONO)-AUDIO-R): Composite video and audio jacks for A/V equipment.

• COMPONENT IN 1/2 (L-AUDIO-R): Connects to component video (YPBPR) and audio jacks for better picture quality than S VIDEO.

• DMex/ SERVICE: USB port for service only or for the optional BRAVIA external module (DMex).

• DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL): Connects to the optical audio input of your digital audio equipment.

• AUDIO OUT (VAR/FIX): Connects to the left and right audio input jacks of your analog audio equipment to listen to TV audio through a stereo system.

• AC IN: Connects the supplied AC power cord.

• VHF/UHF/CABLE: RF input that connects to your Cable or VHF/UHF antenna.

You can use the TV as a monitor for your PC. This TV can be connected to a PC with a VGA, DVI, or HDMI output.

For a standard VGA connection:

1. Connect the PC IN (RGB) jack on the rear of the TV to your PC’s video output using an HD15-HD15 cable with a ferrite core (not supplied).

2. Connect the PC AUDIO IN jack on the TV to your PC’s audio output using an audio cable with stereo mini plugs (not supplied).

After connecting, set the output signal from your PC according to the reference chart below. For the best picture quality, it is recommended to use the signals in bold with a 60 Hz vertical frequency.

The Initial Setup screen appears when you turn on the TV for the first time. It allows you to create a list of available channels from an antenna or direct cable connection.

1. When the TV is turned on for the first time, you will be prompted to select a language (English, Español, Français). Use the arrow buttons on the remote to highlight your choice and press the center button to select.

2. Follow the help text provided on the screen to run Auto Program. This will scan for all available analog and digital channels from your connected signal source.

3. If you are receiving channels from a cable box or satellite receiver and the VHF/UHF/CABLE input is not connected, select Skip to bypass the Auto Program.

4. When the Auto Program is completed, the TV will display how many analog and digital channels were found.

Notes:

• If you accidentally turn off the TV during the Initial Setup, it will restart from the beginning when turned back on.

• To run the Initial Setup or Auto Program again at a later time, navigate to the Settings menu in the XMB and select Initial Setup.

The XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) is a menu of BRAVIA features and input sources displayed on your TV screen. Follow these steps to navigate it:

1. Press the HOME button on your remote control to display the XMB™.

2. Press the left or right arrow buttons to select a Media Category icon from the horizontal bar. The categories are:

• Settings: Customize TV settings like Picture, Sound, and Timers.

• TV: Access available channels.

• External Inputs: Select connected devices like a DVD player, cable box, or PC.

3. Press the up or down arrow buttons to move within the vertical Category Object Bar to see the available features or inputs for the selected category.

4. Press the center button when your desired item is highlighted to select it.

5. Press the center button again or the arrow buttons to select or adjust the highlighted item.

6. Press RETURN to go back to the previous screen or HOME to exit the menu completely.

These features allow you to view two pictures simultaneously. P&P provides two windows side-by-side, while PIP provides a smaller window over the main picture (for PC input).

To Display the Sub Window:

1. Press OPTIONS on the remote to display the OPTIONS menu while watching a compatible input (TV channels, Video, Component, HDMI, or PC).

2. Use the up/down arrow buttons to highlight P&P or PIP, and press the center button to display the sub window.

To Change Inputs or Channels in a Window:

• Use the left/right arrow buttons to highlight the window you want to change.

• Press INPUT to select the input to watch, or press CH +/- to change channels. You can also use the 0-9 numeric buttons.

To Change the Window Size of P&P:

• Use the left/right arrow buttons to highlight the window, then press the up/down buttons to change the window size.

To Exit from P&P and PIP:

1. Press OPTIONS to display the menu.

2. Highlight Exit P&P or Exit PIP and press the center button. You can also press the RETURN button to exit.

Important Notes:

• The VHF/UHF/CABLE input must be connected to use the PIP feature.

• Closed Caption (CC) is not available for the PIP feature.

• To swap audio between windows in P&P mode, use the left/right arrow buttons to swap the highlight between windows.

You can customize the picture display by navigating to Settings > Picture in the XMB™ home menu. The following options are available:

• Picture Mode: Select from Vivid, Standard, Cinema, Photo, or Custom to suit the content and your preference.

• Reset: Resets the current Picture Mode settings to the factory defaults.

• Backlight: Brightens or darkens the backlight.

• Picture: Increases or decreases picture contrast.

• Brightness: Brightens or darkens the picture.

• Color: Increases or decreases color intensity.

• Hue: Increases or decreases the green tones.

• Color Temperature: Adjusts the white balance. Options are Cool (bluish), Neutral, Warm 1, and Warm 2 (reddish).

• Sharpness: Sharpens or softens the picture.

• Noise Reduction: Reduces the noise level of connected equipment and antenna/cable input.

• MPEG Noise Reduction: Reduces the mosaic effect in MPEG-compressed video.

• DRC Mode: Produces a high-resolution picture for high-density sources. (Not available for 1080p).

• DRC Palette: Allows you to customize the level of detail (Reality) and smoothness (Clarity). (Not available for 1080p).

• Advanced Settings: Provides access to further adjustments like Black Corrector, Advanced C.E., Gamma, Clear White, Color Space, Live Color, White Balance, Detail Enhancer, and Edge Enhancer.

To customize the audio output, navigate to Settings > Sound in the XMB™ home menu. The following options are available:

• Sound Mode: Select from Dynamic (enhanced treble and bass), Standard (for spoken dialog), or Custom (to store your preferred settings).

• Reset: Resets the current Sound Mode settings to the default values.

• Treble: Increases or decreases higher-pitched sounds.

• Bass: Increases or decreases lower-pitched sounds.

• Balance: Emphasizes left or right speaker balance.

• Surround: Select S-FORCE Front Surround for a virtual surround sound experience from the two front speakers, or Off for normal stereo.

• Sound Booster: Emphasizes high and low frequency sounds for a fuller sound with more depth. Select High or Low while in Custom Sound Mode.

• Steady Sound: Stabilizes the volume across all programs and commercials.

• Volume Offset: Adjusts the volume level of the current input relative to other inputs.

• Voice Zoom: Adjusts the clarity of human voices. Turn it up for clearer dialog or down to soften commentary in sports programs.

You can change the aspect ratio by pressing the WIDE button on the remote control repeatedly or by navigating to Settings > Screen in the XMB™ home menu and adjusting the Wide Mode setting. Available options depend on the input signal:

• Wide Zoom: Fills the screen with minimum distortion.

• Normal: Displays the picture in its original aspect ratio (e.g., 4:3 pictures will have black bars on the sides).

• Full: Enlarges the picture horizontally to fill the screen.

• Zoom: Enlarges the picture both horizontally and vertically to fill the screen while maintaining the aspect ratio.

You can also set Auto Wide to On to have the TV automatically change the Wide Mode setting based on the content.

The Parental Lock feature allows you to block programs based on content and rating levels. Navigate to Settings > Parental Lock in the XMB™ to access these settings.

Setting a Password:

• The first time you access this menu, you must use the 0-9 buttons on the remote to create a four-digit password. You will need to re-enter it to confirm. This password is required for any future access to Parental Lock settings.

Main Settings:

• Country: Select U.S.A. or Canada for the appropriate rating system.

• Rating: Choose a preset blocking level (Child, Youth, Young Adult) or select Custom to set ratings manually based on the charts provided in the manual.

• Channel Block: Allows you to block specific channels regardless of program ratings.

• Unrated (U.S.A. only): Allows or blocks all programs that do not have a rating.

To View a Blocked Program:

• When tuned to a blocked program or channel, press ENT and then enter your four-digit password to view it.

If you lose your password, select the Password setting and enter the master password: 4357. This will clear your previous password and allow you to set a new one.

Your remote can be programmed to control non-Sony video equipment. Follow these steps:

1. Find the three-digit code for your equipment’s brand in the Manufacturer’s Codes List in the TV’s operating instructions.

2. Press and hold the appropriate FUNCTION button (e.g., DVD, STB) and the INPUT button simultaneously until the FUNCTION button lights up.

3. While the button is lit, enter the three-digit code using the 0-9 buttons. You must do this within 10 seconds.

4. Press the green POWER button while the FUNCTION button is still lit.

5. If programmed correctly, the selected FUNCTION button will blink twice. If it blinks five times, the code was incorrect.

To Confirm Programming:

Try turning the device on and off by pressing the green POWER button. If it works, the programming is complete. If not, try the next code listed for that brand.

Note: Sony brand equipment like a Blu-ray Disc Player (code 101), DVD Player (code 751), and Satellite Receiver (code 801) are preset and do not require programming.

If there is no picture on your TV screen, try the following solutions:

• Check the Power Saving settings to ensure they are not causing the issue.

• Make sure the power cord is connected securely to both the TV and the wall outlet.

• Press the power button on the TV or remote to ensure the TV is turned on.

• Check your antenna or cable connections to ensure they are secure.

• If you cannot receive any channels, make sure the Cable setting in the Channel menu is correct for your signal source (On for cable, Off for antenna) and perform an Auto Program to scan for channels.

• If there is no picture from a connected video source (like a DVD player), check the connection between the device and the TV. Press the INPUT button on the remote to ensure the correct input is selected.

Various factors can affect picture quality. Here are some common issues and their solutions:

• Double images or ghosts: Check your antenna/cable connections. You may also need to check the antenna’s location and direction.

• Only snow and noise appear: Check if the antenna is broken, bent, or has reached the end of its serviceable life (typically 3-5 years).

• Dotted lines or stripes: Keep the TV away from sources of electrical noise like cars, motorcycles, or hair-dryers. Ensure your antenna cable is not bundled with other cords.

• No color/Dark picture/Incorrect color/Too bright: Press the PICTURE button on the remote to cycle through picture modes (Vivid, Standard, etc.). You can also adjust individual settings like Brightness, Color, and Hue in the Picture settings menu.

• Noisy picture: Make sure the antenna is connected using a 75-ohm coaxial cable and that the cable is undamaged and kept away from other connecting cords.

• Picture does not fill the screen: Change the Wide Mode or Display Area setting in the Screen menu to enlarge the picture.

If your remote control does not operate the TV or other equipment, please try these steps:

• Check the polarity of the batteries or replace them with new ones.

• Point the remote control directly at the remote control sensor located on the front of the TV.

• Keep the remote control sensor area clear from obstacles.

• Fluorescent lamps can interfere with remote control operation; try turning off any nearby fluorescent lights.

• If you are trying to change channels on the TV, first press the TV (FUNCTION) button once.

• If you are trying to control another device (like a cable box), press the appropriate FUNCTION button (e.g., STB) to switch the remote’s focus to that device.

• If the remote does not operate non-Sony equipment, you may need to re-program the remote with the correct code for that device.

To reset the TV and clear all of your customized settings, follow these steps:

1. Turn on the TV.

2. While holding down the UP ARROW button on the remote control, press the POWER button on the TV set itself (not the remote).

3. The TV will turn itself off, then back on again.

4. Release the UP ARROW button.

WARNING: This reset procedure will clear all of your customized settings, including Picture settings, Sound settings, Channel memory, and the Parental Lock setting. The TV will return to its original factory condition.

Sony strongly recommends taking measures to prevent the TV from toppling over, which can result in property damage or serious injury.

General Prevention:

• Secure the TV to a wall and/or stand.

• Do not allow children to play or climb on furniture and TV sets.

• Avoid placing or hanging items on the TV.

• Never install the TV on slippery, unstable, or uneven surfaces, or on furniture that can be used as steps.

• Route all power and connecting cables so they are not accessible to curious children.

Recommended Measures to Secure the TV:

1. Secure the stand for the TV:

• Make sure the TV stand can adequately support the weight of the TV.

• Use two angle braces (not supplied) to secure the stand. Attach one side of each brace to a wall stud and the other side to the TV stand.

2. Secure the TV to the stand:

• Use an M6 x 10-12 mm anchor bolt (not supplied) screwed into the TV’s Table-Top stand.

• Use a rope or chain, strong enough to support the TV’s weight, to attach the TV stand to the anchor bolt. Ensure there is no excess slack in the rope or chain.

3. Anchor the TV to the wall:

• Use two M6 x 7-10 mm anchor bolts (not supplied) screwed into the top-most wall-mount holes on the rear of the TV.

• Attach a rope or chain to one of the M6 anchor bolts.

• Attach a wall-anchor (strong enough to support the TV’s weight) to a wall stud.

• Pass the rope through the wall-anchor, then attach it to the other M6 anchor bolt on the TV.
