How do I use the anti-condensation switch on my NAPOLEON L38N?

The NAPOLEON L38N has an option to change from an electronic intermittent pilot ignition (IPI) to a standing pilot for cold climates. The anti-condensation control (standing pilot) switch is located to the left of the control panel. Using your finger, flip the switch up for standing pilot or down for intermittent pilot ignition.

Turning the ACS switch on will allow the pilot flame to burn continuously. This mode minimizes condensation on the inside of the glass when the main burner is first turned on and helps the appliance and vent system stabilize more quickly in colder months.

During warmer months, the ACS switch can be turned off to minimize fuel consumption.

How do I adjust the venturi (air shutter) on the NAPOLEON L38N?

The NAPOLEON L38N is equipped with an externally adjustable air shutter. Any adjustments must be done with the door installed, including the burner and all media. To open or close the shutter, pull the adjustment rod away from the appliance or push it towards the appliance, respectively. It is recommended to adjust the shutter in 1/8″ increments.

Closing the air shutter will cause a more yellow flame but can lead to carbonization. Opening the air shutter will cause a more blue flame but can cause flame lifting from the burner ports. Allow 15 to 30 minutes for the flame color to be established after an adjustment.

How do I adjust the pilot burner and check pressure readings on my NAPOLEON L38N?

Pilot Adjustment:

Adjust the pilot screw to provide a properly sized flame. Turn it in a clockwise direction to reduce the gas flow.

Check Pressure Readings:

Inlet pressure can be checked by turning screw (A) counter-clockwise 2 or 3 turns and then placing a pressure gauge tubing over the test point. Check pressure with the main burner operating on “HI”.

Outlet pressure can be checked the same way using screw (B). Check pressure with the main burner operating on “HI”.

After taking pressure readings, be sure to turn screws clockwise firmly to reseal. Do not overtorque. Leak test with a soap and water solution.

The following are the pressure specifications:

Do not clean the glass when it is hot and do not use abrasive cleaners. Buff lightly with a clean, dry, soft cloth to remove dust or fingerprints. Clean both sides of the glass after the first 4 hours of operation with a recommended fireplace glass cleaner. Thereafter, clean as required. If the glass is not kept clean, permanent discoloration or blemishes may result. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners as they will discolor the glass.

If the glass should ever crack or break while the fire is burning, do not open the door until the fire is out. Do not operate the appliance until the glass has been replaced. Do not use substitute materials.

What should I do if the main burner flame on my NAPOLEON L38N is blue, lazy, and transparent?

This could be caused by a blockage in the vent or incorrect installation. First, check for and remove any blockage. In very cold conditions, ice buildup may occur on the terminal and should be removed. To minimize this, vent lengths passing through unheated spaces (attics, garages) should be wrapped with an insulated mylar sleeve. If there is no blockage, refer to the “VENTING” section of your manual to ensure the installation is correct.

Why are the flames on my NAPOLEON L38N too large or too small, causing carboning?

This indicates the appliance is over-fired or under-fired. You should check the gas pressure readings as described in the “pilot burner adjustment” section of your manual to ensure they are within the specified limits for your gas type (Natural Gas or Propane).

Why is carbon depositing on the glass, logs, or media of my NAPOLEON L38N?

This can be caused by several issues:

Air shutter improperly adjusted: Return the air shutter to the specified opening as described in the “venturi adjustments” section of the manual.

Air shutter is blocked: Ensure the air shutter opening is free of lint or other obstructions.

Flame impingement: Ensure the media is positioned correctly in the appliance. Open the air shutter to increase primary air. Check the input rate by verifying the manifold pressure and orifice size against the rating plate. Also, ensure the door gaskets are not broken and the seal is tight, and that vent liners are free of holes and well-sealed.

Why is there a white/grey film forming on the glass of my NAPOLEON L38N?

This is caused by sulphur from the fuel being deposited on the surfaces. Clean the glass with a recommended gas fireplace glass cleaner. DO NOT clean the glass when it is hot. If these deposits are not cleaned off regularly, the glass may become permanently marked.

What should I do if I smell exhaust fumes or get headaches when using my NAPOLEON L38N?

This indicates the appliance is spilling exhaust. Check the door seal for damage. Check the exhaust system for damage. Verify that the venting is installed correctly. Your room may also be in a negative pressure state; increase the supply of fresh air to the room.

Why won’t the pilot light on my NAPOLEON L38N, even though it makes noise but has no spark?

This could be due to several issues:

Wiring: There may be a short, loose, or damaged connection. Verify the thermocouple/sensor is clean and wiring is undamaged. Check that connections are tight and not grounding out to any metal.

No signal from remote: Reprogram the receiver code or replace the receiver.

Poor grounding: Verify the valve and pilot assembly are properly grounded.

Improper switch wiring: Troubleshoot the system with a simple on/off switch.

Dirty pilot/sensor: Clean the sensor rod with a green Scotch-Brite™ pad to remove any contamination.

The pilot on my NAPOLEON L38N sparks but will not light. What is the cause?

Please check the following:

Gas Supply: Verify that the incoming gas line ball valve is “open” and that the inlet pressure reading is within acceptable limits (must not exceed 14″ W.C. or 34.9mb).

Out of Propane: If you use propane, fill the tank.

Air in Gas Line: Repeat the ignition process several times or purge the pilot supply line.

Incorrect Wiring/Grounding: Ensure the correct polarity of thermocouple wiring and verify the pilot assembly/valve are properly grounded.

Receiver Issue (if equipped): Reset the program by holding the reset button on the receiver for 2 beeps. Release after the second beep and press the small flame button on the remote within 20 seconds. If this fails, replace the receiver.

Valve Issue: Check the valve and replace if necessary. Do not overtighten the thermocouple.

The burner on my NAPOLEON L38N continues to spark and the pilot lights, but the main burner does not light. What is wrong?

This is likely caused by a short or loose connection in the sensor rod, or dirty/damaged pilot assembly components. Verify all connections from the pilot assembly are tight and not grounding out to any metal. Clean the sensor rod, pilot hood, ignitor, or flame sensor with a green Scotch-Brite™ pad to remove any contamination.

Why does the burner on my NAPOLEON L38N come on when the remote wall switch is in the “off” position?

The wall switch may be mounted upside down; reverse it. Alternatively, the remote wall switch and/or its wire may be grounding; check for a ground (short) and repair or replace the wire. If the wire is faulty, it will need to be replaced.

Why isn’t my remote and/or receiver for the NAPOLEON L38N functioning properly?

Here are several potential issues and solutions:

Remote controls lights but no spark/flame (locked out): Reset by turning the power source off and then on. If backup batteries are installed, they must also be removed to reprogram.

Low battery: Replace the batteries in the receiver or remote.

Synchronization error: Reset the receiver and remote.

Remote too far from receiver: Move the remote closer.

Bent wire connector pins: Straighten the pins.

Damaged valve wiring: Replace the valve.

The pilot on my NAPOLEON L38N won’t light and there’s no spark, but the lights and blower operate. What should I do?

The ignition box has likely been locked out. You can choose one of the following methods to reset the system:

1. Turn off the power supply and remove batteries from the back-up battery pack (if used).

2. To reset the DFC Board when the LED is blinking 3 times, press the on/off button on the transmitter to turn the system off. After about 2 seconds, press the on/off button again. The DFC Board will reset and the ignition sequence will start.

3. Alternatively, when the LED is blinking 3 times, you can reset by cycling the flame. In manual flame control mode, use the down arrow button to reduce the flame to off. Wait approximately 2 seconds and press the up arrow button to restart the ignition sequence.

Note: Starting from off, when you press the ‘on’ button on the transmitter, the ignition board will start to spark after about 4 seconds. The first ignition attempt will last for about 60 seconds. If there is no flame, it will wait 35 seconds and try again for another 60 seconds. If it still fails, the board will go into lock out.
