What is the anti-condensation switch on the NAPOLEON L38P and how do I use it?
The NAPOLEON L38P has an option to change from an electronic intermittent pilot ignition (IPI) to a standing pilot for cold climates. This is controlled by the anti-condensation control (standing pilot) switch, located to the left of the control panel.
• To activate standing pilot, flip the switch up.
• To return to intermittent pilot, flip the switch down.
Turning the switch on (standing pilot) allows the pilot flame to burn continuously. This mode minimizes condensation on the inside of the glass when the main burner is first turned on and helps the appliance and vent system stabilize more quickly in colder months. During warmer months, the switch can be turned off to minimize fuel consumption.

How do I adjust the venturi (air shutter) on my NAPOLEON L38P?
The NAPOLEON L38P is equipped with an externally adjustable air shutter. Adjustments must be done with the door, burner, and all media installed. Operate the appliance to verify the adjustment.
• To open the shutter, pull the adjustment rod away from the appliance.
• To close the shutter, push the rod towards the appliance.
It is recommended to adjust the shutter in 1/8″ increments as small adjustments can have a drastic effect on the flame appearance.
Warning:
• Air shutter adjustment must be done by a qualified installer.
• Closing the air shutter will cause a more yellow flame but can lead to carbonization. Opening the shutter will cause a more blue flame but can cause flame lifting from the burner ports. Allow 15 to 30 minutes for the flame color to be established after an adjustment.
What should the flames look like on my NAPOLEON L38P fireplace?
It is important to periodically perform a visual check of the pilot and burner flames. The pilot flame should be 3/8″ – 1/2″ (9.5mm – 12.7mm) and must envelop the upper 3/8″ to 1/2″ of the flame sensor.
The main burner flame should have a mix of peaks and valleys. If any flames appear abnormal, call a service person.
What annual maintenance is required for the NAPOLEON L38P fireplace?
This appliance and its venting system should be inspected at least annually by a qualified service person. The appliance area must be kept clear and free of combustible materials, gasoline, or other flammable vapors and liquids. The flow of combustion and ventilation air must not be obstructed. The following checks should be performed:
A. To clean the burner and pilot assembly, remove the media (glass) to expose them.
B. Keep the control compartment, media, burner, and air shutter opening clean by vacuuming or brushing at least once a year.
C. Check that all burner ports are burning and clean out any that are not.
D. Check that the pilot flame reaches the sensor and is large enough to engulf it.
E. Replace the cleaned media. Improper positioning may cause carbon which can be distributed inside the firebox and on exterior surfaces.
F. Check that the main burner ignites completely on all openings when turned on. A 5 to 10 second light-up period is satisfactory.
G. Check the door gaskets for damage and replace if necessary.
H. If the vent air intake system is disassembled, re-install and re-seal it per the initial installation instructions.
I. Clean the safety barrier with a vacuum brush attachment to remove excessive lint/dust.
J. Ensure the relief system performs effectively. Check that the gasket is not worn or damaged and replace if necessary.
How do I care for the glass on my NAPOLEON L38P fireplace?
Warning: Do not clean glass when hot! Do not use abrasive cleaners.
Buff lightly with a clean, dry, soft cloth to remove dust or fingerprints. Clean both sides of the glass after the first 4 hours of operation with a recommended fireplace glass cleaner. Thereafter, clean as required. If the glass is not kept clean, permanent discoloration or blemishes may result.
Note: Glass cleaners with ammonia will discolor the glass. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners.
If the glass should ever crack or break while the fire is burning, do not open the door until the fire is out. Do not operate the appliance until the glass has been replaced. Do not use substitute materials.
How do I care for the plated parts on my NAPOLEON L38P?
If your NAPOLEON L38P is equipped with plated parts, you must clean fingerprints or other marks from the plated surfaces before operating it for the first time. Use a glass cleaner or vinegar and a towel to clean. If not cleaned properly before first use, the marks can cause permanent blemishes on the plating. After the plating is cured, fingerprints and oils will not affect the finish, and little maintenance is required; just wipe clean as needed. Prolonged high-temperature burning with the door ajar may cause discoloration on plated parts.
The main burner flame on my NAPOLEON L38P is blue, lazy, and transparent. What should I do?
This may be caused by a blockage in the vent. You should remove the blockage. In very cold conditions, ice buildup may occur on the terminal and should be removed. To minimize this from reoccurring, the vent lengths that pass through unheated spaces (attics, garages, crawl spaces) should be wrapped with an insulated mylar sleeve.
Why are the flames on my NAPOLEON L38P too large or small, or causing carboning?
This could be due to the appliance being over-fired or under-fired, or an improperly adjusted air shutter. A qualified technician should check the pressure readings to ensure they are correct. The air shutter should be returned to its specified opening as per the “venturi adjustments” section in the installation manual. Also, ensure the air shutter opening is free of lint or other obstructions.
Why is carbon depositing on the glass, media, or combustion chamber of my NAPOLEON L38P?
This can be caused by a few issues:
• The air shutter is improperly adjusted or blocked. A technician should adjust it to the specified opening and ensure it’s free of obstructions.
• The flame is impinging on the glass or media. Ensure the media is positioned correctly in the appliance.
• Check the input rate: a technician should check the manifold pressure and orifice size.
• Ensure door gaskets are not broken or missing and the seal is tight.
Why is there a white/grey film on the glass of my NAPOLEON L38P?
This film is sulphur from the fuel being deposited on the surfaces. Clean the glass with a recommended gas fireplace glass cleaner. DO NOT CLEAN GLASS WHEN HOT. If deposits are not cleaned off regularly, the glass may become permanently marked.
What should I do if I smell exhaust fumes or get headaches when using my NAPOLEON L38P?
This indicates the appliance is spilling exhaust. Check the door seal for a tight fit and inspect for any exhaust damage. Ensure the venting is installed correctly. This can also be caused by the room being in a negative pressure; increase the fresh air supply to the room.
The pilot on my NAPOLEON L38P will not light and makes noise with no spark. What is the cause?
This could be due to a wiring issue (short, loose, or damaged connection). A technician should verify the thermocouple/sensor is clean, the wiring is undamaged, and all connections are tight and not grounding out to any metal. It could also be a poor ground, which a technician needs to verify.
The pilot on my NAPOLEON L38P sparks but will not light. What is wrong?
Several issues could cause this:
• Gas Supply: Verify the incoming gas line ball valve is “open” and that the inlet pressure is within acceptable limits (not to exceed 14″ W.C. or 34.9mb).
• Out of Propane: If using propane, fill the tank.
• Air in Pilot Line: Repeat the ignition process several times or have a technician purge the pilot supply line.
• Incorrect Wiring/Grounding: A technician needs to ensure correct polarity of wiring and verify the pilot assembly/valve are properly grounded.
• Dirty Pilot/Sensor: The pilot or sensor rod may be dirty, painted, or damaged. Clean the sensor rod with a green Scotch-Brite™ pad.
• Receiver (if equipped): The receiver may need to be reset. Hold the reset button on the receiver and wait for 2 beeps. Release after the second beep. Press the small flame button on the remote within 20 seconds; you will hear another beep confirming a successful reset.
• Valve: The valve may need to be checked and replaced by a technician.
The burner on my NAPOLEON L38P continues to spark and the pilot lights, but the main burner won’t light. What should I check?
This is often caused by a short or loose connection in the sensor rod, or by dirty, painted, or damaged pilot assembly components. A service technician should verify all connections from the pilot assembly are tight and not grounding out to any metal. They should also clean the sensor rod, pilot hood, ignitor, and flame sensor with a green Scotch-Brite™ pad to remove any contamination.
The burner on my NAPOLEON L38P comes on even when the remote wall switch is in the “off” position. Why?
This may be caused by the wall switch being mounted upside down, a grounding issue with the switch or wire, or a faulty wire. Try reversing the switch. If that does not work, have a technician check for a ground (short) and repair it or replace the faulty wire.
My remote or receiver for the NAPOLEON L38P is not functioning properly. What are some troubleshooting steps?
Here are some common issues and solutions:
• Remote is locked out (controls lights but no flame): Reset by turning the power source off and then on. If backup batteries are installed, they must also be removed to re-program.
• Low Battery: Replace the batteries in the receiver or remote.
• Error with Synchronizing: Reset the receiver and remote.
• Remote too far away: Move the remote closer to the receiver.
• Bent wire connector pins: Have a technician straighten the pins.
• Damaged valve wiring: A technician needs to replace the valve.
