What must I do before operating my new HOTPOINT 1000 PLUS 9530 for the first time?

Before you use your HOTPOINT 1000 PLUS 9530, it is important to read through the user handbook to get the best out of your new machine right from the start.

You should have already followed the instructions in the INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS booklet, and your machine should be ready to work. If not, do not proceed any further until you have done so.

Please make doubly sure that you have removed the TRANSIT BRACKET. The procedure for doing this is shown on the label on the back of the machine. YOU MUST NOT OPERATE THE MACHINE WITH THE TRANSIT BRACKET IN PLACE.

How do I switch the HOTPOINT 1000 PLUS 9530 on and off?

The Programme Selector knob is also the on/off switch for the machine.

To switch ON: Pull the Programme Selector out. The mains indicator light will glow.

To switch OFF: Push the Programme Selector in.

How do I select a wash programme on the HOTPOINT 1000 PLUS 9530?

Programmes are selected by turning the Selector clockwise until the number you want is at the 12 o’clock position.

There are two things you must not do when using the Selector:

• Do not turn the Selector when it is pulled out (in the ON position). If you wish to reselect a programme, remember to push in the Selector before turning.

• Do not turn the Selector anti-clockwise. If you overshoot your intended programme, continue turning it clockwise until the number comes up again.

How should I sort and prepare laundry for washing in the HOTPOINT 1000 PLUS 9530?

Sorting:

To get the best results, different fabrics need to be washed in different ways. Laundry should be sorted according to the International Textile Care Labelling (ITCL) codes on the garment labels. It is also a good idea to separate light and dark colours.

Mixed Fabric Loads:

If you do not have sufficient items for a full load, you can combine fabrics as follows:

• ITCL codes 1 and 2: wash as code 2.

• ITCL codes 3 and 4: wash as code 4.

• ITCL codes 2 and 5: wash as code 5.

• Lightly soiled natural and synthetic fabrics (codes 1 to 6) can be mixed and washed on programme 6. The load must be restricted to 1.8kg (4lb).

Note: Non-colourfast items, woollens and heavily soiled washing should not be washed in a mixed load.

Pre-treatment:

For heavily soiled collars and cuffs, brush a little washing powder dissolved in water onto them. For stains, immediate treatment is key. Plunge the stained area into cold water or sponge it down, then wash as soon as possible.

Pockets and Zips:

Turn out all pockets to ensure they are empty of items like coins, keys, etc., which can cause damage. Close all zips and tie belts and strings to avoid tangling.

How do I load the laundry into the HOTPOINT 1000 PLUS 9530?

1. Open the door by pressing the Door Release button located in the centre of the door handle, and pulling the door open.

2. Place the sorted laundry into the drum.

3. Close the door firmly so that it clicks. This indicates that the safety latch has engaged. Do not attempt to open the door once the wash programme has started.

A rough guide to a full load of dry clothes is:

Cottons: 4.1 kg (9lb) drum full to the top, but not tightly packed.

Synthetics: 1.8kg (4lb) drum two-thirds full.

If clothes are wet, the drum should only be half full for cottons and a third full for synthetics.

Additional tips:

• Blankets, double bedspreads, and other bulky articles should be washed one at a time.

• Towels, nappies, and other highly absorbent loads should be limited to 3kg (7lb) per load to ensure adequate rinsing.

Guide to weights of clothes:

Item gm lb
Double sheet 700-1000 1½-2¼
Single sheet 450-700 1-1½
Pillow slip 100 ¼
Bath towel 450-700 1-1½

How do I add washing powder and fabric conditioner to the HOTPOINT 1000 PLUS 9530?

Washing Powder:

Type of powder: Any low suds ‘automatic’ powder can be used.

Dispenser compartments: Open the dispenser drawer. Put the powder for the main wash into the right-hand section marked ‘Main Wash’. If you are doing a pre-wash for very dirty clothes, put the powder into the left-hand front section marked ‘Pre-Wash’.

Fabric Conditioner:

Pour the fabric conditioner into the dispenser (left-hand back section) at the beginning of every wash. The machine will automatically add it to the final rinse. The correct amount to use is shown on the manufacturer’s instructions. Empty any water remaining in this compartment before refilling.

Warning: Do not pull out the powder dispenser drawer at any time when the machine is operating.

How much washing powder should I use in the HOTPOINT 1000 PLUS 9530?

It is important to use the correct amount of powder: too little will not get the clothes clean, too much will be wasteful. As a guide, the right amount of powder produces a 25 mm (1 in) layer of suds at the end of the washing cycle. An easy way of checking water hardness is to look in your kettle; if it furs up, you have hard water.

One cup = 100g (3½oz)

Load HARD WATER SOFT WATER
Pre-wash (heavy soil) Cup Main wash Cup Pre-wash (heavy soil) Cup Main wash Cup
Full load ½ 2-2½ ½ 1-1½
Half Load ½ 1½-2 ½ ¾-1
Machine Washable wool Do not pre-wash 1½-2 Do not pre-wash ¾-1

What are the optional wash features on the HOTPOINT 1000 PLUS 9530 and how do I use them?

The optional features are controlled by four buttons on the control panel. They are selected by pushing the button in and cancelled by pressing again so the button becomes flush. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO CANCEL THEM AFTER USE.

Rinse Hold: When selected, the machine stops during the final rinse, holding clothes in water to minimise creasing on synthetic fabrics (programmes 3, 4, and 6). To continue, press and release the ‘Rinse Hold’ button to complete the rinse and spin.

Half Load: Use this when you do not have a full load. It reduces the amount of water used, saving time and electricity. Do not use on Woollens Programme 7 or with large single items like double bedspreads.

Slow Spin: This reduces the spin speed from 1000rpm to 500rpm. It is useful for delicate fabrics to minimise creasing, particularly on Programmes 3 and 6.

Economy Wash: This switches off the heating element, so the machine washes with the incoming water temperature. It saves time and money but should only be used on lightly soiled loads. It can be used on any programme, including Pre-Wash.

How do I wash woollens in the HOTPOINT 1000 PLUS 9530?

Garments with washable Woolmark and Washcare labels may be washed in your machine by selecting programme 7. Four very important points must be remembered when washing woollens:

1. Restrict the load to 1.4kg (3lb).

2. Do not select the Half Load button; the water level must cover the woollens.

3. Do not use a Pre-Wash; woollens should not be soaked.

4. Do not use a Tumble Dryer to dry woollens.

Programme 7 is suitable for washable shrink-resistant, machine-washable and Superwash Woolmark garments. It features a special built-in ‘Rock-a-bye’ wash action which gives a gentle tumble motion to prevent woollens from becoming matted.

Note: Many ‘woollies’ are not made of wool but are acrylic and should be washed on programme 6. Always check the garment label.

How do I use the HOTPOINT 1000 PLUS 9530 for rinsing or spinning only?

To Rinse and Spin:

1. Switch on the power and water supply to the machine.

2. Open the door and load the items singly. Do not fill the drum more than half full.

3. Close the door firmly to engage the safety latch with a click.

4. Push in the Programme Selector and turn it clockwise until the rinse symbol (found just before the spin symbol) is at the 12 o’clock position. Select ‘Slow Spin’ if required. Pull out the Selector to start the machine.

There are separate spin sections for different fabrics: Long Fast Spin for natural fabrics (ITCL Codes 1, 2, 5 and 7) and Short Slow Spin for synthetic fabrics (ITCL Codes 3, 4 and 6).

How do I perform a Quick Wash on the HOTPOINT 1000 PLUS 9530?

To quickly freshen up lightly soiled items like underwear, blouses, and shirts, select programme 6 and press the Half Load and Economy Wash buttons. This will give a quick, cool wash in just over half an hour. Restrict the load to 0.9kg (2lb), or 1.8kg (4lb) if Half Load is not selected.

What do the various International Textile Care Labelling (ITCL) codes on my garments mean?

Washing: A tub symbol indicates washing. A hand in the tub means hand wash only. A crossed-out tub means do not wash.

Dry Cleaning: A circle symbol relates to dry cleaning. Letters inside (A, F, P) instruct the cleaner on solvent type. Garments with these symbols should not be washed in your machine unless the label says otherwise. A crossed-out circle means do not dry clean.

Bleaching: A triangle symbol indicates that bleach may be used. Letters ‘CL’ inside mean a chlorine bleach can be used (for hand washing only). A crossed-out triangle means do not bleach. Do not use bleach in your machine.

Drying: A square with a circle inside means tumble drying is beneficial. A crossed-out version means do not tumble dry. A square with vertical lines means drip dry. A square with a curved top line means hang/line dry. A square with a horizontal line means dry flat.

Ironing: An iron symbol indicates ironing is allowed. One dot means cool iron, two dots mean warm iron, and three dots mean hot iron. A crossed-out iron means do not iron.
