To ensure safe operation of your SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR6, please follow these precautions:

• To prevent electric shock and blade exposure, do not use the polarized AC plug with an extension cord, receptacle, or other outlet unless the blades can be fully inserted.

• Use only the specified Sony wall-mount brackets or TV stands. Using other products may cause instability and possibly result in injury.

• Sufficient expertise is required for installing the TV. Be sure to subcontract the installation to a Sony dealer or licensed contractor and pay adequate attention to safety during the installation.

The quality of the image on your SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR6 is determined by the quality of the signal it receives. To experience stunning HD detail, you need access to HD programming. Your TV can receive and display HD programming from:

• Over-the-air broadcasting via an HD-quality antenna

• HD cable subscription

• HD satellite subscription

• Blu-ray Disc™ player or other HD compatible external equipment

Contact your cable or satellite provider for information on upgrading to HD programming.

High-definition (HD) and standard-definition (SD) signals are transmitted with different aspect ratios (the width-to-height ratio of the image).

• 16:9 (high-definition) source: Most HDTV signals use a wide screen aspect ratio of 16:9. The 16:9 image fills your BRAVIA screen, maintaining a crisp, clear, vivid picture.

• 4:3 (standard-definition) source: Most SD signals use a boxy 4:3 aspect ratio. When a 4:3 image is displayed on an HDTV, you will see black bars on the sides. The picture quality may not be as sharp as with HD sources.

You can use the Wide Mode function of the TV to adjust the 4:3 image to fit the entire screen.

The XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) is an easy way to access the TV settings for customizing, making adjustments, viewing available TV channels, photo and music files, and selecting connected equipment. Press the HOME button on your remote control to display the XMB™.

From the horizontal Media Category Bar you can control:

• Settings: Adjust timer, picture, sound, screen and other options.

• Photo: View photo files via USB or compatible DLNA Certified™ equipment.

• Music: Listen to music files via USB or add music to a slideshow.

• TV Channels: Access TV Guide On Screen™ and available channels.

• External Inputs: Select cable, satellite, VCR, DVD players or other optional equipment. These can also be selected from the vertical Category Object Bar under the External Inputs icon.

To protect your property and avoid serious injury, follow these guidelines when carrying your SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR6:

• Before carrying the TV, disconnect all cables.

• Carrying the large size TV requires two or more people.

• When carrying the TV, place your hand as illustrated in the manual and hold it securely. Do not subject the TV to shocks, vibration, or excessive force.

• Lift the TV by placing your palm directly underneath the panel but do not put stress on the LCD panel.

• Do not lift the TV from the bottom center.

Follow these steps to place your SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR6 on a Table-Top Stand:

1. Remove the Table-Top Stand and screws from the carton. The screws are in the accessory bag. For product protection and safety, Sony strongly recommends using the provided screws.

2. Place the Table-Top Stand on a level and stable surface.

3. Gently slide the TV unit onto the neck of the Table-Top Stand and align the screw holes.

4. Use the supplied screws to attach the TV unit to the Table-Top Stand. If using an electric screwdriver, set the torque to approximately 1.5 N·m (15 Kgf·cm).

Cautions:

• Do not put stress on the LCD panel or the frame around the screen.

• Be careful not to pinch your hands or the AC power cord when you install the TV unit to the Table-Top Stand.

Ensure your SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR6 has adequate air circulation. Allow enough space around the TV as shown below. Inadequate air circulation can lead to overheating and may cause damage or a fire. Avoid operating the TV at temperatures below 41°F (5°C).

Installed with stand:

• Leave at least 11 7/8 inches (30 cm) above the TV.

• Leave at least 4 inches (10 cm) on the left and right sides.

• Leave at least 2 3/8 inches (6 cm) behind the TV.

Installed on the wall:

• Leave at least 11 7/8 inches (30 cm) above the TV.

• Leave at least 4 inches (10 cm) on the left, right, and bottom of the TV.

Never install the TV in a way that blocks air circulation, such as flush against a wall.

Consider the following for the best picture quality:

• Do not expose the screen to direct illumination or sunlight.

• Use spot lighting directed down from the ceiling or cover windows that face the screen with opaque drapery.

• Install the TV in a room where the floor and walls are not of a reflective material.

• When moving the TV from a cold area to a warm one, moisture condensation may cause blurriness or poor color. Wait a few hours for the moisture to evaporate before powering on.

Sony strongly recommends taking measures to prevent the TV from toppling, which can result in property damage, serious bodily injury, or even death.

General Prevention:

• Secure the TV to a wall and/or stand.

• Do not allow children to play or climb on furniture and TV sets.

• Avoid placing or hanging items on the TV.

• Never install the TV on slippery, unstable, or uneven surfaces, or on furniture that can be used as steps (e.g., a chest of drawers).

• Install the TV where it cannot be pulled, pushed, or knocked over.

• Route all AC power cords and connecting cables so they are not accessible to curious children.

Securing the TV to a Stand and Wall:

1. Secure the Stand: Use two angle braces (not supplied) to secure the TV stand to the wall stud.

2. Secure the TV to the Stand: Use an M6 x 10-12 mm anchor bolt (not supplied) screwed into the TV’s Table-Top Stand screw hole and a screw to attach it to the TV stand.

3. Anchor the TV to the Wall:

• Use two M6 × 10-12 mm anchor bolts (not supplied) screwed into the top-most wall-mount holes on the rear of the TV.

• Use a rope or chain (not supplied) attached to one M6 anchor bolt.

• Use a wall-anchor (not supplied) attached to a wall stud, strong enough to support the TV’s weight.

• Pass the rope through the wall-anchor and attach it to the other M6 anchor bolt. Ensure there is no excess slack.

Securing the TV to the stand without securing the stand to the wall provides minimum protection. For further protection, follow all three recommended measures.

Connect your 75-ohm coaxial cable from your wall or antenna directly to the CABLE/ANTENNA input on the rear of the TV. It is strongly recommended to use a 75-ohm coaxial cable for optimum picture quality.

If you are connecting both a cable service and an over-the-air antenna, use an optional A-B RF switch (not supplied) to switch between the two signal sources connected to the CABLE/ANTENNA input.

After connecting, be sure to set the Signal Type setting to Cable or Antenna in the Channel settings to match your input source.

For the best possible picture, connect your HD cable or satellite box using one of the following methods:

• HDMI Connection (Best Quality): Connect an HDMI cable from the HDMI OUT on your box to one of the HDMI IN jacks (1, 2, 3, or 4) on the TV.

• DVI Connection: If your box has a DVI output, connect a DVI-to-HDMI cable or adapter from the DVI OUT on your box to HDMI IN 4 on the TV. Then, connect an audio cable from the audio out on your box to the AUDIO IN (L/R) jacks next to HDMI IN 4.

• Component Connection (Good Quality): Connect a component video cable (Y, PB, PR) from the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT on your box to a COMPONENT IN (1 or 2) on the TV. Also, connect a stereo audio cable from the audio out on your box to the corresponding AUDIO (L/R) jacks.

In all cases, also connect the CATV/Satellite antenna cable to the input on your box.

To use your SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR6 as a PC monitor, connect an HD15-HD15 cable (analog RGB) from your computer’s video output to the PC IN jack on the TV. For audio, connect a stereo mini plug audio cable from your PC’s audio output to the AUDIO jack next to the PC IN port.

After connecting, set the output signal from your PC to a supported resolution. The TV will automatically enter standby mode if no signal is received from the PC for more than 30 seconds.

PC Input Signal Reference Chart:

*For the best picture quality, it is recommended to use the signals (boldfaced) with a 60 Hz vertical frequency.

The Initial Setup screen appears when you turn on the SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR6 for the first time. Follow these steps:

1. Complete all your cable connections before beginning.

2. On the first screen, select your preferred language (English, Español, Français) using the ▲/▼ buttons and press the center button (⊕) to continue.

3. Follow the on-screen help text to run Auto Program. This will scan for all available channels from the signal source connected to the CABLE/ANTENNA input. If you receive channels from a cable box or satellite receiver via HDMI or Component, you can skip Auto Program.

4. Set the current date and time.

5. Once Initial Setup is complete, the TV will prompt you to set up the TV Guide On Screen service. Follow the on-screen instructions. It may take up to 24 hours for the TV to fully receive the program listing information while it is turned off.

To run Initial Setup again later, select Initial Setup from the Settings -> General Setup menu in the XMB™.

For effective remote control operation:

• Point your remote control directly at the IR sensor located on the front of your TV.

• Ensure no objects are blocking the path between the remote control and the IR sensor.

• Fluorescent lamps can interfere with the remote control; try turning them off if you experience issues.

• If you have problems, reinsert or replace the two size AA batteries (supplied), matching the + and – symbols to the diagram inside the battery compartment.

Follow these steps to program your TV remote control:

1. Find the five-digit code that corresponds to your equipment from the manufacturer’s code list in the user manual. If more than one code is provided, try the first one.

2. Press and hold the desired FUNCTION button (e.g., DVD, AMP, or STB) simultaneously with the INPUT button and release. The FUNCTION button will blink, indicating it is in programming mode for about 30 seconds.

3. While the FUNCTION button is lit, enter the five-digit code using the 0-9 buttons.

4. Press ⊕ or ENT to confirm the code. If successful, the FUNCTION button blinks twice. If not, it blinks five times.

To confirm, try turning the equipment on and off with the green POWER button on the remote. If it doesn’t work, try the next code listed for that manufacturer.

To reset the remote control to its factory default settings, press the SOUND, TV POWER, and ⊕ (center) buttons simultaneously. The FUNCTION buttons will blink red simultaneously when the reset is successful.

The Favorites feature allows you to manage your preferred TV channels, External Inputs, Photo content, Music content, and Background TV themes for easy access.

• Displaying Favorites: Press the FAVORITES button on the remote. Press it again to exit.

• Navigating Favorites: Use the ◄/► buttons to move between saved selections in a carousel-like fashion. When the “Recently viewed channels and inputs” are highlighted, use the ▲/▼ buttons to toggle through them.

• Adding to Favorites:

1. From the XMB™, select a Photo, Music, TV, or External Inputs icon.

2. Locate the item you wish to add and press OPTIONS.

3. Highlight Add to Favorites and press ⊕.

• Removing from Favorites:

1. Press FAVORITES, then select an item to be removed and press OPTIONS.

2. Highlight Remove from Favorites and press ⊕.

• Clearing Recently Viewed: To clear the recently viewed list, highlight the list in Favorites, press OPTIONS, and select Clear Recently Viewed.

The SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR6 allows easy access to JPEG photos and MP3 music files from compatible Sony digital cameras and MICRO VAULT™ USB Flash Drives.

Using USB Equipment:

1. With the TV powered off, gently insert your USB equipment into the USB port on the side TV panel.

2. Power on the TV. The TV will display “USB device detected”.

3. Press the HOME button to open the XMB™.

4. Navigate to the Photo or Music category icon.

5. Select the USB icon to browse and view your files.

Removing USB Equipment:

Power off the TV and then slide the USB equipment out of the USB port.

When viewing a list of photos (List View), press the OPTIONS button to access the following settings:

The TV Guide On Screen provides up to two days of TV programming information for cable service (without a box) or over-the-air antenna signals. Ensure you have completed the Initial Setup to use this service.

The BRAVIA Sync function allows your SONY BRAVIA KDL-40XBR6 to communicate with other Sony equipment supporting the Control for HDMI function. To use it, connect the equipment with an HDMI cable that bears the HDMI logo.

You must set up the Control for HDMI function in the HDMI Settings menu for the TV to communicate with other enabled equipment.

Available operations include:

• Automatically turning off the connected equipment when you turn off the TV.

• Automatically turning on the TV and selecting the correct HDMI input when you use One-Touch-Play on the connected equipment.

• Automatically turning on equipment when it’s selected from the External Inputs list in the XMB™.

• With a compatible Sony A/V receiver, you can also turn on the receiver with the TV, automatically switch audio to the receiver’s speakers, and adjust the receiver’s volume with the TV remote.

P&P provides two windows side-by-side, while PIP provides a small window for a TV channel over a PC input signal. The CABLE/ANTENNA input must be connected to use these features.

To Enter P&P and PIP:

1. Press OPTIONS while watching a compatible input (TV channels, Video, Component, HDMI, DMPORT, or PC).

2. Use the ▲/▼ buttons to highlight P&P or PIP and press ⊕.

Supported Inputs:

• P&P: The main window can be Video 1/2/3, Component 1/2, HDMI 1/2/3/4 (except PC timing), or DMPORT. The sub window is always a TV channel from the CABLE/ANTENNA input.

• PIP: The main window can be PC or HDMI (PC timing). The sub window is always a TV channel from the CABLE/ANTENNA input.

To Change Inputs/Channels:

• In P&P mode, use ◄/► to highlight a window. In the main window, press INPUT to change the source. In the sub window, use CH+/- to change the channel.

• In PIP mode, you can change the channel of the sub window by pressing CH+/-.

To Exit from P&P and PIP:

Press OPTIONS, highlight Exit P&P or Exit PIP, and press ⊕.

1. Press the HOME button on your remote to display the XMB™.

2. Press ◄/► to select a Media Category icon (e.g., Settings, Photo, Music, TV, External Inputs).

3. Press ▲/▼ to move up and down within the vertical list of features for that category (the Category Object Bar).

4. Press ⊕ when the desired item is highlighted to select it.

5. Press ◄/► or ▲/▼ to select or adjust the highlighted item’s value.

6. Press RETURN to go back one step, or HOME to exit the menu completely.

The main settings categories available under the Settings icon in the XMB™ are:

• Product Support: View contact and TV information, run signal diagnostics, and perform software updates.

• Clock/Timers: Set the current time, on/off timers, and sleep timer.

• Picture: Adjust picture settings like mode, backlight, brightness, color, and advanced settings like Motion Enhancer and CineMotion.

• Sound: Adjust sound settings like mode, treble, bass, surround, and other audio features.

• Screen: Control the aspect ratio (Wide Mode), screen position, and display area.

• Channel: Run Auto Program, manage channel lists (Show/Hide), and edit channel labels.

• Closed Captions (CC): Configure closed captioning display options.

• Parental Lock: Block programs based on ratings and content. A password is required.

• External Inputs: Customize input labels and behavior of channel tuning keys.

• HDMI Settings: Configure Control for HDMI (BRAVIA Sync) functions.

• Network: Configure settings for a wired network connection.

• General Setup: Set language, info banner display, and other general TV functions.

• Initial Setup: Run the initial setup process again to scan for channels.

WARNING: This reset will clear all of your customized settings, including the Parental Lock setting.

To reset the TV to factory settings:

1. Turn on the TV.

2. While holding down the ▲ (up arrow) button on the remote control, press the POWER button on the TV set itself (not the remote).

3. The TV will turn itself off, then back on again.

4. Release the ▲ button.

If there is no picture, try the following solutions:

• Check the Power Saving settings and ensure Picture Off is not selected.

• Make sure the power cord is connected securely.

• Turn on the power of the TV.

• Check cable/antenna connections.

• Make sure the Signal Type setting is correct for your TV signal source.

• If locked to one channel, perform Auto Program to add receivable channels that are not present in the TV’s memory.

• If there is no picture from a specific video source, check the connection to that equipment, press INPUT to select it, or use the HOME menu to select it from the External Inputs list.

If you are experiencing poor picture quality, try these steps:

• General Poor Quality: Picture quality depends on the signal content. Many HD channels and content are actually upscaled versions of standard-definition broadcasts. The picture is affected by the quality of the signal received.

• Double Images or Ghosts: Check cable/antenna connections and the antenna location/direction. Set the Motion Enhancer to Standard or Off.

• Snow and Noise: Check if the antenna is broken, bent, or has reached the end of its serviceable life (3-5 years in normal use). Keep the TV away from noise sources like cars or hair-dryers.

• No Color / Dark Picture / Incorrect Color: Press PICTURE to select the desired Picture Mode. Adjust options in the Picture settings. If you set Power Saving to Low or High, it will enhance the black level.

• Blurry Picture / Poor Color: Transporting the TV from a cold to a warm location can cause moisture condensation. Turn off your TV and wait a few hours before powering on again.

• Black Bands on Screen: Some widescreen programs are filmed in aspect ratios greater than 16:9, resulting in black bars. 4:3 programs will have bars on the sides. You can manually change the Wide Mode to Wide Zoom, H Stretch or Zoom to fill the screen.

If you are experiencing no sound or noisy sound, try these solutions:

• Check the volume control. Press MUTING or VOL + to ensure “Muting” is not displayed.

• In the Sound settings, set Speakers to TV Speakers. If set to Audio System, sound will not output from the TV’s speakers.

• If using an HDMI input with Super Audio CD or DVD-Audio, the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (Optical) may not provide a signal.

• For audio noise, ensure the antenna is connected with a 75-ohm coaxial cable and keep it away from other connecting cords.

• For no audio with a Home Theater System, press THEATER if it’s a BRAVIA Sync system. Set Speakers to Audio System and Audio Out to Fixed in the Sound settings.

If the remote control is not working, try the following steps:

• To determine if the problem is with the remote, press a button on the TV set itself. If the TV responds, the issue is with the remote.

• Check the polarity of the batteries or replace the batteries.

• Point the remote control at the remote control sensor located at the front of the TV.

• Keep the remote control sensor area clear from obstacles.

• Fluorescent lamps can interfere with remote operation; try turning off the fluorescent lamps.
