What is the anti-condensation switch on the NAPOLEON L38N2 and how do I use it?

Your NAPOLEON L38N2 has an option to change from an electronic intermittent pilot ignition (IPI) to a standing pilot for cold climates. This is controlled by the anti-condensation control (ACS) switch, located to the left of the control panel.

• To activate standing pilot mode, flip the switch up.

• To return to intermittent pilot mode, flip the switch down.

Turning the ACS switch on (standing pilot) will allow the pilot flame to burn continuously. This mode minimizes condensation on the inside of the glass when the main burner first turns on and helps the appliance and vent system stabilize more quickly in colder months. During warmer months, the ACS switch can be turned off to minimize fuel consumption.

How do I remove the firebox glass door on my NAPOLEON L38N2?

E. While keeping one hand on the glass door, tilt the top of the door forwards 90 degrees, then lift it up and out of the door latches.

How do I install or remove the glass media in my NAPOLEON L38N2?

Before installation, clean the glass media with mild dish soap, drain, rinse thoroughly, and dry it completely.

To install:

Evenly spread the glass media onto the media tray. Ensure no glass media falls into the pilot opening. Do not use more media than what was supplied with the appliance and do not place media directly onto the burner or pilot opening.

To remove:

Using a vacuum cleaner with a clean bag inserted, vacuum out the glass media from the media tray.

How should I care for the glass on my NAPOLEON L38N2?

• Do not clean the glass when it is hot. Do not use abrasive cleaners.

• Buff lightly with a clean, dry, soft cloth to remove dust or fingerprints.

• Clean both sides of the glass after the first 4 hours of operation with a recommended fireplace glass cleaner. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners as they will discolor the glass.

• Thereafter, clean as required. If the glass is not kept clean, permanent discoloration or blemishes may result.

• Do not operate the appliance with broken glass. If the glass cracks or breaks while the fire is burning, do not open the door until the fire is out. Have the glass replaced by an authorized dealer.

What maintenance should be performed annually on my NAPOLEON L38N2?

Annual maintenance should be performed by a qualified service technician and should include the following checks:

A. To properly clean the burner and pilot, remove the media (glass, logs, rocks) to expose the assemblies.

B. Keep the control compartment, media, burner, and air shutter opening clean by vacuuming or brushing at least once a year.

C. Check that all burner ports are burning and clean any that are not.

D. Check that the pilot flame reaches the sensor and is large enough to engulf the flame sensor/thermocouple.

E. Replace the cleaned media. Improper positioning can cause sooting.

F. Check that the main burner ignites completely on all openings when turned on.

G. Check the door gaskets for damage or wear and replace if necessary.

H. If the vent system is disassembled for any reason, re-install and re-seal it per the initial installation instructions.

I. Clean the safety barrier by vacuuming with a brush attachment to remove lint or dust.

J. Ensure the pressure relief system performs effectively and check its gasket for wear.

What are the flame characteristics I should look for on my NAPOLEON L38N2?

It is important to periodically perform a visual check of the pilot and burner flames. The pilot flame should be 3/8″ to 1/2″ (9.5mm – 12.7mm) and must envelop the upper 3/8″ to 1/2″ of the flame sensor. The main burner flame should have visible peaks and valleys. If any flames appear abnormal, call a service person.

Troubleshooting for NAPOLEON L38N2

Symptom Problem Test Solution
Main burner flame is a blue, lazy, transparent flame. Blockage in vent. Remove blockage. In very cold conditions, ice buildup may occur on the terminal.
Incorrect installation. Refer to “VENTING” section to ensure correct installation.
Flames are consistently too large or too small. Carboning occurs. Appliance is over-fired or under-fired. Check pressure readings as per the manual with a qualified technician.
Carbon is being deposited on glass, logs, media, or combustion chamber surfaces. Air shutter improperly adjusted. Return air shutter to specified opening, see “venturi adjustments” section in the installation manual.
Air shutter is blocked. Ensure air shutter opening is free of lint or other obstructions.
Flame is impinging on the glass, logs, media or combustion chamber. Ensure the media is positioned correctly in the appliance. Open air shutter to increase the primary air. Check input rate, manifold pressure, and orifice size. Ensure door gaskets are sealed.
White / grey film forms. Sulphur from fuel is being deposited on glass, logs, or combustion chamber surfaces. Clean the glass with a recommended gas fireplace glass cleaner. DO NOT CLEAN GLASS WHEN HOT. If not cleaned regularly, the glass may become permanently marked.
Exhaust fumes smelled in room, headaches. Appliance is spilling. Check door seal. Check for exhaust damage. Check that venting is installed correctly. Room may be in negative pressure; increase fresh air supply.
Pilot will not light. Makes noise with no spark at pilot burner. Wiring: short, loose, or damaged connections (poor flame rectification). Verify the thermocouple/sensor is clean and the wiring is undamaged. Verify connections are tight and not grounding out to any metal.
No signal from remote with no pilot ignition. Reprogram receiver code. Replace receiver.
Poor grounding. Verify the valve and pilot assembly is properly grounded.
Pilot sparks but will not light. Gas supply. Verify the incoming gas line ball valve is “open” and inlet pressure is within acceptable limits.
Out of propane gas. Fill the tank.
Pilot supply line may contain air. Repeat ignition process several times or purge the pilot supply line.
Incorrect wiring / grounding. Ensure correct polarity of wiring of thermocouple (if equipped). Verify pilot assembly/valve are properly grounded.
Burner continues to spark and pilot lights but main burner does not light. Short or loose connection in sensor rod. Verify all connections are tight and not grounding out to any metal.
Dirty, painted, or damaged pilot assembly components. Clean using a green Scotch-Brite™ pad to remove any contamination from the sensor rod, pilot hood, ignitor, or flame sensor.
Remote wall switch is in “off” position; burner comes on. Wall switch mounted upside down. Reverse.
Remote wall switch and/or wire is grounding. Replace. Check for ground (short); repair ground or replace wire.
Remote and / or receiver is not functioning properly. Remote controls lights but no spark or flame. (Remote is locked out). Reset by turning power source off then on. If back up batteries are installed, they must also be removed to re-program.
Receiver or remote has low battery. Replace batteries.
Lights or blower won’t function (if equipped). Control module switch in wrong position. Verify ON/OFF switch is in the “I” position which denotes on.
COM switch is unplugged. Verify “COM” switch is plugged into the front of the control module.
Flames are very aggressive. Door is ajar. Ensure door is secured properly.
Venting action is too great. Check to ensure venting is properly sealed or restrict vent exit with restrictor plate.
Appliance won’t perform any functions. No power to the system. Check breaker to verify it’s in the “on” position.
Receiver switch in wrong position (if equipped). Verify that the 3 position switch on the receiver is in the remote position (middle).
Transmitter isn’t operational. Check battery power and battery orientation.
Pilot will not light. No noise, no spark. (Lights and blower operate, if equipped). This applies specifically to the SIT system. Ignition box has been locked out. Choose one of the methods below to reset the system:

1. Turn off power supply and remove backup batteries. Wait, then restore power.

2. To reset using the transmitter on/off button when the LED is blinking 3 times: Turn the system off with the on/off button. After about 2 seconds, press the on/off button again. The board will reset.

3. To reset by cycling flame when the LED is blinking 3 times: In manual flame mode, use the down arrow to turn the flame off. Wait 2 seconds and press the up arrow to restart the ignition sequence.
